Dear Word Lover: Here we are at a new Words weekend, with a new super-sized postcard (where once we had brochures), and new speakers who are good, ol speakers. No, no, the speakers are not old (I really must watch my words), they are speakers who were here then and are here now because we invited some of our most popular speakers to return. And what a line-up we have, as you will see as you browse through this postcard, finding photos and brief bios of each. Your first stop is the Postcard Puzzle on this page. Solve it and follow the rules. More puzzles abound in the Packet of Puzzles youll receive when you check in at the Front Desk. You have until midnight on Saturday to solve six word games. The rules are in the Packet for submitting solutions, but remember Mamma dont allow no rule-breakers here! We mean in the judges chambers, when we are looking for prize-winning solvers. Prizes will keep popping up all over the place, and well start with Hasbros new and special Folio Edition of Boggle, awarded to every member of the winning Scramble Scrabble team. Please see the Friday night schedule for Scramble Scrabble details, then seek out speakers, Game Night, Will Shortz, tea time book-signing, puzzle solutions and, finally, the Happy Ending when solutions are announced and winners are rewarded. You dont have to solve anything to make reservations. Just call 800.772.6646 and be sure to say you are coming for Wonderful World of Words!
POSTCARD PUZZLE
I wanted to phone each of you to let you know why Words is special this year, but that was not possible. So Im asking you to figure it out for yourself and then present your solution to the CODE BREAKER in the Parlor during Saturday mornings session. Its the only time you will receive a prize for your decoding brilliance.

MEET OUR SPEAKERS
Erin McKean is the Editor-in-Chief of American Dictionaries for Oxford University Press, and the editor of Verbatim: The Language Quarterly. She has wanted to be a lexicographer since she was eight years old, and calls herself a dictionary evangelist, but admits shes terrible at Scrabble. John D. Williams, Jr., Executive Director of the National Scrabble Association, writes and lectures on words and games, and is the co-author of Everything Scrabble (Pocket Books). John is also co-creator of the Scrabble Daily Calendar (Workman) and the syndicated Scrabblegrams column. Richard Lederer is a best-selling author and teacher best known for his books on word play, the English language, and writing and grammar. His weekly radio show, A Way with Words, broadcast by KPBS, San Diego Public Radio, is heard world-wide via streaming Internet and podcast. This is his third visit with us at Words!
Will Shortz, the only person in the world with a degree in enigmatology, is now a movie star! Ever since the release of Wordplay (a documentary about Will Shortz and his annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament), Will has appeared on numerous talk shows, in various magazines, newspapers and any media where famous people are presented to the masses. We love him in print and film but even more so here in person. Richard Maltby, Jr. contributes devilish cryptic crossword puzzles to Harpers Magazine. And, oh, yes, he has received the following nominations and/or awards for Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, which he wrote lyrics for, conceived, or directed: Tony, New York Drama Critics, Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and Grammy. His Crossword Puzzle Song (with David Shire) was included in the now-famous Will Shortz documentary, Wordplay. Gloria Rosenthal, president of World of Words and contributing editor at Games magazine, is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the National Puzzlers League, and The Drama League, and is the historian and advisor to Actors Equity on the Gypsy Robe, an opening night tradition of Broadway musicals. She is an award-winning freelance writer of articles, fiction and humor for many national publications. Gloria has been leading the Wonderful World of Words weekend since she covered the opening night of CATS on Broadway.
