A Smart, Fast MFP

he HP LaserJet 3330mfp ($700 street) gets things right. Built around a 15-page-per-minute (ppm) monochrome laser married to a 600-pixel-per-inch (ppi) optical scanner, this multifunction printer handles printing, copying, scanning (to a file, e-mail, the included OCR module, or elsewhere), and faxing. The unit provides a 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF) for scanning stacks of pages and a flatbed for items that you cant run through the ADF. You can copy, fax, or initiate scans from control software on your computer, or you can use the controls on the printers front panel to make copies or send a fax, with no PC needed. Getting things right also means offering something extra. High on the list is the 3330mfps ability to share a line with a fax machine or phone. Tell the setup program that
theres an answering machine on the same line and the routine sets the options so the 3330mfp will wait for five rings, by which time the answering machine will have picked up. As soon as the answering machine or a person answers, the printer picks up also and listens for a fax tone. If there is one, the unit responds to receive the fax. This feature, which worked as promised on our tests, lets you get by with one less phone line, which can save more than the price of the printer over its lifetime. The unit also produced good to excellent quality for scanned photos and excellent quality for printing graphics and text at the default resolution (600-by-1,200 dpi). We timed a

DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific, a subsidiary of one of the worlds leading automotive companies, imports, wholesales and retails a range of passenger cars and commercial vehicles for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific islands. As a growing company, it sought to optimise business efficiencies by consolidating and managing its imaging and printing infrastructure. Search for Business Value As a growing company, DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific sought to optimise business efficiencies. But to do so, the company had to optimise its imaging and printing infrastructure, which then comprised a large fleet of mostly analog and ageing devices in 11 sites across Australia.
We wanted to make sure we get the maximum value out of every dollar we spend, said Craig Robinson, the companys Chief Information Officer and Group Treasurer. Given our large print volume and reliance on printing devices, looking at optimising our imaging and printing environment naturally became a part of business improvement and continuity.
Simplified Infrastructure When approached, HP packaged a comprehensive solution under the HP Pay per use service covering audit, design, delivery, leasing and management of the new output fleet. To start, the HP team looked at simplifying the entire imaging and printing infrastructure at DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific. Analysing workgroup requirements, workflow and office structure, as well as 12 months of output data, the team determined the most appropriate and right-size printers throughout the office. The team also surveyed users to find out specific business-critical printing requirements and other situations that required more personal or dedicated printing support.
Users appear to be very satisfied and from a management perspective, HPs solution has given us excellent business value.
Subsequently, HP and DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific developed the idea of kiosk printing where a group of users would share imaging and printing facilities through a network. Kiosks were introduced at centrally or strategically located sites within the offices and equipped with monochrome and colour devices for highvolume and high-end group printing. The consolidation of the fleet through introducing kiosks would provide the company with economies of scale without disrupting normal business significantly. HP also addressed specific needs such as distributed print, printing from legacy mainframe applications, and other specialist printing needs. In addition, devices had to be provided to support kiosk printers during maintenance or downtimes. Significant Benefits HP quickly demonstrated its experience in the area and showed us how we could achieve significant cost benefits and control, Robinson commented, estimating annual cost savings of in excess of 15 per cent in imaging and printing. From a fleet of 123 devices previously, the company now has just 41 devices working more efficiently. HP, as a single point of contact, would take care of maintenance,

future upgrades and provide DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific with a simplified consolidated bill and detailed reports on its imaging and printing costs. Another challenge had been to reduce the companys reliance on pre-printed forms specific printers. The new fleet of devices is now capable of integrating with a Server Based Forms Printing Solution, integrating business forms from a variety of business accounting platforms into one simplified package. HP has worked extensively with DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific and third party providers to develop this solution. Further cost savings will be enjoyed by reducing the need to engage third parties to print forms and decommissioning of form specific printers. The HP solution also included remote monitoring of the printers, which is improving service and response rates. All kiosk printers were networked and monitored using software tools like HP Web Jetadmin and HP Managed Print Portal, in order for problems to be addressed by the help desk immediately. The close tracking of the entire fleet allowed management to review usage by site, building and device, providing a higher level of control than before.
