GETTING STARTED > GETTING SATELLITE SIGNALS

GETTING STARTED

This section provides an overview of your iQue 3600a and instructions on how to set up your iQue.

To acquire GPS signals:

Getting Satellite Signals
The GPS receiver must be turned on and initialized (given an opportunity to determine its location) before you can use it for navigation. The rst time you use the GPS receiver on your iQue 3600a, you will need to initialize it, which can take up to 15 minutes. You can shorten the initialization time by selecting your general location on the map. See Establishing a New Location on page 66. After you nd your location the rst time, the receiver takes less time to gather signals.
NOTE: The antenna is designed to best receive satellite signals when it is aligned parallel with the horizon. If the antenna is positioned vertically, the iQues ability to receive satellites may be dramatically reduced.
1. Rotate the antenna so that it is parallel with the horizon. This is the On position. 2. Have a clear view of the sky to receive satellite signals. Satellite signals cannot pass through solid materials (except glass) or dense overhead tree cover.

NRST (NEAREST)opens the QueFind page so you can nd the nearest aviation points. MENUopens the menu along the top of the screen. Press again to close that menu. ESC (ESCAPE)exits options menus, applications, or pages (screens). When you are panning the map, press ESCAPE to center the map on your current location. ENT (ENTER)enters information and marks a waypoint when QueMap is open. Rocker Keyhighlights an item on the screen and pans across the map. The Aviation Cradle provides additional keys to allow you to quickly access integral functions of the iQue 3600a. Open the antenna before placing the iQue 3600a into the Aviation Cradle. Also, be sure the leather ip cover is removed, as described on page 7, before installing the iQue 3600a in the Aviation Cradle.

ADVANCED AVIATION OPERATION > UNDERSTANDING VECTORS

Understanding Vectors

The Vectors window that appears at the last step of selecting an approach determines how you will navigate to the nal waypoint in the approach.
If you select No on the Vectors window, the iQue 3600a creates a straight-line course directly to the rst waypoint in the approach (from wherever you are when you initiate the approach). This works much like any other route with guidance from point-to-point and a turn usually required as you cross each waypoint.
NOTE: Steep Turns are not allowed on an IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) approach. Follow plate or air trafc control instructions to complete the approach without a steep turn.
If you select Yes, the iQue 3600a creates an extension of the nal course beyond the nal approach waypoint in the database, called the nal approach x (FAF). The iQue 3600a provides no guidance to the inbound course. The course deviation needle on the graphic HSI remains off-center until you are established on this nal approach course. QueMap displays an extension of the nal approach course using a bold magenta line. The HSI automatically slews (rotates to show the direction) to the inbound course. On the Active Route (or Active Approach) page, a Vector to Final symbol appears adjacent to the rst approach waypoint.
If air trafc controls clears your approach to an airport, loading the approach replaces your Direct To with a route to the FAF. Load the approach only when cleared by air trafc control.

Introduction FCC Compliance Information
The iQue 3600 does not contain any user-serviceable parts. Repairs should only be made by an authorized Garmin service center. Unauthorized repairs or modifications could result in permanent damage to the equipment, and void your warranty and your authority to operate this device under Part 15 regulations. The iQue 3600 complies with Part 15 of the FCC interference limits for Class B digital devices FOR HOME OR OFFICE USE. These limits are designed to provide more reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation, and are more stringent than outdoor requirements. Operation of this device is subject to the following conditions: (1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one of the following measures: Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna. Increase the separation between the equipment and the receiver. Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected. Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help.

CAUTION: Use the iQue 3600 at your own risk. To reduce the risk of unsafe operation, carefully review and understand all aspects of this Owners Manualand thoroughly practice operation using the simulator mode prior to actual use. When in actual use, carefully compare indications from the iQue 3600 to all available navigation sources, including the information from other NAVAIDs, visual sightings, charts, etc. For safety, always resolve any discrepancies before continuing navigation. CAUTION: It is the users responsibility to use this product prudently. This product is intended to be used only as a navigational aid and must not be used for any purpose requiring precise measurement of direction, distance, location or topography. This product should not be used as an aid to determine ground proximity for aircraft navigation. CAUTION: The electronic chart is an aid to navigation and is designed to facilitate the use of authorized government charts, not replace them. Only official government charts and notices to mariners contain all information needed for safe navigation and, as always, the user is responsible for their prudent use. MAP DATA INFORMATION: One of the goals of Garmin is to provide customers with the most complete and accurate cartography that is available to us at a reasonable cost. We use a combination of governmental and private data sources, which we identify as required in product literature and copyright messages displayed to the consumer. Virtually all data sources contain inaccurate or incomplete data to some degree. This is particularly true outside the United States, where complete and accurate digital data is either not available or prohibitively expensive.

GPS Applications Initializing the GPS Receiver
Initializing the Receiver The GPS Receiver must be initialized (given an opportunity to determine its location) before you can begin using it for navigation. Before it can receive signals from GPS satellites overhead, you must turn the receiver on. This can be accomplished by deploying the antenna on the back of the iQue handheld by rotating it up to a horizontal position (parallel with the horizon). In order to receive satellite signals, you must have a clear view of the sky. Satellite signals cannot pass through solid materials (except glass) or dense overhead tree cover. When the unit initializes for the first time it may take as long as 15 minutes. This time can be shortened by using the map to point to the general area in which you are currently located (see page 6). Anytime you have traveled more than 600 miles with the GPS receiver turned off, the iQue handheld must again find its location by reinitializing. Using QueGPS QueGPS is an information type application that displays the current status of satellite reception by showing the location and numbers of the satellites in the sky overhead. A signal strength bar at the bottom of the page shows the signal strength of each satellite being received. Use QueGPS to: Observe the status of GPS satellite signal reception. View the current date and time. Determine your current location coordinates and their accuracy. Determine your current speed. Determine your approximate elevation (altitude above mean sea level).

Best signal reception can be attained when positioning the antenna horizontally (parallel with the horizon).
