HP Tablet PC helps broker impress clients, boost sales
Being able to actually have the client sign right on the screen is the highlight of the HP Tablet PC for me. I recently did two contracts in a day and didnt have to go to the office for either. Mike Hyles RE/MAX 1st Choice
Real estate agents dont make any sales sitting in their offices, says Mike Hyles, the owner and lead broker of the RE/MAX 1st Choice agency in Pleasanton, California. By spending an estimated 90 percent of his time away from his desk and with clients, Hyles has gained a place among RE/MAXs top 15 brokers worldwide in agent productivity. A corporate pilot in addition to selling real estate for 16 years, Hyles attributes his real estate success, in part, to the technology he uses. If you dont have new technolo gy, he says, you are going to get left behind. Among Hyless newest technology is the HP Compaq tc4200 Tablet PC. He uses it throughout the selling cycle: for calling up documents and data whenever theyre needed, creating brochures around photos from his HP Photosmart digital camera and printing them on his HP Deskjet Mobile Printer, getting customer signatures on the fly, sending or receiving documents via fax, even making Internet phone calls. Equipped with his HP Tablet PC, Hyles is as mobile and flexible as he needs to be. Whether hes in his car or his Citation Jet, showing a house or in a distant city at a real estate conference, he can use his Tablet PC, a wireless Evolution Data Optimized card and wireless wide area network (WAN) broadband service to access his e-mail or MLS listings via the Internet. Wireless WAN service is
available in many large cities and frees users from search ing for local area network (LAN) hotspots to make their connection. A good first impression When Hyles visits homeowners who are looking for an agent to list their property, he photographs the house on the way to the front door, slips the cameras memory card into the Tablet PC and then quickly inserts the photos in stored generic marketing flyers he created using HP Real Estate Marketing Assistant software. Near the end of his presentation, he opens the Tablet PC and asks the owners which of the flyers they prefer. When they start picking out the themes, he says, the listing is secure. But hes not finished. Next he transmits their selected flyer to his Bluetooth-equipped HP Deskjet 460cb Mobile Printer and prints a working copy, which he and the owners tailor until it accurately represents the property. The purpose is just to get them to be part of the presenta tion, he explains, as well as convince them that this guy has it together! The HP Tablet PC also looks the part. Similar at first glance to a standard laptop PC with built-in keyboard and hinged display screen, it converts to jot-and-sign tablet mode simply by swinging the screen all the way
over. The HP Tablet PC has a lot of wow! factor, espe cially with clients, Hyles says, and you dont have to be a computer geek to understand how to use it. Built to boost sales In addition to having all the capabilities of a notebook PC including Internet searches, word processing and wire less e-mail the HP Tablet PCs voice- and handwriting-recognition, drawing and fax features let him work faster and be more productive. With the HP Tablet PC and Adobe Acrobat 7.0, a decision to make an offer can be executed and signed on the spot before its faxed or e-mailed to the other relevant parties. Being able to actually have the client sign right on the screen is the highlight of the HP Tablet PC for me, Hyles says. Previously, after printing a contract or offer sheet that needed to be signed by the customer, I either had to go back to the office or find a store to make copies, fax the paperwork to all of the necessary parties and then get a signed copy back to the prospective buyer, he says. To do all that, I probably would only be able to handle one client per day. I recently did two contracts in a day and didnt have to go to the office for either. Similarly, when discussing a potential listing with an owner, Hyles no longer takes printouts of the two dozen or more disclosure forms required in California. Instead, he stores them on the Tablet PC, from which he can make any necessary additions, get the documents signed and then wirelessly print them or simply e-mail them to the owner. Awesome battery life helps keeps Hyles productive on the road. With the optional travel battery I dont worry about the Tablet PC running out of power when I need it most. Help from other IT tools Hyles uses the Tablet PCs built-in microphone to store spo ken notes and for making long distance calls using the Skype Internet phone service. He plans to use the micro phone more often to create e-mail, too. His HP Photosmart digital camera also helps Hyles to sell. When out-of-town buyers spend several days in the Pleasanton area in search of a new home, he provides them an HP digital camera to photograph home features they like and then prints the photos for them. The photos they take help reveal the house they prefer, so he is happy to let them keep the camera. Soon Hyles plans to purchase the HP Photosmart R927 Digital Camera. The size is remarkably small for an 8.2-megapixel camera, Hyles says. An optional wire less camera dock will allow me to transfer pictures right from the camera to my Tablet PC and then to my website. I also like the cameras built-in editing tools for creating panoramas.

Back at the office, Hyles uses the Tablet PC in meetings with customers. Slipping it into an HP docking station, he shows his presentations to customers on an HP 23-inch flat-panel monitor. In the next few months he wants to add an HP Pavilion PL5000N TV with 50-inch plasma screen for truly eye-popping effect. In-office printing of high-end marketing collateral is done with the HP LaserJet 5550 printer. It can print up to 27 color pages per minute and handle paper sizes up to 11 x 17 inches. Anyone who isnt using a color printer right now to do their marketing materials just hasnt looked at the quality and affordability, Hyles says.
Tablet PC takes off His HP Tablet PC is also by his side when he flies. While waiting for passengers to board in Kansas City, I was able to wirelessly e-mail a contract to a client from the cockpit, he says. When we arrived at our destination, I logged on again and e-mailed the signed contract to the listing agent, and we got the deal accepted. The first Tablet PC I got from HP two years ago revolutionized how I thought about being mobile, Hyles says. The new HP Tablet PC is even more effective at helping me be productive.
