EXCELLENCE Begins in the Classroom
More high school students have the opportunity to earn college credit thanks to a March 16th addition to an agreement between the Bullitt County Board of Education and Jefferson Community and Technical College. Board members unanimously approved the addendum to the Memorandum of Agreement passed January 20, 2009. It allows the 12 X 12 Program to accept high school juniors beginning August 2010 who meet academic requirements of the program. By beginning their college career as high school juniors, students could graduate with 24 credit hours before high school graduation. The agreement includes a program where qualified Bullitt County Public School students who receive free and reduced lunch will receive waived tuition for all Please see COLLEGE on Page 4

She is consistent. Hebron Middle Schools Brandi Tungett competed in the category of Composition and came in fourth place in District 40 middle school academic competition. In Region 11, Brandis scores landed her in fourth place. At state competition, her momentum continued and she placed 4th. Brandi made the best showing among middle and high school students in Bullitt County with a state ranking in the Top 5. I was excited because I didnt think I would finish in the Top Ten, said the 12 year-old

daughter of Stacey and Kenny Tungett. Prior to state competition, Brandi looked over material from previous Composition events. I wanted to be as fresh ass possible, she said. She and nearly 50 other academic achievers were given 90 minutes to respond to a prompt. Her focus was introducing charter schools in Kentucky. I wrote it would be bad if charter schools were not introduced and how much better the state would be if we had them, she said. Brandi completed her prompt with 10 minutes Please see STATE on Page 2

Continued from Page 1 to spare allowing her time for review (in an ironic twist, Kentuckys Race to the Top application for federal stimulus dollars was turned down in Round 1 funding mainly due to the states lack of charter schools). The dozens of students then waited for the scores to be tabulated and results announced. Brandi recalled feeling confident about her Composition but she was also practical to realize that she went head to head with the best in Kentucky. I felt I did a good job, said the seventh grade student. Only the Top Ten finishers earn prizes. Brandi said she was thrilled when her named was called for fourth place. She received a nice medal and trophy which are now on a shelf at home containing numerous other academic awards. Last year, Brandi advanced from district to regional academic competition but no farther. This year it was 4th at district, regionals and state. Next year as an eighth grader, Brandi hopes to do even better. Ill practice a lot, look over all

by JCTC President Tony Newberry. District Director of Secondary Education Dave Marshall applauded the additional agreement especially the tuition waiver for eligible students. It is very encouraging to see all of the barriers that could inhibit students from enrolling be removed, he said. We are moving forward. The 12 X 12 program has experienced a tremendous growth from an initial enrollment of 7 students thanks to enthusiastic word of mouth by Ms. Miller and alumnae who have visited all middle and high schools.
30-second video was created by students in grades 6-12. The contest was organized by Reel Action Kentucky, the Louisville Metro Police Department, Seven Counties Services and the Kentucky Agency for Substance Abuse Policy. Metro Louisville Police officers joined dignitaries such as Hall of Fame Basketball Coach Denny Crum to salute the student winners from Louisville area schools. This year 31 students from Bullitt Central, Bullitt East and North Bullitt High Schools are attending the 12 x 12 program at the Bullitt County Campus located off of Buffalo Run Road. The partnership between the Bullitt County Board of Education and the JCTC-Bullitt County Campus is about eliminating obstacles between young people and higher education. It is a privilege to work with the administration, faculty, and staff of BCPS where we share resources and work together to reduce barriers and create opportunities for our students, said JCTC-Bullitt County Campus Interim Director, Donna Miller.

Bullitt Central High School student Christina Burke receives her Keep it Real video award from Metro Louisville Police Lt. Doug Sweeney.
Bullitt County Day Treatment middle and high school students and staff spent just over two weeks participating in a community service project called shoeboxes for troops. The Day Treatment group showed their commitment to helping others, in this case troops serving overseas, by collected 1,842 items to fill 65 shoe boxes. Students (standing L-R) Kaci Bennett, Matt Hodge, Harley Clark and Michelle Tidwell and (kneeling L-R) Logan Cunningham, Cody Settles, Dylan Johnson display a portion of the shoe boxes. Each student was asked to bring in one item or a shoe box stuffed with items. Zappos.com off Cedar Grove Road in Shepherdsville donated empty shoe boxes while Republic Bank donated the necessary postage to ship the items overseas. Principal Doug Roberts praised the collection efforts saying, Our kids and staff came through again with great enthusiasm and energy.

When Gas Has Gassed Out earned second place for Miciah Ocasio. He wanted to see which biodesiel, corn or peanut, is more economically and productively effective for the consumer. He was going to test this using a calorimeter to see which was more productive and use present data to see which was best economically. Miciah found out that diesel doesnt ignite well so he had to go off research and found that peanut oil isnt mass produced like corn oil is but it is way easier to produce due to the amount of oil per acre you get from a peanut compared to corn based oil. Marcus Armstrong took third place with A new Ice Age.For Seeds. Test cryopreservation on the germination of seeds, seeing if it is more productive than by using water. Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the seeds, and the rate of germination is recorded for both lima bean and super sweet corn seeds. The same is done for the seeds that were used with water. crowd was for one guy and half for the other, Kyle said. If Shawn Michaels powered out of an Undertaken move, half the crowd went nuts. When the Undertaker came back from Sweet Chin Music (kick in the face by Michaels), the other half of the crowd roared. In the end, the Dead Man got the one-two-three count preserving his unbeaten Wrestlemania streak. My Mom was sad because Shawn Michaels is her favorite wrestler and she didnt want him to lose, Kyle said. Do not surprised to see Shawn Michaels back in the WWE after some much deserved time off. His absence will allow younger talent to opportunity to make their mark in the business. Kyle hopes to return to Wrestlemania as a North Bullitt High School student. Im going to see if (librarian) Mary Parker will sign the school up so students can compete, Kyle said.

As a teacher candidate at the University of the Cumberlands, I was assigned to do an observation of a Social Studies class. Mr. Gary Belk, teacher/coach, at Mt. Washington Elementary School was able to captivate and mesmerize over 100 fifth graders through re-enactment time honored storytelling. As I walked into the gymnasium, I heard the sound of period music from the Civil War era. Mr. Belk was fully dressed in an authentic Confederate uniform. On the stage behind him lay genuine Civil War artifacts including: 13-star American and Confederate flags, musket, rifle, bayonet, canteen, a cartridge box and more. Representing the economy of the time, there were cotton balls, spun wool, and hand-made rope. Mr.

Belk had created a mini-history museum within a few square yards of his student audience. The fourth graders were immediately engaged and sat intently waiting for Mr. Belk to begin speaking. He asked higher-order-thinking questions to help students access prior knowledge from lesson units. Who can name and explain a cause of the civil war? What were living conditions like for various cultures in the south? Why did brother fight against brother? Students hands were soaring and waving to provide answers. As he sat down in a rocking chair, indicative of southern culture of the era, Mr. Belk, assumed the identity of Confederate Soldier (and ancestor), Fount Carter. Speaking in first person, I was born about 1842 in Barren County, Kentucky. My parents were from

presentation in Native American storytelling and music and dance. Redfeather brought a hands-on artifact museum for the students to explore and they thoroughly enjoyed his appearance. With Dr. Martin Luther Kings birthday in January, and Black History Month in February, it was decided that the theme for early release day would be the Civil War. Gary Vidito, an actor and musician from the cast of The Stephen Foster Story in Bardstown, presented his program entitled A Nation Once More, a presentation of songs and stories from the civil war era. Health and fitness teacher Gary Belk also gave a civil war presentation. In March and April, students learned about the musical instruments they hear in Bluegrass and Country music, folk dances from Kentucky and the Appalachian Mountains, and the folk art of Kentucky. In addition to arts enrichment for early release days, MWES teachers has changed the names of special areas/related arts classes to better reflect what they represent. Students have learned that music, visual art, dance, and drama all are forms of art. Therefore, music class is now known as performing arts because they perform music and dance, as well as dramatic presentations. Since music, dance, and drama are forms of art, art class is known as visual art. Physical education is health and fitness class, and library is library/media center. Adults must not take for granted that when children hear art, it means the arts. (more than what you can just see with your eyes). MWES students know that when adults talk about the arts, they will be able to join in the conversation, too.
