Overview:

I'm a passionate games developer that has been working in the games industry since 1997. My first two years I worked as an artist, and have been working as a programmer ever since, with over five years experience as a lead programmer. My experience with both makes me a better programmer, because I can better facilitate the needs of the creative people on my games. I'm in the industry because I want to develop games that I can be proud of. As much as I love programming and all it entails, my priority and sense of achievement always lies with the end result. My most recent experience has been as Lead Programmer of Ashes Cricket 2009, which was both a commercial and critical success, knocking off Wii Sports Resort to claim the #1 position in the UK and Australian charts. Unfortunately on the 21st of October 2009, Transmission Games went into liquidation after the disappointing performance of Heroes over Europe. Since then, I've increased my hours lecturing at Qantm College Melbourne, where I've been teaching all programming subjects for the last two years.

Its a great game that I would implore any cricket fan to go out and get.
I was the Lead Programmer of Ashes Cricket 2009, which was a reboot of the Brian Lara franchise for next-gen. I saw the project through from its very inception until completion and I was responsible for a team of programmers that varied in size over the course of production, averaging 10-15 programmers. I was responsible for the technology of the entire project, it's architecture as well as managing the programming team. Ashes Cricket 2009 became a commercial and critical success, toppling Wii Sports Resort to became the first GfK Chart Track #1 title for a UK publisher in over two years. (see: http://www.mcvuk.com/news/35326/UK-CHARTS-Ashes-bowls-to-the-top ) Project: Jackass: The Game Platforms: Sony PS2, (C++) Role: Senior Programmer While working on Heroes of the Pacific PSP, our publisher Red Mile Entertainment asked us to assist to help Sidhe Interactive complete Jackass: The Game for PS2.

Myself and a few others from Transmission Games worked with Sidhe Interactive for four months, as part of the team helping to gain concept approval for the PlayStation 2 version. I lead the programmers from Transmission Games while working with their developers. We added PS2 specific features, such as widescreen support, light bloom and depth of field, a slow motion bailout feature and some PS2 specific game modes. Project: Heroes of the Pacific Platforms: Sony PSP, (C++) Role: Lead Programmer My first role at Transmission Games was to bring the successful aerial combat game Heroes of the Pacific to the PSP. The project was quite challenging, because the original title pushed the PS2 quite hard. We managed to get the PSP looking remarkably similar to the PS2 version and running at 30hz by employing a number of techniques; including writing a PSP command list compiler that would load PSP command lists in-place and remap its pointers for fast load times. I used this to create a custom terrain renderer that took advantage of the not-quite by nearly static environments, by patching and modifying the command lists only when terrain objects were damaged. In addition to this, I used the bounding box tests available on the PSP GPU so that our terrain rendering would occur in a single CallList() call, which relieved us of a huge amount of CPU burden. In addition to this we implemented a pseudo-normal mapping technique for the water and implemented an effective Level of Detail system for the AI. 2003 2005: Lead Programmer, Tantalus Interactive, Melbourne. In my role as a lead programmer for Tantalus, not only did I work as a lead programmer on two titles, but I had also been instrumental in transitioning the company from primarily using internal tools to using Maya for the core of their production, which boosted productivity and helped move the company forward. Project: SpongeBob SquarePants: The Yellow Avenger Platforms: Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, (C++) Role: Lead Programmer SpongeBob SquarePants The Yellow Avenger was Tantalus Interactive's first original title for both the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP. The game features a wide variety of game play elements, combining outdoor action elements with quest based indoor elements that make heavy use of the unique features of the DS. The game was delivered on time for the DS and is scheduled to do the same shortly for the PSP. I developed the art exporter for Maya using the Maya API, the SpongeBob level editor for Maya in MEL, and most of the major systems for the game, including the physics (which consisted of a combination of soft & rigid body dynamics with stackable objects) and the core of the game's engine in addition to a lot of the application code. For the rendering engine we utilized Mercury, which is the company's internal engine. The team was quite a large, expanding to six full time programmers in addition to the large team of artists and designers. Project: The Polar Express (THQ Australia) Platform: Gameboy Advance, (C++) Role: Lead Programmer

Based on the 2004 Robert Zemekis film, The Polar Express consisted of a wide variety of levels, including traditional 2D platforming, fixed scrolling action levels and 3D action levels that combined real time 3D sprites with pseudo-3D backgrounds. The title was developed on time for the release of The Polar Express movie for Christmas 2004. I also developed a system to stream the background charsets to achieve higher detail than would otherwise be possible on the GBA and ported a JPEG decoder so we could include over 100 images from the feature film and ship the product on a 4 megabyte cartridge. 2003: Programmer, IR Gurus Interactive. Project: AFL Live 2004 (Acclaim Entertainment Australia) Platforms: Playstation 2, Xbox, PC. (C++) Project: The Saddle Club (Infogrames) Platforms: PC (C++) 2002: Programmer, Indeva Studios. Project: Gameboy Advance Animation Editor & Game Engine Platform: Windows Forms,.NET, (C#) I developed an engine and tools suite for the Gameboy Advance with a scene/animation windows editor that allows artists to create entire scenes for levels, with creature and background instancing and key framing with parenting. It also features a scripting engine and dynamic resource management. My intention was to create a system so that feature rich game content can be developed rapidly. The engine has been developed in GNU C and the tools have been written in C# using the Windows Forms API in Visual Studio.NET. 2000-2002: Senior Programmer, Crawfish Interactive, UK. Project: Tilefish (Crawfish's internal level editor) Platform: Win32, (C++) During my time at Crawfish Interactive I developed in house tools for map editing and conversion of art assets for use in Gameboy Advance games using and combination of C and C++ and the Win32 API. The tools were used in several projects, including Driven by BAM interactive and Freestyle Scooter by Crave. Project: Superman: Shadow of the Apokolips Platform: Gameboy Advance, (C) I was the lead programmer on Superman for Gameboy Advance, which was an isometric action game that was written in C and assembly that allowed the player full freedom using all of Supermans abilities. The game featured scripted sequences, many AI characters and unique boss battles. The game featured: Isometric engine Vast worlds with large maps using meta-tiles. Over 14,000 frames of animation requiring a custom compression system. Dynamic management of GBA sprite and memory resources Dynamic creature management to allow dozens of active creatures Scripting of the camera, creatures and effects using a virtual machine and a macro-based scripting language.

2000: Indeva Studios. Project: Hip Hop City Platform: Gameboy Color, Z80 Assembly Using both my programming and art skills, I developed a demo for a break dancing game called Hip Hop City with the intention of having it published. I created everything from the design, to the art and programming. My goal was to create a visually impressive game that was approached in a fighting game style, so the players could control the characters dance moves. The game featured high-color mode graphics and 3D rendered sprites that were using sprite overlays and multiplexing to enable 12 colors for each player character. I animated and rendered the character artwork using Lightwave and Maya. I wrote command line tools in C to cut up the 3d rendered character artwork into sprite segments. The game code itself was written entirely in Z80 assembly. 1997 2000, Tantalus Interactive, Melbourne South Park Rally PSX, N64, PC (Senior Artist) House of the Dead Sega Saturn (Artist) Dethkarz N64 (Artist) I began my games career as an artist at Tantalus working on both conversions and original titles. Most often I used Lightwave 3D, Photoshop and a number of in house tools. I gained a wide range of knowledge during my time at Tantalus, creating and animating backgrounds and characters for multiple platforms including PlayStation, N64, Sega Saturn and PC.

I studied for this course from 2003 to 2006 while working full time in the games industry as a lead programmer for most of the duration of my course. Naturally it was quite a challenge balancing demands between work and study. As a result, my marks were lower in the later stages of the course due to my increased work requirements, and especially in the last semester, where I was working long hours in New Zealand while studying, and had to fly to Melbourne for my exams. Awards: 2004: Oracle Industry Award for Academic Excellence in the course Introduction to Database Systems. 1997, VCE Whitttlesea Secondary College. My main subjects were Maths, Physics, Information Systems and Chemistry. Achieving particularly high marks in Information Systems (Dbase and Pascal programming), I was accepted at Swinburne University to study Computer Science and Software Engineering in 1998, but before starting University I was offered a full-time job at Tantalus Interactive. Because my ambition was to work in the games industry, I decided to stay at Tantalus.
