Washing hints
Sorting the laundry Follow the wash code symbols on each garment label and the manufacturers washing instructions. Sort the laundry as follows: whites, coloureds, synthetics, delicates, woollens. Temperatures for normally soiled white cottons and linen (e.g. tea 95 cloths, towels, tablecloths, sheets.) for normally soiled, colour fast garments (e.g. shirts, night dresses, pyjamas.) in 60 linen, cotton or synthetic fibres and for lightly soiled white cotton (e.g. underwear). for delicate items (e.g. net curtains), mixed laundry 30-40 including synthetic fibres and (cold) woollens bearing the label pure new wool, machine washable, non-shrink. Before loading the laundry Never wash whites and coloureds together. Whites may lose their whiteness in the wash. New coloured items may run in the first wash; they should therefore be washed separately the first time. Make sure that no metal objects are left in the laundry (e.g. hair clips, safety pins, pins). Button up pillowcases, close zip fasteners, hooks and poppers. Tie any belts or long tapes. Remove persistent stains before washing.
Rub particularly soiled areas with a special detergent or detergent paste. Treat curtains with special care. Remove hooks or tie them up in a bag or net. Maximum loads Recommended loads are indicated in the programme charts. General rules: Cotton, linen: drum full but not too tightly packed; Synthetics: drum no more than half full; Delicate fabrics and woollens: drum no more than one third full. Washing a maximum load makes the most efficient use of water and energy. For heavily soiled laundry, reduce the load size. Laundry weights The following weights are indicative: bathrobe 1200 g napkin 100 g quilt cover 700 g sheet 500 g pillow case 200 g tablecloth 250 g towelling towel 200 g tea cloth 100 g night dress 200 g ladies briefs 100 g mans work shirt 600 g mans shirt 200 g mans pyjamas 500 g blouse 100 g mens underpants 100 g Removing stains Stubborn stains may not be removed by just water and detergent. It is therefore advisable to treat them prior to washing. Blood: treat fresh stains with cold water. For dried stains, soak overnight in water with a special detergent then rub in the soap and water.
washing hints electrolux 19
Follow the product manufacturers recommendations on quantities to use and do not exceed the MAX mark in the detergent dispenser drawer. Quantity of detergent to be used The type and quantity of detergent will depend on the type of fabric, load size, degree of soiling and hardness of the water used. Water hardness is classified in so-called degrees of hardness. Information on hardness of the water in your area can be obtained from the relevant water supply company, or from your local authority. Follow the product manufacturers instructions on quantities to use. Use less detergent if: you are washing a small load, the laundry is lightly soiled, large amounts of foam form during washing. Delicate washing programme suitable for silk and mixed synthetics items. Washing temperature is 30C. The maximum spin speed is automatically reduced to 700 rpm. This programme can be selected for slightly or normally soiled cotton and synthetic items. The temperature will decrease and the washing time will be extended. This allows to obtain a good washing efficiency by saving energy. With this programme it is possible to rinse and spin cotton garments which have been washed by hand. The machine performs 3 rinses, followed by a final spin at maximum speed. The spin speed can be reduced by depressing button. For emptying out the water of the last rinse in programmes with the Rinse Hold and Night Cycle option or at the end of Soak programme. Turn first the programme selector dial to O, then select programme Drain and depress the Start/Pause button. Separate spin for hand washed garments and after programmes with Rinse Hold and Night Cycle option. Before selecting this programme the selector dial must be turned to O. You can choose the speed by means of the relevant button to adapt it to the fabrics to be spun. Separate short spin at 700 rpm for hand washed garments. It has to be used for synthetic, delicate, wool/handwashed, silk items.
Remove any objects from the pump impeller by rotating it.
Put the cap back on the emergency emptying hose and place the latter back in its seat.
Place a containfer close to the pump to collect any spillage. Pull out the emergency emptying hose, place it in the container and remove its cap. When no more water comes out, unscrew the pump cover and remove it. Always keep a rag nearby to dry up spillage of water when removing the cover.
Screw the pump cover fully in. Close the pump door.
Warning! When the appliance is in use and depending on the programme selected there can be hot water in the pump.
28 electrolux care and cleaning
Never remove the pump cover during a wash cycle, always wait until the appliance has finished the cycle, and is empty. When replacing the cover, ensure it is securely retightened so as to stop leaks and young children being able to remove it. Cleaning the water inlet filter If your water is very hard or contains traces of lime deposit, the water inlet filter may become clogged. It is therefore a good idea to clean it from time to time. Turn off the water tap. Unscrew the water inlet hose. Clean the filter using a hard bristle brush. Tighten up the inlet hose.
Important! Every time you drain the water through the emergency emptying hose you must pour 2 litres of water into the main wash compartment of the detergent drawer and then run the drain programme. This will activate the ECO VALVE device avoiding that part of the detergent remains unused at next washing. Emergency emptying out If the water is not discharged, proceed as follows to empty out the machine: pull out the plug from the power socket; close the water tap; if necessary, wait until the water has cooled down; open the pump door; place a bowl on the floor and place the end of the emergency emptying hose into the bowl. Remove its cap. The water should drain by gravity into the bowl. When the bowl is full, put the cap back on the hose. Empty the bowl. Repeat the procedure until water stops flowing out; clean the pump if necessary as previously described; replace the emergency emptying hose in its seat after having plugged it; screw the pump cover again and close the door.
The dangers of freezing If the machine is exposed to temperatures below 0C, certain precautions should be taken. Turn off the water tap. Unscrew the inlet hose. Place the end of the emergency emptying hose and that of the inlet hose in a bowl placed on the floor and let water drain out. Screw the water inlet hose back on and reposition the emergency emptying hose after having put the cap on again. When you intend to start the machine up again, make sure that the room temperature is above 0C.
something not working electrolux 29
Something not working
Check the water inlet hose connection.
Change it with a new one. Put the cap back on the emergency emptying and place the latter back in its seat. Increase the detergent quantity or use another one. Use commercial products to treat the stubborn stains.
Unsatisfactory washing results:
Too little detergent or unsuitable detergent has been used. Stubborn stains have not been treated prior to washing. The correct temperature was not selected. Excessive laundry load.
Check if you have selected the correct temperature. Introduce into the drum less laundry.
something not working electrolux 31
The door will not open:
The programme is still running. The door lock has not been released. There is water in the drum.
Wait the end of washing cycle. Wait for the Door icon desappearing. Select drain or spin programme to empty out the water.
The machine vibrates or is noisy:
The transit bolts and packing have not been removed. The support feet have not been adjusted. The laundry is not evenly distributed in the drum. Maybe there is very little laundry in the drum.
Check the correct installation of the appliance.
Check the correct levelling of the appliance. Redistribute the laundry.
Load more laundry.
Spinning starts late or the machine does not spin:
The electronic unbalance detection device has cut in because the laundry is not evenly distributed in the drum. The laundry is redistributed by reverse rotation of the drum. This may happen several times before the unbalance disappears and normal spinning can resume. If, after 10 minutes, the laundry is still not evenly distributed in the drum, the machine will not spin. In this case, redistribute the load manually and select the spin programme.
Redistribute the laundry.
32 electrolux something not working
The machine makes an unusual noise
The machine is fitted with a type of motor which makes an unusual noise compared with other traditional motors. This new motor ensures a softer start and more even distribution of the laundry in the drum when spinning, as well as increased stability of the machine. Machines based on modern technology operate very economically using very little water without affecting performance.
No water is visible in the drum
If you are unable to identify or solve the problem, contact our service centre. Before telephoning, make a note of the model, serial number and purchase date of your machine: the Service Centre will require this information.

To save water, energy and to help protect the environment, we recommend that you follow these tips: Normally soiled laundry may be washed without prewashing in order to save detergent, water and time (the environment is protected too!). The machine works more economically if it is fully loaded. With adequate pre-treatment, stains and limited soiling can be removed; the laundry can then be washed at a lower temperature. Measure out detergent according to the water hardness, the degree of soiling and the quantity of laundry being washed.

Using the Appliance
This appliance is designed for domestic use only, specifically for the storage of edible foodstuffs. The appliance is designed to operate in ambient temperatures (surrounding air temperature) between 10 C and 32 C. If these temperatures are exceeded i.e. colder or warmer, the appliance will not operate correctly. Should the ambient temperatures be exceeded for long periods, the temperature in the freezer section will rise above -18 C and food spoilage may occur.
Temperature Control
The Refrigerator
The thermostat control situated inside the fridge compartment regulates the temperature of the fridge. The thermostat control is marked from 1-5, the higher the number, the colder the setting. Position 0 Position 1 Position 6 Off minimum coldness maximum coldness
Before Use
Remove all packaging and securing tapes. Wash inside the appliance with lukewarm water and bicarbonate of soda (5 ml to 0,5 litre of water). Do not use soap or detergent as the smell may linger. Dry thoroughly. Do not use detergents, abrasive powders, highly perfumed cleaning products, wax polishes or products containing alcohol.
To Start the Appliance
1. 2. 3. Allow the appliance to stand for 2 hrs after installation. Plug in the appliance and switch on at the mains supply. Turn the thermostat control to the required setting. A setting of 3 - 4 is usually suitable for normal operation (see thermostat control). Leave the appliance for approximately 2 hours for the correct temperature to be reached before placing food inside.
The temperature will be affected by: Ambient temperature How often the door is opened How much food is stored Position of the appliance In determining the correct temperature control setting, all these factors have to be considered and some experimentation may be necessary. Do not allow children to tamper with the controls or play with the product.
Below is the recommended storage positions for various food types: 1. Ready-cooked foods, fresh meat, cold cuts. 2. Milk, dairy products. 3. Fruits, vegetables, salads. 4. Cheese, butter. 5. Eggs. 6. Yoghurt, sour cream. 7. Small bottles, drinks. 8. Large bottles, drinks.
The Freezer
Freezing fresh food
The 4-star compartment ( ) is suitable for long term storage of commercially frozen food (i.e. for 3 months, unless otherwise stated by the manufacturer), and for freezing fresh food. Under normal circumstances, to freeze fresh foods it is not necessary to change the setting of the thermostat knob with respect to the normal running position. However, for a quicker freezing operation, turn the thermostat knob to the coldest setting; but remember that, in this condition, the refrigerating compartment temperature might drop below 0C. If this occurs reset thermostat knob to a warmer setting. To help you make the most of the freezing process, here are some important hints: Place the food to be frozen on the shelf. The maximum quantity of food which can be frozen in 24 hrs. is shown on the rating plate. Only freeze top quality, fresh and thoroughly cleaned, foodsuffs. Prepare the fresh food in small portions to enable it to be rapidly and completely frozen and to make it possible subsequently to thaw only the quantity required at the time. Wrap up the food in aluminium foil or polythene and make sure that the packages are airtight.
Storage Shelves
The shelves in the refrigerator compartment are adjustable to allow for the storage of large items. To re-arrange the shelves, open the door to 90.
It is advisable to show on the single food packet the freezing-in date to enable you to keep track of the storage time. Do not allow fresh, unfrozen food to touch food which is already frozen, thus avoiding a rise in temperature of the latter.
Frozen Food Storage
When first starting the freezer or if the freezer has been out of use for some time, we advise you to run your appliance for at least 2 hours before storing frozen food. Do not exceed the storage period indicated by the manufacturer. Do not open the door frequently or leave it open longer than is necessary. Important
Storage Times
The storage chart at the end of the instruction book gives information on storage times in the refrigerator compartment. The storage times quoted are intended as a guide only. Do not cover the shelves with paper or trays etc. as this will affect the air circulation within the refrigerator compartment. Do not put hot food products in the refrigerator, allow hot foods to reach room temperature naturally before placing in the refrigerator. Cover foods, or place in closed dishes before placing them in the refrigerator, this prevents any transference of food smells.
Do not put carbonated liquids in the freezer. Ice lollies, if consumed immediately after removal from the freezer can cause a low temperature skin burn. In the event of a power cut the food in the freezer will not be affected if the power cut is short and the freezer is full. Do not open the door. Should the food begin to thaw it must be consumed quickly and must not be re-frozen. (See Hints and Tips) Do not remove items from the freezer if your hands are
damp/wet, as this could cause skin abrasions or frost/freezer burns.
Lean food keeps better and longer than fatty food, salt reduces the storage time. Wrap the food in polythene or aluminium freezing bags or foil so that they adhere to the food and provide an airtight seal. Packaging which is swollen or has traces of refrozen water droplets on the pack could indicate that the product has not been kept at a suitable temperature and that it may have lost its original quality. Partially thawed food must not be refrozen, it must be consumed within 24 hours. Never exceed the storage times indicated by the manufacturer.
Thawing
Deep frozen or frozen food, prior to being used, can be thawed in the fridge or at room temperature, depending on the time available. Small food items may even be cooked from frozen, in this case cooking will take longer. Any frozen food which is allowed to thaw accidentally should either be eaten as soon as possible, or thrown away. Alternatively, if the food is uncooked and has not been completely defrosted it can be cooked and then refrozen. Defrosted cooked food must never be refrozen.
Energy Saving Advice
Do not install the appliance close to sources of heat, such as a boiler or radiator. Locate the appliance in a cool well ventilated room and make sure that the air openings of the appliance are not obstructed. Avoid unnecessary frosting in the cabinet by packing all foodstuffs into airtight packages before placing them in the freezer. Food which is to be frozen (when cool) should be placed in the fridge before being transferred to the freezer. Try to avoid keeping the door open for long periods or opening the door too frequently as warm air will enter the cabinet and cause the compressor to often switch on unnecessarily. Ensure there are no obstructions preventing the door from closing properly.
To Make Ice Cubes
1. 2. Fill the ice cube tray full with cold water, place in the freezing compartment and leave to freeze. To remove the cubes twist the tray or hold it under running water for a few seconds.
Never try to free an ice tray that is frozen to the freezer compartment by using pointed or sharp edged objects.
Hints & T ips Normal Operating Sounds
You may hear faint gurgling or bubbling sounds when the refrigerant is pumped through the coils or tubing. When the compressor is on, the refrigerant is being pumped round and you will hear a whirring sound or pulsating noise from the compressor. A thermostat controls the compressor and you will hear a faint 'click' when the thermostat cuts in and out.
In the Event of a Power Failure
If there is a power failure during the storage of frozen foods, keep the door closed. If the temperature within your freezer should rise, do not refreeze the food without checking its condition. The following guidelines should assist you: Ice Cream: Once thawed should be discarded. Fruits & Vegetables: If soft should be cooked and used up. Breads & Cakes: Can be refrozen without danger. Shellfish: Should be refrigerated and used up quickly. Cooked Dishes: i.e. casseroles should be refrigerated and used up. Large Pieces of Meat: Can be refrozen providing there are still ice crystals remaining within them. Small Joints: Should be cooked and can then be refrozen as cooked dishes. Chicken: Should also be cooked and refrozen as a fresh dish. 9
Food Storage
To obtain the best performance from your freezer: Do not store warm food or evaporating liquid. Avoid buying frozen food if you cannot store it straight away. The use of an insulated container is advisable. When you arrive home, place the frozen food in the freezer immediately. Do not push food together too much, try to allow air to circulate around each item. Do not store uncovered food. Ensure that food placed in the freezer is dated and labelled and used in date order to ensure that food is consumed at its best.
Maintenance and Cleaning
Before any maintenance or cleaning is carried out you must DISCONNECT the appliance from the electricity supply.
Freezer
The freezer compartment will become progressively covered with frost. This should be removed with the special plastic scraper provided, whenever the thickness of the frost reaches 6 mm (). During this operation it is not necessary to switch off the power supply or to remove the foodstuffs. However, when the ice becomes very thick on the inner liner, complete defrosting should be carried out and it is advisable to perform this operation when the appliance is empty. For complete defrosting (once or twice a year) proceed as follows: 1. 2. Disconnect the appliance from the mains. Remove any food from inside the freezer, wrap it in several sheets of newspaper and store in a cool, dry place. Ensure that the fridge door is not opened to protect the food in the refrigerator while defrosting the freezer. When defrosting is complete, dry the interior thoroughly. Reconnect the appliance to the mains, set the thermostat control knob to the maximum setting. Leave the appliance to run for at least two hours. Replace the previously removed food. Return the thermostat control knob to a medium setting.
Internal Cleaning
Clean the inside and accessories with warm water and bicarbonate of soda (5 ml to 0.5 litre of water). Rinse and dry thoroughly. NEVER use detergents, abrasive powders, highly perfumed cleaning products or wax polishes to clean the interior as these will damage the surface and leave a strong odour.
External Cleaning
Wash the outer cabinet with warm soapy water. Once or twice a year dust the condenser (black grille) and the compressor at the back of the appliance with a brush or vacuum cleaner, as an accumulation of dust will affect the performance of the appliance and cause excessive electricity consumption.
When the Appliance is not in Use
When the appliance is not in use for long periods, disconnect from the electricity supply, empty all foods and clean the appliance, leaving the door open to prevent unpleasant smells. 5. 6.
Defrosting
Refrigerator
The refrigerator defrosts every time the compressor stops. The water is discharged, via the pipe, into a tray located at the back of the appliance above the compressor, where it evaporates.
Important A temperature rise of the frozen food packs during defrosting may shorten their safe storage life. Never use sharp metal tools to scrape off frost from the evaporator as this could damage the appliance beyond repair.
To Change the Light Bulb
1. 2. 3. Disconnect the appliance from the electrical supply. Remove the lamp cover securing screw. Take the lamp cover off in the direction of the arrow and change the bulb. (Type of bulb: 230 V, 15 W, E 14 thread) Replace the lamp cover and fixing screw.
Spare bulbs are available from your local Service Force Centre.
Important To avoid defrost water overflowing into the fridge, periodically clean the water discharge hole in the centre of the V shaped drip collector at the back of the refrigerator compartment, behind the salad drawers. Use a piece of flexible curtain wire for this purpose.
