This chapter tells you how to unpack and set up your
projector and connect it to other equipment. The projector must be connected to a computer or a video source such as a video tape deck, camcorder, digital camera or laser disk player. For example, you may want to connect the projector to both your computer and a video source, or set up the projector for one or more of the following: Connect the mouse cable to use the remote control as a wireless mouse. Provide audio for one or both image sources. The audio source can be the computer, video source, or another device such as a stereo. Connect to an external speaker or PA system to amplify the audio.
Unpacking the Projector
When you unpack the projector, make sure you have all these components: Projector Remote control 2 AA batteries Power cord Computer cable Audio cable Video/ audio cable MAC Desktop adapter MAC Monitor adapter Main cable PS/2 mouse cable Serial mouse cable MAC mouse cable PC serial cable MAC serial cable Projector Software All of the above items may not be required for your particular computer system Save all packaging materials in case you need to ship the projector in the future. It should always be transported in its original packaging or the equivalent.
Additional Items
The following items may also be required, depending upon how you plan to use the projector. S-Video cable for S-Video signal input A separate cable is required for each video source. Macintosh PowerBook output cable This cable is normally provided with PowerBook models with video output capabilities. Contact your Macintosh dealer if you need to purchase one. Special connector, cable or components for connecting the mouse cable to your computer These items should be available from your computer dealer. This chapter provides the following information about using
your projector: Turning equipment on and off Adjusting the screen image Controlling the projector Checking the status of the projector
The illustration below identifies the parts of your projector.
Turning the Equipment On and Off
Always turn on the projector and its attached equipment in the following order. 1. Video source 2. Audio source (if different than computer or video source) 3. Projector 4. External speaker or PA system 5. Computer
Turning the Projector On and Off
1. Remove the projector lens cap. 2. Press the Power button on the remote control or control panel. The green power indicator comes on. If computer or video equipment is attached, the computer or video signal is projected. Allow about 30 seconds for full illumination.
Warning: Never look into the lens when the lamp is on. This can damage your eyes. It is especially important that children are not allowed to look into the lens.
Reverse the order shown above to turn off the projector and other equipment. After you press the Power button to turn off the projector, the fan will remain on and the operation indicator will flash orange for about one minute as the projector cools.
operation indicator
The indicator stops blinking (and remains lit in orange) when the cooling operation is complete.
Note: The projector is designed so that it cannot be turned back on while the power indicator is flashing green. Before pressing the Power button again, wait until the lamp has cooled and the operation indicator is orange.
Sleep Mode
Sleep mode conserves electricity by automatically turning off the lamp after the projector has not been used for 30 minutes. In sleep mode, the projectors operation indicator is orange and only a minimum amount of the projectors circuitry remains on. This conserves electricity, cools the projector, and extends the life of the lamp. When the projector is in sleep mode, you can press the Power button to start projecting images, or you can unplug the projectors power cord.
Focusing and Positioning the Screen Image
After an image appears on the screen, check to see if it is in focus and whether it fits properly on the screen.

The projector needs little maintenance. You should keep the
lens clean because any dirt or stains will appear on the screen. You will also need to clean the air filter located at the bottom of the projector periodically. It is important to keep the air filter clean because a clogged air filter prevents proper ventilation which is necessary to cool the projector and prevent it from overheating. The only parts you should replace yourself are the lamp and the air filter. If any other parts need replacing, contact your EMP-7300/7200/5300 dealer or qualified service personnel. When cleaning any part of the projector, always switch off and unplug the projector first.
Warning: Never open any of the covers on the projector except the lamp and filter covers. Dangerous electrical voltages inside the projector can cause severe injury. Except as specifically indicated in this Owners Manual, do not attempt to service this product yourself. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel.
Cleaning the Lens
Clean the lens whenever you notice dirt or dust on the surface. Wipe the lens surface gently with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. To remove dirt or stains on the lens, moisten a soft cloth with water and a neutral detergent and gently wipe the lens surface.
Cleaning the Projector Case
To clean the projector case, first unplug the power cable. To remove dirt or dust, wipe the casing with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. To remove stubborn dirt or stains, moisten a soft cloth with water and a neutral detergent. Then wipe the casing. Do not use alcohol, benzene, thinners or other chemical detergents as these can cause the casing to warp.
Cleaning the Air Filter
The air filter, which is located at the bottom of the projector, should be cleaned after every 100 hours of use. If it is not cleaned periodically, it can become clogged with dust and prevent the projector from being ventilated properly. This can cause overheating and damage the projector. To clean the air filter: 1. Switch the projector off and unplug the power cable from the wall socket. 2. Stand the projector with the handle at the top so that the filter is easily accessible.
Caution: Stand the projector with the handle at the top to prevent dust from entering the projector.
3. Lift the stopper of the filter cover with your fingers.
4. The air filter is attached to the inside of the projector. To clean the filter you are advised to use a small vacuum cleaner designed for computers and other office equipment. If you do not have one, use a dry, lint-free cloth. If the dirt is difficult to remove or if the filter is torn, replace it. An air filter come with replacement lamps. Contact your EMP-7300/7200/5300 dealer or call an EPSON Service Centre. Be sure to request part number. (ELPLP05) 5. Replace the filter cover. 6. Plug the power cable back into the wall socket.
Replacing the Lamp
The projector lamp typically lasts for about 2000 hours of use. It is time to replace the lamp when: The projected image gets darker or starts to deteriorate. The projection lamp indicator (orange and red, flashing alternately) is red. The message LAMP REPLACE appears on the screen when the projector lamp comes on. Contact your local EPSON dealer for a replacement lamp.Use only replacement lamp part number. (ELPLP05)
Warning: Let the lamp cool before replacing it.
1. Turn off the projector and unplug the power cable. 2. Turn the projector over so you can access the lamp cover.
3. Use a screwdriver, coin, or similar object to loosen the two retaining screws on the lamp cover. When the screws are loose, lift off the lamp cover. (You cannot remove these screws.)
4. Use a screwdriver, coin, or similar object to loosen the two screws holding the lamp in position. (You cannot remove these screws.) 5. Lift up the handle and pull out the lamp.
6. Gently insert the new lamp by lowering it into position. Make sure it is inserted securely. 7. Tighten the screws you loosened in step 4. 8. Replace the lamp cover and tighten the cover screws. (Make sure the lamp cover is securely fastened. The projector turns itself off if the lamp cover is open.)
This chapter describes the problems indicated by the status
lights and provides information on what to do if you experience problems with the projector. It is divided into the following sections: General problems with the projector. Refer to this section if the projector is not working and to find out what the warning lights are indicating. Problems with the screen image. Refer to this section if you cannot project an image or if the quality of the screen image is poor. If you have a problem, refer to the appropriate section and follow all the suggestions which apply to your problem. If none of the suggested solutions solves the problem, call your EMP-7300/7200/5300 dealer or call the EPSON Service Centre.
Problems with the Projector
If you have problems with the projector, first turn it off and unplug it. Then plug the power cord back in and turn on the projector. If this does not solve the problem, check the warning lights at the top of the projector. These lights alert you to problems with projector operation.
See the following pages for information on what to do when you see these warning lights or encounter other specific problems with the projector. u The operation indicator is flashing orange and you cannot turn on the projector. The lamp is cooling down. Wait until the light turns off and then turn on the projector. u The operation indicator does not come on. Turn off the projector, check that the power cable is connected securely both at the power outlet and the projector, and press the Power button again. u Projected images get darker or start to deteriorate, or the lamp indicator is red. Replace the projector lamp as described on page 78.
u The temperature indicator is red. The projector is overheating, which turns the lamp off automatically. Let the projector cool for a few minutes, then turn it back on. Make sure nothing is blocking the ventilation vents. The air filter may be clogged. Clean it as described in Chapter 5 and then let the projector cool for a while. If the projector continues to overheat after you clean the air filter, the problem may be caused by damage to the cooling fan or internal circuits. Contact a qualified service person.
Warning: Except as specifically explained in this Users Guide, do not attempt to service this product yourself.
Problems with the Image or Sound
u An image does not appear on the screen. Check that the power light is on and the lens cover is off. Also make sure the cables are installed correctly, as described in Chapter 1. The correct image source may not be selected. Press the Source button on the remote control or the control panel to choose another image source. u Only part of the computer image is displayed. If the computers output resolution setting is higher than 1024 x 768, the projector resizes the image. If the computer output is not compatible with this resizing, choose a different display setting on the computer. In Windows 3.x, use Windows Setup in the Main program group. For a Macintosh, choose Control Panels under the Apple menu and then choose Monitors. In the Monitors screen, choose Options and make sure Macintosh Hi-Res Display or another 1024 x 768 display is selected. For supported display settings, see page Supported Monitor Displays on page 89, 90. You also may need to modify existing presentation files if you created them for a different resolution. See your software manual for specific information. u The message NO SIGNAL is displayed. An image source not connected to the projector is selected, the signal is not being output from the computer, or the signal is not reaching the projector. Make sure the connectors are securely attached to both the projector and the image source. Then check that the image source is selected correctly. When NO SIGNAL is displayed, you cannot access the source (computer/video) menu.
Serial. A type of communication interface that transmits data over a single wire. Sleep mode. The power cable is connected but the projector is switched off. In this mode the power LED lights up orange. If the projector is not used for 30 minutes the lamp switches itself off and after 30 seconds the projector goes into sleep mode.

Introduction
our compact, lightweight EPSON EMP-710/700/500 projector lets you project full-color images and video onto a large screen for presentations. You can connect it simultaneously to two image sources: one PC or Apple Macintosh computer image source, plus one video source such as a video tape deck, camcorder, or digital camera. You can also connect audio for each image source. Images are displayed in full color (16,670,000 colors) at a XGA resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels (EMP-710/700) or SVGA resolution of 800 x 600 pixels (EMP-500). Your projector produces bright images that can be easily seen in rooms light enough to take notes. A totally new AVTSS (Automatic Video Tracking and Synchronization Sensing, patent pending) provides automatic set-up of image from a computer. You control your projector through a hand-held remote control unit, with menus being provided for image source switching and image adjustment. The remote control can also act as a wireless mouse to control mouse operations on your computer screen during presentations.
Your projector features the newest resizing technology DAR (Digital Active Resizing) which supports VGA~UXGA (EMP710/700) and VGA~SXGA (EMP-500) computer output. No matter what type of computer output is used, the result is a full-size video image of outstanding clarity. The video source can be NTSC, PAL or SECAM in composite video or S-Video format. See Chapter 6 for details on supported computers and video formats.

Installation
This chapter describes how to unpack and set up your
projector, and connect it to other equipment. The projector must be connected to a computer or a video source such as a video tape deck, camcorder, digital camera or laser disc player before it can project any images. You may also want to set up the projector for one or more of the following: Connect the mouse cable to use the remote control as a wireless mouse. Provide audio for one or both image sources. The audio source can be the computer, video source, or another device such as a stereo. Connect to an external speaker or PA system to amplify the audio.
Unpacking the Projector
When you unpack the projector, make sure you have all these components: Projector Remote control 2 AA batteries Power cord Computer cable Audio/Video cable (A/V cable) PS/2 mouse cable USB mouse cable Mac mouse cable (ADB mouse cable) Owners manual Softcase Depending on the configuration of your equipment, you may not need all these components. Save all packaging materials in case you need to ship the projector in the future. It should be transported in its original packaging or the equivalent.
Additional Components
Depending on how you plan to use the projector, you may need these additional components: To receive an S-Video signal, you need an S-Video cable. (One is usually provided with your video device.) A separate cable is required for each video source. To connect the projector to a Macintosh PowerBook, you need a video-out cable. (One is provided by/or can be purchased from Apple for all new PowerBooks that have video-out capability.) If your PowerBook does not include one, see your Macintosh dealer. To connect the mouse cable to your computer, you may require a special connector, cable, or other components. You can obtain these items from your computer dealer. If your computer doesnt have a mouse connector, you cannot use the mouse cable.
Note: You can connect a Kensington MicroSaver anti-theft device in the hole on the projectors right side. Contact your computer dealer.
Setting Up the Projector
1. Place the projector on a sturdy, level surface within five feet of the computer or video source.
Caution: Do not hold the projector by the lens. This can damage the lens.
2. Place the projector at a correct distance from the screen. The distance between the projector and the screen determines the actual image size. Use the general guidelines below to determine the correct distance.
Screen size Horizontal distance from projector to screen 300 inches (610x460cm) 450.7 inches (11.5m) ~ 546.3 inches (13.8m) 200 inches (410x300cm) 299.5 inches (7.7m) ~ 363.3 inches (9.2m) 150 inches (305x228cm) 223.9 inches (5.7m) ~ 271.7 inches (6.9m) 100 inches (200x150cm) 148.3 inches (3.8m) ~ 180.2 inches (4.5m) 80 inches (160x120cm) 118.1 inches (3.0m) ~ 143.6 inches (3.6m) 60 inches (120x90cm) 87.8 inches (2.3m) ~ 107.0 inches (2.7m) 40 inches (81x61cm) 57.6 inches (1.5m) ~ 70.4 inches (1.7m) 30 inches (61x46cm) 42.5 inches (1.1m) ~ 52.1 inches (1.3m) 26 inches (53x40cm) ~ 44.7 inches (1.1m)
3. Turn the projector so that the lens is at right angles to the screen. If the projector is not angled correctly, the screen image will be crooked. 4. Connect one end of the power cable to the projectors power connector. Connect the other end to an earthed electrical socket. The projector should be in sleep mode, indicated by an orange power indicator.
