JETSON High-class Easy PC makes computing a pleasure
PCs that are easy to use and upgrade are becoming increasingly important to users. Ease of use and easy expandability, together with an attractive design that stands out both in color and styling from the traditional plain gray PC box, are the outstanding features of the JETSON, the high-class Easy PC from Fujitsu Siemens Computers. The JETSON is an Easy PC as defined in the Intel and Microsoft specifications. It is built using professional PC components. The reduced complexity concept significantly increases the stability of the system in normal operation.

Highlights

Design The JETSON puts the accent squarely on making computing a pleasurable activity. More than just an Easy PC which, as the name implies, is simple and uncomplicated for the user to operate and expand, it is also a design object. With its silver aluminum case and small dimensions, the JETSON fits in any environment equally at home in well laid-out offices, customer areas, booking or counter halls, or quite simply in the users private living room. The JETSONs case consists of a die-cast aluminum shell and a diamond black insert at the front, which houses a CD-ROM or DVD drive and 2 concealed USB ports. A wireless radio keyboard with integral touchpad permits comfortable working free of an irritating mess of cables. For customers who want a full size keyboard, the USB Professional keyboard and USB mouse are designed to harmonize with the JETSON. Easy to use The JETSON will appeal to anyone to whom pleasure in working with the PC is very important. Users wanting simply to use their PC instead of converting it, more concerned with content rather than tool, form the target group for the JETSON. Users expect an Easy PC to be more than just easier to use, they are also looking for high stability and easy expandability. The JETSON meets these requirements. The interfaces are a further feature of this innovative concept. If you look at the rear of the JETSON, what immediately strikes you is the absence of any non-Plug & Play-aware interfaces. Serial and parallel or PS/2 ports are replaced entirely by the USB interfaces. External devices such as printers or scanners are easy to connect via USB and are instantly detected as new components. Page 2 of 6 Legacy Free PC Legacy Free is one of the new trends in the PC industry. Legacy Free means not only the removal of traditional, nonPlug & Play-aware interfaces such as serial and parallel, game or PS/2 ports, it also imposes special requirements on the hardware, the BIOS and the preinstallation. The hardware, for example, must not provide any ISA slots or devices, and no floppy disk controller must be detected. The BIOS must meet certain minimum requirements, which include no dependence on ISA devices at boot time and support for USB devices in the boot operation. The BIOS must also support ACPI Version 1.0b. There are also guidelines governing preinstallation. For example, it must be possible to reinstall the system from a bootable CD or DVD, and the system unit must have at least 2 free USB ports that are not used by components bundled with the system. MS-DOS must not be required to install or run tools, games or other software provided with the system. In the JETSON, all the important components traditionally implemented by means of add-in cards are already included on-board, e.g. graphics, audio, LAN. This eradicates major sources of error at a stroke. Reduced complexity concept therefore means legacy-free and no slots. Lower support and service costs The reduced complexity concept implemented in the JETSON enables support and service costs to be cut by about a third. The stability of the overall system is significantly increased and the total cost of ownership is much lower than with conventional systems. Silent PC Pleasure in working with the computer is also ensured by the low noise level of the JETSON. The use of hydraulically damped hard disks and a large, temperature-controlled fan reduce the noise generated by the system. The sound pressure level is 23 dB in standby mode and 27 dB in operation mode. High-speed Internet access With the JETSON, network access is already integrated. This is ideal for the increasingly widespread broadband Internet accesses via xDSL. In many cases, one network access is the xDSL interface. The xDSL interface and the JETSON are simply connected via a network cable. With xDSL, data rates from 768 Kbps to several Mbps can be achieved, depending on provider. These data rates with xDSL are at least 10 times higher than data rates achieved using an ISDN cable. An external USB analog or USB ISDN modem option is also available for providing access to the Internet. xDSL White Paper: http://extranet.fujitsu-siemens.com/pc/pc Advanced Configuration and Power Management Interface (ACPI) The JETSON meets all the hardware and software requirements for ACPI. A key feature in ACPI is the Save-to-RAM function (S3). With Save-to-RAM, the most recently open applications are available again very quickly. In less than 15 seconds after pressing the power-on switch on the system, the user is returned to the point at which he or she was last working. In S3 powersave mode, the PC consumes less than 5 watts. Thanks to the reduced complexity concept, ACPI can be implemented particularly reliably in the JETSON. ACPI White Paper: http://extranet.fujitsu-siemens.com/pc/pc Expandability via USB Easy expandability is guaranteed in the JETSON, courtesy of four USB ports two at the front and two at the rear. Peripheral devices such as USB printer, USB floppy disk drive or USB modem are detected by means of Plug & Play functionality and can also be used immediately with no complicated configuration and usually without having to restart the system. The standardized USB connector makes connecting peripherals very easy. Peripheral devices The innovative design elements of the JETSON are also repeated in selected peripheral devices. A radio keyboard with integral touchpad or a color-coordinated USB keyboard and a USB design mouse are included as part of the product package. Options available include an USB floppy drive in the same aluminum design.

Page 3 of 6 Logistics concept The JETSON is manufactured in Germany. The JETSON BASIC and JETSON POWER models are recommended configurations intended to help in positioning the product, in proposals, and in quantity planning. A miniconfigurator is provided for greater flexibility. For example, processor, memory, DVD, CD-ROM or hard disk can be configured. The user can also choose between the Microsoft Windows Me and Windows 2000 Professional operating systems. Awards JETSON is the winner of the Intel Innovative PC Award 2000 and the winner of the award from PC Professionell Innovation of the year 2000/2001.

Market

Positioning The JETSON is positioned to compete against rival products such as iPAQ from Compaq, WebPC from Dell, ePC from Hewlett Packard and NetVista from IBM, as well as other Design and Internet PCs from other manufacturers. All the major manufacturers are currently working on the development of Design and Internet PCs for the business and consumer markets.

Products and services

Chipset The JETSON features the Intel 815 chipset. It supports 100/133 MHz front-side bus. Graphics. Audio and USB controller are integrated in the chipset. All JETSON models feature LAN (Intel 82559) on board. BIOS The BIOS permits multibooting from hard disk, CD-ROM, USB devices and LAN. Extended BIOS features: Supports S3 (Save-to-RAM) powersave function Advanced Configuration and Power Management Interface (ACPI) 1.0b Universal Serial Bus (USB) Legacy Support Main memory The JETSON features 133 MHz SDRAM (Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory) modules. The maximum memory configuration is 512 MB using 2 DIMM modules. Hard disks The JETSON includes a Fast IDE Ultra DMA 66 hard disk controller. This permits a high data transfer rate to the hard disk. The IDE hard disk capacity is 20 GB. The silent hard disks used are hydraulically damped and so reduce the noise level of the JETSON significantly, particularly when the hard disk is accessed. Internal drives The JETSON comes with a 24-speed slimline CD-ROM drive or 6-speed slimline DVD-ROM drive. The slimline drives are necessary because of the compact dimensions of the systems. External drives External drives, such as a standard floppy disk drive, a 120 MB floppy disk drive (LS-120) or CD writer, can be connected via USB. Graphics The graphics processor is integrated in the Intel chipsets. The graphics supports 16 million colors at 85 Hz at a screen resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels. At a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels, 256 colors are displayed at 75 Hz. Audio In the JETSON, the Audio Codec 97 standard is integrated in the chipset. The audio module possesses full-duplex capability and so is intrinsically suitable for Internet telephony. As data can be transferred in two directions, both called and calling party can speak simultaneously. The audio module is Soundblaster-compatible and supports DirectX and DirectMusic.

Page 4 of 6 Operating system The JETSON is supplied to the customer with Microsoft Windows Me or, optionally, with Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional preinstalled. Microsoft Me is recommended for consumer environment, Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional for business environment. These further developments of Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft NT 4.0 Workstation improve the stability of the work platform. Windows XP Professional Windows XP contains the benefits of both Windows Me and Windows 2000. Windows XP combines the multimedia support of Windows Me together with the stability of Windows 2000. For consumers new features like Windows Movie Maker, Windows Image Acquisition, Windows Media Player 8.0, Improved IEEE 1394 support and home networking support have been included. Windows XP Professional offers all of the benefits of Windows 2000 Professional, while extending these benefits by enhancing the core functionality, particularly in the areas of compatibility, mobility, reliability, and manageability. Windows XP Professional will add new features such as Remote Assistance, Remote Desktop, and improvements to help and support that will further reduce administrative costs. Windows XP Professional has also been developed with Microsofts.NET strategy in mind, meaning that it will become a platform for delivering important.NET services, such as Instant Messaging and Passport authentication. As soon as it becomes available, the operating system can be installed on JETSON PC with 128 MB main memory. Hardware requirements are designed and compatible with Windows XP. Software recovery CD To guarantee complete service, Fujitsu Siemens Computers supplies the JETSON with a software recovery CD. With the aid of this CD, the ex works preinstallation can easily be restored. The installation process starts as soon as the CD is loaded, so even a novice user can restore the original installation quickly and without fuss. This CD is encrypted and can only be used on JETSON systems. Warranty Country-specific warranty models are offered for the JETSON.
