SomeofthesamesuggestionsfromQuestion1withageappropriateideas.Simplyseparatingthechildreninsteadof attemptingtofigureoutwhostarteditcanhelp.Ifyoucantgetalong,gointoyourroomoraseparatepartofthe house.Youcanhavequiettimefor30minutesorsowherenoonetalks.CantagreeontheTVprogram,TVgoes off.Kidssoonlearntonegotiatethisontheirown.Understandingthateachchildneedsindividualtimewiththe parentcanbesimply15minutestotalkhelpssothatnoonefeelsoverlooked.

On Friday, October 29, 2010, Tonya Logan presented Depression in Teens to D.C. Public Schools workers. We added 39 villagers!
Whycantpeopledisciplinetheirchildrenliketheyusedto? Ibelievethatpeoplecanstilldisciplineinthesameways.Extremesaredangerous,whethertoolenientortoostrict. Noonesaysyoucannotphysicallydiscipline,justnottotheextremenomarksorbruises.Ipersonallybelieve physicaldisciplineisdangerousforthechildandparent.IwantmychildtobehavewhenIamnotaroundand wouldneverallowanyonetophysicallydisciplinethem.Ifphysicaldisciplinewheretheonlythingtowork,my childwouldneedmetoalwaysbearoundtomonitorhis/herbehaviorandthusIwouldnotbeinstillingself discipline.
Whatisagoodbedtimeforkidswhentheyareoutofschool? Againthisdependsontheageandthechild.Somechildrencanfunctionwellwithlesssleepthanotherssoknow thechildandwhathe/sheneedstodothenextday.Allowchildrenleniencywhenschoolisout,toapoint.Ask themwhattheythinktheirbedtimeshouldbeasweneedtoencourageindependenceandcanthusassesstheir thinking.Ifunreasonable,compromise.Youaretheparentandthusyougettoultimatelydecide.
Atwhatageshouldyourmixedgenderchildrenstopsharingabedroom? Idonotthinkthatthereisamagicageforthis.Somekidsprefertosharearoomuptotheteenyearswhichmightbe ok,butchildrenstillneedtohaveindividualspace.Iwouldsaywhentheolderchildbeginstocomplainabout privacy,itshouldbechanged,ifpossible.Thisissometimesdifficultifbedtimesaredisparatesoallthisneedstobe considered.

Ispentmyentirechildhoodinthefostercaresystemdriftinginandoutofrelationshipsandtryingtofind whatonewouldcallnormal.WhileIdidntbouncearoundfromplacetoplace,Ididfaceturmoil.In additiontoenduringthenormaldifficultieschildrenandteensfaceintheirdevelopmentalyears,Ialso experiencedthelossdeathbrings,exposuretomolestationanddrugs,andturningtoalcoholallbefore theageof15. Iofficiallyagedoutoffostercareatage18,justtwodaysshyofmy19thbirthdayandadayafter graduatingfromhighschool.Iwaslost,alone,andbroken.Thesystemthatoncekeptmymereexistence alivehadvanished.Onewouldthinkthesystemthatputmeherewouldhavepreparedmebetterforthe worldIwasabouttoface. Iexperiencedaformofhomelessnesswithoutastableplacetocallmyown.NottomentionIlackedthe essentialskillsmostpeopletakeforgrantedsuchascooking,washingclothes,payingbills,maintaininga bankaccount,andevenholdingdownajobformorethanaweek.Lifebecamesurvivalofthefittestfor me.IlearnedhowtohustleandmanipulateanysituationtogettheresultsthatIneeded.Itsdefinitely notaplaceyouwanttobe. Ifinallycaughtabreakatage20andcouldbreatheasighofrelief.Ifoundaprogramdesignedfor peoplejustlikeme.Eventhoughtheprogramonlyprovidedservicesuptotheageof21,foratleasta yearIhadaplacetostayandsomethingtoeatbyattendingcollege.ButIwasforgettingonecrucial factor;collegeatthattimeinmylifewasnotrightforme.Likemanyfosterkids,Istruggledtoevenget outofhighschool. Ispentthenextyearlivingoncampusandnevergoinganywhere,especiallyduringtheholidaysand schoolbreaksbecauseIhadnoplacetogo.Iwaseventuallykickedoutofcollegeandspentthenexttwo yearsinacontrollingrelationship.Duringthistime,Iwasalsodiagnosedwithobsessivecompulsive disorder,becameasinglemother,andbattledcancerallbeforetheageof23. Itsbeenalmost17yearsnowsinceIagedoutofthesystem,andalothaschanged.Immarriedwitha familyofmyown,butnotadaygoesbythatIforgetaboutthedifficultroadsIhadtotraveltogethere.I willneverforgetwhatitfeltlikenottohaveastrongnetworkofpeopleorafamilytoguidemeinthe rightdirection. IamtrulygratefulthatGodhasgivenmetheopportunitytobehereandtochallengeeachandeveryone ofyoutomakeadifferenceinthelivesofchildreninfostercare.Beinginthesystemdoesnotmeanyou arealone.
