Game Rules

The official, licensed FIFA Soccer 2007 product must be used. No arbitrary changes are allowed. The abilities of teams and players cannot be modified as well. All graphics and other settings can only be setup through the in-game menu. Configuration files are not allowed. Maximum allowed resolution is 1024x768. All options must be selected before the game begins. Any match result will be accepted whether the game settings were correct or not. You may not score a goal from your own half. After every goal, competitors must let the replay run to confirm the shot was legal. FIFA Multi Tool is required by both players to set the difficulty level (Hamachi tool is not allowed). Outside of the goalkeeper area (5m), only short corners and long crosses are allowed. Players may change the file devdata.dat because of known incompatibilities with some gamepads. The rocketpass is not allowed.

After every goal is scored or at the beginning of each half, all players must kick-off with a backward pass. Direct shots at kick-offs are not allowed. You cannot change the midfield or attacking players to deactivate the covering of your opponent. If you want to change a tactic or formation, you must pass the ball to your opponent after the change. Long balls are not allowed. There is a tolerance zone located a few meters before the middle field line. However, after their own middle field the player is allowed to use this combination. Unfair Play 1. Use of any non-approved third party program. 2. Intentional disconnection 3. Use of any illegal settings 4. Use of any game exploits It is at the discretion of the referee, during a match, to determine what actions are unfair play. Upon discovery of any player committing any violations regarded as unfair play, that player will be penalized. Penalties may consist of but are not restricted to, warnings, yellow cards, or disqualification. Two yellow cards will result in disqualification. These rules are for CGS and are subject to modification at the discretion of CGS. Such modifications include but are not restricted to: Use of most recent patch. In-game setting changes or restrictions needed by use of the most recent patch. Cheat protection programs.

EnriquePerez ITUGameTheory SoccercomputergamescomefromTV ThispaperconsistsofacomparisonofthegamesProEvolutionSoccer06andFIFA07.Specifically, IanalyzehowaplaysessionofeachtitleresemblesafootballmatchpresentedonTV,whatleads tothinkthatinsteadofsimulatingthesportitself,thefootballcomputergamestendtosimulate theTVmediatedpresentationoffootball. Iwouldliketostartoffbydepictingagamesessionofbothgames.Iundertookaplaysession tryingtohavesimilarconditionssothatthecomparisoncouldbebetter.IplayedFIFA07asthe MexicanteamcalledClubAmericaagainsttheDanishteamAalborgBKrepresentedbythe computer.DuringmyPES06session,IplayedtheMexicanNationalteamagainsttheDanishone. Generally,bothProEvolutionSoccer06andFIFA07havethesamefloworstructurewhilegoing throughaplaysession.Ichoosemyteam,seethelogosandgraphicsabouttheskillsandstrengths oftheteams,setupmylineupandgotothestadiumtostarttheaction.Thegamestransportme tothematchwithdifferentimagesoftheplayers,fromthegoingoutofthedressingrooms,and breakinglines,totheirpositioningandwaitingforthewhistletokicktheball. AsforthepresentationofthesportasseenonTV,IfoundthatProEvolutionSoccer6andFIFA07 havemanysimilaritiesandaveryfewdiscrepancies.Inthesensethatthetermpresentationis usedbyKayaliandPurgathofer(Kayali&Purgathofer,2008)asvisualsandastheplayerslooks andactions,Icanmentionthatinbothgameseverythingisportrayedinveryclosewaytoreality, theplayersareidentifiablewithrealfootballplayers,thestadiumsarereplicasoftherealvenues andeventhefieldsfeaturesomedetrimentstandingoutfortheirrealism.IrememberI identifiedmanyoftheMexicanplayersrepresentedinbothgames.Moreover,inbothgamesthe wholeenvironmentsresembleverypopularplaces,thereisalotofpeople,advertisements, flashes,etc. Nevertheless,whatgoesawayfromtheTVremediationandinwhichbothtitlesdifferarethe preparationsforeachplaysession,thegraphicsandproceduralstepsagamerhastoperformin ordertostartplaying.Choosingateam,alineup,auniformandthevenueareproceduresthat denotethatthethingthatisgoingonismerelyacomputergameandnotabroadcastedfootball encounter. ProEvolutionSoccer6featuresaspreparationstepsforaplaysessionthegraphicalchoosingofa continent,thenchoosingateamwiththevisualizationoftheirskillsbasedonadiagramthat

matchesapentagram.Thencomesselectingthestadiumandthesidethegamerisplayingbefore thegamestarts. ThevisualstructureofTVmatchesarealsofollowedinthecomputergameswiththeuseof replaysafteragoal,thecommentedhighlightsorsummaryoftheplaysinthemiddleandatthe endoftheplaysession,andthefactthatthewholesituationfollowsatimecontrolrepresented graphicallyinacornerofthescreen.Icoulddescribethewholewaythataplaysessiondevelops asarecreationofhappeningsataTVmatch:thecamerashots,theemotions,theatmospheric sounds,thecloseshotstoaccentuateoremphasizethereactionsoftheplayers,etc. TheenvironmentofaplaysessionconstitutesinbothProEvolutionSoccer6andFIFA07a representationofthesoccerworldthroughsymbolicmeansproperoftheTVmedium.AsIhave describedinthispaper,duetothedifferentviewsthatthegamergetsduringaplaysessionofthe soccergames,itispossibletoidentifyemotions,detailsandevenfollowthewholedevelopment ofthesituation.Besides,manygraphicelementsandsymbolsthatarerepresentedandused exactlyastheyappearonTVduringaTVmatch.

ProEvolutionSoccer6andFIFA07recreateintheirgameplaythevisionoffootballasitiscreated on/byTV.Therearejustafewdetailsinwhichitispossibletorememberduringaplaysessionthat thewholethingisagameandnotamatch,suchasthepreparationsteps.Aftertheanalysis undertakeninthispaperithasbeenseenthatbothgamesarestronglyremediatingtelevisionto createthewaygamersexperienceinteractivelyfootball.Thereisonlyaveryfewdetailsthatdiffer fromonetitletoanotheronthisTVrecreationbutbasicallybothgamesarethesameontheirTV basedcopyingnature.
