EPGS meets at Oxford Valley Mall from 10:00 AM to 9:30 PM this Saturday, March 17th and the first and third Saturday each month through June. (Different dates for June were previously reported incorrectly.) Since December EPGS has had a second meeting location, the Alternate Universes game store in Holmes, meeting every Tuesday evening from 5 PM to 10 PM. And since January we have had a third location, The Games Keep store in West Chester, meeting the second Saturday each month. Due to the increase in rent at Oxford Valley Mall (from $0/meeting through December 2006, $25 in January 2007, and $150 February 2007 and beyond), the members present at the January 6th meeting voted to raise our annual dues to $25. New members wont be charged for their first meeting, and will then be given a discount rate of $20. We have reserved the Community Room at Oxford Valley Mall the first and third Saturdays each month through June, but are looking for an alternate location(s). We would like to continue at the Mall for one meeting a month, and hold a second meeting in a different part of our region. For those interested in participating in and/or following our location search, the YahooGroup epgs_location has been created for this purpose. To join, send an email to epgs_location-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

The Games We Played
Heroics regrets to report that the list of games played from the Oxford Valley meeting January 20th has been lost! Our most played game since the last issue was Goa with eight plays. Tied for second with six plays were Age of Steam, Paydirt and Yspahan. Next were Commands and Colors: Ancients and Twilight Struggle with five plays. And with four plays apiece were Advanced Squad Leader, Cant Stop, Geschenkt, Puerto Rico and Sharp Shooters. Age of Steam, Commands and Colors: Ancients and Goa were played at all three recorded Oxford Valley meetings. Thanks to Steve Cameron and Steve Fitchett for help compiling this information. The following chart lists the games played at Oxford Valley Mall at our February 3rd, 17th and March 3rd meetings, at Alternate Universes January 16th, 23rd and 30th, February 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th, and March 6th and 13th and at The Games Keep February 10th and March 10th.

Unusual Rules for Determining Who Goes First Part II
2003-2007 Frank H. Cunliffe
Part I was published in the May-June 2006 issue of Heroics.
Cartagena 2000 Venice Connection, Leo Colovini The game is begun by the player who looks most like a pirate (not necessarily an advantage). Chicago, Web Published, 2005 Ted Torgerson In the first round the starting player is the player who was most recently on strike from a job. If no player has ever been on strike, then the player who most recently participated in a street brawl, mob scene or demonstration is the start player. Citta, La 2000 Kosmos, Rio Grande, Gerd Fenchel, Choose a starting player using any method you prefer, perhaps the player who most recently visited Italy. Cleopatra and the Society of Architects 2006 Days of Wonder, Bruno Cathala and Ludovic Maublanc The player with the best Egyptian credentials (a nose as famous as Cleopatras, a mummified Crocodile pet, or an extensive hieroglyphic library) starts the game. Coyote 2003 Kidult Game, Spartaco Albertarelli The player who better imitates a laughing coyote will start the game as a scout. Dont Touch that Dial Web Published, 2006 Ted Torgerson The player who most recently listened to the radio is the starting player. Fab Fib 2004 Kidultgame, Spartaco Albertarelli The player whos able to tell the best fib starts the game. Goa 2004 Hans Im Gluck / Rio Grande, Rdiger Dorn The youngest player draws the top-most expedition card and the others follow in clockwise order until a player turns a card with a tiger symbol. This player is the starting player. Grnaland 2006 Altar, Vlaada Chvatil The player who lives further north than anybody else chooses a player to go first. Hera and Zeus 2000 Kosmos / Rio Grande, Richard Borg The starting player is the player who was most recently in a Greek restaurant. If neither player has ever visited a Greek restaurant, Hera begins. Ivanhoe 2000 GMT Games, Reiner Knizia Players draw from a pool of five tokens of different colors. The player drawing purple shuffles The player seated to the left of the dealer starts the first tournament. Lighting: War on Terror 2005 Decision Games, Dan Verssen The Eldest (or best looking) player should turn face-up the top country card in that deck Mayor of Hooverville, The Web Published, 2005 Ted Torgerson On the first day the starting player is the player who was most recently homeless, or if no player has been homeless then the starting player is the player who has most recently been unemployed. Mouse in the House, 2005 Haba, Heinz Meister The player who has most recently seen a white mouse, starts the game.

Once Upon a Time 1993 Atlas Games, Richard Lambert, Andrew Rilstone & James Wallis Decide who will be the first storyteller. This could be the oldest player, the youngest player, or (as is traditional at least among bearded game designers) the player with the longest beard. Or each player could draw a card from the Once Upon A Time deck, and the player whose card starts with the letter closest to the beginning of the alphabet (ignoring A and The) goes first. We suggest that the owner of [sic] game decides which method to use, and that you stick to the same method for the rest of the evening. Patrons of Venice, The 2004 Toccata Games, Ken Stevens Identify the second-youngest player. They will take the first turn. Ramparts (AKA Spiel der Trme) 2006 Caf Games 1993 Schmidt Spiele, Rudi Hoffmann The starting player is the player with the tallest house. The Reef 2000 Kosmos, Christine Lehmann and Wolfgang Lehmann The player who can hold his breath under water the longest is the starting player. If the players cannot decide who can hold their breath the longest, the oldest player starts. Reef Encounter 2004 R&D Games, Richard Breese The player who most recently went swimming now chooses the start player. Spectral Rails 2006 Caf Games, Morgan Dontanville The Sleepiest Player is given the Sprit Leader token. Tempus 2005 Warfrog Games, Martin Wallace The first player at the beginning of the game is the player who most recently had a great idea (or random if you prefer). Ticket to Ride: Mrklin 2006 Days of Wonder, Alan Moon The player who has the best collection of Mrklin trains or is the youngest player goes first.
Unusual Rules for Situations other than Who Goes First
Cosmic Encounters 2000 Avalon Hill Games, Inc., a Hasbro affiliate, Bill Eberle, Jack Kittredge, Peter Olotka and Bill Norton The tournament campaign is over when one player has 15 points. If at the end of a game, more than one player has 15 points, the one with a higher score wins. If it is a tie, the player with the most cards left in his hand wins. If it is still a tie, then the player who was born closest to the start of the year wins. If it is still a tie then the universe has demanded a shared win and there is nothing we can do about it. Rungus Game 1980 TSR Games Dragon #40, Tom Wham The First player bends over the world and drops his/her Runnungitms onto its surface, one at a time. No Runnungitms may be dropped from below the 36-inch height measured by the yardstick (or whatever), which is held above the world with its bottom almost touching the surface. Any Runnungitm which bounces off the world after hitting it or which missed the world entirely is lost in space and out of the round. Play continues in this manner until all of the player or players have dropped their pieces. Snits Revenge 1978 TSR Games, Tom Wham The number of invading Snits is determined in either of the following ways, provided both players agree: 1. The Snit player rolls 3 six-sided dice and adds one spot to the number rolled. This yields 4-19 Snits. 2. The Snit Player gets as many Snits as he can balance on his nose in 30 seconds. The Bolotomus player may not touch, but may tell jokes.

EPGS meets at Oxford Valley Malls Community Room from 10:00 AM to 9:30 PM June 2nd and June 16th. We have also requested the first and third Saturdays of July, and the third Saturdays for the rest of the year. We also meet the second Saturday each month from Noon to 10 PM at The Games Keep in West Chester And we meet each Tuesday from 5-10 PM at Alternate Universes off McDade Boulevard. Well, 10 PM is the time the store says it closes, but thereve always been gamers there when your editor leaves at 11, and he has even seen lengthy Empire Builder games starting as he departs.
1st EPGS Kniziathon
By Dave Bohnenberger and Eric Baskin Despite a fairly low club turnout May 5th, the first ever EPGS Kniziathon was a resounding success. 23 players participated in the event and 20 different games were played. No game was played more than once. The Grand Prize of "Eternal Fame" now belongs to Alex Bove. Scores are based on number of players and length of games.

Adler-Luftwaffenspeil (Eagle Air Force Game)
By Frank Cunliffe
Over the last twenty years German produced games have become increasingly popular in the United States. But until a month ago the only reference to an earlier German game I have ever seen was the following note in a mid1970s Lou Zocchi catalog: ATTENTION GAME COLLECTORS. I have a U-Boat game which was manufactured in Germany; in 1943 by the Propaganda ministry. Its rules are written in German and the British have no chance to win. WIR FAHREN GAGEN ENGELAND is the title and it has plastic U Boats. I am willing to sell this rare treasure to the highest bidder. What am I offered? That was from Lou Zocchis Catalogue #4, which was undated, but presumably from late 1976 as the subsequent Catalogue #5 was dated February 1977. Then the middle of this April I was visiting someone who was participating in the Regency Superior Auction #60. Looking at the auction catalog, I saw that it included many lots of military paraphernalia. Most interesting to me was Lot Number 1421: c.1940 WWII LUFTWAFFE TABLE GAME Extremely rare, almost never seen two-player game from Germany. Original illustrated box contains gameboard 17"x24", original instructions & 24 game pieces, 6 red, 6 blue fighter planes & 6 red, 6 blue bombers made of wood. The game appears unused. Box has some wear, especially around the edges, but cover illustration has only a few minor abrasions. A rare board game. The first of these we have ever seen offered. The catalog estimated its value at $700. Afterward I checked the on-line auction results to see what the winning bid was, and saw that no one was willing to meet even its minimum bid of $240 (plus 15% Buyers Premium). Although there were no other game related items in this auction, there were other items of interest to me. I was most intrigued by was Lot #11, 1944 Japanese World War II Project Fugo Bomb Balloon which also received no bid. This was an unused balloon bomb from the Japanese operation releasing balloons carrying incendiary bombs into the air stream hoping they would blow across the Pacific and land on the United States. This time the minimum was a more robust $9000, and this item too went unsold. (Of course this was not the norm. My host bid on two items and won them both.) For more information about the auction see http://www.regencystamps.com. Like Wir Fahren Gagen Engeland, there is no game by this title listed on www.boardgamegeek.com, but there are two others of the same era with similar titles and the same publishers logo. They are Adler Luftkampfspiel (1935) and Adler Luftverteidigungsspiel (1941) by Verlag Hugo Grfe of Dresden. The description of the game in this auction matches the 1935 game. The 1941 game appears completely different. According to boardgamegeeks entry for Adler Luftkampfspiel (1935), each side has six single-engine fighters, six twin-engine bombers, twelve anti-aircraft guns, four ships and twelve pegs I which I suspect are used to record bomb damage. There are also two dice included in the game. There is also a mapboard consisting of eight rows of ten spaces, plus areas off each end for the respective players to put their pieces when not on the map. The central rows between each players territories are water, suggestive of the English Channel. I suspect that the end of each players section is an airbase. Adler Luftverteidigungsspiel (1941) similarly has six fighters and six bombers per side, but this time the planes move along predetermined paths. There is also a specially marked die. While the focus of the other game was bombing targets, this time it is on shooting down ones opponents planes, each player taking a turn defending. Ironically these games were published in Dresden, one of the cities most devastated by bombing raids. And as the components of these games are flammable cardboard and wood, presumably few survived the war.

GMT East Report
By Dave Bohnenberger GMT East is a small convention held annually in White Plains, NY. This convention is a great opportunity to meet fellow wargamers and game designers. The focus is on GMT games, but all sorts of games are played. Representatives from Replay Publishing and Z-Man games were in attendance with games for sale. This years convention was attended by a number of EPGS members, including Bob Sohn, Randy MacInnis and Mike Nagel, designer of GMTs naval wargame Fighting Sail. Since many game designers are normally in attendance, GMT East is a good opportunity to get a sneak peek at upcoming releases and games in early playtest. Available for play was Combat Commander: Mediterranean, which is an expansion set for GMTs smash hit Combat Commander: Europe; PQ-17, a game on the North Atlantic convoy battles of WWII; The Halls of Montezuma, an upcoming Card-Driven Game on the MexicanAmerican war; and Mike Nagels next release in his Fighting Sail series. Also in heavy use was a WWII air-war game slated to be released by Z-man games. Among currently available games, the most popular seemed to be Combat Commander, with Twilight Struggle, Here I Stand and Sword of Rome trailing not far behind. Also seeing a lot of play was Imperial, the recent euro/wargame release from Eggertspiel/Rio Grande. Also heavily played were a number of GMTs classic Card-Driven wargames, such as For the People, Paths of Glory and Barbarossa to Berlin. Designer Mark McLaughlin was in attendance with his Giant Sized boards and special miniatures for Wellington and The Napoleonic Wars. While GMT East is not focused on tournaments, a couple of events were held. John Foley ran a very wellattended Combat Commander tournament, and Chris Janiec hosted his annual Down in Flames mission. Down in Flames missions are much more interesting than the simple dogfighting mode of the game. Players are split into two teams, one team flying bomber escorts and the other team flying interceptors attempting to prevent those bombers from destroying their targets. Players must choose their targets carefully, as points can be scored for destroying enemy fighters, bombers, or for damage caused to the target and for bombers that safely make it back home. This years mission was a battle over Dunkirk, and was made more interesting by the fact that BOTH teams had opportunities to damage ground targets. Due to opportune play and the great luck of drawing the Fuel Tank Hit card, EPGS Member Dave Bohnenberger managed to shoot down two bombers and an enemy fighter and was awarded the highest point total of all players in the game. Chris Janiec does a great job on these missions and it is truly a highlight of the convention. This great convention would not happen if it werent for the efforts of GMTs Andy Lewis as well as David Fox and Allan Rothberg.

A new feature this year will be seminars. Our own Chris Yaure will run one on Probability and Decision Making.
Days of Wonder
Days of Wonder representative Mike Brown will visit EPGS several times in June to demonstrate the new game Colosseum. He will be at The Games Keep from 2-6 PM June 9th, Oxford Valley Mall June 16th and Alternate Universes 6-9 PM June 19th.
50/50 Raffle
Because of our rent increase, we are now reinstituting the raffle, the entry being equally split between the winner and the Club treasury. Tickets are $2 for one, $4 for three and $6 for five. So far the winners (and Club) have received between $18 and $25 each raffle.
The Games We Played
Goa, the only game played at all four Oxford Valley meetings, had eight plays, the most of any game since the last Heroics issue. Close behind were Sharp Shooters with seven plays and The Pillars of the Earth with six. Tied for fourth were Age of Steam, Puerto Rico, Settlers of Catan and Twilight Struggle with five plays, and tied for ninth were BattleLore, Fortress America, RoboRally and Yspahan played four times apiece. In addition to base Settlers of Catan being played five times, its spin-offs were played a further six times. A surprising newcomer to our games played database is Magic: The Gathering. Perhaps it was played when it first came out; our database only goes back to 1999. Will Dungeons and Dragons or Monopoly be played soon? Thanks to Steve Cameron, Mike Coyle, Steve Fitchett and Karl Kemmerer for help compiling this information. The following chart lists the games played at Oxford Valley March 17th, April 7th & 21st and May 5th; The Games Keep April 14th and May 12th; and Alternate Universes March 20th & 27th, April 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, May 1st & 8th.
