Electra 1000
That which stirs emotion.
The Electra 1000 line was founded on an obvious fact: to make the heritage, technologies and performance once reserved for Utopia Be more accessible on an economic level of course but not only. We wanted to create a high-end line of loudspeakers in harmony with the integration requirements in the nowadays interiors, compact, attractive, sleek and balanced at the same time. We added an object dimension to our high-end line that entirely became a decoration element, while our technologic patrimony is maintained to tend towards very highend sound denition We entrusted our ideas and our innovations to a design group in Paris Pineau & Le Porcher who sketched out the rst contours in order to unite style and performance. In the end, there are two lines, Electra 1000 Be and Electra 1000 S, which are complete, ready for hi- and home theatre, and easy to install and use. They both elicit an emotional response in all who experience their sophisticated aesthetics and sensational performance.
> The birthplace of French industry, St-Etienne has become the European capital of design. Between tradition and modernism, Focal is rich with a unique savoir-faire, which allows it to rise to the status of a luxury manufacturer. All the R & D, the drive-unit manufacturing and loudspeaker assembly are concentrated on a single production site, where more than 200 people are driven by the same passion: to offer you the best of Focal loudspeakers.

From Beryllium.
To reach higher, we started lower
In 2003, the Utopia line inaugurated a revolutionary technology: the pure Beryllium inverted dome for which Focal now holds two manufacturing patents. Ultra-light (21mg), but rigid (7 times more rigid than titanium or aluminium for the same volume-mass), Beryllium possesses absolutely fantastic properties to create an exceptional tweeter. Add to this the capability to surpass 40kHz without break-up, and at high-pressure levels. Last but not least, it stands out with excellent linearity thanks to its high internal damping, which inhibits resonance and distortion at the far reach of its frequency range. For Electra 1000 Be, we decided however to direct our attention to an entirely other direction, as we felt that there remained other challenges to pursue and that the 40kHz that we had achieved was certainly sufficient for perfect reproduction of treble. Our new goal with the IAL (Infinite Acoustic Loading: the creation of an extremely high-bandwidth tweeter, that would be able to descend in frequency as far as possible, in order to take over from the midrange as early as possible. The stakes: create a design where the critical frequency range of 2000 to 5000Hz, where the ear is most sensitive, can be reproduced by an ultra-light tweeter dome and not by a midrange where the much-heavier membrane can no longer ideally perform.
> The unique structure of the IAL tweeter permits a free space behind the dome of the tweeter, charged with a practically infinite air volume. Thanks to the Poron suspension, the resonant frequency, which is the principal factor limiting a tweeter in the midrange, is considerably lower.
> The technology IAL (Infinite Acoustic Loading), a chamber system perfectly tuned to lower the resonant frequency of the tweeter, also succeeds in improving the linearity along the extremely long frequency band, from 2000 to 40 000Hz.
> IAL structure, pure Beryllium dome, Electra 1000 Be range.
> Focal is the only manufacturer in the world to master all the steps in the fabrication of a pure Beryllium dome on its production site, from development and optimization to forming (patented process).
. to Aluminum/Magnesium
> Tweeter Aluminium/Magnsium, ligne Electra 1000 S.
In 2007, the Electra line splits up in two families with the arrival of the Electra 1000 S line. This one offers more accessible technical and aesthetic solutions, but keeps intact the initial spirit of Electra. One of the most outstanding changes concerns the adoption of a new tweeter with a dome made in surface-treated Aluminum/Magnesium alloy. This tweeter is widely influenced by the one of the Electra 1000 Be Beryllium version, without the IAL system, as it takes up the same Neodymium magnet
(for a shield of almost 2 Tesla in the gap), the same Poron surround and the same solid Zamac injected housing. Performance is still in the Electra spirit, naturally very high.
> Reference multi-channel system, 1037 Be front and 1027 Be rear.
> The two lines Electra 1000 Be and Electra 1000 S strictly use the same midrange and woofer.
The composite W sandwich
Mastery through our know-how
The composite W sandwich, invented by Focal in 1995 for the first Grande Utopia was endowed with a performance without equivalent, at least 20 times superior to the most sophisticated, advanced competitive technologies. This technology, designed and manufactured by hand by Focal is the essential key to the definition and the precision of the Electra 1000 loudspeakers. After many successive developments, W appears here in its ultimate evolution. Sheets of glass become denser, layers of foam become more variable. we are able to fine-tune the response curve of each drive-unit as we prioritize mass, rigidity or damping, depending on the frequency range we wish to recreate, while at the same time we maintain a perfect, pistonlike action. To bring the perfect drive-unit design to the source, without turning to mechanical or electrical corrections is the only imaginable high-end solution. All drive-units as well as W cones which equip the Electra 1000 series are manufactured by Focal in Saint-Etienne: this is the sole guarantee that we can master all the steps of design, prototype, manufacturing and quality control of these essential components.
> With equal membrane mass and diameter, the rigidity and flexibility index of the W sandwich outclasses the most employed materials.
> Single-skin, 3 (8cm) midrange in W composite, for the centre channel Electra CC 1000 Be.
> Double-skin, 7 (18cm) woofer in W composite, Electra 1037 Be.

When style and technology meet, harmony arises
Entrusted to the design house Pineau & Le Porcher with which Focal collaborated on its other speaker lines, we wished to create in Electra 1000 a pure line of simple, natural beauty, where each style element would harmonize with the technical necessities to create the best speaker possible. With Electra 1000, nothing comes for free. Each curve is studied to bring a tangible response and correction to a given problem. The tweeter housing and coupling is a moulded, solid piece of aluminium alloy, which represents an ultra-stable mechanical reference, with absolutely no vibration. Every aspect of Electra 1000 has a purpose, such as the non-parallel side panels which lighten the geometry and diffuse standing waves, or the base that conceals the otherwise unattractive port, while at the same time radically reduces the phenomena of dynamic compression in the lower bass. But the principal innovation would be the rounded aluminum baffle of the loudspeaker. This form, which is taken up in the shape of the tweeter housing and into the side panels, suppresses hard edges which are usually responsible for diffraction or edge effects surrounding the tweeter. A novel and original approach to the highend loudspeaker segment which lends all its strength to the Electra 1000 line.
> Electra SR 1000 Be
Multi-channel sound
We havent forgotten the magic that is Home Theatre!
New high-definition video formats are arriving, with matching high quality sound: little compression of weak signals, very high dynamics, very wide bandwidth, exceptional definition home theatre sound finally achieves high-definition. The multi-channel Electra 1000 Be and Electra 1000 S series were designed in this spirit in order to allow truly exceptional performance at all levels, whether it be in terms of definition, power and obviously 3D coherence. All our technologies that are so appreciated in stereo, such as Beryllium or Aluminum/Magnesium domes, IAL, W sandwich cones, Advanced (Gamma) structure, lend themselves admirably to this new high-resolution multi-channel environment And for the rest, we innovated with a three-way centre channel speaker, with perfectly controlled directivity, BASH subwoofer, Bi/Twin surround sound speaker which enables a multitude of configurations
> Electra SR 1000 S
SR 1000
The Electra SR 1000 Be and SR 1000 S effect loudspeakers are true speakercabinet masterpieces with an incredibly complex assembly. The design of its round baffle in solid MDF was dictated by the same philosophy of the other loudspeakers in the Electra 1000 line: eliminate the cabinet edge effects in terms of diffraction, bandwith non-linearity as well as a poorly-controlled directivity. It exists in two versions, with Beryllium tweeter or Aluminum/Magnesium tweeter, adapted to the two lines of Electra 1000.
> Thanks to the Bi/Twin selector,The SR 1000 Be and SR 1000 S can function in two different modes. They are ideal to create a 6.1 or 7.1 configuration with only one pair of speakers or for multi-purpose listening of home theatre and SACD. For the enthusiast of bipole or direct effects, : this switch is an offering of true simplicity.
> Electra CC 1000 Be: 8cm IAL tweeter on a solid aluminium housing.
CC 1000
The CC 1000 Be and CC 1000 S center speakers take up the same principle of the Focal three-way phase geometry for a homogeneous distribution of energy. The timbre, perfectly in symbiosis with the sonic signature of the other speakers in the Electra 1000 series, the very minimal horizontal directionality and exceptional linearity over a large frequency band constitute many rare qualities for these truly exceptional centre speakers.
> Electra CC 1000 Be Signature on top. Electra CC 1000 S Classic below.
SW 1000 Be
With a digital 24 bit processor, extended setting possibilities and a digital BASH amplifier of 700 Watt RMS, the Electra SW 1000 Be subwoofer ensures high level output, a low roll-off at 23Hz and a sound pressure level of 119dB. Original functions permit a very high level of performance even in rooms with smaller dimensions and without the risk of saturation.
SW 1000 S
Closely derived from SW 1000 Be, the SW 1000 S takes up the essential characteristics in a more compact version with a 10 5/8 (27cm) woofer and a 450 Watt Bash amplifier. All the parameter digital functions of the subwoofer are maintained.
> The wireless remote of SW 1000 Be and SW 1000 S permits access to all digital parametric filtering functions and menus of the subwoofer.
> The backlit LCD display always indicates processor status. The setting possibilities are important, as well as their accessibility and can be saved in three user memories.
> Derived from the TFP (Turbulence Free Port) port system of the Sub Utopia yet in a more compact configuration, the expanded profile of the port pushes the air noise turbulence responsible for distortion and dynamic compression down into the infrabass.
> Supplied adjustable spikes and plastic feet.

Living with your loudspeakers
The Electra 1007 Be can be mounted to two different optional stands: the S 1007.1 Standard, with a sand-lled aluminium column, or the truly remarkable S 1007.1 High Gloss in a Slate Grey lacquer nish, the same as on the body of the loudspeaker. The stand is particularly heavy and inert as it has a large internal metal bar. In both cases, the loudspeaker is directly mounted to the stand to guaranty the greatest stability and a perfect mechanical coupling. The Standard stand is the one that suits best the Electra 1007 S in terms of aesthetics. The Electra 1007 Be, 1007 S, 1027 S, CC 1000 Be and CC 1000 S are shipped with a foam bung which can be inserted into the rectangular rear port. Its purpose is to inhibit the free ow of air out of the cabinet in order to tailor the bass response. This is a very useful
tool if the loudspeaker is placed too close to a rear wall or if the acoustics of the room prove difcult to control regarding bass response.

The Electra 1007 Be symbolises a two way, compact statement to the very high end in the Focal language. An impressive bass depth and transparency for a loudspeaker of these dimensions. It comes with a foam bung to be placed when necessary into the port slot to control the level of bass.
The Electra 1027 Be is an exceptional 3-way loudspeaker! Its thoroughbred lines, truly unique finish, its very strong personality have no equal other than that of the Utopia Be technology. A true high-end product with a human face, thanks to its mastered shape; a key product in the Focal line-up.
A 2007 newcomer, the Electra 1037 Be adopts DNA from 1027 Be, but replaces the two 61/2 (16.5cm) woofers in W sandwich by three 7 (18cm) woofers. Authority, rapidity and solidity in the bass add to the fine Electra 1000 Be sonic signature and pedigree.
The Electra CC 1000 Be center channel speaker inaugurates the 3 way Focal design adapted to the pure Beryllium technology of IAL. The timbre, perfectly matched to the sound aesthetic of the other loudspeakers and its controlled horizontal directivity and exceptional linearity represent many rare qualities for a truly exceptional center channel speaker.

The new Al/Mg tweeter perfectly suits this superb loudspeaker that seduces with its communicative energy and its mid-range/treble, sparkling with details. Like the Electra 1007 Be, the quality of the bass, which is technically identical, is impressive, even in rooms of large dimensions. Thats a highrange compact loudspeaker with an exceptional quality/price ratio.
This elegant floorstander impresses by its outstanding bass power considering its moderate size. Its sharpness, its definition, its perfect balance between extreme bass and extreme treble will be appreciated on any music type, at a high or low sound level and make of the 1027 S the queen of versatility.
The CC 1000 S is much more than a simple inspiration of the Beryllium version. It has the same three-way structure for an ideal directivity on the horizontal level, without accident on the response curve, the same woofers and the same mid-range. Its Al/Mg tweeter is of course in total harmony with the loudspeakers of the Electra 1000 S line.
Like the CC 1000 S, the SR 1000 S takes up the essential of the surround speaker Electra Be. This loudspeaker is actually equipped with the Bi/Twin system that permits to make it work in a bipolar mode or double monoral to constitute a 7.1 system from only two surround speakers.

If the SW 1000 S takes up the essential of the Be version technologies, its clearly more compact with a 27cm woofer to facilitate integration. Its 114dB SPL are ideal for rooms up to 50m2, even at a high sound level, for Home Theatre or an outstanding triphonic system.

What makes the difference
Electra 1000 S is a line that fully benefits from the basics of Electra 1000 Be that appeared in 2005, but clearly more accessible. We found the technical solutions to maintain Focal sound and design at the highest level. Apart from the new Al/Mg tweeter, which was made from the model of the pure Beryllium tweeter, Electra 1000 S adopts a highrange finish, slightly less developed, compared to Electra 1000 Be that uses 11 successive varnish coats on its side panels 4 coats for Electra 1000 S. Besides, the metallic lacquer of Be gives way to a new black satin lacquer. So thats the whole Electra 1000 line that is suggested to a larger but demanding public, through two complete and perfectly complementary lines.

User precautions
Thank you for choosing the Electra Be loudspeakers. We are pleased to share with you our philosophy: the Spirit of Sound. These high performance speakers feature the latest technical developments from Focal in terms of speaker design, whether it is for high fidelity or home theater systems. In order to (make the most of these speakers) enjoy the maximum of their performance, we advise you to read this users manual and to keep it carefully so that you can consult it later.
Special precautions regarding the Beryllium dome tweeter In its solid form, Beryllium is harmless. However, due to its nature, certain special precautions should be observed to avoid exposure to unnecessary risk. Under no circumstances should the Beryllium dome be subjected to any form of abrasive action. To ensure no accidental damage to the tweeter dome it is advised to carefully replace the magnetic protection grille. In the unlikely case of damage to the dome, of any form, the supplied piece of adhesive tape should be immediately used to seal the whole front surface of the tweeter. The protective cover should then be replaced and also taped securely in place. You should then inform the dealer from whom you purchased the product so that the tweeter can be removed by a professional and returned to the product distributor for replacement. If the dome is broken in any way giving rise to loose particles of Beryllium, these should be carefully collected with the use of an adhesive tape and sealed in a zip-top bag to be returned with the tweeter. For further information, please contact Focal-JMlab directly: beryllium@focal-fr.com
Magnetic disturbance The Electra Be line speakers generate a magnetic leakage that may interfere with other sensitive household appliances. It is strongly advised not to place the speakers closer than 50cm to your TV screen. Frame geometry as well as colours can be severely distorted by a magnetic field if the loudspeaker is placed too close to the cathode ray tube. Generally, every sensitive element (audio tapes, video tapes, magnetic data storages, projector and CRTS overhead-projector) should not be placed too close to non-shielded loudspeakers. User precautions All the products in the Electra Be range are lacquered in order to offer a resistant cabinet surface and to make the upkeep easy. We recommend the use of a dry cloth to dust your pair of loudspeakers. If the loudspeaker is stained, then use a damp cloth. Never use any solvents, detergents, alcohol or corrosive products, scrappers or scouring powder to clean the surface of the loudspeaker. Avoid placing the loudspeakers near a heat source.

Running-in period The drivers used in the loudspeaker are complex mechanical devices and require an run-in period before they deliver their best performance. They must get adapted to the temperature and humidity conditions of their environment. This breaking-in period depends on the encountered conditions and can last several weeks. In order to shorten this period, we advise you to let your loudspeakers operate for about twenty hours at medium level, playing standard musical programmes, but with a large amount of bass. Once the components of the loudspeakers are completely stabilized, it is possible to enjoy the real performance of your loudspeakers.
Specifications Pure Beryllium inverted dome IAL (Infinite Acoustic Loading). "W" cone (midrange and woofer). Advanced "Gamma" structure. OPC (Optimum Phase Crossover). Low distorsion and noise laminar port. Highly efficient acoustic damping. High reliable input sockets. Decoupling spikes supplied.

installation
Positioning The loudspeakers have been engineered to deliver the most faithful sound reproduction, whether they are used for music or home cinema. In order to enhance their performance, to guarantee a high quality of listening, sound image and tone balance, it is important to note the following basic rules. The listening area must be located at the summit of an equilateral triangle whose two other points of insertion are determined by the position of each speaker. Nevertheless it is possible to modify these distances to find an ideal compromise according to the particular disposition of the room (fig. A). Each loudspeaker must be placed at the same height and on the same floor plan. The tweeter should be at the same height as the listeners ear, when the listener is in their usual listening area (fig. B). Avoid placing the loudspeakers too close to the rooms corners or walls. This will induce some unwanted room resonance and artificially increase bass response. On the contrary, if the bass level proves to be insufficient, it is possible to move the speakers closer to the walls to adjust the bass level (fig. C). Optimization To please the perfectionists, we shall give an optimum positioning formula : if A is the distance from the boomer centre to the closest wall (floor or wall), B the intermediate distance and C the longest distance (A<B<C), the relation B2=AC determines the ideal position of the speakers (fig. D).
Example 1: The boomer centre is 60cm (24) from the floor (B=60cm) (mini speaker on a foot), standing 50cm (20) from the back wall (A=50cm), the side wall will be ideally 72cm (28) (C=B2 A=72cm). Example 2: the boomer centre is 30cm (12) from the floor (column speaker) (A=30cm), 1m (39) from the back wall (C=1m), the clearance with respect to the side walls will be B=AC=54.7cm (22). Important Stylish driver protective caps conjoined to the loudspeaker. Do not remove for optimized performances. Connections The Electra Be input sockets ensure reliable multipurpose connections for stripped cables as well as for plugs. It is imperative to respect the connector polarity of both the loudspeaker and amplifier. The positive terminal + must be connected to the corresponding (matching) amplifiers terminal and the negative terminal - to the negative terminal (fig. E). Stereo image, soundstaging and bass perception would be seriously compromised if these conditions were not respected.
User instructions The sound rendition of the loudspeaker depends strongly upon the listening rooms acoustics, the place of the loudspeakers and the listening area. These factors can be modified in order to correct or enhance a desired effect. Should the soundstage be imprecise or not centred, try to move the loudspeakers closer to each other. Harsh or aggressive sound means that your listening room is probably too reflective. Try to use any absorbing materials (such as tapestries, sofa, wall coverings, curtains) combined with reflective materials to absorb or diffuse resonances. Should the sound be flat or muffled, there are too many absorbing materials in the listening room. The sound appears to be closed-in, with a narrow stereophonic image. Try to find a better compromise between absorbing and reflective materials within your listening room. Generally the wall to the rear of the speakers should be made up of reflective materials so that the sound image exhibits satisfying volume and width. On the contrary the wall on the rear of the listener should be absorbing in order to avoid reflections damaging the perception of the stereo soundstage. These reflections may limit the impression of depth of the sound image. Furniture, such as bookshelves should be ideally placed along the side walls in order to diffuse sound waves and to prevent some frequencies from being amplified, especially in vocal range (it removes flutter echo).

Home theater
Choice of speakers Yours loudspeakers have been engineered to work with stereo systems as well as with home theater systems. If you already own a pair of stereo Electra Be loudspeakers and wish to purchase a complete home theater system, it is of the utmost importance that you use the central and effect loudspeakers of the same product line. It is the sole possible condition to bring to your system a perfect tonal homogeneity and a realistic and coherent reproduction of tri-dimensional effects within the listening room. Central channel placement Central channel speakers should be placed close to the TV-screen to obtain a proper placement and a realistic reproduction of the dialog. They could be placed below or above the TV-screen if your TV-unit permits (fig. F, G). If a standart projection screen is used, the central channel speaker must be placed under the screen. If an acoustically transparent projection screen is used, the central channel speaker can be placed behind and at the bottom of the screen (fig. H).
Effect channel speakerss place The soundtrack mix for a film or music encoded in multichannel format is very complex and allows the listener to benefit from a wide range of special sound effects, which require the use of effect channel speakers. In order to obtain a realistic 3D soundstage, the placement of the speakers is decisive, even when confronted with a restrictive disposition of the listening room. For enhanced performances, the following elements should be noted. Avoid placing the effect speakers too far from the listening area otherwise the sound perception will be altered. In order to obtain surround effects, with great sound density we advise you to place the speakers against the sidewalls on each side of the listening room (fig. I, J). Place the effect speakers at a suitable height, slightly above the listeners ears (fig. K).
A / V amplifiers include compensation systems, which allows to set the delay applied on each channel. In certain conditions, the distance between each speaker and the listening area may vary. The latest high-level film soundtracks are now mixed in 6.1. This system requires the use of one or two central surround channel speakers (depending on the amplifier) which should be placed behind the listening area. If two effect speakers are used simultaneously, make sure that they are not too far from each other (less than one meter; 40 inches) in order to obtain the best results.

Accessories Floorstanding loud-speaker systems include four decoupling spikes and four butyl cone and could be screwed, if necessary, into the four metal inserts situated on the base of the loudspeaker. These spikes ensure a better stability for floorstanding speakers, particularly if the floor is not perfectly flat and smooth. This stability improves clarity in bass and midrange by decoupling the system from the floor and thus reducing floorborn resonances. This required stability allows the energy delivered by the woofers membrane to be integrally converted into sound. The enclosed spikes are adjustable in height. After having adjusted the height of the spikes, dont forget to lock them with the locknut. When the use of the spikes proves to be necessary, we advise you to place a piece of metal (such as a coin) between the floor and the spike in order to avoid scratching a tiled floor. Bookshelf speakers can be placed on an optional stand specially developed for them.
About amplifiers Contrary to what one might think, it is not a too powerful amplifier that might damage a loudspeaker, but rather a lack of power. Actually if the output level of the amplifier is too high it will saturate and distort which will irremediably damage the tweeter. The power handling and frequency response of the loudspeakers is good enough to highlight the qualities or weak points of the amplifiers they are combined with. Let your retailer help you make the right choice, matching your personal taste and budget.
Cable Dont underestimate the importance of the cable: make sure you chose the appropriate section and length. Let your retailer advise you. Conditions of guarantee All Focal loudspeakers are covered by guarantee drawn up by the official Focal distributor in your country. Your distributor can provide all details concerning the conditions of guarantee. Guarantee cover extends at least to that granted by the legal guarantee in force in the country where the original purchase invoice was issued.
