In this assignment, I would like to discuss five different games which are Total Annihilation, Age of Empires, Red Alert, StarCraft, and Warcraft III. The game genre of those games is real time strategy which is one of my favorite types of game. I will discuss them by dividing them into four main fields: Artworks, Context, Game Mechanic, and Reward in the following paragraphs. In terms of artwork or visual design, Total Annihilation is not as famous as rest four games; however, it is the first real time strategy game that uses 3D technology, and its result is amazing. At that time, this is a pioneering work. In addition, from my point of view, the 3D performance of Warcraft III can be referred to as one of the best game nowadays. It is made by Blizzard Entertainment, a famous company that focuses on creating vivid graphics of a game. On the other hand, the artwork of Age of Empire, Red Alert, and StarCraft are 2D, due to the consideration of the making the operation of the game fluent. Although the visual designers did not use 3D technology in those games, they still tried their best to make their graphics attractive. Another important element of a game is context. The contexts of all real time strategy games are similar, namely, choosing a team or race and fighting against other teams or races. The difference is their time setting. The time of Total Annihilation and Red Alert is modern world so that their building, characters, weapon, all things are based on our life. Players thus feel more familiar with those games. The difference between these two games is that Red Alert also includes some scenarios that only happen in the movie. Age of Empires is talking about the story in Middle Ages; StarCraft, and Warcraft III are talking about the fantastic future. In these three games, many races can be chosen by players. All of those races have their cultures, features, and stories. For players, those choices bring them more fun. As to Game Mechanic, real time strategy games have some basic mechanics gathering resources, building the base, creating army, and defeating other opponents. But in Warcraft III, it also combines some features of RPG; that is, there are special heroes in this game. So, how to raise heros level and use them in the battle is a new challenge for the players. This kind of feature is in effect appeared in Red Alert. All soldiers level will be raised if the more enemy they killed. But in Warcraft III, only heroes are allowed to be
stronger after they get some special items, which let it be like RPG game. Therefore, the game mechanics of it should include training. On top of that, those games supplied an interesting function that people can create their own maps or weapons. Under such circumstances, the playing strategy needs to be changed as well. That makes the game mechanic more variety. Reward, in my view, is the most important factor of attracting players to play this game. Since real time strategy game is more complicated than others. Players have to try and learn some skills for the sake of defeating the opponents. From this process, players actually can get lots of fun, especially when they win the game via those skills they found or learned. That is an intrinsic reward. Besides that, real time strategy game usually allows players to play through internet. Thanks to this property, there are many real time strategy games are included in the game competitions. By being the winner of those competitions, players can not only be admired by other players, but they can also get some physical awards from the organization. Moreover, they may be the world champion if they are good enough. To sum up, those five games, Total Annihilation, Age of Empires, Red Alert, StarCraft, and Warcraft III, have their special features by which different players are enticed. However, the Magic Circle of those games I think is freedom that is not easily supplied by other games; in other words, less restriction and various possibilities are the common features for those games. That is why many people love to play real time strategy game.
