Freebox goes Wi-Fi and becomes a router!
Free simplifies its customers connections using the Freebox v3 by allowing them to connect to the network through Wi-Fi and share their Internet connection free of charge
All subscribers using the Freebox v3, whether in unbundled or bundled zones, can now have cordless, secure Internet connection and share their connection. The Wi-Fi function allows secure, cordless high speed Internet connection between the Freebox and the computer but also, using the modems router function, this Internet access can be shared between several terminals using the same connection. The router function allows free connection of several computers via Ethernet or Wi-Fi or even USB on the Freebox and allows them simultaneous connection to the Internet. In this way, Freebox facilitates connection of its customers, in particular those whose PC and TV are not in the same room, or who have several computers and wish to network them. To benefit from the Wi-Fi function, just order a PCMCIA card from the www.free.fr website which will adapt to the Freebox. This card will be invoiced 27 inc. VAT (debited in three 9 monthly payments with the next three Free High Speed invoices). Workstations connected through Wi-Fi should be fitted with a Wi-Fi adaptor meeting the 802.11.b standard. To activate and configure the router function of the Freebox on the Free website, users should go to http://adsl.free.fr/admin/routeur.html. This function is free of charge. Free launches the first ADSL 2+ service in Europe
In light of the ARTs decision (French Telecommunications Regulatory Authority) to approve the ADSL 2+ technology in France, Free will be the first ISP to offer this technology to its subscribers. For 29.99 per month, Free unbundled subscribers will benefit from 15 Mbps download speed and 1 Mbps upload (subject to copper line characteristics). Starting in August, Free subscribers have been provided a FreeBox Version 4 which features ADSL 2+ technology. A paying replacement offer for old FreeBox holders will soon be proposed. The 15 Mbps offer is already accessible to all unbundled subscribers equipped with a FreeBox Version 4 in the cities where amended version DSLAMs have been deployed (see appendix). The ADSL 2+ service zones will be expanded in the near future. Free unbundled areas cover over 1,000 towns, ie more than 50% of the French population. Frees ADSL offering1 in unbundled areas is the only full triple-play service in France, with the following key features : 6 Mbps of download speed; Toll-free local and national calls to any fixed line in metropolitan France; Over 110 TV channels in digital quality and stereo sound, 42 of which are paying channels. In non-unbundled areas, Free subscribers enjoy for 29.99 per month the highest level of services : 2 Mbps Internet connection as well as toll-free local and national calls to any fixed line in metropolitan France. Free continues to be committed to the non-unbundled areas in stark opposition to its competitors, who only focus on unbundled areas as a consequence of France Telecoms regional discrimination strategy.
