THE DENON DCD-SA1
FINEST SACD PLAYER IN THE WORLD 17 June 2005 Denon has long been recognised by discerning music lovers as producing some of the best audiophile components in the world. Over the years the company has continued to maintain its lead in the Digital front-end market with some benchmark CD and universal players, including the recently announced DVD-A1XV. Now after the culmination of ten years of building a reputation for developing benchmark CD players, Denon announce what is clearly a milestone in digital audio front-end development the DCD-SA1 Super Audio CD player. The DCD-SA1 is the embodiment of what represents the best of Denons advanced audio technologies in the quest for high-quality 2-channel sound reproduction. Denon are widely recognised for developing original engine drive mechanisms from CD players through to universal DVD players and have developed an advanced drive system specifically for the DCD-SA1, including the control firmware for the signal processor and the loader driver circuit mechanisms. The DCD-SA1 employs a long-life brushless motor capable of withstanding vibration caused by high-speed rotation of the SACD disc. Special attention has also been paid to the optical axis of the laser beam being irradiated by the pick-up onto the disc, mechanical unevenness in the base of the pick-up mechanism and the mechanical inclination of the brushless shaft, all designed to suppress the resonance of components caused by the disc rotation. It has been widely accepted that as improvements in digital frontend have evolved, the importance of the master clock accuracy is paramount for high sampling of the D to A converter. In the DCD-SA1s digital circuits, a highly advanced master clock monitors the accuracy of the sampling and signal processing during SACD and CD playback. Similarly, physical distance between the clock and the DAC has been shortened to minimise the adverse influences of jitter and noise. Page: 1 of 3
The DCD-SA1 also employs a fully balanced, 4-DAC output circuit employing two D to A converters for each of the stereo channels. This allows for a fully differential balanced output configuration maintaining unwanted noise to an absolute minimum. This configuration is very different from competitive balanced output designs that use operational amps to invert phase following the D/A converter. Such improvements result in high-quality sound output. The DCD-SA1 features a triple floating power supply (utilising four types of shock absorbent materials) to suppress any adverse effects of power supply transformer vibration. Such measures also completely suppress resonances among components and prevent noise from influencing the audio signal. Much of the DCD-SA1s 22kg weight is attributed to its 4-layer construction, cast iron insulator and generous over-engineered triple power supply. Recognising that European audiophiles are particularly keen to reproduce the naturalness of live sound including transparency and precise location of sound, Denon have painstakingly sourced parts and components, some of which are hand-made, for their ability to deliver superior sound quality. For example, top-grade audiophile quality capacitors employing silk textile on the inside and interconnecting high-purity copper wire are employed in critical signal stages. The end result, unequalled sound transparency, precise sound location and thoroughly realistic ambience. The DCD-SA1 also employs the companys most advanced adaptation of its world famous AL24 processing - Denons Advanced AL24 Processing. This latest evolvement utilises up-converting sampling technology to achieve natural interpolation without losing original data. Ultimately this translates into greater optimisation in eliminating unwanted ringing that can occur on pulsive musical passages and fast transient attack sounds. In the end, the sound is as the original performer intended, with naturalness in the reproduction where spatial information such as the nuances in music, the location of the performances and the breadth, height and depth of the concert hall can be heard. Sporting coaxial and optical digital audio interface connections, the player also supports Page: 2 of 3
RCA and balanced cannon correction. The DCD-SA1 comes complete with a stylish infra-remote control. Technical Specifications Super Audio CD - Frequency Response 2Hz 50kHz (-3dB) - SNR 117dB - Dynamic range 110dB - THD 0.0005% CD - Frequency Response 2-20kHz - SNR 12dB - Dynamic range 100dB - THD 0.0015% (1kHz) The DCD-SA1 is covered by two-year nationwide parts and labour warranty and has an RRP of $12,999. DENON SA SERIES REFERENCE INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER PMA-SA1
Denons finest integrated amplifier to-date
12 July 2005
Audiophiles will well remember Denons S1 Reference Class Audio Series, introduced in the 90s as some of the finest 2-channel audio components ever produced by the company. Continuing the quest for high-quality 2-channel sound reproduction, the company now announces the PMA-SA1 integrated amplifier.
Sporting an understated 50 watts of pure sound, the PMA-SA1 is aimed at the discerning music lover seeking the finest refinement of 2-channel music from a number of sources including phono, CD, tuner and tape. This conservatively rated integrated amplifier beguiles its outstanding performance that assures its legacy as a true classic.
In the design of the critical output stage, Denon have taken the approach of fewer components result in better control and balance. Towards that end, the PMA-SA1 utilises the most advanced, specially matched UHC-MOS Mosfets in a push-pull configuration that negates the use of a much larger number of bipolar transistors.
Parts and components have been painstakingly sourced, matched and selected for their audio qualities, including vibration resistant materials and extremely low noise characteristics. As a result, the PMA-SA1 is capable of producing the most delicate musical pianissimos through to the powerful fortissimos, both extremes being reproduced with breathtaking realism.

The PMA-SA1 employs a number of circuit topologies that keep the circuits relatively simple, thereby preserving the natural integrity of the music. It also makes for extremely stable operation since UHC-MOS technology offers very low resistance, making it ideally suited for delivering powerful drive capability to low impedance loads such as speakers.
The PMA-SA1 employs inverted Balance Circuit topology that supports both balanced and unbalanced circuits. This circuit does not require separate conversion circuits in the preceding stage, but allows the signal to input directly to the power stage in a balanced configuration. From such advanced technology, the PMA-SA1 offers total silence on all inputs boasting a signal-to-noise ratio of 105dB on line inputs and 89dB on phono, making it one of the quietest amplifiers in the market, irrespective of price.
The PMA-SA1 is covered by a two-year parts and labour warranty, has an RRP of $14,999 and is available at selected Denon dealers. For further information on the PMA-SA1 and other Denon products call 400 or visit
