System requirements

1. Functions and features
This photograph is a copy of the measurement image. There is a part different from an actual measurement situation. PC in this photograph is not provided in Rice Freshness Tester model RN-820 package.

Evaluation Mechanism

A polished rice is coloed by the special reagent. The Rice Freshness Tester model RN-820 evaluate the freshness of it with scanning every single grain. This tester's evaluation method is an application of a pH indicator, so the results may not match completely with other methods.

There is no ranking based on the Japan Grain Inspection Association freshness standard for glutinous rice, rince-free rice or long-grain. However, these evaluation measurement are possible, so the tester can be handled as a quality management tool.

4. Setup

Do not connect the scanner with PC until you have installed Freshness Meister and scanner drivers. Please operate the installation software with log on manager's group account. (Recommend; administrator's group account) If the dialog Install program as other user or user account control (Vista) is displayed while install operation, the installation cannot be completed even if the information is input. First of all, log off from PC, and try to reinstall after log on by the manager's account.
4-1. Install the Freshness Meister
1.Startup Windows. 2.Insert the Freshness Meister CD-ROM in the CD drive.
It is necessary to end all other applications.
3.Displaying Install menu.
If Install Menu is not displayed, open the CD drive within My Computer, and double click [ASlauncher. exe] in [Asutorun] folder.
4.Click [Freshness Meister Install] on Install Menu. 5.From here, proceed by following the Freshness Meister Setup on the screen. 6.When the installation is complete, a short cut ( ) will appear on your desktop. 7.Continue to 4-2. Install the EPSON scanner driver.
4-2. Install the EPSON scanner driver
1.When continuing from 4-1, click the following button according to the OS and the language that you are using.
Windows 2000 or XP -->[English (2000/XP)], [Korean (2000/XP)], [Taiwanese (2000/XP)] or [Chinese (2000/XP)] Windows Vista --> [English (Vista)], [Korean (Vista)], [Taiwanese (Vista)] or [Chinese (Vista)] If Install Menu is not displayed, open the CD drive within My Computer, and double click [ASlauncher. exe] in [Asutorun] folder.

2.From here, proceed by following the EPSON TWAIN 5 Setup on the screen.
When the program requests you to reboot the computer, please follow the instructions.

5. Connecting the scanner
The tester takes images by placing a petri dish containing indicator on the scanner. Ensure that the scanner is installed on a horizontal location.
5-1. Unlock the Transportation lock
Slide the Transportation lock on the back of the scanner, and move the lock to the Lock release position. (Fig.1)

5-2. Connect the power cable
1.Connect the power cable and the AC adapter. Plug the cord from the AC adapter into the scanner power socket. 2.Plug the power cable into a power outlet.
There is noise from the scanner in connecting the AC adaptor without releasing the transportation lock. Remove the AC adapter immediately, please Caution connect it again after release the transportation lock.

5-4. Connection to PC

C onnect t he scanner to the PC u s i n g t h e USB cable provided. Found new hardware dialog is displayed, and installation will begin automatically.
When connecting to the PC, please connect directly to a USB port on the PC. The scanner may not be correctly recognized, or may not operate if Note connected into a USB hub.
6. How to operate the tester

6-1. Startup and Exit

(1) Start up Freshness Meister
1.Double click the shortcut ( to startup "Freshness Meister".

(2) End of Freshness Meister
To end software, Please, Click [] on the right of the window.
You can also end the program by clicking [Menu bar] --> [Action] --> [Close].
6-2. Measurement preparations
In order to make more precise measurement, please condition the scanner up sufficiently before use. Note Recommended ambient temperature for this scanner is 15 to 30 C.

(1)Setting the Scanner BIAS (Important: Only at initial startup of the Freshness Meister)
1.The freshness master is started, and open setting window for selection [Menu bar]--> [detailed setting] is chosen from the menubar additionally, So the Setting screen is opened. 2.Please input the bias value on the sticker on the back of the scanner into the Scanner BIAS.
Scanner BIAS is adjusted modification coefficients of each scanner. When you install the software, and run Freshness Meister for the first time, you will need to input the Scanner BIAS. Once the bias value has been input once, it does not need to be set again. Here, 0.13 is input as an example where 0.13 is written on the sticker on the back of the scanner. Please select the measurement rice type. BIAS : X.XX
3.Click the [Close] button to close the Setting dialog. With this, scanner preparations are complete. 11
(2) Freshness Meister color correction
In order to make a correct measurement, please perform color correction daily before use.
1.Open the scanner cover and remove the shield plate or the template on the glass surface of the scanner. 2 Clean the glass surface of the scanner with the lens cleaner. 3.Place the template on the glass surface of the scanner. The face of the template is indicated on the template. 4.The template has two square holes (large and small). Place the two types of color test plates on the scanner aligned with the hole positions. Arrange the color test plates such that the surface on which the stickers are stuck is facing up, and such that the stickers are at the back (orientated such that one can read the numbers on the stickers). 5.Click [Etc] on menu bar, and select [Color Correction]. 6.The Color correction dialog will appear, and input the number on the case of the color test plate into Input value. (This is done only once at first time only.)
The number on the case of the color test plate is different in each color test plates. When exchanged the color test plate are used for the first time, input the number on the case into Input value.
7.Close the scanner cover, and then click the [Measure] button.
Freshness Meister displays the processing correction status every minutes, while the correction is operating. Please keep the closing the scanner cover while the correction is operating.
8.The correction should finish in about 5 minutes. Click the [Close] button to close the Color correction dialog.
To prevent the color test plates from becoming discolored or faded, return them quickly to their case, and store in a dark place.
6-3. Measurement operation
Please start the FreshnessMeister before it proceeds to the next step. Please see p11 6-1 (1) about the start method.

(1) Scanner preparation

1.Open the scanner cover.
Please correct the color when the environment changes remarkably. For exsample, environmental

temperature.

2.Place the shield plate on the glass surface of the scanner.
If the scanner glass is soiled, wipe it down using the lens cleaner. An accurate measurement result will not be possible if the glass is dirty. The shield plate is supplied with a protective sheet at the time of shipping. Please remove it before use.
(2) Measurement sample preparation
1.Input the name of the sample to be measured. (Refer to p18 7-1. Saving scanned images)
In the initialized state, Sample Name is displayed. The sample name specified here will be reflected in the saving file name (refer to p18 7-1. Saving scanned images) and EXCEL Data (refer to p18 73. Pasting measured results into EXCEL).
2.Gently pour about 25 mL of Freshness Meister reagent into a petri dish carefully, as not to bubble.
Please take care at this time not to make any air bubbles. Freshness Meister will view air bubbles as other objest, and may not measure the grains in compartments that contain bubbles. If bubbles are generated, use the supplied stick to break them or move them to the edge of the petri dish. The cover of the petri dish is a protective cover. It will not be used during the measurement.
3.Place the tray carefully in the petri dish.
Please take care at this time not to make any air bubbles. Any bubbles will not be generation by putting the side of the tray opposite the tray handle into the reagent at first. Becouse any bubbles influences result of a measurement, it will affect the scan, use the supplied stick to break them.
4.Pour the sample into the rice grain liner plate (= the liner plate). And, shaking the liner plate from front to back and from left to right in small motions with closeing the end hole for each rice grain enter the each hole on the the liner plate.
5.When the sample is lined up, tilt the liner plate and remove the excess sample through the end hole.
To achieve a precise measurement, sufficiently condition the sample grains to the ambient temperature. For this tester, we recommend a Note temperature of 15 to 30 C. If grains are cracked, depending on their size they may not be suitable for measurement. We recommend removing them with the tweezer. If the grains adhere to the arrangement block due to static electricity, you can remove this effect by wiping the surface of the arrangement block with a moist cloth or tissue.

6.Place rice grain liner plate on the tray.
Arrange the two such that the position of the legs of the raice grain liner plate and the indentation of the tray match. The side of the arrangement block with the end hole is the same as that of the tray handle.
7.Pull the lever of the raice grain liner plate and drop the sample into the tray.
Any grains that are floating may not be measured. Sink grains into place by using the stick.

(3) Measuring the Sample

1.Place the sample prepared in p13 (3) onto the glass face of the scanner prepared in p12 (2).
At this time, ensure the tray handle is up against the back side of the scanner. When moveing the petri dish, take great care to keep it containing horizontally in order to not spill Caution any reagent. When moving the petri dish to the scanner, hold the petri dish and take care not to touch the tray. Touching the tray may cause the sample to slide in Caution between the tray and petri dish, and the tray may not be detected.
2.After carefully closing the scanner cover, click on the [Measure] button.
If the message A tray position is undetectable is displayed, check p21 9. Error messages.
3.The measurement will finish in about 10 min.
Freshness Meister displays the processing intermediate results every minutes. Please keep the closing the scanner cover during measurement. Note When the measurement is complete, the measured result will be displayed. Freshness Meister can send the measured result to EXCEL and save the data. (Refer to p18 7-3. Pasting measured results into EXCEL) If you have checked An Image picture is Saved. in the Setting dialog, the scanned image will be saved. (Refer to p18 7-1. Saving scanned images) Dispose of the sample and wash the tray and petri dish. (Refer to p20 8. Maintenance)

The measurement ends.

6-4. Software display
Freshness Meister have three measured results screens: Measurement screen, pH Image screen and Scanned image screen. You can select these from the tab at the top of the screen.

7. Other functions

7-1. Saving scanned images
1.To save the scanned image, by selecting [Etc] --> [Detailed Setup], the Setting dialog box will be displayed. Next, check An image picture is saved.
T h e s c a n n e d i m a g e s w i l l b e s a v e d a t t h e measurement finished, under the sample name the user input before measerement. (Refer to p13 6-3. Measurement operation)
2.To specify the location in which to save the scanned images, select [Etc] --> [Detailed Setup] and the Setting dialog will appear. Next, click the [Folder] button and select the folder to save the file, or specify the save location by typing the Folder to save image directly.

7-2. Opening saved files

To open a saved file, select [Action] --> [File Open], A measurement picture is opened dialog will appear. Either select the name of the file you wish to view or type the file name, and click the [Open] button.

7-3. Output to EXCEL

If the PC has been installed with Microsoft EXCEL, it is possible to output the measured results to EXCEL. 1.After measurering finished, click the [EXCEL] button on the measurement screen.
Whenever the [EXCEL] button is pushed, the freshness master starts EXCEL. It enters the state that two or more EXCEL is started if EXCEL is not ended at each output, and save and close of EXCEL moderately.

7-4. Freshness Meister ranking
The FreshnessMeister has a presetted 5 evaluate distributions. The initial settings are Milled Standard in accordance with Japan Grain Inspection Association standard. The evaluate distributions without Milled Standard can change pH value, operat the software to chang the evaluate distributions. Select [Etc] --> [Detailed Setup], the Setting dialog will appear. Check the evaluate distribution that you wish to use in Division. Select the locations you wish to change, and change the values.
Milled Standard distribution cannot change the values.

Caution

7-5. Measurement long rice or short rice
For changing long rice or short rice, select Rice Type in the Setting dialog, like right picture. The following are necessary according to the measured object. 8. Uninstall

Please, operate the uninstalling software with log on managers group account. (Recommend; administrators group account) If "User account control (Vista)" dialog or any error dialogs (2000/XP) is displayed while uninstalling without log on managers group account, first of all, logoff from PC, and try to uninstall again after log on as a managers group account. Because of uninstallation cannot be completed in any case correctly without managers group account.
8-1. Uninstall the Freshness Meister
1.Click the [Start] --> [All Program] --> [Control Panel].
If you operate Windows2000, Click the [Start] --> [Settings] --> [Control Panel].
2.Double click the [Add or Remove Programs].
If you operate Windows2000, please select [Add / Remove Program]. If you operate Windows Vista, Click the [Programs and Features].
3.Select the [KETT FreshnessMeister], and click [Remove] or [Change / Remove] button.
If you operate Windows Vista, Select the [KETT FreshnessMeister], click the [Uninstall / Change]. If User account control is displayed, select [continue].

4.Click [Yes].

5.Click [Close].
8-2. Uninstall the EPSON scanner driver
1.Please operate same operation from P20 (1) to (2). 2.Select [EPSON TWAIN 5], and Click [Change / Remove].
If you operate Windows Vista, please select [EPSON TWAIN 5], click [uninstall]. If User account control is displayed, select [continue].

3.Click [Yes].

4.Click [Next]. Uninstalling will start.
On the way, please it selects responding to the environment of PC and advance it though the confirmation dialog like the right is displayed two or more times.

5.Click [Finish].

9. Maintenance

LReagent keeping

Please keep the reagent bottle in a cool and dark place. Do not use reagent with expiration date for use. The limit date for use is inscribed on the bottle label.
L Color test plate keeping
To avoid discolouration or fade away of the color test plate, ensure is it returned to its case and stored in a dark location.
L If you spill the reagent on the scanner
Clean up the reagent quickly using a soft cloth, and polish the scanner glass with lens cleaner.
L If the reagent is spilt on clothes or skin
The Freshness Meister reagent is non-harmful, however if leave long time, it is dificult to wash out the color. Wash quickly using soap or detergent. And, do not drink the reagent.
L Cleaning the tray and petri dish
After measuring, wash the tray and petri dish quickly in cold water and dry thoroughly. After washing in cold water, by dipping them in ethyl alcohol and then drying, drying can be achieved in a shorter time. Further, the same Petri dish and tray can be repeatedly used by washing. If reagent is leaving in the tray or petri dishes for a long time, it is dificult to wash out the color even if washed. If the color is stains, a correct evaluation result will not be achieved. If the tray is stained red, and this cannot be removed by washing, replace with a new tray. If the bottom of the petri dish becomes scratched, or stained red and this cannot be removed by washing, replace with a new petri dish.

For some reason, the PC and scanner are not communicating. Check the following. L If displayed directly after installing When the scanner is connected, remove the scanner and reboot the PC. Connect the scanner again after the PC is restarted. If the situation is still not rectified, follow p9 4. Setup and re-install the EPSON scanner driver. L If displayed during use 1.Is the status lamp color green? aIf the lamp is on and green, the condition is normal. aIf the lamp is off, check the scanner power supply. aIf the lamp is flashing red, this means that the scanners automatic diagnosis has found a problem. 2.Has the scanner been correctly recognized? aCheck EPSON GT-8300 is displayed on Device manager. (If is indicated, then for some reason, the scanner driver has not been correctly installed, or is damaged.) Remove the scanner from the PC, and reinstall in accordance with p9 4-1. and 4-2.
Check the points below, and make measurement in accordance with p15 6-3 (3). Measurement procedure. aIs the tray on the scanner glass? aIs the tray orientation correct? aIs the scanner glass dirty? aIs the petri dish soiled or stained? aIs any sample trapped between the tray bottom and Petri dish?

Check that EXCEL is installed on your PC. aIf it is not installed, please install. aIf it is installed, shutdown Freshness Meister, and measure again after restarting.

There is a possibility that grain cannot be recognized. aPlease sink grain that is the floatage of the tray each hole with the stick of the attachment poking.
It is counted fewer than the number of grain that exists in the tray. aPlease exchange it for the new one when there is a wound in the petri dish. aPlease clean it with the cleaner of the attachment when there is dirt on the glass face.
The number of result is not corresponding to the number of color balls.
Two or more grain is and there is an insertion possibility in one tray hole. In that case, the color ball is doubly displayed. Please, see scanned image screen with click [Picture] button.
