Service is what makes Compaq a leader
The IT industry is pretty much in agreement that the PC industry worldwide is losing impetus and those companies whose livelihoods depend on box dropping are facing a real crisis, says Jan Booyzen, Compaqs Global Services Director. Compaq long ago recognised the need to diversify by taking its hardware and software operations several steps further. As a result, it has developed a strong focus on the provision of IT services and solutions for its customers.

include high availability systems, networks and security, management and Outsourcing Services, storage and systems integration while on the hardware and software side, the company offers a number of customised solutions including CarePaq packaged services which allow customers to choose the level of support that suits their requirements. Compaq started its newly restructured Professional Services in South Africa about a year ago and since then, a number of projects are in the pipeline which could see the PS department mushroom overnight. Its primary markets are in the Telecommunications, Financial, Manufacturing and Retail sectors. I believe that Compaq is best positioned to be an IT product and service provider. Of its personnel worldwide, more than are service people. The company employs more Microsoft qualified engineers (about 15 000) than Microsoft itself and, while it is the second largest system integration company in the world, it is the only IT company to be awarded Microsofts Prime Integrator status which authorises it to roll out Windows NT and 2000 on a global basis.
The concept of offering services and solutions to customers is hardly new. However, for the IT industry it has become a matter of survival. Notwithstanding this, of course, by offering a range of complementary services, a company can go further towards achieving its goal of becoming the trusted IT advisor and partner to its customers by running their IT department, and consequently freeing them to focus on their core business. Compaq Global Services is the result of this re-focusing and now accounts for more than 25% to 30% of the companys revenue worldwide. Global services can be divided into two main areas Customer Services (CS) which provides a portfolio of managed services as well as handling break-fix warranties, spares and support; and Professional Services (PS) which provides FutureSourcing, Consulting and Systems Integration skills. Its expertise in service provision extends to a number of key areas in e-business, hardware, software, and IT Infrastructure Management. For example, its e-business solutions cover such concepts as Business Intelligence, Customer Relationship Management, Consulting, Ecommerce, Enterprise Applications, New Generation Networks and Knowledge Management. ompaq Computer is setting an industry milestone by increasing the capability of its Storage Area Networks (SANs) five-fold to 20 switches and 320 ports. StorageWorks SANs now allow customers to bridge the gap from SAN islands to single, centrally managed SANs providing design flexibility and seamless integration in heterogeneous computing environments. The delivery of large scale SAN capability is a significant step in the fulfilment of Compaq's Enterprise Network Storage Architecture (ENSA). Compaqs expanded SAN switch and port count in various server and storage array combinations, depending on enterprise-specific requirements, provides the flexibility to deliver up to 280TB of online, upgradeable, modular storage.
Compaq delivers large scale SANs
area networks with Compaq-defined SAN topologies demonstrates the continued maturation of storage area networks." Compaq offers a heterogeneous SAN Design Guide with two approaches to configuring SANs: > A portfolio of recommended SAN topologies that enable users to simplify their SAN installation. > A flexible custom-design using SAN fabric rules that allows customers to configure and modify their SAN to accommodate current needs as well as lay the foundation for future growth. We can give our enterprise customers the large SANs they need for a rapidlygrowing storage environment, said Kim Howlett, Storage Product Group, Compaq Computer. This large scale expansion allows users to extend their SAN to cost effectively meet the full demands of enterprise-class computing.
Extending SAN islands to Enterprisewide SANs Until now, customers configured large SANs as SAN islands. Enterprise-wide SANs join isolated storage islands together and establish a dedicated connection between storage elements and servers in one centrally managed, integrated infrastructure. StorageWorks SANs simplify the storage configurations and resources to multivendor servers and applications. "Many early Kim Howlett, Storage Product Group Compaq. SAN implementations were accomplished in tightly controlled environments with the aid of the supplier's professional services organisation," said John McArthur, Vice President of Storage Research at IDC. "Compaqs announcement of StorageWorks SAN design rules and large-scale storage
Tellumat, Enterprise Connection sign Compaq Storage deal
n yet another major deal this year, Enterprise Connection Cape have signed a R1 million Storage Area Network (SAN) deal with Tellumat. Martin Brandt, IS Executive for the Tellumat group comments, "Enterprise Connection spent considerable time and effort to carefully analyse our requirements and propose a tangible solution. We wanted to achieve a proficient and scalable storage architecture for our interoperable IP platforms in order to satisfy dynamic business needs. Their dedication in providing us with a cost-effective and competent data management strategy secured our
confidence in their approach." Tellumat, previously known as Plessey, is one of the leaders in the telecommunications and electronics industry in SA. Employing around staff with 650 networked computers, the company places a strong focus on the manufacture and adaptation of externally sourced international products to the requirements of the SA market. They not only provide technology in key niche areas, such as private switching communications, microwave radio equipment and avionics products and systems but also complement and enhance their products with a full spectrum of services that include project
management, network planning, maintenance and software support and facilities management. As Tellumat have experienced a large data growth over the last 18 months, Enterprise Connection was called in to analyse the company's existing infrastructure and data demands. Enterprise Connection's research resulted in the proposal of a SAN as a strategy to cater for Tellumat's existing and future data demands. Enterprise Connection Cape's GM, Johan de Villiers adds, "Tellumat had strict criteria on which prospective solution providers were evaluated. It was an honour to be chosen by them, considering the size of the vendor competition. Our relationship with Compaq and the high calibre of account management gave us the edge on this one. EC Cape has succeeded in building yet another blue-chip reference site in the Storage Arena in the Western Cape".
ompaq has named nine leading independent software vendors (ISVs) as business partners in the Compaq Zero Latency Enterprise (ZLE) initiative. Compaq is the first to create zero latency technology to meet customer demand for solutions that enable business to be conducted in real time. Driven by the Internet, real time computing requires that decisionmakers have a single, integrated view of the business - and their customers that is current up to the second.
ZLE brings real time to the Enterprise
Ross Altman, research director, Gartner, said, Information thats fresh has the most value. In a real time, zero latency enterprise, information is delivered to the right place at the right time for maximum business value. Altman continued, Companies are going to move to reduced latency environments, its just a question of when. The longer one waits, the worse it gets. The sooner an enterprise embraces and implements the concept of zero latency, the stronger its competitive position is likely to be. Grant McNee, Compaqs ZLE Business Solution Driver, said, The Internet business model has moved all of us to act and respond to our customers in real time. Compaq ZLE is the transformational technology that allows a business to truly enable a real time enterprise. McNee continued, "Integral to delivering ZLE are the strong partnerships with ISVs that provide advanced solutions technology, an understanding of customers business needs, and realworld experience. We will grow these partnerships and will add new ones to help build ZLE-enabled solutions across different industries.
Compaq said it has signed agreements with these vendors, the first software partners to be formally recognised as an integral part of the Compaq ZLE architecture. They are: Actional Corporation; Acxiom Corporation; Blaze Software, Inc.; Mercator Software; MicroStrategy Inc.; Protagona Worldwide, Inc.; SAS Institute Inc.; Savant Technologies, Inc.; and Trillium Software. Each ISV partner contributes valuable enabling technology to the base Compaq ZLE architecture, which forms the framework for market-specific Compaq ZLE solutions. ZLE is a transaction-oriented solution providing a single, integrated view of business and customer transactions as they occur, no matter where they occur in the enterprise, in real time. In a zero latency environment, the flow of inter-
Grant McNee, Compaqs ZLE Business Solution Driver. nal information is accelerated to the point where transactions are instantaneously propagated within the enterprise and can be acted upon in real time. Gartner, which originated the zero latency concept, forecasts that almost every successful business will have some form of ZLE infrastructure. Compaq is building ZLE solutions today aimed at the highly competitive telecommunications, finance, and retail markets where immediate insight into customer actions and business transactions offers a compelling advantage.

Worlds smallest Multimedia Projector
he new Compaq MP2800 Microportable Projector has been designed to simplify presentation logistics for mobile professionals. The MP2800 weighs just 1.4 kilograms and has a volume of just 1,937 cubic centimetres (18.06 x 6.89 x 22.13 cm). The new projector features magnesium casing that is stronger than plastic and lighter than aluminium, allowing it to withstand the rigours of business travel whilst remaining lightweight for ease of transport. Displaying 1024x768 XGA resolution at a brightness of 1000 lumens the MP2800 provides a sharper, brighter image than any projector currently available on the market in this size category. The days of carrying cumbersome presentation equipment around
are over, this is a great solution for the mobile professional, said Annika Fagerstrom, Commercial Personal Computing Group. The MP2800 has already proved extremely popular in the American market, and the advanced demand across the European region for such a product is very encouraging. The MP2800 is a small, lightweight, and powerful presentation tool that simplifies business computing and makes it much easier for the mobile professional to carry travel with a projector hassle-free. It is a dream come true for business travellers or anyone demanding computing and presentation technology that calls for powerful projection imaging.
Consolidation is the watchword for enterprise computing in the 21st century, says Tony Bogatie, Business Unit Manager, Industry Standard Server Group, at Compaq. Distributed servers are fast becoming a thing of the past as companies begin to realise the cost, security and management advantages of centralising their server infrastructures.
Stack em, Pack em and Rack em
Centralised Computing with Compaq DL Series Servers
Of course, with centralisation and the creation of the data centre comes the hefty cost per m2 of space. In a company with, say, 40 servers, this can amount to a huge sum as desk space is needed for each server, monitor and keyboard. Then, of course, issues such as security, server management and even ventilation, arise, all of which add considerably to costs. This is where server design plays an important part. Compaqs Proliant DL Series of density optimised servers are engineered for high volume, centralised deployment using a rack-mount layout that reduces overall space requirements while maintaining scalability and performance particularly for the ISP and ASP markets where rapid expansion often requires the addition of new servers with minimal downtime and enterprises looking to consolidate their distributed server infrastructure. The rack-mount server design was pioneered by Compaq which recognised the need for high density deployment. The DL Series spans multiple products to meet a broad spectrum of computing needs and can be integrated into a 42U rack. For example, at the entry level is the DL360 with its single and dual CPU option and up to two SCSI hard disks. The 1U chassis allows for the integration of up to 42 DL360s in a rack measuring only two meters in height. Other Compaq servers in the series include the 3U DL380, the 5U DL580 and the 7U Proliant 8500 (which offer multi-processor options up to eight CPUs and up to 16GB of memory). Compaq takes this concept of high density deployment a step further with centralised management and control as well as a sophisticated cable management system. A single monitor and keyboard can be used for visualising and controlling the entire rack of servers.
Andrew McNiven, Compaq Industry Standard Server Group. Even air flow to the server rack has been optimised to allow for installation without the need for expensive and often difficult to install air conditioning systems. Compaq also includes a set of tools specifically designed to make server deployment and management easier. For example, Compaq SmartStart is a deployment tool which enables users to configure Compaq hardware, load optimised drivers and assist with the installation of operating systems on Compaq servers. Compaq Insight Manager uses a web-based console to communicate with Compaq management agents across a broad spectrum of Compaq products. It is designed to reduce downtime by providing predictive alert and fault management and lower costs by centralising the management functions, providing IT departments with a virtual presence for total access to every Compaq component on the WAN. It also monitors the thresholds of hardware, utilisation of I/Os, NICs and processors to identify system bottlenecks and offers easy software version control and fast notification of failures via pager or e-mail. In addition, it simplifies the configuration and upgrading of hardware. Both of these tools are included free with Compaq servers, providing a value add that is unmatched in the IT industry.
