cheap Break easily This printer is unfortunately not the best around. While there are some positive aspects, the negatives far out weigh these.

The Hewlett Packard Deskjet 400 is a great inkjet printer. It can be noisy and the cartridges are very expensive.

Overview The HP Deskjet printer was introduced in February 1988. Since that time, more than 240 million Deskjet printers have been sold worldwide and continue to sell at a pace of more than 18 million printers per year.(1) The HP Deskjet has evolved from a 1-2 pages per minute (ppm), 14 pound printer to todays version, which boasts a speedy 36 ppm(2,3) and weighs in at only five pounds. Twenty years after its first introduction, the HP Deskjet continues to deliver on its original value proposition of quality, reliability, affordability and ease of use all while maintaining its leadership in the inkjet printing market. HP Deskjet 1200C and 1200C/PS with new HP 40 Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow ink cartridges Included pigment inks for richer black and color print quality and greater durability. Printing system offered up to 600 x 300-dpi output(5) for black text at a speed of up to 6 ppm. One full color page could be printed in up to 1-2 minutes per page on plain paper at up to 300 dpi.(4) The HP Deskjet 1200C was priced at $1,699.

HP Deskjet 310 and Deskwriter 310 with new HP 33 black inkjet print cartridges HPs second portable printing system featured up to 300dpi(4) monochrome output, speeds of up to 3-4 ppm, an optional color kit for full-color printing ($49) and an optional cut-sheet feeder. Both printers were priced at $379.

1994 January

HP announced the shipment of 5 million HP Deskjet products in 1993, nearly half of which had a color inkjet print cartridge as an option. HP Deskjet 520 and Deskwriter 520 Boasted improved features such as up to 600 x 300-dpi(5) for black text at speeds of up to 3 ppm. The system also included resolution enhancement technology (REt) for improved print quality. Both printers were priced at $365. HP Deskjet 560C and Deskwriter 560C The first printing systems to feature HP ColorSmart technology to intelligently analyze documents in the process of printing to provide the best color output. These systems
offered up to 600 x 300-dpi(5) black text with REt, as well as full-color text. Both were priced at $719. September HP Deskjet 540 and Deskwriter 540 These printing systems featured up to 600 x 300-dpi(5) monochrome output with REt at a speed of up to 3 ppm, and an optional color printing accessory for $49 that allowed for up to 300-dpi(4) color printing with ColorSmart at a speed of 1.5 minutes per page. Both printers were priced at $365. The new models replaced all previous color-capable and monochrome models. HP Deskjet 660C and Deskwriter 660C with new HP 29 black and 49 tricolor inkjet print cartridges These printing systems were the first to offer pigment-based black inks and dye-based color inks. They also offered up to 600 x 600-dpi(7) output for black text, up to 600 x 300-dpi output(5) for color printing and were able to print up to 4 ppm in black text and up to 1.5 ppm in color with ColorSmart. They contained both black and color ink cartridges and were priced at $599. HP Deskjet 850C and Deskjet 855C with new HP 45 black and 41 tricolor inkjet print cartridges The first implementation of HPs Color Resolution Enhancement technology (C-Ret), these printing systems had a print quality of up to 600 dpi(8) in black text with REt and up to 300 dpi(4) in color with C-REt. Print speeds were up to 6 ppm black text and up to 2 ppm color. The HP Deskjet 850C was priced at $618 and the 855C was priced at $623.

HP Deskjet 340 This printing system featured up to 600 x 300-dpi(5) print quality for black text at speeds of up to 3 ppm. Color printing was available with an HP Color Kit at a resolution of up to 300 dpi(4) and print speeds of up to 2 minutes per page. Priced at $365.

HP Deskjet 680C and Deskwriter 680C with new HP 29 black and 49 tricolor inkjet print cartridges The first HP printers to offer continuous-feed banner printing, these printers writing systems offered up to 600-dpi(8) print quality for black text and up to 600 x 300-dpi(5) color printing at speeds of up to 5 ppm for black text and up to 1.5 ppm for color. The HP Deskjet 400 had a small footprint and a fold-up paper tray, up to 600 x 300-dpi(5) black text output and up to 300-dpi color(4) output and speeds of up to 3 ppm in black and up to 2-3 minutes per page in color. HP Deskjet 870Cse Offered print speeds of up to 8 ppm for black text at up to 600 dpi(8) and up to 4 ppm in color at up to 600 x 300 dpi(5) with C-REt. Priced at $599. October HP DeskJet 690C with HP 29 black, 49 tri-color and new 16 photo inkjet print cartridges This printer was the first to offer optional HP Photo Kit and photo cartridge to produce photo-quality prints. HP launched its largest product introduction to date 158 consumer products, including: HP Deskjet 3550 Color Inkjet Printer The successor to the HP Deskjet 3420 with increased print speeds of up to 14 ppm in black and up to 10 ppm in color. The HP Deskjet 3550 belonged to a family of products that were designed for the cost-conscious consumer interested in a simple, reliable printer. Priced at $49. New HP Vivera inks delivered vivid, enduring black and color printing. High-capacity ink cartridges with innovative print head and nozzle design delivered a black speed of up to 30 ppm and a color speed of up to 20 ppm. The HP Deskjet 6940 included wired Ethernet printing and print sharing up with up to five computers, while the HP Deskjet 6980 included built-in networking and 802.11g wireless printing. How to Print

1. Lay out the page and choose the text, pictures, fonts, and colors from your software program (such as a word processor or drawing program). 2. Choose your print settings in the HP print settings box. To find the HP print settings box:
Once youre there, Choose print quality, paper size, and paper type on the Setup tab.

Try This.

a. Click File and then click Print.
Choose two-sided printing, orientation, and flip horizontal options on the Features tab.

While Youre Printing

Your printer will print at different speeds, depending on the complexity of the job and the print quality you have chosen. If you have lots of graphics and color in your document, it will take longer to print.

If something goes wrong

Sometimes, in spite of your best efforts, something goes wrong during printing. Maybe a sheet of paper jams in the printer or nothing happens at all. If the printer detects a problem, it displays a message on your screen. 3. Click OK in the Print box of your software program to start printing. The next time you want to print this document, you can use the Print button at the top of the screen in your software programsimply click it to print one copy using the same print settings. It takes a few moments for the printing to start, because the printer is receiving information from the computer.
If you notice that something is wrong, click the Troubleshooting tab in the HP Toolbox and follow the instructions on the screen. (See page 8 to find out how to get to the HP Toolbox.)

Guidelines to remember

The envelope slot supports only No. 10 or DL size envelopes. Make sure paper is loaded in the IN tray. Make sure the card guide is in the down position. Avoid shiny or embossed envelopes, or those that have clasps or windows. Avoid envelopes with thick, irregular, or curled edges or with areas that are wrinkled, torn, or otherwise damaged. Never load more than 20 envelopes at one time. Even up the envelopes before inserting them by tapping the short edge on a flat surface. Make sure the card guide is in the down position Avoid shiny or embossed envelopes, or those that have clasps or windows. Avoid envelopes with thick, irregular, or curled edges or with areas that are wrinkled, torn, or otherwise damaged. Getting Help When Things Go Wrong
When problems occur, the quickest way to find a solution is to use the troubleshooting feature in the HP Toolbox. With a few clicks of the mouse button, youll find your specific problem and details on how to fix it.
Double-click the HP Toolbox icon. Its on your desktop when you start your computer.

Solving Common Problems

The text or graphics are in the wrong place
Paper orientation. If the printing is positioned incorrectly on the page, make sure youve selected the correct orientation (Portrait or Landscape) on the Features tab of the HP print settings box. Alignment. If the color ink and black ink dont line up on the printed page, align the print cartridges. In the HP Toolbox, click the Printer Services tab, and then click Align the print cartridges. Paper Loading. If the printing is slanted or skewed, try reloading the paper.
OR Click the HP Toolbox icon in the taskbar. The icon is displayed in the taskbar when the HP Toolbox is open and youre printing.

Windows 3.1x

Double-click the HP Toolbox icon in the HP DeskJet Utilities group in the Program Manager.
Margin settings. If text is running off the edge of the page: Make sure the margins are set correctly in your software program. Make sure the elements in your document fit within the printable area of the page. Make sure youve selected the right paper size on the Setup tab of the HP print settings box.

The print quality is poor
Cartridges. If ink is smearing, streaking, or is splotchy: You might need to clean the print cartridges. See the HP Toolbox for instructions. You might need to replace the print cartridges. See the HP Toolbox for instructions. Paper. If the printing is faded or the colors are dull or bleeding into each other, make sure youre using paper intended for inkjet printers and that youve loaded the paper print side down. Ink. You can control the amount of ink on the page by changing the Print Quality (on the Setup tab of the HP print settings box).
Something on the page is wrong or missing
Margin settings. If the printing is cut off around the edges, check your software application: The correct margins are set. The elements are scaled correctly. Colors. If the colors are wrong or missing Clean your tri-color print cartridge. In the HP Toolbox, click the Printer Services tab, and then click Clean the print cartridges. Replace the tri-color print cartridge.See the online help for instructions. Clear the Print in Grayscale option on the Color tab of the HP print settings box. Communications. If meaningless characters are printing on your page, the computer might have lost communication with your printer. Try turning your computer and printer off and then turn them on again. If the problem persists, make sure all cables are plugged in tightly.

A blank page came out of the printer
Tape. Make sure youve removed the protective pieces of tape on the print cartridges. Default printer. Make sure youve selected the HP DeskJet 610C Series printer as the default printer. To check your default printer, click the Troubleshooting tab in the HP Toolbox, and then click A blank page came out. Follow the instructions under Wrong printer selected to make sure your printer is selected as the current or default printer. Ink. You might have run out of ink. Replace the cartridges.
No page came out of the printer
Be patient. Complex documents, such as color photographs, take a while to print. Check the power light; if its blinking, the printer is processing information. Power. Make sure the printer is on (the power light on the front of your printer should be on) and that all connections are firm. Cover. Make sure the top cover of the printer is closed. Paper. Make sure you put the paper in the lower (IN) tray correctly. Print cartridges. Make sure both print cartridge cradles contain properly installed cartridges with the correct HP part number.

What the Buttons and Lights Do
The Resume and Power buttons and lights are on the front of the printer. In general, the lights indicate when the printer is operating correctly and when it needs attention from you. The buttons are used to control the printer.
When these lights are. Turned off and Steadily lit and Steadily lit and Turned off Turned off Blinking You need to. Press Power to turn on the printer.
Send a document to the printer. The printer is in the ready-to-print state. If you just installed a print cartridge, make sure the cartridge is securely snapped into the printer with the arrow aligned with the dots on the top of the print cartridge cradle. Close the top cover of the printer if it is open. Check the lower (IN) tray to make sure it contains paper and that the paper is correctly loaded in the tray. Press Resume to clear the error condition. Then check your computer screen for any reported error message and corrective action instructions. No action required. This indicates that either the computer is sending a document to the printer or that the printer is currently busy printing a document. Press Power to turn off the printer. At the computer, cancel any documents awaiting printing. Press Power again to turn on the printer. See the Troubleshooting tab in the HP Toolbox. A problem exists with your printer.

A printer driver is a program that allows you to control print settings from within your word processor, spreadsheet, or other software program.
Installing the HP DeskJet Control Panel
Using the right MS-DOS printer driver
Printer drivers are supplied by the manufacturers of MS-DOS software programs. Whenever possible, use the one designed specifically for the HP DeskJet 610C Series printers. However, if one isnt available, you can get satisfactory results using one of the drivers listed below. If you are using a program thats not listed, contact the manufacturer of the software program to get a printer driver that is compatible with your new printer.

Cleaning the print cartridges

Clean the print cartridges when you notice that lines or dots are missing from your printed text and graphics. 1. At the MS-DOS command line, type DJCP and press ENTER. The Control Panel appears. 2. Click Clean Print Cartridge, then follow the instructions on the screen.
Installing a MS-DOS printer driver
Follow the instructions supplied by the software manufacturer. Contact them if you have any questions or concerns about the performance of your printer when using one of their drivers.
Aligning the print cartridges
Align the print cartridges when you notice that color ink does not properly line up with black ink. 1. At the MS-DOS command line, type DJCP and press ENTER. The Control Panel appears. 2. Click Align Print Cartridge, then follow the instructions on the screen.
Using the HP DeskJet Control Panel for MS-DOS
Use the HP DeskJet Control Panel to choose print settings that might not be available from some MS-DOS programs, or if you cant get a printer driver that works with your software program.

However, if printer failure or damage is attributable to the use of a non-HP or refilled ink cartridge, HP will charge its standard time and materials charges to service the printer for the particular failure or damage. If HP receives, during the applicable warranty period, notice of a defect in any software, media, or ink cartridge product which is covered by HPs warranty, HP shall replace the defective product. If HP receives, during the applicable warranty period, notice of a defect in any hardware product which is covered by HPs warranty, HP shall either repair or replace the defective product, at HPs option. If HP is unable to repair or replace, as applicable, a defective product which is covered by HPs warranty, HP shall, within a reasonable time after being notified of the defect, refund the purchase price for the product. HP shall have no obligation to repair, replace, or refund until the customer returns the defective product to HP. Any replacement product may be either new or like-new, provided that it has functionality at least equal to that of the product being replaced. HPs limited warranty is valid in any country where the covered HP product is distributed by HP except for the Middle-East, Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, and Frances Departments dOutre-Mer; for those excepted areas, the warranty is valid only in the country of purchase. Contracts for additional warranty services, such as on-site service, may be available from any authorized HP service facility in countries where the product is distributed by HP or by an authorized importer. TO THE EXTENT ALLOWED BY LOCAL LAW, NEITHER HP NOR ITS THIRD PARTY SUPPLIERS MAKE ANY OTHER WARRANTY OR CONDITION OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, WITH RESPECT TO THE HP PRODUCTS, AND SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIM THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF MERCHANTABILITY, SATISFACTORY QUALITY, AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

D. Local Law

1. This Warranty Statement gives the customer specific legal rights. The customer may also have other rights which vary from state to state in the United States, from province to province in Canada, and from country to country elsewhere in the world. 2. To the extent that this Warranty Statement is inconsistent with local law, this Warranty Statement shall be deemed modified to be consistent with such local law. Under such local law, certain disclaimers and limitations of this Warranty Statement may not apply to the customer. For example, some states in the United States, as well as some governments outside the United States (including provinces in Canada), may: a. Preclude the disclaimers and limitations in this Warranty Statement from limiting the statutory rights of a consumer (e.g., the United Kingdom); b. Otherwise restrict the ability of a manufacturer to enforce such disclaimers or limitations; or c. Grant the customer additional warranty rights, specify the duration of implied warranties which the manufacturer cannot disclaim, or not allow limitations on the duration of implied warranties. 3. FOR CONSUMER TRANSACTIONS IN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND, THE TERMS IN THIS WARRANTY STATEMENT, EXCEPT TO THE EXTENT LAWFULLY PERMITTED, DO NOT EXCLUDE, RESTRICT, OR MODIFY, AND ARE IN ADDITION TO, THE MANDATORY STATUTORY RIGHTS APPLICABLE TO THE SALE OF HP PRODUCTS TO SUCH CUSTOMERS.

HP Year 2000 Warranty

Subject to all of the terms and limitations of the HP Limited Warranty Statement stated above, HP warrants that this HP Product will be able to accurately process date data (including, but not limited to, calculating, comparing, and sequencing) from, into, and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and the years 1999 and 2000, including leap year calculations, when used in accordance with the Product documentation provided by HP (including any instructions for installing patches or upgrades), provided that all other products (e.g., hardware, software, firmware) used in combination with such HP Product(s) properly exchange date data with it. The duration of the Year 2000 warranty extends through January 31, 2001.
