HP-UX 11i vPars version A.02.02 will not boot on rp5405, rp5470 and rp7400 servers with PA8700 processors
This bulletin applies to customers who have received HP-UX 11i Virtual Partitions (vPars) on the following CD: Virtual Partitions - version A.02.02 [product # T1335AC; CD part # 5012-1997] Or who have downloaded vPars version A.02.02 from the HP Software Depot: http://www.software.hp.com/ And who plan to use vPars version A.02.02 on the following servers with PA8700 processors: rp7400/N4000 Enterprise Servers [product # A3639C + A6687A or A6688A processors] rp5470 (L3000) Enterprise Servers [products # A6144A/B + A6798A, A6805A/B or A6152A processors] rp5405 (L3000) Enterprise Servers [products # A7117A, A7118A, A9805A] Note: rp5405 servers contain only PA8700 processors. rp5470 servers can be ordered with PA8700 or PA8600 processors. rp7400 servers can be ordered with PA8700, PA8600 or PA8500 processor options. HP has identified an issue with the HP-UX 11i vPars version A.02.02. The servers noted above with PA8700 processors will not boot with a vPars version A.02.02 /stand/vpmon boot kernel. These systems will begin the boot-up process and then reset without generating an error message. This issue is due to a unique memory management scenario. HP will be providing a patch to resolve this issue by the end of April 2003. Note: This issue does not affect vPars version A.02(01). This issue does not affect other vPars supported servers with PA8700 processors.

HP's Recommendation:

You should not install Virtual Partitions (vPars) version A.02.02 on the servers noted above if they contain PA8700 processors. You will be able to install and use vPars version A.02.02 after installing the patch that corrects this issue. The vPars patch is scheduled for release by the end of April 2003.

Customers can obtain patches from the ITRC via the web or by contacting your local HP Customer Support Representative or Sales Office. Patches can be downloaded from the following locations: 1. ITRC web site: http://itresourcecenter.hp.com/ Login with your user ID and password if you are already registered, or register according to the instructions provided. Remember to save the user ID assigned to you, along with your password. Click on Individual Patches, then "Retrieve a Specific Patch" and enter the patch name in the Patch Name field, and click on "Retrieve" button to locate the required patch. 2. ITRC free FTP server: ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/
If you do not know which processor is installed in your system(s), it can be determined by using the following steps: 1. Perform the following command: # /usr/bin/model 2. Review the output it should be similar to one of the following for each of the affected servers using PA8700 processors of 650MHz, 750MHz or 875MHz clock speed: 9000/800/L3000-6X (for 650MHz version on rp5405 or rp5470) 9000/800/L3000-7X (for 750MHz version on rp5470) 9000/800/L3000-8X (for 875MHz version on rp5470) 9000/800/N4000-6X (for 650MHz version on rp7400) 9000/800/N4000-7X (for 750MHz version on rp7400) If you do not know which version of vPars is installed on your system(s), it can be determined by using the following steps: 1. Perform the following command: # /usr/sbin/swlist -l product | grep Virtual 2. Install vPars version A.02(01). If you purchased vPars and are on HPs software subscription service, you should have received a copy of vPars version A.02(01), CD part # 5012-1925. If you do not have access to vPars version A.02(.01), the attachment to this letter explains how to request this CD. To install vPars version A.02(.01), the following steps should be followed: 1. Use the instructions noted above to determine which version of vPars is installed on your system with PA8700 processors: a. b. c. If vPars version A.02(.01) is installed, you do not have to take any action. If vPars version A.02.02 is installed but you are willing to wait for the vPars patch for this issue, you do not have to take any action. If vPars version A.02.02 is installed, and you wish to install and use vPars version A.02(.01), continue with the next steps.

First, remove vPars product version A.02.02: a. b. c. Login as root. Backup the vPars partition database file /stand/vpdb to avoid having to recreate your vPars configuration. Perform the following command for each virtual partition configured on your system: # /usr/sbin/swremove x autoreboot=true VirtualPartition Warning: Remove the vPars product only at the product level (VirtualPartition). Do NOT remove the vPars product at the bundle level (T1335AC or VPARSBASE). If the bundle is removed, recommended kernel patches will also be removed. Note: vPars version A.02(.01) will fail to install without first removing version A.02.02.
Next, install vPars product version A.02(.01). For full vPars installation details and considerations for your particular environment, please review the Installing and Managing HP-UX Virtual Partitions (vPars) manual, part # T1335-90018. The following steps are only provided as a basic guideline: a. b. Login as root. Install vPars A.02(.01) using either Software Distributor (SD-UX) or IgniteUX.

Restore your /stand/vpdb vPars configuration file during the installation process while in standalone mode and at the point where you would normally create the virtual partitions using the vparcreate command. Reboot your system consult the vPars installing manual for additional details.
