The first Nintendo Entertainment System was an 8-bit video game console The controller had four buttons and a directional pad The original control deck cost around $130

Next Step

In 1991 was the release of the Super Nintendo game system, costing around $200 The console was a 16-bit video game system which was to have much better graphics as well as sound quality than the original
Controller changed as well, adding two more buttons on the right side Competition with Sega is said to be one of the biggest in game console history Comparable to the Microsoft vs. Sony battle today (X-box and Playstation)

The Big One

In 1996 The Nintendo 64 Game System was released in the United States. The console was the first 64-bit game system! Upon its release came two games as well, Super Mario 64, and Pilotwings 64

Hardware

Had an R4300i microprocessor created for the plans Companies MIPS Technologies and Silicon Graphics created the microprocessor and the 3D graphics hardware and made the Nintendo 64 game system possible Used a VR4300 by NEC as the microprocessor
Had a 64-bit RCP (Reality Co-Processor) This was responsible for both the sound quality as well as the picture/graphics quality Had 4 megabytes of internal memory, with an Expansion Pak available to purchase

The Controller

The controller contained 10 buttons total, one analog stick, a directional pad, and a porthole for a Controller Pak The Controller Pak was an extra memory card The company would sell the controller in a variety of different colors.

The games for the Nintendo 64 were in the form of a cartridge Using ROM, having 4 MB up to 64 MB depending on the game itself Enclosed in a plastic case and were very durable

Game Paks

Hard to duplicate as apposed to the compact disc for the Playstation Also the durability was an advantage in avoiding damage as apposed to the compact disc for Playstation.

Whos it for?

Like most all game systems, the Nintendo 64 was geared toward a younger audience Games like Super Mario 64 and Donkey Kong were among the many popular games for younger audience This doesnt mean that there wasnt games directed to a more mature audience
There was also a group of games that were for more mature players that were greatly successful EX. Resident Evil, Turok, Doom, Mortal Kombat, and finally Golden Eye

The Movies

Collaboration with movies was a big seller for the Nintendo 64

1st Person Shooter

In 1997 Nintendo released the game GoldenEye 007 The game was a major evolution in the world of 1st person shooter games Is considered to be the greatest of its genre and is still played often to this day
The Nintendo 64 console was extremely successful selling around 33 million units The game Super Mario 64 sold almost 12 million copies Mario Kart 64 sold around 9 million copies GoldenEye 007 would go on to sell around 8 million copies

Since then

Nintendo would go on to produce several new game systems both for at home and portable
