CES 2010 Projectors

By Terry Currier The following is some of the projectors I saw or got infomation from the vendors at CES. Casio America www.casiousa.com Created a mercury-free laser and LED hybrid light source, capable of high-brightness projection for use in the next-generation projectors. Casio is releasing a line of GREEN SLIM projectors with the new light source.
(1.7 inches) and lightweight (5 lbs). Additional qualities include: the projector produces bright colors through upgraded color purity, the light source has a life of approximately 20,000 hours, projection at maximum brightness is possible in a minimum of eight seconds and no cool down is needed when turning the projectors off. It can accommodate WXGA Real display at dots (16:10) and a model that can project without a PC and can communicate wirelessly with PCs.

The high-brightness light of 2,000 or more lumens was then attained by projecting blue laser light, green light converted from blue laser light with the fluorescent element, and light emitted by a red LED through a DLP chip onto the screen. With no lamp to replace, the F10M has an LED light source that promises a lifespan of up to 30,000+ hours, and significantly reduces the hassle, environmental impact, and total cost of ownership. The LED light source also maintains its brightness over the entire life of the projector. From an environmental standpoint, eliminating the bulb, which contains mercury filaments, dramatically reduces the negative environmental effects associated with their disposal. These disposal costs also contribute to total cost of ownership. The LED also maintains its brightness compared to other projectors that lose up to 50% over the life of the bulb. The greater color intensity and wide color gamut allows for a more flexible projector, which can be used on a blackboard or green board, in addition to white boards and screens, thereby opening it up to the education and government marketplaces. communication during a project.
If youre interested in comfort and warmth and knowing what youre going to get (thatd be the carefree beach vacation), I suggest you take a look at one of these three quizzes. Theyre about basic things we all do in Office, and while you may have the answers to some of the questions, you may learn a thing or two you didnt know. Quiz: Office basics - From using task panes to keyboard shortcuts, this quiz covers the things most Office programs have in common. Quiz: Keyboard basics in Office 2003 - Using the keyboard is elemental when it comes to computers. This test you on some of the ways you can make better use of this tool. Quiz: Get started with Word 2003 - Word is one of the most basic programs that all of us probably use on a daily basis. You may be surprised with what you take away from this quiz.
The in-between vacation: Comfortable, yet surprising
The challenge me vacation: A trek through the mountains of Vietnam
If I want to be challenged, and perhaps learn a few things along the way while I enjoy myself, I go for a quiz that may cover things I do once in a while but not enough to be an expert at them. Quiz: Use formulas to revise text in Excel 2003 - I do use formulas in Excel but not to the extent that I know all there is to be known. This quiz covers how to save time in Excel by using formulas instead of retyping to change the text youve already entered. (I had no idea.) Quiz: Project Server - I dont know about you, but Im not a Project Server expert. So when I took this quiz, I didnt do so well. After I took it, I felt I had a bit more information and knowledge than when I started out and, frankly, it inspired me to dig deeper into the program. Kind of like visiting a foreign country and deciding you must start learning the language Arabic, Vietnamese, French, whatever the moment you get home so that youll be prepared the next time you visit. Quiz: Visio scheduling - Although I like and use Visio, Im not too up on using it for creating scheduling diagrams. This quiz taught me some terms and techniques for facilitating
If you like the comfort of a beach vacation with a bit of adventure thrown in there (with a hot shower at the end of the day, of course), try the following quizzes. Theyre not totally difficult, but you may take away a tip or two that you didnt even know existed. Quiz: Get started with Access 2003 - While you may think you can breeze through this quiz like the wind blows the sheets hanging out to dry on a gusty summer evening, you may find a few hidden gems here that you didnt know. Knowing the terminology is critical to understanding how databases work. Quiz: Photos in FrontPage - In a previous life, I used to write Help topics for FrontPage, so I think I know it pretty well. But, to my surprise, there were some things I really didnt know before I took the quiz. And now I do. (And no, I wont tell you which questions I got wrong.) Quiz: Get rid of Track Changes in Word 2003 The Track Changes feature in Word is a sticky subject. Its what I like to call robust. You have a lot of choices to make and when youre working with someone else on a document that uses tracked changes, they need to be on board too. This quiz tests you to see if you really do know everything there is about this feature.

Go forth and quiz thyself
Now you know a little bit about me, the kind of vacation I take, and why I use quizzes to beef up my Office skills. Of course, there are lots of ways you can improve the way you use Office training courses, assistance articles, even a Crabby column or book but the quiz is a bit different. Its interactive like a training course, but its also a lot shorter. And, as a bonus, if you do well, you get a very pretty picture congratulating you when your results are shown just a little prize from us to you. The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance it is the illusion of knowledge. Daniel J. Boorstin

If you want to rip an episode DVD such as a TV series If you need to make a legal backup of any of your each episode will be a separate file. It works great to DVDs the Daniusoft Media Converter Ultimate is a help you keep up on your TV shows. Just convert a good place to start. It does not really copy them, it recorded show over to whatever portable format you does a rip of the disc and converts it into a wealth of need. I converted a one hour 10Gb HD TV show down different formats. Some of the examples it can rip and to a 433Mb MP4 file. Converting it to 3GP2 for my convert to are: iPod, iPhone, Xbox, Xbox 360, PSP, cell phone it takes only about 60Mb. Which is almost PS3, BlackBerry, Window Mobile device, even 3GP. nothing when you consider the 4Gb micro SD card I Although I did try the 3Gp2 on my cell phone I really just brought for $12. would not recommend staring at a 2 cell phone screen I can even choose which chapters to exclude, so the mother-in-law does not have to be in the saved video, shhhh dont tell my wife.
for more than a half an hour. Other common formats include: MP4, MOV, AVI, WMV, MPG, FLV, SWF, VOB, MOV, ASF, and many more. There are over 50 formats it will convert to. My grandson loves to watch animated movies. He also likes to watch our vacation movies, since he is in them. Unfortunately he also likes to take out the disc from the holders put his finger prints all over them, and has rubbed them together. Ive learned to put them on Verbatim VideoGard disc which are 40 time more scratch resistant. Keeping them backed up on the hard drive in high quality MP4 format is perfect since it also saves space. I was really impress with all of what the program can do, and it does it fast too. Besides movies you can remove DRM from most music downloads. Their tech support is good, getting back to you usually within 24 hours. The Daniusoft Media Converter Ultimate has 5 independent function units, DRM Removal; DVD Ripper; DVD burner; Media Converter; Media transfer are built into a single program. It can not only rip the

wireless headphones cost $34.99, the IR transmitter only cost $14.99. Compare that to when I Googled IR transmitter. It gave me a range of prices for TV headphones at $50 to an actual IR transmitter for $100. I dont believe a child will be disturbed with the low hiss, and with a in car DVD unit there may not be any hiss. Both of the headphones have comfortable padded earcups. They are child-sized so I would not recommend them for the whole family even though I could squeeze my adult head into them for testing. The wired set has a cord that is 60 inches long. That is fine for portable DVD or MP3 players. For TV Id say buy an extension. When I tried to put them on my grandson (3 years old) who is quite hyper he wore them for about 10 minutes before wanting them off. My niece on the other hand who is also 3 loved wearing them. It could also be influence of the big brother. When he walked by she commented I have my own headphones now. I had to sneak them out after that comment. She did listen very intently, at one point she asked her mother what was that?. Turns out when her mother backed up the video to that point to replay it, she could hear a flute sound on the headphones that she did not ever hear before. I myself thought the sound quality very good. There is a volume control on the cord, which is handy. Kidz Gear says there is a 108 decibels sensitivity. To protect out kids hearing I think that is too high. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders a government website says: 110 Decibels equal to a rock concert Regular exposure of more than 1 minute risks permanent hearing loss. 100 Decibels equal to a snowmobile No more than 15 minutes of unprotected exposure
recommended. If you want to protect your kids hear make sure you check the volume before and during use. There are companies that make them not to go over 90 decibels. ihearsafe.com has earbud type that wont go over 80 decibels. After all they already dont listen to us, why give them a valid excuse for not hearing us. They are normally priced at $34.99 for the wireless at the Kidz Gear website. I noticed they have a special to buy them for $29.99. The wired ones normally cost $19.99, but you can get them now for $16.99. You can also get them for the same price at Amazon.com. I really wish we had DVD players and headphones when our kids were growing up. Then on trips maybe we wouldnt have heard so much of are we there yet, or my favorite he/she is touching me. www.GearForKidz.com

Diskeeper 2010 Professional
By Terry Currier The defrag that comes with Windows works okay, but is slow. Plus with Vista or Windows 7 I dont get a visual of what it is doing so I dont know how long it will take. I just get the message that it can take minutes or hours. Enter Diskeeper to speed up the job and I can see what it is doing. With the new 2010 there is a new feature they call IntelliWrite technology to prevent fragmentation even before it begins. I will tell you that I tried it first my main computer with XP. It has RAID 0 on it (not my choice), but something was wrong with its compatibility. It kept accessing the drive, and it was not the IntelliWrite. When I was trying to find the reason I turned it off. It still happened. I thought I had an answer in taking out System Mechanic. It did work for a while, but still came back. How do I know it was Diskeeper? Well when I did brought up Task Manager and ended that process it stopped each time. I did a search to see if anyone reported such a problem, but no one did, and there was only praise of Diskeeper. Now when I switched it over to my other computer with Windows 7, no problems. It is running smooth and I even have the IntelliWrite feature turned on. After recording a TV show in HD (10Gb file) and then deleting I like go in and defrag that large gap. The three main features: IntelliWrite fragmentation prevention
technology prevents up to 85% of the fragmentation every system suffers from. It intelligently writes contiguous files to the disk so system resources are not wasted creating fragmentation. InvisiTasking technology is a real-time background processing technology that allows Diskeeper 2010 to defragment your system as fragmentation occurs, even during heavy traffic times without using active system resources. InvisiTasking eliminates the need for scheduling and administrator attention. I-FAAST 2.0 (Intelligent File Access Acceleration Sequencing Technology) accelerates file access times to meet the heavy workloads of file-intensive applications. Utilizing a specially formulated technology, I-FAAST closely monitors file usage and organizes the most commonly accessed files for the fastest possible access, up to 80% faster.
paging file. You can help maintain peak Windows performance, and help Diskeeper run better at the same time. Master File Table (MFT) Defragmentation defragments the Master File Table (MFT). The MFT is used by the NTFS file system to locate files on a volume, so fragmentation of the MFT slows the retrieval of files on the disk, whether these files themselves are fragmented or not. Defragmenting the MFT will improve the overall performance of the volume. If you scroll down on Diskeeper you will see more information. The Dashboard tab displays details about Fragmentation Prevention and Automatic Defragmentation, the health of your volumes, the idle resources that Diskeeper uses to accelerate volume performance, and other useful defragmentation information. The Dashboard tab includes these sections: System Improvement This section of the Dashboard tab relates to your entire system and shows the percentage of improvement Diskeeper has provided in file read and write access time since the previous day. IntelliWrite Fragmentation Prevention This section of the Dashboard tab explains that IntelliWrite increases system performance by preventing fragmentation before it happens. System Fragmentation Prevention Graph This section of the Dashboard tab shows system fragmentation prevented by IntelliWrite in realtime. In the graph, fragmentation prevented every second, within the last minute, for your entire system, is displayed in green. The scale on the left side of the graph pertains to the number of fragments that have been prevented and the scale along the top of the graph pertains to the seconds in the last minute.

everyone from an amateur saving family memories to photography and video enthusiasts. I personally fall in the category of a digital photography enthusiast and video amateur. I really do more with videos containing still photos than video clips. But look forward to exploring Video Studio. Since I have only had the Photo & Video Bunle a short time, I have not used VideoStudio yet. I have the application installed and have looked around and played a little but that is all. I plan to review Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 first and then dig into Video Studio X2. I expect my first project to be editing photos with Paint Shop Pro and importing them into VideoStudio to create slide shows. So stay tuned to the CRUG newsletters for continuing reviews. Painter Photo Essentials I am a big fan of Painter Essentials and just completed a short class on creating paintings from your photos and trying out your artistic creativity with Painter Essentials. I understand that Painter Photo Essentials 4 is a reduced version of Painter Essentials but have not installed it. Based on information from the Corel web site I believe that Painter photo Essentials includes only the photo painting portion of the full product. But that is plenty. With no real artistic talent you can turn photos into works of art. With a photo open, just select a painting style and watch the brush strokes as your painting is created. When photo painting is complete hand touch up can add you own personal touch. I have previously reviewed Painter Essentials 4 and have that review available on request. I plan to see if Painter Photo Essentials will run on an old laptop so that I can report on exactly what features it includes. Corel MediaOne Corel MediaOne is an organizer that offers quick photo fixes, straightforward editing features and options for sharing photos. With Paint shop Pro Photo and its organizer and impressive editing it not seem like MediaOne is really necessary. It is MediaOnes ability to create projects and slide shows that give it an advantage. MediaOne contains creative project templates that you drag and drop photos into creating photo projects and shows to save or share with friends and family.
Scrapbooking is increasingly popular and the creative backdrops, picture tubes, photo frames, designs and layouts provide new options. I look forward to spending more time creating scrapbooks. I already have ideas on how to use several of the project templates. PhotoRecovery If you have ever accidentally deleted images from your camera or media card and then realized the error PhotoRecovery can help. It is compatible with most USB, FireWire or other Digital Media readers. Or can recover data directly from digital cameras, camcorders, MP3 players, flash drives, Palm Pilots, and other devices. PhotoRecovery Limited was included in the Photo & Video Bundle. It is simple to use. Just select the drive that contains the lost data, identify the file types to search for and start the scan.

Quickly Updating Values

Many people use Microsoft Excel to keep track of important information, such as price sheets or cost tables. This data is then used to help calculate proposals or to figure out how much should be charged to customers. It is not uncommon to need to update information in these tables on a periodic basis. For instance, your company may decide that it will increase all prices in the company by ten percent this year. If you have rather large pricing tables, you may not know the best way to update the prices by the ten percent. Obviously you could make a secondary table and then base the information in that table on a formula, such as =B3 * 1.1. This is actually more work than is necessary, however. Excel provides a much quicker way to update values in a table by a uniform amount. Simply follow these steps: 1. Select an empty cell, somewhere outside the range used by your pricing table. 2. Enter the value 1.1 in the empty cell. 3. With the cell selected, press Ctrl+C to copy its contents to the Clipboard. 4. Select the entire pricing table. You should not select any headers or non-numeric information in the table. 5. Choose the Paste Special option from the Edit menu. Excel displays the Paste Special dialog box.
Using the IF Worksheet Function
Microsoft Excel provides a wide range of worksheet functions you can use. One of the most versatile worksheet functions is IF. This function allows you to test some condition, and then use a value if the condition is true or a different value if the condition is false. For instance, consider the following example:

=IF(A2<C2,Too low,)

Notice that IF requires three arguments, each separated by commas. The first argument (in this example, A2<C2) is the conditional test. If the test proves true, then the second argument (in this case, the test string Too low) is used. If the test proves false, then the third argument (in this case, an empty string) is used. In other words, if the value in cell A2 is lower than the value in cell C2, then this formula returns the string Too low. Otherwise, it returns an empty string. You are not limited, of course, to returning strings in an IF function. You can return any value you want, including the values stored in other cells. For example:

=IF(A2<C2,B6-B7,43)

Paste Special dialog box.
In this case, if A2 is less than C2, then the value derived by subtracting B7 from B6 is returned. If A2 is not less than C2, then the value 43 is returned.
6. In the Operation area of the dialog box, make sure you select the Multiply option.
7. Click on OK. 8. Select the cell where you entered the value in step 2. 9. Press the Delete key. If you are using Excel 2007, then the steps are slightly different: 1. 5. With the Home tab of the ribbon displayed, click the down-arrow at the bottom of the Paste option (left side of the ribbon). Excel displays a dropdown list of pasting options. 6. Choose the Paste Special option from the dropdown list. Excel displays the Paste Special dialog box. 7. In the Operation area of the dialog box, make sure you select the Multiply option. 8. Click on OK. 9. Select the cell where you entered the value in step 2. 10. Press the Delete key.
