Venetian Palazzi and Case: A Guide to the Literature

Gerald J. Oppenheimer

Gerald J. Oppenheimer, 2010
Gerald J. Oppenheimer Introduction
This Guide is intended to identify all Venetian palazzi and significant case (with exceptions noted below) whether existent or demolished, to give their location, and to provide references to them in some of the important literature. Comments regarding omissions or needed corrections are welcome. Col. A Col. B Col. C Col. D Col. E Col. F Assigned identifying number Name of building Alternate name(s), used separately or in conjunction with name in Col. B Sestiere and house number (civico) if known; if not listed, an approximate location is given, preceded by These numbers are based on Calli, campielli, canali (Source for Col. L) Nearby geographic location For abbreviations of geographic terms see Note 1 References to palace numbers in FRANZOI, Umberto, SMITH, Mark, WHEELER, Daniel The Grand Canal (Vendome Press, 1994) Page references to LAURITZEN, Peter, ZIELCKE, Alexander Palaces of Venice (Viking Press, 1978) Page references to LORENZETTI, Giulio Venice and Its Lagoon (Edizione Lint, 1980) Page references to Venezia e Dintorni (Guida dItalia del Touring Club Italiano, 2nd ed., 1969) Reference in ARSLAN, Edoardo Gothic Architecture in Venice (Phaidon, 1971) Reference in Venice: Palaces in Venice, Italy (http://venice.jc-r.net/palaces/ References to prominent buildings (not house numbers), by sestiere, in Calli, campielli, canali (Helvetia Editrice, 2007, 5th ed)

Note 1: Location (Col. E) C=calle, Cp=campo, Cpl=campiello, Ct=corte, F=fondamenta, P=ponte, R=rio, Rm=ramo, Stp=sottoportego, Sz=salizada All references to saintliness have been omitted, thus Gregorio stands for S.Gregorio. Most references to S.Maria where Maria is followed by another designation have been omitted, thus S.Maria Mater Domini is referred to as MaterDomini. For reasons of conserving space, there is no break between geographic terms, thus
R.CaTron and Rm.P.Francesco [Ramo Ponte S.Francesco]. Note 2: Exclusions All religious buildings, by origin or use, such as chiese, scuole, conventi, etc. have been excluded. Giudecca and all other islands in the lagoon have been excluded. Note 3: Inclusions All secular buildings along the Grand Canal have been included, except those without individual names. Both existing and demolished houses and palaces have been included, but of the latter category not all have necessarily been marked by (ex). In addition to palazzi and case, a few other buildings, such as theaters and museums, have been included. Note 4: Maps As stated above, the primary purpose of this list is to introduce some of the basic references of the very extensive relevant literature but not necessarily to serve as a travelers guide. For the fortunate traveler in Venice, I suggest the use of a printed map whose index is organized by sestiere (a great advantage), such as, e.g., the Pianta di Citt Venezia, issued by the Studio F.M.B., Bologna. It also identifies, by number, the location of approximately 80 palaces and 40 churches. Users of the above listing have available, however, an easy online approach to finding locations by going to http://venicexplorer.net/index.php?hlangs=en or http://ombra.net. Select Venice Civic Numbers from the left column; from the drop down menu, choose the sestiere; enter the number of the building found in Col. D in this list and click Submit; click on the name of the geographic feature that will turn up. A street map of Venice will appear which either exhibits a flashing red circle at the precise location of the building, or, if the exact location cannot be identified, a small area of Venice will be shown that includes the building in question. In the latter case, the close geographic landmark in Col. E should then help in approximating the location searched for. Note 5: Illustrations All buildings referenced in Col. F (The Grand Canal), Col. G (Palaces of Venice), and Col. K (Venice: Palaces in Venice) are illustrated in these sources, and selected buildings are pictured in Col. J (Gothic Architecture in Venice).
