SCRABBLE Rules A Summary

Object
Be the player with the highest final score.
The Basic Rules of the SCRABBLE Game
Players form interlocking words, crossword fashion, on the board using letter tiles of varying values. Each player competes for high score by taking
advantage of the letter values, as well as the values of the premium squares on the board. Player 1 always goes first. Each player starts with seven letter tiles in his or her letter rack. Player 1 combines two or more letter tiles to form a word and places it on the board to read either across or down. One of the letters must be placed on the center <star> square. On subsequent turns, each player adds one or more letters to those already played to form new words. All letters played in a turn must be placed in one row either across or down to form one complete word. All words must have at least two letters. If the letters played touch other letters in adjacent rows, they must form complete words, crosswise fashion, with these letters. The player gets full credit for all words formed or modified on their turn. A player completes a turn by adding together the letter values of all new words formed on that turn. The player then draws as many new letter tiles as those played, thereby always keeping seven letter tiles in his/her letter rack. Either of the two blank tiles may be used as any letter. Once a player states which letter the blank tile represents, it remains that letter for the rest of the game. A player may use a turn to exchange some or all of the tiles in his or her tile rack, provided there are at least seven tiles left to draw. The player draws as many new letter tiles as are returned to the pool. This ends the turn.
All words, including those of foreign origin, as well as obsolete, colloquial, or slang words are permitted. Words that are not permitted include those that are always capitalized, abbreviations, prefixes and suffixes used alone, and those requiring a hyphen or an apostrophe. A player may challenge his/her opponents last word (unless playing against Maven). If the word challenged is unacceptable, the challenged players tiles are automatically returned to his/her rack and he/she loses that turn. If the word challenged is acceptable, the challenger loses his/her next turn. Note: The Challenge Penalty option must be enabled in order for a player to lose his/her turn. The game ends when all letters have been drawn and one player uses his or her last letter; or when all possible plays have been made, or when each player scores zero points (by passing, exchanging or losing challenges) on three consecutive turns.

Quit Exit the program and return to the Windows desktop. Cancel Return to the Gameplay Screen. DEFINE LAST Define the last played word. From the Define Last window, complete the following steps: Click on the arrow to open a drop-down menu featuring all words previously played. Check the Show Every Turn box to bring up the Define Last window after every word is played on the board. Click DONE to close the box. EXCHANGE Click here if you would like to exchange the tiles in your rack. Then click on each tile you wish to exchange. The unwanted tile(s) will automatically be removed. Click DONE when you are finished selecting your unwanted tile(s). (If you change your mind, click CANCEL instead of DONE.) The Tile Tray will then appear. Select your new tiles by clicking on the ones you want, or clicking on AUTO PICK to have the program select your new tiles for you. PAUSE Pause the game. HINT Need help? Get a hint from Maven as to what the best play would be with the tiles currently in your rack. Hints will be given in progression, with each additional hint giving you more and more information. British Scrabble Championship Sponsored by PC Games Developer Joyboost
Also inside are a few facts on Joyboost's PC game, Spinword

Gameplay screenshot

Video game publisher, Joyboost, best known for Spinword, is said to be sponsoring the 2007 British Matchplay Scrabble Championship (BMSC), the UK's leading Scrabble competition, that takes place in Yarnfield, (near Stafford) between August 25th - 27th. This year's winner will automatically enter the 2007 World Scrabble Championships in Mumbai. Here's a piece of the original story: "The BMSC is the Association of British Scrabble Player's (ABSP) major annual competition. This year, as well the prestige championship trophy, the winner will also win an automatic entry to the 2007 World Scrabble Championships in Mumbai. As well as catering for regular tournament-goers in the marathon three-day event, there is also a special one-day tournament for newcomers on the 25th August."But why, out of all the video game publishers out there, is Joyboost the one sponsoring such an event? Well, Joyboost is not only contributing money to the Championship prize fund, but it's also giving free copies of Spinword to the winners of each section. And since we're on the topic.:Spinword is Joyboost's original new word creation game for the PC in which Players must use lettered tiles to create words of three or more letters as they float up from the bottom of the screen. The game allows players to build larger words out of smaller, simpler ones, challenging the player's vocabulary as well as their reflexes."We're thrilled to be sponsoring the British Matchplay Scrabble Championship," said Joyboost's Linda MacKellar. "One of the reasons Scrabble remains so popular is that every single game is different. The player's skill and word-power has a significant impact on how each game progresses. When we were designing Spinword, we wanted to capture the same elements. We think we've done that and we believe that Scrabble fans and gamers alike will find Spinword a game they can enjoy."Allan Simmons, the ABSP's sponsorship officer and coordinator of the BMSC, agrees, "Scrabble is timeless and continues to attract new fans every year. The BMSC is one of the most significant events in the UK with an estimated 14,000 games being played by around 200 players. We're very pleased to have Joyboost on board as a sponsor of this year's competition." Remember, the 2007 British Matchplay Scrabble Championship takes place in the Yarnfield Conference Centre, which this report insists that it's located "near Stafford." Want a piece of the action? Go on and register for the newcomers event right here!Joyboost has made available this site, claiming it's home of the FREE online version of Spinword. Why don't you try it out?
