Inviting Images
by Art Hansen When making a scenic, or landscape picture, do you think about those who will view that image? Why do people look a little longer at some images than at others? Well there are, of course, a variety of reasons why more time is spent on some images than others, but one reason relates to image composition and the way that composition draws the viewers eye into the scene. Everyone has heard photographers talk about depth in an image when we all know that our film is flat, the prints are flat, and the projection screen is flat. How can there be depth? Well, there is no real depth, of course, but there may be an illusion of depth and this is the subject of this short article. If we are careful we can create an image with elements arranged so that a viewers mind will have the perception of some depth, even on our flat medium.

aul Grant has been involved with photography on many levels over the past ten years. He operates his own darkroom, printing many of his own black and white images and stays current on equipment through his job with Wolf Camera in East Ridge. He takes many family portraits and portraits of children in a natural environment. The subject matter that is closest to his heart is that of nature, which is befitting since nature is what got him into photography. Paul said, I got interested in photography when I saw some ducks on a creek that I couldnt identify. He knew that if he were able to photograph them, he could later identify them. He enjoys artistically and realistically photographing plants, animals, and landscapes. Paul selects his film according to the conditions - whether inside or outside, what the lighting is, and the vibrancy of the color, using Velvia for fall color and Provia when theres not much color. He shoots mostly with Nikon and Hasselblad cameras. Some of Pauls favorite images are those that he took on his 1997 trip to Alaska, which he will show at the August PSC program. He promises to tell about some places in Alaska, that we havent heard about already, and probably whet our appetites for a future visit to Alaska. Dont miss it!

PSC Member Spotlight
Meet E. Michon Wong, who has been a PSC member for approximately a year. Recently she had two slides accepted E. Michon Wong and husband, Yeu Quang Wong,Ph.d. into the Creative Arts Guilds Festival 2003. She says, I have attended the Dalton Art Show for several years out of artistic interest and perhaps buying something inexpensive from the outside vendors. She found out about the photograph competition from AVA. The submitted slides were taken at her pond of lotus, lilies, and gold fishone of a lotus bloom and the other of lotus leaves reflected in the pond. Michon has been taking pictures for about 1 years, since retiring two years ago. One day, I picked up my husbands digital camera and it was like magic! She has taken a 2-hour seminar at UTC from Tom and Pat Cory and a oneday workshop in Atlanta, primarily on Photoshop this summer. Asian art has probably influenced her photographic style the most. She uses a Sony 707 digital camera and loves to work with Photoshop, and dreams of owning a digital camera body with different lens. Michon adds, I now make cards and bookmarks, in addition to framed photographs. Since experiencing pension shock, (kind of like sticker shock) I am hoping this will help supplement my income. I have become addicted to taking pictures and running to the computer to see what magic has occurred. I love it! Last year, Michon had one photo accepted in the AVA juried Tinsel show in November. Two of her photographs were displayed at Memorial Hospitals botanical show and two are currently on display in the water theme show at Memorial. She wants to produce work that attains ever-higher artistic goals and work that reflects a joy and reverence in life. When asked about her favorite photograph, Michon states, My favorite photograph thus far is one showing a fallen lotus reflected in the pond water. It is my favorite because I was so upset that the lotus had fallen into the water and ruined my shot until I realized the greater beauty of this scene. As a photographic subject, Michon enjoys the ever-changing features of the lotus pond and its denizens, both flying and swimming. Her dream photographic destination is China, where there is a world of natural and manmade things to explore and capture through photography.
From the President
As the summer draws toward an end (Yes, school would have started by the time you are reading this), it is time to think about election of new officers. We will hold elections at the picnic in September, and the board has already begun the process of seeking out new officers for next year. We will need to elect a secretary, a treasurer, a presidentelect, and three directors. An important committee chair to be filled is chair of the Camera Show and Swap Meet. Be thinking about what positions you would be interested in, and let me know if you would like to fill any of these positions. In the meantime, board members may be calling you and asking if you would serve be ready for us! It takes a lot of ideas to keep the programs and activities of the club varied, and we appreciate all the hard work and the ideas that each of our members provide. It is the collective thoughts of all the members that are woven together to produce the excellent opportunities that we are able to provide. The first meeting that our new officers and directors will be hosting will be the October Open House. Your current board is already making plans for this important meeting. We have decided that since the purpose of the Open House is to introduce potential new members to the club, that we will be asking two or three of our current members to lead the program. Jess or I will be calling a few of you for that. We will also host a print exhibit that night for our members to display work, and members will provide refreshments. We will also have lots of door prizes. We need to work on innovative ways of advertising this event please let us know if you have any ideas! David Grant, PSC President

Board members are requested to give notice to President David Grant when known in advance that you cannot attend a Board Meeting.

PHOTO EXPERIENCE: I was fortunate to make my first visit to Grandfather Mountain during the Nature Photography Weekend on May 30-June 1, 2003. The weekend was filled with many photographers, cameras, tripods, and beautiful scenery and wildlife. Not to mention the amazing lectures from well-known professional photographers. There was also the thrill of competition in the air! For those of you who didnt read the summary of Nature Photography Weekend in a previous Contact Sheet, it is an amazing event held annually at Grandfather Mountain. The weekend revolves around a competitive contest in which each photographer can enter one roll of slide film. The film must be shot between registration on Friday and mid-afternoon on Saturday. All of the competition rolls are processed Saturday night and returned to contestants early Sunday morning. Everyone has one hour to select three slides to enter into four categories (Animals in Habitats, Animals in the Wild, Wildflowers, and Scenics) and two classes Kelly Bowden (Amateur and Accomplished). Finally the winners slides are shown and awards are presented. It is amazing to see the great diversity of photographs created from the same location with the same weather and light! The 2004 annual Nature Photography Weekend will be held June 4-6, and I would love to see a large representation from PSC! Editors Note: Kelly did not mention that with the rhododendron shot above, she won an Honorable Mention in the Amatuer Division of the Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend competition. In addition, her tiger shot, at left, entitled Double Take, won an Honorable Mention in the Reflections category in LUMINESCENCE IV, by the Cookeville Camera Club. She received a ribbon and $25, and her photo was on display during July at the Cookeville Art Center.

Mississippi Queen
Article and Photos by Angie Graham What do weight loss, the Internet, the Mississippi Queen and photography have in common? The opportunities that arise when they all come together can be amazing! It all started in May when an Internet buddy of mine on a weight loss support group posted her plans for vacation. It seemed she was traveling with her family from Arkansas to Chattanooga to board the Mississippi Queen for a civil war cruise. I love meeting internet pals and immediately emailed her to see if she would be interested in meeting me while in town. We decided we would meet for breakfast and I would take them to the airport to meet the shuttle that would take them to the riverboat. (The boat normally docks at Rosss Landing, but was docked at a small park in South Pittsburgh due to Riverbend) We had a wonderful breakfast visit then loaded up the car and headed to the airport. When we arrived, Keith Tinnin, Executive Director, Vessel Operations was there to check them in. After chatting with him for a few minutes, Linda June told him our story and that I was a photographer. He immediately whipped out a business card and said that if I would present it when boarding, I could have complete access to the boat until they depart at 10:30 pm!! WooHoo! Linda June and her family went via shuttle and I went home to pick up batteries for the digital camera and extra film. (Always keep your bag packed!!!) I arrived at the boat about 1 pm. When I approached to board, a staff member asked if he could help me. I told him I had a pass, and showed him the card Keith had given me. He grinned and said if Keith says you have access, Im not messing with you!! He then directed me to the pursers office to find my friends. (I already had the room numbers though) Linda June was at the desk getting checked in when I arrived. We had lunch in the Grand Saloon and then it was off to explore the ship. We made a stop immediately at the gift shop so I wouldnt forget my souvenirs and then we went deck by deck. The Mississippi Queen is incredible. Almost the size of a football field it has a movie theater, beauty shop, workout room, various restaurants, gift shop and lots of entertainment going on all the time. The staff was incredible. They also let us know that Richard Dreyfuss was on board for this cruise! He stayed in his cabin while I was on board, but went on some of the group tours Linda June took. The Delta Queen and Mississippi Queen are making Chattanooga a regular stop this year. They will be here on the following dates for departures: Mississippi QueenAugust 22, 2003 and November 2, 2003 and Delta QueenSeptember 20, 2003 and October 4, 2003. You can check the arrival/departure times on the website, view the layout of the ship on their website, and check their schedules and fares. www.deltaqueen.com. I hope you can get out and at least see these incredible vessels when they are here! Many thanks to Linda June and Keith Tinnin for allowing me to board!

Hansen on Images, continued from page 1.
When we create this illusion of depth, the viewer is invited to move into an image, at least visually, and stay a little longer. This, in turn, gives that viewer a bit more time to absorb the feelings the image was intended to convey. That might be those feelings associated with natural beauty, or feelings of nostalgia, or, who knows, maybe something else. There are a variety of compositional elements that can contribute to a perception of depth. The image accompanying this article uses a lead in in the form of a gently curving path or trail through some colorful trees to encourage the viewers eye to move from the front of the image into the depths of it. Most people will give such an image more than a passing glance. Try it. In April, PSC will conduct a workshop where this, and other compositional issues will be discussed at some length. Be sure to sign up for it.
