Introduction

In this chapter, we will provide an overview of the new dLAN technology and introduce the dLAN HS Ethernet briefly.

What exactly is dLAN?

There is now a new alternative to the well-known wired LAN and Wireless LAN network technologies currently used in home networking: dLAN (direct LAN, i.e. directly networked). dLAN is home networking using the electric wiring already installed in the building. Cost factor and transmission quality dLAN is an economical and easy-to-use networking technology. You don't need to lay cables and you can connect to the home network at every power point. The dLAN standard modulates and demodulates additional frequencies on the power lines. Modulation and demodulation is a well-known and proven method of data transmission, which has been in use in other applications for a number of years. Now it is used to set up Internet and network accesses in the home or office. Depending on the damping factor, distances of u to 200 meters can be covered. With a maximum data rate of up to 85 Mbps and symmetrical upload and download speeds, dLAN is comparable to traditional Ethernet network solutions and the current WIFI wireless standard for home applications.
Data security and radiation DESpro bit encryption is used, which guarantees secure data transfer within the network. dLAN devices from devolo meet the stringent EU industrial standards and comply with the current standards for electromagnetic radiation.
What does the dLAN HS Ethernet have to offer?
Powerful and flexible For the first time, the dLAN HS Ethernet offers a transfer rate of up to 85 Mbps over your household power supply grid. The new high-speed standard lets you transfer large files between the computers of your network without long waits. You can even send DVD-quality videos over your household grid. In conjunction with IP-TV, you can experience video on demand throughout your houseanywhere an electrical outlet is available.
You can find examples of possible networks and general information in the chapter 'All about the home network'.
Simple installation b Connect the dLAN HS Ethernet to the computer or the device with the Ethernet cable. b Connect the dLAN HS Ethernet to the power supply grid. b Install the devolo dLAN software. b That's it! Ethernet connection The dLAN HS Ethernet adapter has an Ethernet port for connecting to a device in the home network (e.g. computer, notebook, modem, router, switch etc.). The euro AC power plug connects to your household power supply grid. Status display The control lamps (LEDs) of your dLAN HS Ethernet display the connection status, and provide status regarding the function of the data transmission. The dLAN HS Ethernet features 6 status lights.

Connection and startup

This chapter covers the connectors and display elements of your dLAN HS Ethernet and explains how to connect the device.

System requirements

Your computer must meet the following requirements to operate with your dLAN HS Ethernet: b Operating systems: Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Linux, Mac OS X or any other operating system with network support b Ethernet connection
Please note that your computer or other device must feature a network adapter with an Ethernet port.
Connection and display elements
The dLAN HS Ethernet adapter has six indicator lights (LEDs) and an Ethernet port:
b ETH 100/Act: Is lit whenever an Ethernet connection exists; flashes to signal 100 Mbps data rate.
10/Act: Is lit whenever an Ethernet connection exists; flashes to signal 10 Mbps data rate. Col: Flashes at a faster rate if the network is experiencing increasing use. b dLAN Power: Is lit when the dLAN HS Ethernet is ready for operation. Act: Flashes when data are being sent or received over the power lines. Link: Is lit if connected to the dLAN network. b Ethernet connection: This is the connection point on the dLAN HS Ethernet for connecting it to a computer or another device with the network cable (included).
Make sure that all of the dLAN adapter that you want to add to your network are also connected to the power supply grid. After about 15 minutes, a dLAN adapter switches into stand-by mode unless there is an active device connected to the Ethernet interface. dLAN adapters in stand-by mode are not accessible over the power supply grid.
Connecting the dLAN HS Ethernet
In this section, we will show you how to connect the dLAN HS Ethernet to a computer. Before connecting the dLAN HS Ethernet, note its security ID and keep it ready for configuring the network. You can find the security ID on the bottom of the dLAN adapter. With the computer running connect the dLAN HS Ethernet to an Ethernet port of the computer with the network cable (included). Plug the dLAN HS Ethernet adapter into a convenient power socket. Continue with the installation of the devolo dLAN software. For more information, refer to the chapter on 'devolo dLAN software'.
No drivers are required for running the dLAN HS Ethernet.

devolo dLAN software

This chapter introduces you to the dLAN configuration wizard, Informer, EasyShare and EasyClean devolo tools. It describes how to install them and how to configure your dLAN network.
Overview of the devolo software
dLAN configuration wizard
The dLAN configuration wizard helps you to build and change your encrypted dLAN network. With its help, you can add dLAN adapters to your network. It allows you to configure all dLAN adapters on the network from a central location, such as from a single workstation. For the encryption process, you need the security IDs of the dLAN adapters (provided on the underside of unit) and a network password of your choosing, which you will assign.

The password set up initially by devolo is HomePlug. You will find the software and notes about the installation of the dLAN configuration wizard for Mac and Linux on the supplied devolo product CD.

Informer

The Informer displays information about all dLAN devices in your network, such as their MAC addresses for dLAN and current transfer speeds.
The MAC address (Media Access Control) is a serial number and unique. It is programmed into the hardware and cannot be changed. The MAC address for dLAN can be found on the underside of the dLAN adapter.

EasyShare

EasyShare is a file-sharing and chat tool for your local network. It allows you to exchange files easily between local Windows computers. The chat function allows instant communication between all network users.

EasyClean

Microsoft Internet Explorer stores files in a cache on your hard drive while you surf the Internet. With EasyClean, you can determine which of these unwanted files you would like to delete.
Installing the devolo dLAN software
Put the enclosed devolo product CD in your CD-ROM drive. From the CD setup, select 'Install dLAN software'. Windows starts the wizard. Confirm by clicking Next. Select 'Standard Installation' to install the complete devolo dLAN software package. Then, click Next.
If you would like to choose the software components to be installed yourself, select 'Custom Installation'. Then, click Next.

Configuration of the dLAN network using the dLAN configuration wizard
Please have the previously noted dLAN adapters security IDs ready. The dLAN configuration wizard requires them for configuration of the network. You will find the security ID on the bottom of the device.
Start the dLAN configuration wizard under Start Programs devolo dLAN configuration wizard. Confirm with Next. The dLAN configuration wizard starts the network analysis and searches for dLAN adapters on your network.
Make sure that all of the dLAN adapters that you want to add to your network are also connected to the power supply grid. If no active device is connected to the Ethernet port, a dLAN adapter will go into standby mode after about 15 minutes. It cannot be configured while in standby mode.

In the following dialog box select a common password for your dLAN network and confirm your input with Next.
The password set up initially by devolo is HomePlug.
The dLAN adapters connected directly to your computer is detected automatically. All other dLAN adapters have to be entered manually. Enter in
sequence the security IDs of the dLAN adapters that are to be included into a network and click Add. Click Next when you have entered all desired dLAN adapters.
Exit securing your network by clicking Finish. Your dLAN network is now secure against unauthorized access from outside.
The configuration of the dLAN network can be changed or updated at any time. To do this repeat the configuration process as described above.
Overview in the dLAN network with the Informer
Due to the Informer you always have an overview of all dLAN adapters in your dLAN network. The Informer shows the dLAN adapter connected directly to the computer as well as all dLAN adapters that are included into the same dLAN network.
The Informer displays information about all dLAN devices in your network, such as their MAC addresses for dLAN and current transfer speeds. Via Device Rename you can change the name of the selected device. Right-clicking on one of the dLAN adapters opens a context menu in which the following commands are available: b 'Rename' opens a dialog in which you can assign a new name to the device. b 'Start dLAN configuration wizard' opens a dialog in which you can add new dLAN adapters to the dLAN network and assign the network password.
Informer displays only those dLAN adapters that are connected to the power supply and added to your dLAN network. After about 15 minutes, a dLAN adapter switches into stand-by mode unless there is an active device connected to the Ethernet interface. dLAN adapters in stand-by mode are not shown in Informer.
Communication in the network using EasyShare
All users on the local network who have started EasyShare are automatically recognized by the program and listed:

Configuration

The EasyShare software provides two easy wizards, which will guide you quickly and easily through the configuration process: the first setup wizard, which starts automatically the first time the program is started, and the sharing wizard, which allows you to add shared items at any time. The individual functions of the EasyShare software are described here: Folder sharing To share data with others, a EasyShare network user has to make the data available in a shared folder. When a folder is shared, all of its files as well as the files of all its subdirectories become available to all users on the EasyShare network. Folders can be shared either by using the initial setup wizard, which opens automatically the first time the EasyShare is started, or by using the sharing wizard. You can open the sharing wizard by clicking the Add share button, or by selecting File Add share from the menu.

Introduction

dLAN is an intelligent, secure technology that lets you set up a home network easily, quickly and economically via your household electrical wiring, without the need for complex and expensive dedicated cabling. The available performance and effort required for the installation also compares favourably to traditional methodsdLAN technology now attains speeds you would expect from other LAN technologies, and installing it is a breeze!

What exactly is dLAN?

dLAN (direct Local Area Network) uses the household electrical wiring to transfer data between computers equipped with suitable adapters and other network components. As a result, any power outlet can be used as a network access point. The data is modulated prior to transfer and sent as a signal via household power lines. State-of-the-art technology ensures that the power and data net-
works do not interfere with one another. Networking via dLAN is fast and secure. The data is encrypted using a key to prevent interception by third parties.
devoloUp to speed on green IT
The topic everyone is talking about is green IT. devolo has an easy solution: the power saving mode, which comes standard with the home network adapters, sets company apart from many competitors in the IT industry. And that has been the case even before global warming and the scarcity of resources have become concerns on everyone's mind. Developers at devolo have for a long time kept a close eye on how much power dLAN adapters may consume. After all, a devolo network via electrical sockets should not only be convenient, but also require as little energy as possible particularly during times when it is not being used. That devolo can satisfy the demand for energy efficiency is evidenced by the patented power saving mode in the devices. It automatically lowers energy consumption by 30 percent when the computers in the dLAN network or connected equipment are switched off. The power saving mode in the adapters is not only a tribute to environmental protection but also a real service to the customer. Most people tend to forget to regularly press the standby button on the hardware. The patented technology in devolo adapters allows you to save energy without having to do anything. And if less energy is consumed, your electric meter will turn more slowly. In other words, every minute the adapter is in power saving mode, you will save money.

A dLAN adapter connected to a computer can only go into power saving mode if the network card of the switched-off computer is also inactive. If you are using a network card that remains active even when the computer is switched off, we recommend connecting the computer to an on/off switch using a multiple socket so that both the computer and the integrated network card are de-energised.

2.3.2 Connection

b Network connection: This is the connection point on the dLAN Highspeed Ethernet II for connecting it to a computer or another network device with the network cable (included).
Please note that all dLAN devices to be connected to your network are also connected to your household electrical wiring. A dLAN device switches to power saving mode after a short while if no active network device such as a computer is connected to the network port. In Standby mode, the dLAN device cannot be accessed via the power supply grid. As soon as the network device (e.g. computer) connected to the network interface is switched on again, your dLAN device can also be reached again via the electrical wiring.
Connecting the dLAN Highspeed Ethernet II
This section describes how to connect your dLAN Highspeed Ethernet II to a computer or to a network. Use the included network cable to connect the dLAN Highspeed Ethernet II to the network port of your running computer or other network device. Plug the dLAN Highspeed Ethernet II into a wall socket. Once you have connected at least two dLAN Highspeed Ethernet II devices as described in and , your dLAN network has been set up. To protect your dLAN network individually from unauthorised access, you should first write down the security IDs of the dLAN devices. This unique identifier of each dLAN device is located on the label on the housing. Then, continue with the configuration of your network as described in Chapter 3, 'Security in the dLAN'.

Software installation

Software for Windows

Use the installation wizard to set up the following software components for using the device with the Windows operating system: b The devolo dLAN Configuration Wizard lets you set up custom encryption for your dLAN network. b The devolo Informer finds dLAN adapters in a dLAN network and displays information on the devices found.
To install the software, insert the included CD-ROM in the CD drive of your computer. If autoplay is installed on your computer, the installation will start automatically. Otherwise, open the folder with the Windows Explorer by rightclicking on Start and selecting Explorer from the context menu. Now, select your CD-ROM drive. Double-click to start the installation wizard manually. During the installation process, you will be given the choice of installing all software components ('Standard installation') or selecting individual ones ('Custom installation').
To take full advantage of the functions of your device, we recommend installing all of the applications.
You will be asked for permission to transfer anonymous performance data related to your dLAN adapter to devolo. The data sent to devolo pertains only to the performance values of your dLAN devices. The data is anonymised and will be used exclusively for statistical purposes. By providing it, you can help us improve our products. You can find the installed software applications in the Start Programs devolo program group.

Security in the dLAN

To ensure the privacy of your dLAN network, data transfer via the household electrical wiring is encrypted using the dLAN Configuration Wizard. Using another utility program, devolo Informer, you can gain an overview of all the reachable dLAN adapters in your own network.
Encrypting the dLAN network
Using the dLAN Configuration Wizard, you can connect multiple devolo dLAN adapters to each other to create a closed and secure home network. After successfully installing the devolo software, you can launch the dLAN Configuration Wizard in the Start All Programs devolo program group. Before beginning with this step, make a note of the security IDs of all existing dLAN devices. This unique identifier of each dLAN device is located on the label on the housing. It consists of 4 x 4 letters separated by dashes (e.g. ANJRKMOR-KSHT-QRUV). Ensure that all dLAN devices are connected to the electrical wiring and computers or other network components as appropriate.

If the dLAN Configuration Wizard cannot find a dLAN device in your network even though one is plugged tightly into a power outlet, follow the instructions for bandwidth optimisation in the Annex.
Configuring your dLANs using the Configuration Wizard consists of three steps: Scan for local adapter After launching the Wizard, it initially scans for a dLAN adapter connected directly to your computer. Entering a network password If your dLAN adapter has been found that is reachable directly from your computer, you can select a network password in the next step to be valid for this and all other specified adapters in your personal home network. You can choose between your own password, a random password and the default password. To define your own password with a length of at least eight characters, enter this into the Network password (min. 8 characters) text field. Alternatively, you can have a randomly selected, highly secure password assigned using the Random password button. Pressing the Default password key resets the password of the dLAN adapter to the factory setting. Normally, the display of the password is hidden for security reasons. If you enable the
option Show characters, the current password is displayed in legible form in the text field.
The factory default password is "HomePlug". Assigning a specific password to a single adapter will exclude it from the remaining dLAN network.
Configuring additional dLAN adapters (optional) After setting up the local dLAN adapter, you can, if you want, assign the dLAN password selected in Step 2 to other dLAN devices in your network in order to form a closed dLAN network. You will need the 16-character Security IDs of the various adapters from the label on the housing. passwordEnter the code without hyphens in the 4 text boxes and confirm by clicking Define password. If a security ID is correct and the device is reachable in the dLAN, the device is added to the list of already configured adapters. When launching the dLAN Configuration Wizard again after a successful initial installationwhen integrating a new adapter into the network, for example the application will remember devices and security IDs entered in previous sessions if you have encrypted them with a personal network password or the default password. In this case, you do not need to enter the devices again.
However, if the random password was used to encrypt the network during the last installation, if you want to integrate a new adapter into the network, you must re-register all previously entered dLAN adapters using the security ID.

Once you have entered the security IDs of your dLAN adapters, your dLAN network is complete. All computers and other network devices connected to the adapters by cable should now be able to communicate with one another in the network.

devolo Informer

devolo Informer can detect all available dLAN adapters in your home network and display device information in an overview. After installing the devolo software, it can be found in the Start Programs devolo program group. When the Informer is launched, it initially scans your home network for all available dLAN devices. This may take a moment. All found adapters are listed with their names and MAC addresses in the overview window. Their firmware versions are also displayed, as are the transfer speeds of active connections between the adapters. devolo Informer generally updates the list of found dLAN devices automatically. If newly-added adapters do not appear in the window, refresh the display with F5 or via the View menu.
Use the Device menu or the context menu that opens with a right-click on the name of the displayed dLAN device to rename the adapter or launch the dLAN Configuration Wizard.
Multiple instances of devolo Informer installed in your network can be set to exchange information about found dLAN adapters under View Options. You may also specify whether information on the performance of your dLAN adapters will be transferred to devolo here. The data sent to devolo pertains only to the performance values of your dLAN devices. The data is anonymised and will be used exclusively for statistical purposes. By providing it, you can help us improve our products.
