Key Features
HP JetDirect Printer Installer for UNIX offers a diverse set of features, including HP JetDirect print server IP parameter configuration. When configuring IP parameters on network devices, always consult with your network administrator.
IP Parameter Configuration Methods
This section describes common IP configuration methods used with HP JetDirect print servers.
Early functionality of HP JetDirect print server products included BootP. BootP is a server-based process that responds to initializing IP nodes on a network, including HP JetDirect print servers, and provides IP parameters to complete the nodes configuration. These parameters are IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and others. BootP has to be managed at a remote system, like UNIX, and is not typically used when there are only a few IP nodes in need of parameter configuration. See HP documentation as well as operating system-specific documentation regarding BootP.
Printer Control Panel Configuration
Most HP printers with a control panel display allow the configuration of internal HP JetDirect print servers. The user simply interacts with the MIO or EIO through the printers control panel menu and configures the IP parameters on the HP JetDirect print server. The parameters are saved to the HP JetDirect server, and if set correctly, the device will communicate through the network. External HP JetDirect print servers do not have a control panel option. See HP JetDirect-specific and printer-specific documentation regarding configuration through the printers control panel.
Telnet
Shortly after HP JetDirect print server products were introduced, a new IP configuration path was available. Telnet is part of the IP suite of protocols and is used to interactively communicate from one node to another through a network. A telnet session with HP JetDirect print servers can be started from a workstation that provides telnet functionality. IP parameter configuration and changes can be saved on the HP JetDirect print server within a telnet session. See HP documentation regarding IP configuration through telnet and HP JetDirect firmware versions with telnet support.
Like BootP, DHCP is a server-based process through which HP JetDirect print servers can obtain IP parameter configuration upon power-cycle or bootup. DHCP is more robust and flexible than BootP. See specific HP JetDirect product information regarding firmware versions with DHCP support. Also, see operating system-specific documentation regarding DHCP services. The HP JetDirect Printer Installer for UNIX does not provide DHCP management.
ARP-gleaning
One of the newer configuration methods implemented in the HP JetDirect print server is setting the IP Address locally using arp-gleaning. This configuration method gives users the ability to add both the LAN hardware address and a valid IP address to the arp table on a workstation or server. Then, by pinging that IP address, the HP JetDirect print server will automatically glean or adopt the IP address. A telnet session is then used to configure the additional IP parameters. See specific HP JetDirect product information regarding firmware versions with arp-gleaning configuration support. (In general, firmware versions x.08.xx or greater are required. However, HP JetDirect 400N print servers do not support arp-gleaning regardless of firmware version.)
Using the HP JetDirect Printer Installer for UNIX
When running the HP JetDirect Printer Configuration Utility for UNIX, the JetDirect Configuration menu provides traditional BootP configuration choices (if BootP services are installed) as well as new HP JetDirect print server configuration options. Unlike BootP, these new options will statically configure IP parameters to the HP JetDirect print server. Static configuration refers to configuring the HP JetDirect print server with IP parameters that are maintained over a power-cycle. The new menu options include menu options 4 and 5.
Menu option 4, set IP address locally
This option allows you to configure the IP parameters directly onto the HP JetDirect print server. It uses an arp-gleaning feature to assign the IP address on newer HP JetDirect print servers, or the default address on older devices. Telnet can then be used to complete additional IP configuration parameters for both newer and older types of HP JetDirect print servers. This option should only be used with HP JetDirect print servers that:
s s s s
have not been configured, have been powered on for five or more minutes, have been configured with the default IP address of 192.0.0.192. are on the same physical hardware segment as the UNIX system on which the HP JetDirect Printer Installer for UNIX is running.
If you would like to configure an HP JetDirect server that has already been configured or is communicating on a network, or if you would like to communicate with HP JetDirect print servers on other networks, refer to Menu option 5, Open Telnet Session to HP JetDirect Card.)
Follow these steps to configure your HP JetDirect print server: 1. Type "hppi" at the command prompt to run the HP JetDirect Printer Installer Utility for UNIX. 2. Select "2) JetDirect Configuration". 3. Select "4) Set IP Address Locally". 4. Enter the LAN Hardware (MAC) address for the HP JetDirect print server. This address resides on the print server and can be obtained by printing a JetDirect configuration page. (For HP JetDirect external print servers, this address is also provided on a lable attached to the print server.)
5. Enter the new IP address that will be configured on the HP JetDirect print server. This address should be an unused IP address. Always check with a network administrator when assigning new IP addresses. 6. Enter the new hostname that you would like to assign to the HP JetDirect print server. This hostname should not be used on the network for any other IP address. 7. The configuration software will now check the network for the IP address and hostname. At this point, the software will begin checking a few items related to the IP address and hostname that you have entered. First, it checks for usage of that IP address on the network. If the address is in use, it will report an error and will not continue. Next, it looks for the presence of the hostname in the local /etc/hosts file. If the name does not exist in the hosts file, it will ask if you want to add an entry.
If the IP and hostnames entries reside within a DNS or other name service, a hostname entry should not be added to the /etc/hosts file. Consult network administration personnel with regard to hostname and name services on your network.
8. After the software confirms the IP address and hostname are usable, it will attempt to configure the HP JetDirect print server through the arpgleaning method described earlier. If the arp-gleaning method is not successful, the software will attempt a telnet connection to the default IP address of 192.0.0.192. Reasons for arp-gleaning failures might be due to old firmware revision. Be sure the firmware revision is x.08.xx or greater. (Note: HP JetDirect 400N printer servers do not support arp-gleaning regardless of the firmware revision).
9. Once an IP address has been successfully configured on the HP JetDirect print server, the software will begin a telnet session for additional IP parameter configuration. Use the "?" key to determine how to configure specific parameters (such as a subnet-mask or defaultgateway). Type "quit" to save the changes when finished. For information regarding IP parameters on your network, consult your network administrator.
10. The IP parameters should now be configured on the HP JetDirect print server. You may now add the print destination to the UNIX spooler.
Menu option 5, Open Telnet Session to HP JetDirect Card
This option, Open Telnet Session to HP JetDirect Card, is essentially the same as using telnet directly. Using this feature, you can modify IP addresses and other parameters that have already been configured on a HP JetDirect print server. In addition, you can communicate with HP JetDirect print servers on other networks, providing the print server is properly configured and a communication path exists. 1. Run the HP JetDirect Printer Installer Utility for UNIX by typing "hppi" at the command prompt. 2. Select "2) JetDirect Configuration". 3. Select "5) Open Telnet Session with HP JetDirect Card". 4. Enter the IP address or IP hostname. 5. A telnet session should now open between you and the HP JetDirect print server. 6. Use the "?" key to help in configuring IP parameters. 7. Use the "/" key to review configuration settings. 8. Type "quit" to save the changes and quit the telnet session. 9. The IP parameters should now be configured on the HP JetDirect print server. You may now add the print destination to the UNIX spooler.
