Plenty challenging, but... but...the interface needs serious work in the user-friendly department. I would much rather study chess.

nut gold-plated binding posts. Although theyre on the small side, they werent too small to accommodate my reference cables banana plugs. Energy provides threaded (0.25-inch) and keyhole mountsand of course, wallmounting is always a viable option with speakers of this size. Energy uses the term Convergent Source Module to describe the driver array. The idea is to keep the drivers close together by mounting them in the same faceplate. Energy says this results in improved dispersion and better integration at the crossover. Both drivers have changed. The new 0.75-inch aluminum-dome tweeter replaces a previous 1-inch version, which had a polycarbonate layer. Use of pure aluminum is said to improve dispersion and transient response. And the former 3.5-inch laminated-aluminum midwoofer has given way to a 3-inch poly-titanium cone. Energy claims this offers better dispersion at the top of its range, and as part of the Convergent Source Module, it aligns better with the tweeter. The Take Classic satellite is a two-way design with two drivers. So, surprisingly enough, is the Take Classic center. It eschews the woofer-tweeter-woofer array so common in center speakers in favor of a single woofer and tweeter. The only differences between the satellite and center are that the latters enclosure is a little longer, presumably for horizontal placement, and it has two front ports instead of a single back port. People, the absence of a second woofer is front-page news. It means

Heres one more reason to love compact sat/sub setsbesides the fact that theyre affordable, easy to run with any receiver, and capable of anchoring a goodsounding surround system. They make your room look bigger. Somehow, after years of reviewing these things, I had failed to notice this, at least consciously. But when Energys Take Classic displaced my chunky reference monitors, I was amazed at how much more spacious my listening room had become. It was as though the room had gained a foot or two in length and width. My flat-panel TV looked bigger, too. The Take Classic is the latest generation of a long-running and best-
selling train of thought. Energys original Take 5 first surfaced in 1997 and was updated as the Take 5.2 in 2002. The new version sports several significant changes. Although the price is still $599, the Take Classicunlike the Take 5.2is a full 5.1-channel set including a subwoofer.

Pretty in Black

Like its predecessors, the Take Classic comes in a black mediumdensity fiberboard enclosure that distinguishes it from many plasticenclosed competitors in the same price range. Finish is a high-gloss black. The port has been moved from the front to the back, and the grille now has a sporty curve that juts above the top surface. On the back is a pair of metal-

running speaker cable from two amp channels through the sub to a pair of speakers, you probably should be looking for a sub with a set of highquality binding posts. As I was setting up the sub with test tones, I found it necessary to use about 66 percent of its volume control, which is more than Im used to, indicating less gain than usual. I also had to increase the sub-out level in the setup menu of my trusty old Rotel RSX-1065 A/V receiver. The signal source for this review was an Integra DPS-10.5 universal player.

that this center is more graceful in handling a problem that plagues the vast majority of other dedicated center speakers to some degree. The problem is lobing. While this phenomenon affects all speakers with physically separate drive units, it occurs profoundly in the dispersion patterns of speakers utilizing dual midwoofers operating over the same frequency range. When listened to off axis, they sum and cancel each other differently at various angles. In the case of most horizontal center speakers, the listener in the center seat may enjoy f lat frequency response, but the listeners off to the sides wont. The Take Classic designers deserve credit for doing the right thing where so many others bow to bad habits and marketing inertia. Room efficiency is specified at 89 decibels. Note the difference between sensitivity and room efficiency. The latter includes the effect of room reflections and is typically a few decibels higher. Although Ive seen higher efficiency ratings in speakers this size, an average receiver should still run the Take Classic with ease, especially in the kind of small to medium-sized room where sat/ sub sets are most appropriate. The Take Classic subwoofer is similar to Energys ESW-8 but with a high-gloss finish to match the other Takes. It has an 8-inch downwardfiring polypropylene-cone driver. With no grille, the front-firing 2-inch port is clearly visible. Energys patented Ribbed Elliptical Surround is an attempt to improve movement of the driver, allowing greater output. Its backed with a relatively modest 200-watt Class AB amp. Controls include knobs for volume and crossover frequency, toggle switches for phase and power, a pair of line-level inputs (no line outs), and a full set of speaker-level ins and outs. The latter are spring-loaded wire clips, not binding posts. That shouldnt concern you if youre using the sub in a surround system, since youll be running your receivers subout to the subs line-in. But if youre

loudspeakers were measured with grilles at a distance of 1 meter with a 2.83-volt input and scaled for display purposes. The satellites listening-window response (a five-point average of axial and +/15-degree horizontal and vertical responses) measures +2.66/4.64 decibels from 200 hertz to 10 kilohertz. The 3-dB point is at 111 Hz, and the 6-dB point is at 91 Hz. Impedance reaches a minimum of 4.55 ohms at 351 Hz and a phase angle of 51.78 degrees at 179 Hz. The centers listening-window response measures +1.52/5.71 dB from 200 Hz to 10 kHz. An average of axial and +/15-degree horizontal responses measures +0.87/6.19 dB from 200 Hz to 10 kHz. The 3-dB point is at 94 Hz, and the 6-dB point is at 86 Hz. Impedance reaches a minimum of 4.49 ohms at 351 Hz and a phase angle of 48.92 degrees at 162 Hz. The subwoofers close-miked response, normalized to the level at 80 Hz, indicates that the lower 3-dB point is at 30 Hz and the 6-dB point is at 28 Hz. All passive
sound intended by the filmmakers, specifically in the LFE channel. Theres only so much a modestly powered sub can accomplish. In 3:10 to Yuma, also in Dolby Digital 5.1, low-voiced dialogue was unexpectedly the star. It certainly helped that the cast of this comfortingly old-fashioned Western includes Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, both at the top of their form. There are hundreds of rifle shots and even a Gatling gun, but the most engaging moments of the movie lie in tense low-voiced exchanges between the leads, a familiar pair of black-hat/ white-hat characters. Thanks to the Take Classics effortless low-level resolution, I never had to hike the volume to catch a line.
strong performer with music as well as movie content in which music is prominent. The centers vocal prowess is considerable. And the system as a whole works well both on and off axis, so dialogue is intelligible from any seat in the room. Although its not especially forceful, the sub does produce clean pitches. The systems musical deftness came unexpectedly to the fore in the DTS 5.1 soundtrack of Joshua. This gripping horror drama dispenses with shock effects and digital gimmicks in favor of good, old-fashioned psychological suspense. Much of that suspense rests on two pieces of music. In the opening scene, a psychopathic child gives a note-perfect performance of a Beethoven piano sonata, filling the viewer with foreboding. The Take Classic contributed to its chilling perfection with a realistic piano sound, nicely dovetailed in the crossover between the sats and the sub. A later scene brings the musical bookend, this time the psychokids super-creepy performance of a Dave Matthews song. Brute force is not the Take Classics forte, so to speak. That became apparent in the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack of Sunshine, a sci-fi drama about a space-borne team preparing to jump-start the sun. Its been cooling off, so their mission is to drive a bomb into it. As is customary in such movies, aggressive effects represent the vastness of space. The speakers found some timbral nuances in the synthesized roar, which, according to the credits, includes authentic space noise from NASA and mystic breaths by the Choristers of Gloucester Cathedral. I also caught a brief reference to the orchestral raveup that concludes A Day in the Life by the Beatles. But the Take Classic system inevitably scaled down the brute-force gales of

Take Chances

Preconceptions cheat people of great listening experiences. Here are two examples: SACD is dead. And, You cant get great sound from little speakers. I wish you could have heard the Take Classic groove on The Word Is Out!, the second 5.1-channel release from the Jaco Pastorius Big Band on the Heads Up label. Pristinely recorded to-die-for brass and other textures flooded the room via tunes either written by or associated with Jaco, the late virtuoso bass player. The center channel was inconsistently filledunderuse of the center is a pet peeve of minebut the mixing engineer did throw in a little muted trumpet here, a little drum sound there. With matching driver arrays in all channels, the Energy system maintained strong timbrematching, both side to side and front to rear. If I were in retail, Id be playing this disc for my customers. R.E.M.s New Adventures in Hi-Fi was, ironically, not the DVD-Audio surround release but merely a CD. Here, the Take Classic, performing in the Dolby Pro Logic II music mode, presented the tone colors of Peter Bucks electric guitars and Michael Stipes vocals in all their glory and made the best of Stipes often elusive
enunciation. When I wandered around the room, from sofa to keyboard and back, I was surprised at how little the sound changedthe systems consistency off axis was excellent. I wanted a meatier rhythm section, though, and whacked up the subs volume knob nearly all the way. I justified my purchase of Glenn Gould: The Complete Original Jacket Collection by simple math. At $222 for 80 discs, I was paying little more than $3 per disc, and Im betting the price will skyrocket when the box goes out of print. At random, I pulled out a disc covering two Renaissance-era English composers, William Byrd and Orlando Gibbons. The Take Classics fairly objective tonal balance was a good match for the limpid plain-vanilla Steinway sound Gould favored. It came as no surprise to me that Energys Take Classic speaker package was such a fine all-around performer. The brand has a strong track record in sat/sub packages, and this set continues the tradition. No, these speakers wont give you the slamming lowfrequency effects youd get from phat towers and/or a giant sub. But they deliver the midrange goodsthe single most important aspect of speaker performance, if I had to choose oneand kept me intelligently entertained. * Audio editor Mark Fleischmann is also the author of the annually updated book Practical Home Theater (www.quietriverpress.com).
