Harman Kardon Guide + PlayTM Navigation Device
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
General
Is there a detailed owners manual available? Yes, a complete owners manual can be downloaded at www.guideandplay.eu. The GPS unit does not start. If your GPS doesnt start, check if you charged the battery for at least 10 hours with the included wall charger. Next check if the Lock/Unlock switch on the left side of your GPS is in the Unlock position. Finally, reset your device. The Reset knob is on the bottom of the GPS. You can reset the device by inserting a paper clip into the Reset hole. The GPS unit is unresponsive. If your GPS is unresponsive, check if the Lock/Unlock switch on the left side of your GPS is in the Unlock position. Finally, reset your device. The Reset knob is on the bottom of the GPS. You can reset the device by inserting a paper clip into the Reset hole. A few days ago, I switched off the GPS with its battery fully charged. Now the battery is dead. GPS units other than the GPS-810/910 will always enter Standby mode when you switch them off. In Standby mode, the system status (e.g., active route, current music track) is maintained and the unit will start up much faster. However, there is still some power consumption, and the battery will slowly drain accordingly. The GPS-810/910 offers two modes. If you press the Power button quickly, the unit will enter Standby mode. If you press the Power button for a longer time, the system will enter Power Off mode and shut down completely for maximum battery conservation. Please note that the system status will not be saved in this case. Where on the windshield should I install the GPS unit? The GPS should be placed on your windshield in a position that does not block the view of the road and allows optimal usage of your device. Place the GPS at the lowest possible position on your windshield. Why do I have bad GPS reception? Some athermic heat-reflecting windshields block GPS signal reception inside the car. Such heat-reflecting windshields often have a hole behind the rearview mirror. Alternatively, you can use an external GPS antenna for better reception (available as an accessory). The GPS has to connect to at least four satellites to run properly. Why does it sometimes take my GPS a long time to find an accurate GPS position? If the position of the GPS has changed a lot since the last Power On status, it might take some time to get a GPS fix. Keeping the device powered off for a long time (e.g., more than one day) can cause the same behaviour, since satellites change their location in the sky over time. The mount does not stick properly to the windshield. Make sure the windshield glass and the suction cup of the mount are clean. Use the supplied alcohol pads for cleaning. Dont forget to remove the plastic film from the suction cup. Do I have to back up my device? The GPS navigation software and map data are permanently stored in the internal flash memory. There is no need for backups. How do I get my GPS repaired? Please contact the dealer where the product was purchased for assistance.
Can I change the battery in my GPS device? Please contact Harman Kardon customer support if you have any problems with the battery. The device uses a lithium-polymer battery that offers high battery performance. Please note that you can charge the battery in your car using the car power charger, or at home using the wall charger (not supplied with the GPS-200). Can I connect my GPS to the car stereo system? Yes, if you have an auxiliary (AUX) input in your car. On GPS units other than the GPS-810/910, plug the audio cable (standard 3,5mm plug) into the headphone socket of your GPS and connect it to the AUX input of your car stereo. On the GPS-810/910, plug the audio cable into the audio output jack on the mount (see the Quick-Start Guide, page 13). Can I apply individual volume settings for the different sources? Yes. Go to Volume Mixer in the Settings menu (GPS-810/910: Settings Audio Out) and adjust the levels as needed. FM audio transmission from the GPS-810/910 to my car stereo is very noisy. By law, the transmitting power of the built-in FM transmitter is limited to a low level. This is applicable for all FM transmitters that are legally available on the market. The purpose of this law is to prevent transmission of audio signals to other FM receivers near your car (e.g., the head unit in a car driving in front of you). Therefore, the quality of the FM audio transmission is highly dependent on the location and type of your cars FM antenna. The best results can be achieved with a classic bar antenna, which is located next to the front windshield. My device doesnt automatically switch between Day and Night mode. Harman Kardon GPS devices make use of a daylight notification, which is part of the GPS signal. Depending on the setting, the GPS device will automatically switch to Day or Night mode. Check if the Colour mode in the Settings menu is set to Auto. Can I toggle manually between Day and Night mode? If you want to manually switch to Day or Night mode, go to the Colour Mode settings and select the preferred option. My GPS-810/910 shows a video screensaver after a period of nonuse. This is an automatic screensaver that demonstrates the features of the GPS-810/910. You can disable the screensaver in Settings Demo Content Demo Video.
Remote Control Knob (GPS-810/910 only)
How do I pair the remote with the GPS unit? Hold the remote very close to the GPS unit. To enter Pairing mode, press the center, left and top button of the remote at the same time. A message will appear on the GPS screen asking you to continue pressing the center button on the remote. A few clicks later, you will be able to confirm the on-screen prompt with the center button of the controller. The message will disappear, and the controller will be paired with the GPS unit.
My remote is unresponsive, and I cannot get it paired with the GPS unit. The remote battery might be dead. Please twist off the remote controller counterclockwise. Remove the battery and replace it with a new standard CR2032/DL2032 battery. Depending on usage, battery life may exceed one year. I would like to use my GPS in two different cars. You can purchase an additional remote control as an accessory. Ask your local Harman Kardon dealer for a list of available accessories.
Navigation
How does GPS navigation work in general? The GPS calculates its position by dynamically measuring the distance between the car and four or more GPS satellites. Measuring the time delay between each of the received GPS signals allows for exact position evaluation. While entering an address, I miss some special characters like or. The GPS includes an intelligent address-input system with a built-in search engine. It will automatically list city or street names that are similar to the search text that has been entered. For example, you can use a normal e or o instead of the local special letters. Am I able to plan a route offline? The GPS is equipped with a simulation function. The starting point for a simulation is the latest acquired GPS position. My street and/or house number is not included in the map data. We always try to have the latest map data available from the Tele Atlas service. If you cant find the exact address, use the closest possible street/point. Report any map changes to Tele Atlas at www.teleatlas.com. Is it possible to expand the GPS map coverage to a larger area? Yes. The following map upgrades are available: Eastern Europe, All of Europe and North America. There is additional software available from third-party providers for portable navigation devices. How can I install it in the GPS? We dont recommend installing additional software in the GPS. This can lead to malfunction or even damage the device permanently. Adding or changing the original software in the GPS will void your warranty. My Navigation device never routes me to freeways/motorways. Go to the Avoidance menu in Navigation Settings and check if Avoiding Motorways is enabled. Please disable this option. Whats the purpose of the Shortest Route option in the Route Priority menu? This function will route you in the most direct way to your destination. This is not always the fastest route. You might also be routed to small side streets to keep the distance as short as possible (this can be useful in city centers). Outside of cities, we recommend using the Fastest Route option. The estimated time of arrival (ETA) changes frequently. The ETA is constantly recalculated, and incoming traffic (TMC) events are taken into account.
It seems that the route calculation of my GPS is slower than normal. A slow route calculation can be caused by the following: Your unit route priority is set to Shortest Route. This can slow down the calculation time, particularly on long-distance routes. If any traffic (TMC) messages are received during the calculation, the GPS will automatically recalculate the route. Is it possible to change the visibility of POI icons on the map? On the GPS-200/300/500, go to the Place (POI) screen, select the preferred POI category by pressing the button once, and click Show. If you click twice, you can continue searching for a special POI. On the GPS-410/510/810/910, go to Navigation Settings and press Map Icons. On the subsequent screens, you can enable/disable visibility of each of the listed POI categories. Why does the zoom scale change by itself on the map screen? There are two reasons: The GPS has an automatic junction-zoom feature. If you approach a turn, the map will zoom in to give you a more detailed idea of the turn situation. If you have more than 5km to the next turn, the GPS will switch to Helicopter mode to show you an overview of your route. It will automatically zoom in again if the next turn is closer than 5km. If I zoom in or out manually with the remote control knob of the GPS-810/910, the auto zoom no longer works. The remote control knob overrides the Auto Zoom feature. To reactivate default auto-zoom levels, simply exit the map view by pressing Menu; go back to the map view by pressing Map. This can also be done by pressing the left button on the control knob twice. Does the GPS support safety/speed camera warnings? The GPS has built-in software support for speed-camera warnings. Because of legal restrictions, there is no speed-camera data uploaded to the GPS unit and the feature is disabled by default. You can, however, obtain a subscription for regularly updated speedcamera data from a third-party Web site (www.speedcamupdate.com). You will also require an SD card (FAT32-formatted, not supplied with the GPS). After opening your account on www.speedcamupdate.com, download the POI-Warner software. Please install the POI-Warner software and follow the on-screen prompts. For proper installation of the speed-camera data on the GPS unit, first insert the SD card in the GPS. Next, connect the GPS to your Windows computer using the supplied USB cable. After installation, please disconnect your GPS from the computer and perform a reset. You will notice a slightly longer boot cycle the next time you power on the GPS. This is due to the GPS loading the speed-camera data from the SD card. Thereafter, the speed-camera data will remain in the GPS memory until you either reset the device or enter Power Off status (GPS-810/910 only). Entering Standby mode will not erase the speed-camera data. Important note: Speed cameras will only appear on the map after you have obtained a valid GPS position. In some countries (e.g., Switzerland), speed-camera warning is forbidden by law. The GPS will automatically disable the feature accordingly when entering these countries. Please note that this software is installed on a separate SD memory card inserted into the GPS unit without installing any files in the GPS unit itself. This software does not conflict with the warranty on the GPS unit. How do I activate the speed-camera warnings? After obtaining a valid GPS position, you can click on Safety/Speed Cameras on the Navigation Settings screen. You will be able to make adjustments for audible and visible warnings on the subsequent screens.
Traffic (TMC)
How does the Traffic Message Channel (TMC) feature work? TMC is a technology for delivering traffic and travel information via the RDS (radio data system) information of certain FM stations. Some GPS units offer built-in FM receivers that are able to receive and decode these TMC signals. Based on the incoming TMC events, the GPS is able to dynamically recalculate the route and guide you around traffic incidents. For installation of the supplied TMC antenna, please see the Quick-Start Guide. The GPS-810/910 has a TMC antenna built into the vehicle charger, while all other TMC-enabled products come with a separate TMC antenna. Please note that quality of TMC reception is highly dependent on general FM broadcast quality. It varies from location to location. Although there is heavy traffic being announced on the radio, I do not see any traffic events on my GPS unit. For GPS units other than GPS-810/910, please ensure that the TMC antenna cable is plugged into the GPS unit and properly positioned in the car (see the Quick-Start Guide, page 4). The GPS-810/910 works with an active TMC antenna that significantly improves reception quality. This antenna is integrated into the carcharger cable. For proper TMC reception, the car-charger cable needs to be connected to both the mount and the 12-volt cigarette-lighter plug. If the blue LED on the charger cable is lit, your GPS unit will be charged and the active TMC antenna will be switched on to allow for proper TMC reception. Theres traffic ahead, but the GPS is not recalculating the route. Please go to Navigation Settings, Avoidances, and check if the Traffic (TMC) box is checked. Otherwise, the GPS will not avoid roads with traffic. After an incoming traffic event, the GPS has recalculated the route but still does not guide me around the traffic event. Based on the details of the incoming traffic event, the GPS will anticipate a delay on this particular road segment. Sometimes the calculated delay is minor and the GPS will not divert you from the original route.
Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone (GPS-810/910 only)
Although I have the Bluetooth feature activated on my phone, the GPS does not recognise it. Your phone has to be visible for the GPS. Please check Bluetooth settings on the phone. Sometimes the Bluetooth connection between the phone and GPS is not properly terminated when the GPS is powered down. Switching Bluetooth off and on again on the phone resets the status of the Bluetooth connection. Then try searching for available Bluetooth phones again with the GPS. To pair my Bluetooth-enabled cell phone, I always have to enter the pairing code and confirm the connection to the GPS several times. Once you have paired a hands-free kit like the GPS with your phone, you can authorize the GPS as a safe connection. From then on, the connection will be automatically established when the Bluetooth feature is activated on the phone and the GPS is powered on.
When I pair my phone, it takes a long time until I have a valid hands-free connection. When you try to pair your phone with the GPS for the first time, a lot of data is transferred to the GPS. In particular, this might cause delays if you have a large address book stored on your phone. Phone-book import does not work with my phone. The phone-book export to a hands-free kit is not supported by every Bluetooth-enabled phone. Please check your cell phones owners manual. The phone has to properly support the PBAP Bluetooth profile in order to work with the GPS. I have multiple Bluetooth-enabled phones that I regularly use with the GPS. The GPS is able to store the phone book of multiple phones. Upon connecting to the phone, it will automatically activate the related phone book. My phone book includes hundreds of items. Browsing through the list of items is very time-consuming. The phone book of the GPS offers alphabetical browsing. To activate, press and hold the center button of the remote control knob. A screen overlay will pop up; you can browse through all available characters by rotating the control knob. To stop browsing, simply press the center button again. The Call History is either not visible or not updated. Support of this feature depends on the Bluetooth implementation of your phone. Voice Dial does not work with my phone. Voice dialing has to be provided by your Bluetooth-enabled phone. The GPS is only forwarding the recorded voice prompts to your phone, where they are decoded and analysed. Therefore, you have to first set up voice calling on your cell phone. Please check your phones manual to learn more about this feature. During a call, I can hardly hear the person on the other end. Please use the Volume Mixer in the Settings Audio Out menu to adjust the output level of the phone.
Media Playback
Why do I need to purchase an additional SD card for media storage and playback? To protect the operating software from being damaged by overwriting or deleting, it is not possible to load media files to the internal flash memory. My brand-new SD card does not work in the GPS unit. Please note that the GPS-200/300/500 only supports standard SD cards. Memory cards following the new SDHC standard will not work. Please also check if the card is formatted according to the FAT32 standard.
What kind of memory cards are supported? The GPS supports the following SD cards: GPS-200/300/500: Standard SD up to 4GB GPS-410/510/810/910: Standard SD up to 4GB, SDHC up to 32GB (SD card has to be FAT32-formatted) Is it possible to watch video while using the Navigation feature? To prevent driver distraction, it is not possible to watch a video while using the navigation feature. In some countries, it is illegal to watch video while driving. Can I listen to music while using the Navigation function? Yes. One of the biggest advantages of the GPS is to use the media player and the Navigation function simultaneously. The current track info will be displayed at the bottom of the map view. Its easy to switch between the music player and the navigation software by clicking on the Track Info bar. In the music player, you see the basic routing information in the bottom bar. A simple click leads you back to the navigation screen. My computer doesnt recognize the GPS. Please check for the following: The GPS is properly connected to the PC with the original USB cable. Make sure that you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 or higher and all the latest Windows updates installed on your computer. Check if the device doesnt conflict with other hardware or network drives. You might require admin rights to change drive-letter assignment on your PC. If in MTP mode (see USB section of Settings menu), please ensure that Windows Media Player 11 or higher is properly installed. The GPS does not play my media files. Please see the Quick-Start Guide for supported audio and video formats. How can I convert my media files into the supported formats? Please go to the Settings screen and set the USB port of your GPS to MTP mode. See Syncing Media Files in the Quick-Start Guide for detailed instructions on how to convert and transfer media files to the SD card in the GPS. Is it possible to sync the media content on the SD card with more than one computer? Yes, you can synchronize the content on the SD card in your GPS with any computer with Windows Media Player 10 (or higher) properly installed. Please check in your Windows Media Player settings that the Auto Synchronization option is set to Off. Windows Media Player sometimes does not produce high-quality video output. It is possible to convert your video files without using the Windows Media Player. Software like MediaCoder (a free download is available at http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/) is able to convert most of your video standards into one of the supported formats. Do I have to copy my music or video content to a special folder on the SD card? No, the media player in the device will automatically scan the full SD card for content.
My music is not properly sorted by songs, artists, albums or genres. The GPS unit manages music content by reading the ID3-tag information. Sorting by any of the above categories only works if the music has been stored with correct and complete ID3-tag information. The music player in the GPS does not show any album art. Unfortunately, there is no common standard for implementing album art into the ID3-tag information of MP3 audio files. You can, however, import album art by using an MP3 ID3 auto tagger like FixTunes (www.fixtunes.com). This software will try to correct wrong ID3 information and add available album art to each music track. An Internet connection is required. Windows software shows the message Unsafe Device Removal after unplugging the GPS from the computer. This is a standard Windows message that appears after unplugging a USB storage device without using the Windows software Eject function. We recommend double-clicking the Eject icon in the bottom-right corner of your system tray. This will avoid loss of data. My music collection includes hundreds of tracks. Browsing through the track list is very time-consuming. The music player of the GPS-810/910 offers alphabetical browsing. To activate, press and hold the center button of the remote control knob. A screen overlay will pop up. You can browse through all available characters by rotating the control knob. To stop browsing, simply press the center button again.
