Bought 2 of these - one for a netbook and 1 for an external enclosure. Unlike the old Hitachi hd in my netbook. Nice terabyte HDD Using this as shared storage for movies and pictures and what not on my home network.

I bought this 1.5 TB external hard drive to store my home video collection because I know my mini-DV tapes will degrade over time. I must pull the power plug because the 2nd unit also had a defective power switch. Easy To Install Instructions assume

Well, ordered this drive before Christmas, received it in an orderly manner which was nice. I purchased up one of these drives at a store and installed it in a Mac Powerbook. I was able to install the OS. SO FAR I HAD THIS HARD DRIVE FOR ABOUT A WEEK AND IT IS RUNNING LIKE A CHAMP.

Fast as lightning. All the hoopla out there, the only drives at this point in time to own. Been using Western Digital for over 20 years. I use this new hard drive purely for media. I was debating whether I should get this or the green 2TB from WD.

Had a laptop drive that the OS had crashed multiple times and was only 80GB. Replaced it with this drive and have ran it for about 3 weeks now. Very good external hard drive. I am very pleased with this unit so far.

ADAM RAYNER DELVES INTO THE FIRST RELEASE OF THE ALL-NEW REL STRATA 5 AND FINDS IT HAS HIDDEN LAYERS
he real reason for loving bass reproducers is how the good ones can make you feel. Transparency
and the mains. And thats it. The back of some RELs have input level controls for Neutrik Speakon high-level connection as well as one for the RCA LFE feed socket, as well as a matrix control for input selection and other stuff. The Strata 5 has all this and more but all controlled via either a brilliant yet small remote control or a single rotary encoder on the front and displayed on a very smart small display in sexy blue LEDs next to it. Before we go on, let me tell you properly about how it sounded once the test disc of the moment, Finding Nemo, had been spun up again. Simply

RATINGS

Highs: Handsome and very solid. Very good sound and tremendous control from what is the first fully remote controllable subwoofer for all parameters yet developed Lows: All we can think of is the aversion to adding yet one more remote to your world. None otherwise.

and clarity with dynamism is crucial, but the real hairs-standing-up all over experience seems to dangle more from the low end. Able to evoke emotion and feelings, as well as swell richly until you can feel the sound in your chest, the REL Strata 5 is an absolute state-of-the-art piece of kit, that has been in development for around two years. The result is as elegantly obvious as to seem simple, which is why it represents a major step forwards.
Open and sweet, control of the stupendous driver is sublime

MOTOR HOME

The box is a dense upright oblate that sits on feet to keep the 10in driver away from the floor. Made of whacking 30mm thick MDF, with veneer on both sides of beautiful. Rich and full, especially once the high level Speakon had been appended to the back of my main left and right channel speaker leads. On high level input, you get all the bass that is in the original sound laid down but sometimes missed by the down mixer at final process. There are plenty of examples of bass missing from the
0.1 channel that can be heard again once this lead is connected. The first flight over the reef with Mr. Ray was just luscious. Open and sweet, the control of the stupendous driver is sublime. The ABC or Active Bass Controller circuit can be heard if you set the thing at hooligan levels, but it will still cleverly avoid damaging itself. It can take a bit of setting up, but once done, the result is superb. Its almost hard to credit how well this small box breathes deeply down into the 15Hz zone, chewing up Mars by Holst on Telarc and doing the old shake-the-foundations routine. It

HCC Practical Tip

By providing the point one or LFE channel in a 5.1 soundtrack, the subwoofer has a crucial role to play in home cinema. Subs can reach much lower frequencies than full range loudspeakers (hence the name) and they also take the strain off the rest of the speaker package by handling all of the frequencies below a certain crossover point. Modern directors and sound engineers make use of the LFE channel to create ambient effects and add weight to gunshots and explosions. With this in mind, its well worth investing some of your budget in a decent model, like the REL Strata 5 for example, in order to get the full home cinema experience.
the material, it weighs 17.5 kilos, of which a serious chunk is taken up by the high quality amp and circuit board, as well as a drive unit not ever meant for home use. This consists of a simply absurd magnet, massive paper cone, huge surround and tough dust dome, to the point where only a narrow strip of cone itself shows between suspension and dome. This was made for use in cars. So we have a straightforward sealed box with madness-derived speaker and potent amplifier but what of that major step? The panel at the back looks almost like medical equipment. Plain and silvery, with two input sockets, a trigger jack-hole

isnt as loud down there as the 2,500 model but two of these at 800 each would stomp that and save you 900! within so as to avoid any digital noise. Push the knob to scroll through the menu and rotate to adjust. You get 0-180 phase, you get separate level controls for each high and low level input, you get to fix the crossover frequency and choose to have up to 9dB + or at 80Hz, labelled slam/depth control. You can mute the LFE feed and even set the display brightness, time out and DC trigger levels from the front panel. With the remote you can set a parental control mode to lock the front panel and program up to four separate memories for your fave settings, like movies full-on, movies-evening, music 2 channel and music 5.1 channel as one, two, three and four. It looks very sexy and bang up-to-date. The high tech panel can sit in a box of Cherry, Walnut, Rose Nut, Maple, Light Oak and Black Ash veneers. A real slice of bass-master R&D; meet the future of subwoofer design I

THE RIGHT RESULTS

The classic proper sub-bass result, where your main speaker system becomes lighter, richer and more airy somehow is even more in effect when you hook up the speaker level input as well as the RCA one. A forbidden blow-me-up manoeuvre with some other subs, this is the thing to do with a REL. If you own one and havent bothered to connect that odd bulky Neutrik plug, then do it. It works with knobs on. Now for the control. The front panel is a tiny 0.5mm proud of the veneer surface so that any wiped cloth will not catch splinters and damage the finish (thoughtful, like the rest of the design) and bears said rotary encoder and a blue LED display. The encoder is a digital device but it controls analogue circuits

When DTV meets VHS

THE CHEAP AS CHIPS DAEWOO SV900 IS THE FIRST VCR TO COME WITH A DIGITAL TERRESTRIAL TUNER. GUY COCKER SUPS ON THIS COCKTAIL OF OLD AND NEW
ouve got to give the humble VCR credit. Despite the number of digital recording options
for anyone with a receiver or simple home theatre system. If you do so, this is where the Digital Radio services come in handy, with the audio output from the SV900 proving to be fairly admirable (even though an optical audio output would retain the full quality). Many people will have read about the furore over low quality DAB broadcast standards recently, but all channels broadcast on Freeview are clear and well encoded. The SV900 EPG rounds off the package, with a clear, unpretentious display taking up a quarter of the screen with Now and Next information.
it will offer an over-the-air download when the extended EPG is rolled-out though. Like most of the current Freeview hardware available, theres no Common Interface (CI) slot. This is only significant if you are keen to access the newly-launched digital terrestrial subscription service, TopUpTV (which for most is unlikely). Unlike some of the cheaper Freeview boxes, you can also route the digital output through on an RF channel. Useful if you either a) dont have a Scart in/out or b) want to funnel it into an RF signal distribution system. As far as VCR
growing almost daily, the analogue tape format finds ingenious new ways to court our affections. Weve had combination VCR/DVDs players, combi VCR/HDD players and now the first combined Freeview digital TV tuner/VHS recorder has arrived, courtesy of Korean manufacturer Daewoo. With many of us still navigating piles of VHS tapes somewhere in the house, can the combination of Freeview and VCR be enough to dissuade people from investing in an all-digital solution?

SAME OLD SAME OLD

Obviously, the digital tuner update isnt going to change the physical dimensions of this VCR. The mechanical nature of the tape transport will make sure of that. Hence, the unit looks exactly the same as a regular VCR, with only a few logos across the tape slot making the Freeview embellishment obvious. To the right is a jog shuttle control to allow various speed tape rewind and fast-forward, with Play, Stop and Eject located close by. Theres also hidden front phono AV inputs and a rear-side Scart (RGB output from the Freeview tuner enabled). To start with the Freeview tuner, the unit offers no unpleasant surprises. Sound and vision quality is comparable
A fine Freeview receiver, its ability to play back legacy tapes is not to be sniffed at
Interactive services, such as BBCi and Teletext, are a joy to use, loading quickly and navigating easily with the remote control. The cache used to store these pages is relatively large, as the change and loading between screens is never prolonged. Like all Freeview recorders, basic functionality continues to be hampered by the non-appearance of the 7-day EPG information outside of London. The company has confirmed that functionality goes, the SV900 is fairly standard. The unit supports Videoplus and theres also an 8 event/1 month timer. Tape navigation is basic compared to PVRs and DVD-recorders, but to ease matters theres a progress bar displayed when youve made a recording, and the Go To option is handy when skipping through for a specific programme. Picture-quality is obviously restricted by the limitations of VHS. But for those

with stand alone tuners. Skin tones appear natural, with the usual blocky artefacts on the lower bit-rate channels being entirely the fault of broadcasters. The setup is quick and easy, when channels are ordered correctly, and if you want a favourites list then its a simple affair to set up. The sound can also be routed out via a pair of phonos handy

about video and audio quality will have banished memories of Long Play a while ago, but theoretically it gives you 6 hours of recording on one tape. If you can put up with its technological shortcomings as a whole, the Daewoo is more than willing to work for your affections. One nicety is the ability to skip exactly 30 seconds of recordings (press 4-6 times to skip your average ad break). Even though the recording technology is old, there are modes for displaying in true widescreen for supported programmes, or 4:3 fullscreen/letterbox. The VCR is a six-head model that will play NTSC recordings.

who have been time-shifting ghosted analogue reception for years, at least it looks clean. The main sacrifice is in detail, as if the screen has been given a sheen of Vaseline. The recording options are comprehensive, with the ability to record programmes with subtitles, turn MHEG support on or off (eradicating the cursed red button in every corner). Theres also a setting for the machine to automatically record in Long Play if there isnt enough tape left at standard mode. Obviously, anyone caring at all

CONCLUSION

Whilst many home cinema aficionados will have long-binned the analogue recording solution, Daewoos SV-900 works fine as a Freeview receiver, and its ability to play back legacy tapes is not to be sniffed at. Should you have any family who have yet to experience the benefits of digital television, point them in the direction of the Daewoo SV900, and inexpensive, quality viewing and recording will be theirs I
