Using Traffic Information
Your nvi can receive FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) traffic or MSN Direct traffic content, depending upon the traffic receiver connected to your nvi. Your nvi displays both types of traffic content in the same manner.
Note: Garmin is not responsible for the accuracy of the traffic information.
The FM TMC subscription activates automatically after your Garmin GPS device acquires satellite signals while receiving traffic signals from the service provider. You can add other FM TMC subscriptions at any time. Check the Garmin Web site at www.garmin.com /fmtraffic for other available services.
Understanding MSN Direct Traffic
Understanding FM TMC Traffic
The MSN Direct receiver, which is integrated in the power cable, is included in the nvi 785 packages. MSN Direct receivers receive MSN Direct content, including traffic information. For information about activating MSN Direct service or using MSN Direct, refer to the nvi 785 Quick Start Manual and the MSN Direct Owners Manual Supplement at www.garmin.com.
The FM TMC traffic receiver, which is integrated in the power cable, is included in some nvi 755, 765, and 775 packages. FM TMC traffic receivers receive traffic information that is broadcast over the FM Radio Data System.
For information about traffic receivers and coverage areas, go to www.garmin.com/traffic.

Traffic in Your Area

Receiving Traffic Information
To receive traffic information, the following conditions must be met: The traffic receiver must be connected to the nvi. The traffic receiver and nvi must be connected to an external power source. The traffic receiver and nvi must be in data range of an FM station transmitting traffic information.
Note: Heated (metallized) windshields could degrade the performance of the traffic receiver.
When you are receiving traffic information, a traffic icon appears in the upper-left corner of the Map page. The traffic icon changes color to indicate the severity of traffic conditions on your route or the road you are currently travelling.

Severity Color Code

Color Green Yellow Red Description Low severity Medium severity High severity Meaning Traffic is flowing normally. Traffic is slightly congested. Traffic is heavily congested or stopped.

Traffic on Your Route

When calculating your route, the nvi examines the current traffic and automatically optimizes the route for the shortest time. If a severe traffic delay occurs on your route while you are navigating, the nvi automatically recalculates the route. You might still be routed through traffic if no better alternative routes exist. If a non-severe traffic delay occurs on your route, the traffic icon shows how much time the delay has added to your route. This time is already included in your estimated arrival time.

To manually avoid traffic on your route: 1. On the Map page, touch the traffic icon. 2. Touch Traffic On Route. 3. Touch the arrows to view other traffic delays on your route, if necessary. 4. Touch Avoid to avoid the traffic delay.

Playing Audio Through Your Vehicle Speakers
Check local laws before using the FM transmitter in your area. Use of FM transmitters is currently illegal in certain European countries due to specific radio frequency restrictions. See page 59 for more information.
1. From the Menu page, touch Volume > Audio Output > FM Transmitter > OK > Auto Tune. 2. Tune your stereo to the selected channel.
Manually Tuning the FM Transmitter
If an FM transmitter is available on your nvi, you can listen to the nvi audio on an FM stereo.
Note: When using the FM transmitter function on the nvi, hands-free phone calls through the nvi might be overheard by adjacent vehicles through the FM stereo.

If you are not using an FM traffic receiver or you are using an MSN Direct receiver, select an FM channel for the FM transmitter.
1. From the Menu page, touch Volume > Audio Output > FM Transmitter > OK. 2. Tune your stereo to an FM channel that has a lot of static and has a low FM frequency number. 3. Touch the Current FM Frequency button. 4. Touch and to select the same frequency to which your stereo is tuned.
Auto Tuning the FM Transmitter
If you are using an FM traffic receiver, the nvi can select a channel for you.

Frequency Selection Tips

For best results, select a frequency below 90.1 FM. When searching for an appropriate FM frequency on your FM stereo, look for an unused frequency that has steady, consistent static. If you hear slight noises and sounds in the background of the static, select a different frequency. As you travel, you might need to change the frequency for the FM transmitter. A frequency not used by a radio station in your area might be used by a station elsewhere.
The distance between the vehicle power cable, the nvi, and the FM stereo antenna may also affect the noise level. Vehicles with antennas located far away, such as a rear-mounted antenna, may experience more interference from outside noise sources than vehicles with front-mounted antennas. As you drive, you may notice changes in the background static even though there is no FM station using that channel. You may notice this as you drive through intersections where certain kinds of traffic lights or other municipal electronic systems are operating. You might also notice this effect when the terrain changes, allowing distant stations to be received by your car stereo that were not received when you made your initial frequency selection. These and other sources of electrical interference may make it necessary to look for another frequency.
FM Transmitter Information
The FM transmitter is intended to transmit the audio from the nvi to your FM stereo. Do not adjust your FM settings while you are driving your vehicle.

Your nvi alerts you when you are approaching a safety camera and can warn you if you are driving too fast. The data is updated at least weekly, so you always have access to the most up-to-date information. You can purchase a new region or extend an existing subscription at any time. Each region that you purchase has its own expiration date.
Caution: Garmin is not responsible for the accuracy of, or the consequences of using, a custom POI or safety camera database.
Extras and Optional Accessories
