I was very disappointed is this blackberry product. I will never get another blackberry! If you are as slow minded as this phone then by all means it should be a great fit, but if you are looking for a fast responsive phone.

My Storm is the first RIM device I have owned. I never cared for the keyboard on the other devices or for their size. I received the package in a timely manner after I made order online. The merchant was very efficient in shipping orders out.The phone looks nice.

I recently bought the BB Storm, and I absolutely hated it. I was looking for another phone carrier this December to switch from crummy T-Mobile. I was looking to go to Verizon.

The BlackBerry Storm 9500 is one powerful smartphone. It looks corporate and stylish in one. A bit bulky but love the solid feel. The BlackBerry Storm 9500 work excellent with emails, sms, memo, word, and other great features it has. I love the corporate and sophisticated design.

News & Commentary on Childrens Tech

Ready to Move?

On a recent visit to India, I was videotaping in a preschool. During a music lesson, I flipped the viewfinder on my camera around, so the children could see their own faces. The effect was immediate. Faces became animated, and eyes started to sparkle, and the teachers wouldnt let me leave until everyone had a turn. The event was a reminder of how powerful it is to see yourself on a screen. This trick is being exploited by both Microsoft Kinect and the Sony PlayStation Move, with titles like EyePet (page 16) and Kinectimals (page 18). What does this expanding form of human computer interface (HCI) mean for children? New exercise, sports and dance games will watch, score and rate a child. The line between concrete and abstract could blur with augmented reality techniques (see http://bit.ly/9h0rva). A traditional block, toy, book or playing card could jump to life, inside a 3D screen. Point, click, drag and drop will be replaced by a voice and motion. Skype-like plugins could make game sharing as routine as starting up a game and giving a voice command. New motion-based methods could help children learn to read and hardwire abstract math relationships to their hand. This welcome step away from abstraction has created a new set of research questions for educators and designers. Theres never been a better time to ask how can we tap this power for the benefit of children? September 2010

World, My Daughter Starts College Today
Many parents and teachers are familiar with a letter allegedly written by Abraham Lincoln to his sons schoolmaster.* Here's my update with a technology twist. World, my daughter starts college today. Give her fast, free Wi-Fi and an Ethernet cable for her dorm room. Make it easy to share work with others on projectors as bright as her ideas; to print her work on fast public access printers. Make it easy for her to plug in her laptop, at any library table or classroom seat. Grant her access to the latest, most powerful digital authoring tools, along with the time and support to test their limits. But balance her schedule with a hike in the woods and a swim in the lake.
Show her how an entire future could unravel with a single Facebook photograph or a hastily written email; and help her understand the subtleties between fact/fiction, selling/informing, and truth/lies. Provide her with teachers who are digital role models, who embrace and use new technology both inside and outside their fields, yet value old-fashioned facts that are correct, good spelling, and well crafted projects. Help her to be charitable with her digital abilities; to help an older person or a fellow student in need. But especially world, don't let her text in class, even if it is to me. * According to the "Lincoln Never Said That" page at http://illinoishistory.gov/facsimiles.htm the authenticity of the letter is doubted.

Microsoft Kinect

Release Date: November 4 Price: $300 for the lowest cost bundle Pricing details: The $300 bundle includes a 4 GB Xbox 360 with no hard disk, a Kinect sensor and a copy of Kinect Adventures. The Kinect Sensor alone is $150, providing you already own an Xbox 360. How does it work? Kinect is a special camera housed in a sensor bar that also contains a microphone, that you plug into an existing Microsoft Xbox 360 game console. The camera does a lot more than take pictures. It is a sensitive, intelligent, motion capture system that continually scans the room, and can see people, faces and detailed motions. You can drive a car by pretending to hold an invisible steering wheel, or swat at a soccer ball by moving your hand in thin air. Facial recognition is provided by a camera that works in concert with the motion sensor, allowing you to assign players automatically, say, for a trivia game. Clearly, the combination of face and voice recognition working in concert with a connected console running services like Twitter and Facebook could be a potent mix for "the rest of us." This system also has a lot of potential for exercise games. Any drawbacks? Kinect is not good for fine motor control. However, it could be used in concert with a regular wireless Xbox controller. Like the PS3 Move system, Kinect has to be calibrated before using. How does it compare with the Wii? With no controllers to find, charge or run over with the vacuum cleaner, Kinect might offer the fastest, most direct route to interactivity. However, it will only work with some and is best suited to gross motor dancing or sports activities.

Feature Reviews

SEPTEMBER 1, 2010 Here's an alphabetical listing of new products, along with a full review, ratings and tester feedback. The "Entry Date" refers to the date we first learned of the product.
Bartleby's Book of Buttons
In this iPad app, you must help Bartleby, a "where is Waldo" type of character, find buttons for his collection. Each page contains switches, buttons, and sliding controls. Sometimes, you might need to tilt the screen, making this a true "digital pop-up book" adventure. It would be fun to read with a group of children, so the children could call out the answers. There's not a lot of content, and there's no hint system to help a younger child who might be stuck. It might be nice to incorporate a "read to me" mode to put the whole story in context. There are also no language options, other than English. For getting a child problem solving, however, this app is worth every penny of it's $5 price. The art and audio are of the best quality, and they are well matched to the story. Details: Octopus Kite/Big D TV, Inc., http://octopuskite.com. Price: $4.99. Ages: 2up. Platform: iPad. Teaches/Purpose: reading, logic. Rating (1 to 5 stars): 4.7 stars. Entry date: 8/10/2010. [WB]

Bass Pro Shops: the Hunt

Educational Realistic but hard to learn, this hunting game contains ten North American hunting regions, stocked with whitetail deer, mule deer, elk, moose, bears, boars and big Entertaining horned sheep. Design Features There are three gameplay modes: Quick Hunt, Season Hunt, and BPS Challenges. You can also battle other hunters in single-console multiplayer and five social arcade Good Value games: Target Range Shooting; ATV Racing; Blind Fire; Duck Hunt and Forest Frenzy. ESRB Rating: Teen, Blood Content includes a variety of weapons, supplies and gear including rifles, Violence shotguns, bows, calls, scents, blind, an ATV and GPS mapping technology. The Wii version comes with a rifle controller ($40/bundle) that, when paired with the Wii remote is designed to create a more realistic hunting experience. Our testers thought the controls were difficult to learn, and found it hard to aim accurately at your target. Although the game seems more realistic than other hunting games such as Cabela's Big Game Hunter (which shows you where to hit your target for a kill) it less enjoyable since it was nearly impossible to get an accurate shot. Details: XS Games LLC, www.xsgames.biz. Price: $30. Ages: 10-up. Platform: Wii, Xbox 360. Teaches/Purpose: hunting. Rating (1 to 5 stars): 2.8 stars. Entry date: 5/12/2010. [WB]

Celebrating Michelle Obama
Featuring interesting content, sound effects and clear narration, this 14 page ebook for the iPad or iPhone glosses over the life of Michelle Obama, from birth through the White House. Each page contains a fun fact, consisting of a narrated page with scrolling text. Features include the ability to view the book in three languages (English, Chinese or Spanish), while hearing it in another language. In other words, you can see the printed pages in English, while hearing them in Chinese, or the other way around. One of the best parts of this book is the ability to hear sections of original historic speeches, in Michelle Obama's voice. If you're looking for interactive features, you won't find it with this book, however. The navigation is a bit confusing, for example, you don't always know the difference between a page and a fun fact. See also Celebrating President Barack Obama. Details: Mobistories, www.stillmotionmedia.com. Price: $1.99. Ages: 8-up. Platform: iPhone, iPad, iPad Universal. Teaches/Purpose: reading, history, political science, English, Chinese, Spanish. Rating (1 to 5 stars): 3.6 stars. Entry date: 5/16/2010. [WB]

Disney Sing It: Family Hits
The latest game in Disney's Sing It Series, this karaoke game turns your Wii or PS3 into a well designed, pitch-sensing vocal coach. You can also Learn to Sing It better with Anika Noni Rose, the voice of Princess Tiana in The Princess and the Frog. Disappointingly, there is no way to turn off the vocals, making this a song along, rather than a karaoke experience. The game is $50 bundled with a microphone, $40 without. The bottom line? If you like the music, you'll like this title. And who wouldn't like "The Bare Necessities?" Details: Disney Interactive Studios, www.disneyinteractivestudios.com. Price: $50. Ages: 6-up. Platform: PlayStation 3, Wii. Teaches/Purpose: music, pitch, singing, reading, vocalization. Rating (1 to 5 stars): 4.1 stars. Entry date: 8/12/2010. [WB]

Echo Smartpen

It's always nice to see things get more powerful and cheaper at the same time. The Echo, now two years newer than the two-year old Pulseis also designed to work with standard headphones. The charging cradle has been replaced by a cable that (unfortunately) is not a standard mini USB cable, but that's a minor flaw for an incredible product. Ideal for augmenting an older student's note-taking abilities, the lithium-ion battery, Java-powered recorder that is just a bit fatter than a Sharpie marker, with a tiny camera in its tip that can detect a faint pattern of dots to give the pen its bearings. Without this special paper, you're left with an old fashioned, rather expensive pen, however. Here's a summary of the three biggest features: a) It can capture everything you write and "replay" it on a Windows or Macintosh computer screen. b) It can record large amounts of extremely clear stereo audio (up to 100 hours for the 1GB model and 200 hours for the 2 GB model). c) It can associate written notes with the sounds that are going on, at the exact instant the marks on the page were made. So you go back to a page of old notes that you made yesterday, touch the point of the pen on a sentence or sketch, and hear that part of the lecture. For a reporter doing an Interview, this feature is a must-have. Echo is based on the Swedish Anoto dotted media technology, and it comes from the same inventor, Jim Marggraff, formerly from Leapfrog. Details: Livescribe, Inc., www.livescribe.com. Price: $150 and $200. Ages: 14-up. Platform: Windows, Mac OSX. Teaches/Purpose: creativity, pen-based computing. Rating (1 to 5 stars): 4.8 stars. Mission-US (www.mission-us.org)
Mission US is a free (grant funded) adventure game that teaches US history. In Mission 1: For Crown or Colony? you help Nat Wheeler, a 14-year-old printer's apprentice in 1770 Boston. Nat must complete tasks, meeting with merchants, soldiers, sailors and poets. The site is currently in beta form, and is open for free registration. Content includes reading primary historical documents, collecting period artifacts, and clicking on Smartwords (vocabulary) embedded in the dialog. Nats fate rests in players hands: Should he complete his apprenticeship and support the Patriots cause, remain loyal to the crown, or leave Boston, taking a new job at sea? No matter what path Nat chooses, he witnesses the events of the Boston Massacre and, ultimately, must decide where his allegiance lies. Designed for use at home or in school, the game is divided into five parts, 15-20 minutes each, and may be played individually or collaboratively. In addition to the game, teachers can download support materials and vocabulary activities. While geared to middle-school age kids, the program was developed to enhance current social studies programs in schools and so the games would be applicable for kids from 5th to 9th grades. The games work with kids from different skill levels. According to Grand Communications (who is doing PR for the service) the next game will be on slavery and will be introduced in spring 2011 with two additional games scheduled for 2012. It was created by Kids Interactive and Electric Funstuff for WNET in cooperation with the Center for Children and Technology. Details: Thirteen WNET New York, www.thirteen.org. Price: $free. Ages: 12-up. Platform: Windows, Mac OSX, Internet Site. Teaches/Purpose: history, social studies. Rating (1 to 5 stars): 4.8 stars. Entry date: 8/31/2010. [WB]
Monkey Madness: Island Escape
You are stranded on an island and attacked by monkeys which you much fend off with a slingshot or water gun. The controls are awkward for any right-handed person as you need to use the stylus to aim and the face buttons (A, B, etc.) to shoot. The game plays like a light-gun arcade game similar to Area 51, only shorter, clunkier, and harder to use. At $30 for what's essentially a point-and-click flash game on the DS, there's no reason to buy this title. Details: Storm City Entertainment, www.stormcityentertainment.com. Price: $20. Ages: 8-up. Platform: Nintendo DS. Teaches/Purpose: logic. Rating (1 to 5 stars): 2 stars. Entry date: 8/2/2010. [AB]
ESRB Rating: Everyone 10+, Cartoon Violence, Mild Violence
PBS Kids Play! (www.pbskidsplay.org)
From clunky to spunky, PBS Kids Play has become much more responsive since we first reviewed it, just weeks after launch back in 2008 (CTR, April '08), when it earned just 2.9 stars. Compare that with 4.4 stars on our instrument in the current version. Why the change? This year's edition is based entirely in Flash, so no downloads or installations are needed. All you need is a Mac or Windows computer and a speedy web connection. There's also a new three room menu that puts all the content within a click, making it much easier for a young child to get out of whatever he or she gets into. That's a good thing, because some of the content that has been hiding in the crevices is very poorly designed; right next to some gems, including full epsides of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. If there was an award for "most improved," PBS Kids Play would be a viable candidate. If there's a downside, it is that there are still remnants of the original service on the lower part of the screen, in the form of a scrolling carrousel-style menu that can lead children into a sluggish, over-narrated maze of PBS characters. Kids will be smart enough to avoid this part of Play. Unlike Nick's www.mynoggin.com or Disney's www.preschooltime.com, no credit card commitment is needed. You get 15 days free -- no strings or codes; a practice that is refreshing and respectful of busy parents. That also makes it easy to have a look for yourself, which we recommend. Note that there's a new $500/year classroom edition option that makes it possible to track the progress for an entire classroom of kids, for up to a year, for either home or classroom access (each child gets his or her own login). Details: Public Broadcasting Service , www.pbskids.org. Price: $10/month. Ages: 3 -6. Platform: Windows, Mac OSX, Internet Site. Teaches/Purpose: reading, school readiness, upper/lower case letters, logic, classification. Rating (1 to 5 stars): 4.4 stars. Entry date: 1/11/2008. [WB]

Time, Money & Fractions, Grades 1-2
What would a worksheet look like on a multi-touch screen? Here's a poster-child example. Thirty sets of instantly corrected problems are interspersed with simple arcade games. Weaknesses include some of the clock icons are too small, and you have to type in answers using the iMac's keyboard, a less than smooth process because the keyboard interrupts the flow of the activity by covering the screen. Also, you can't turn off the repetitive background music, and progress is not recorded, even though children are asked to type in their name. Finally, we don't like the way the app automatically jumps to School Zone's web site upon exit. Strengths include the nice mix of problems with arcade games -- a tried and true formula that works well. We also liked the way the overall progress is tracked on the bottom of the screen with icons that are gradually letting children see where they are in the program. All in all, this is a useful app for use in classrooms to provide some extra practice with content right from any math curriculum. Details: School Zone Publishing, www.schoolzone.com. Price: $9.99. Ages: 6-8. Platform: iPad Universal. Teaches/Purpose: telling time, money, fractions. Rating (1 to 5 stars): 4 stars. Entry date: 9/2/2010. [WB]

uDraw GameTablet

Ease of Use 7
Educational The versatile Wii Remote can become a graphics tablet when it is snapped inside the uDraw GameTablet from THQ (www.worldofudraw.com). Entertaining The $70 Wii-only tablet will be released with a series of three drawing-based titles. Design Features While I found the controls to be less-than-intuitive, older kid testers, aged 11 and 13, figured them out quickly, and were able to make some beautiful watercolor sketches, Good Value and replay them when using the included title, called uDraw Studio (to which the ESRB Rating: Everyone ratings apply). If you're looking for the smooth glide of a Wacom tablet, you're likely to be disappointed. There's a slight lag between the dab of your stylus and what you see on your screen, and younger children will need help in order to toggle between the drawing tools palette and their sketch. Soon, you discover that as a drawing tool, uDraw has some real chops. There's an infinite number of colors that can be mixed or layered on a range of textured surfaces. You can replay your drawings as a slide show, erase, cut & paste, stamp and change for switching between, say, markers or charcoal. Work can be saved, or exported to your Wii's SD card in JPG format, but unfortunately you can't import graphics. Sorry kids, no drawing mustaches on Grandma. Two additional games (E-rated) will be Dood's Big Adventure and Pictionary ($30). Details: THQ, Inc., www.thq.com. Price: $70. Ages: 6-up. Platform: Wii. Teaches/Purpose: art, creativity, fine motor control. Rating (1 to 5 stars): 4.4 stars. Entry date: 8/10/2010. [WB]
