One of Britains best known and popular event riders, last year Mary (49) was a member of the successful British team that won gold at the WEG in Lexington finishing in 6th place with Imperial Cavalier. She finished the year in second place in the World FEI rankings. She has twice won Badminton, is a four times Olympic team rider and winner of four British team gold medals and four-times British Champion during an eventing career of almost 25 years. Based near Sidmouth Devon, Mary became inspired to ride after a visit to Badminton. She first funded her career with supplementary jobs then became head girl to Sheila Wilcox fourtime winner of Badminton in the fifties. Mary made her Badminton debut in 1985 and just seven years later recorded her first win with the great King William who became the highest point earning horse in BE history. He lost the accolade last year to Spring Along. He was also the horse that gave Mary her first British team call-up in 1991 and the combination came home from Punchestown with a team gold medal and was ninth at the 1992 Olympic Games the following year. In a 2001 Mary broke her neck in a fall but was back in the saddle the following year to be third at Burghley (King Solomon). Mary is married to cattle dealer David King and the couple has two children; Emily (15) a keen eventer on the national junior A list and Freddie (12). Mary trains with international dressage trainer Ferdi Eilberg. Mary now breeds her own horses and last year rode the homebred mare Kings Temptress, by thoroughbred sire Primitive Rising, to seventh place at Burghley. Her dam Kings Mistress is also the dam of Badminton entry Kings Gem. Kings Temptress is the dam of the seven-yearold Everys King (by Jumbo son Mednight Mahout) currently competed by daughter Emily. Irish-bred Imperial Cavalier, by the Holstein sire Cavalier Royale is out of a mare by the Thoroughbred Imperius. He was acquired from Vicky Brake in 2007 and is owned by Eddie Davis owner of Bolton Wanderers Football club. Apache Sauce by the Thoroughbred Endoli was bred in Devon.
