Bluetooth Technology

Named after King Harald Bluetooth _ Viking King in Denmark, 910-940 AD Demark 910-940 AD First developed in 1994 by Ericsson Communication Computer implementations have grown exponentially Cable connecting devices have increased in complexity and length.

Aim of Bluetooth

Optimizes the usage model of all mobile computing and communications devices, and provides:
Global usage Voice and data handling Withstand interference from other sources Low power consumption Competitively low cost of units Very small in size and Ergonomic design

Frequency Hopping

Alternate Technology 1

IEEE 802.11 a , b , g (Wifi):
Data and Voice : BT designed-for-purpose audio channel capability. Chipsets and Cost : BT cheaper to produce with only one or two chips to implement. Security: Wifi suffers from Eavesdropping and False Authentication. BT Pairing said to be safer. WLANs are essentially ordinary LAN-protocols (TCP/IP) modulated on carrier waves. Bluetooth is more complex than that.

Alternate Technology 2

Infrared (IrDA):
IrDA is not omnidirectional, BT is. IrDA must have a free line of sight IrDA is point-to-point, only 2 units at a time can communicate
RF-enabled identification:
RFID only good for 1 or 2 metres Simultaneous connection to multiple units is limited

The Microcontroller

A microcontroller is a microprocessor (CPU) + + memory + I/O devices all on one chip. Microprocessors are programmable just like a computer Communicate with or control other devices such as computers using common protocols Cheap, Powerful and accessible IDEs WARP 13 is a device designed to program PIC family of microcontrollers Provides high level of utility functions, programming speed, reliability and ease of use.

Introduction to Thesis

Using BT Technology to monitor and track multiple personnel or objects
First test system launched in October 2003 in The Aalborg Zoo Denmark
Building on David Chews Thesis - BT and GPS in Automotive Applications
Monitor vehicle parameters using BT devices Data collected by GPS receiver and displayed on handheld via a microcontroller

Aim and Objectives

Investigate in further detail BT Wireless capability Build on and further develop David Chews project to monitor multiple moving objects Develop BT Module for monitoring Incorporate a BT Access Point instead of GPS receiver
Additional if Time Permits
Add notification function to BT module Increase range of BT Module by modifying antenna

Deliverables

Prototype to be develop consisting:
Several BT Modules for tracking in the range of 10-15 metres. Interfacing with BT Access point via Microcontroller Low level programming of BT modules.
Thesis Project Report containing:
Bluetooth history and current development In-depth report of BT project undertaken Management report

BT Module

2.4GHz BT Radio

BT Link Controller

BT Link Manager & I/O

Possible Implementation

Densely populated office environment
Improve flow of work Monitor personal access permission

Airport

Track people that may be lost at airport Child safety

Theme Parks and Zoo

Parents assurance Child safety

Thesis Work Scope

Risk Factors & Project Team
Risk involved in this Thesis Project:
Overspending budget Not finishing on time Equipment limitation due to budget Technology still in development
Thesis Project team members are:
Project Director: Professor Chris Rizos Project Manager/Developer: Vu Nguyen Le Technical Specialist, Lab Assistant and Post Grad. From SNAP group.
Budget and Project Management
Estimated Project Budget is $5000
Development Tools, Modules and BT devices Supervisor Consultation time Assistance from Post Grad student and others Own time and Lab Facility Includes summer break starting February Project Progress Report Financial Report Risk Discussion Quality Assurance
Team meetings conducted every 3 weeks

Conclusion

Using current BT Technology to develop Modules to be monitored and tracked
Hardware : BT Modules Software: Low level commands for Modules and Microcontroller programming Work on David Chews development to further improve BT Capability
