Adult occupant The passenger compartment remained stable during the frontal impact and the footwell remained intact. The dummy readings indicated good protection to the head and chest. There were hazardous structures in the fascia that posed a risk to both the driver and passenger knees. Child occupant The Child Restraint System (CRS) initially recommended by Toyota failed to protect the 3y old dummy during the frontal impact. The dummy head contacted the back of the driver seat. In the mean time Toyota has performed several tests with another CRS in co-operation with the CRS manufacturer which has resulted in the recommendation to use the Child Seat Rmer Duo. Toyota has informed Latin NCAP about the good results. Latin NCAP has not tested this Car CRS combination.

Adult occupant In the frontal impact the driver and passenger heads were both well protected by the restraint system. There were structures in the area of the fascia that could expose the occupants to risk if impacted by knees and the protection to the lower legs was marginal. During the impact, the boot lid opened posing the risk of ejection to the occupants. According to information from the manufacturer most of the Merivas sold in SA are not equipped with airbags. LatinNCAP selected this vehicle not based in a market reference but to compare it to the European Meriva tested by EuroNCAP. Child occupant The child seat for the 3 year old child was unable to prevent excessive forward movement during the impact, even with a large excursion the head of the dummy did not have contact with the driver backrest which is very important. The installation instructions on both child seats were insufficient and not permanently attached to the seat. The vehicle did not give any warnings as to the hazards associated with installing a rearward facing child seat on the front passenger seat with an active airbag.

Adult occupant The driver and passenger airbags offered good protection to the head. However, the protection offered to the driver's chest was marginal and there were hazardous structures in the area of the fascia that could be impacted by an occupants knees. The seat belts in the front were fitted with pretensioners (device that takes away slack in the webbing in an early stage of the impact and improves the performance of the seat belt) which did not perform properly during the impact. FIAT will review this issue together with the seat belt manufacturer. In addition the manufacturer told LN that they will improve the knee area shortly. Child occupant The installation instructions on both child seats were insufficient and not permanently attached to the seat. The recommended child seat was found to be incompatible with the belt system on the vehicle. Although the passenger airbag could be deactivated with a switch, there was insufficient instruction as to how the switch should be used. Never place a rearward facing child seat on the front passenger seat vehicle with and active airbag!

Adult occupant The driver and passenger airbags offered good protection of the head. However, there were hazardous structures in the driver's area of the fascia that could be impacted by the driver's knees. The protection to the driver's lower legs was poor due to high levels of foot pedal displacement and the poor structural performance of the footwell and floor. Only the top equipped version of this car (pack III) is available with airbags so lower versions do not have airbags. Child occupant The dynamic performance of the two child restraints was adequate. However, the installation instructions on both child seats were insufficient and not permanently attached to the seat. The recommended child seats were found to be incompatible with the belt system on the vehicle. It was not possible to disable the passenger airbag to allow for the installation of a child seat on the front passenger seat. Never place a rearward facing child seat on the front passenger seat vehicle with an active airbag!

Adult occupant The seatbelts and airbag were incapable of preventing the driver's chest from impacting the steering wheel during the impact, this resulted in a poor level of protection. The protection offered to the driver's legs was weak due to high leg loads and rearward pedal displacement. There were hazardous structures in the area of the fascia that could be impacted by an occupants knees. The body shell was not capable of withstanding further loading and ruptures to the footwell threatened the driver's feet. Child occupant The protection offered to both children was poor due to extremely high loads. The installation instructions on the child seats contained sufficient information to correctly instruct a user to safely install the seat. The instruction were permanently attached and are expected to last the lifetime of the seat. It was not possible to disable the passenger airbag to allow for the installation of a child seat on the front passenger seat. Never place a rearward facing child seat on the front passenger seat vehicle with and active airbag!.

The car has an airbag control tell-tale (light) in the instrument panel which will be illuminated after turning the ignition key and making contact. Unfortunately there were NO AIRBAGS in this car. The tell-tale may mislead consumers. Child occupant The protection offered to the 18 month child in the forward-facing child seat was poor due to extremely high neck loads. The head of the 3 year old suffered anomalies during the impact, the data of this child passenger was taken from the same child passenger of the same car fitted with airbags. The installation instructions on the child seats contained sufficient information to correctly instruct a user to safely install the seat. The instruction were permanently attached and are expected to last the lifetime of the seat.

The car was equipped with static 3 point belts in the rear, making safe installation of the CRS difficult. According to the manufacturer over 95% of the in SA manufactured Gols have 3-point automatic retractor belts instead of 3 point static belts.

Adult occupant The protection offered to the driver was poor for most body regions, the chest protection was weak. High loads were placed on all areas of the driver dummy. A significant amount of body shell collapse results in high displacement of the A-pillar, steering column and pedals. The body shell was not capable of withstanding any further loading. Installing an airbag in this car would not improve occupant protection as the body shell integrity is not good. Probably an airbags in this car would not improve the week body shell integrity. This car has a passenger airbag switch but it DOES NOT have an airbag. This device may mislead consumers to think that they have an airbag equipped car while it is not the case. Child occupant The dynamic performance of the 18 month child restraint was adequate. The 3 year old scored maximum points due to the extremely weak body shell that helped absorb impact energy. However, the installation instructions on both child seats were insufficient and not permanently attached to the seat. The recommended child seats were found to be incompatible with the belt system on the vehicle. This car was not equipped with a passenger airbag.
