HP takes aim at small to medium-sized businesses with their ProLiant ML350 G6. This way and using the HP Raid utility during setup (which is included) you can literally configure your drives to behave in any way possible.

Good but fan very noisy As the other reviewer says the fan on this is very noisy - disappointing as I bought it to use with a media PC in the lounge. Iomega Ultra Max 4tb Looking forward to a new storage capability I was shocked to find it was nothing of the sort just 3.

Overview
HP ProLiant DL380 G4 Storage Server

Introduction

The HP ProLiant DL380 G4 Storage Server is a network attached storage (NAS) solution with multi-protocol file support and storage management for enterprise and workgroup environments. The ProLiant DL380 G4 Storage Server offers both appliance and NAS/SAN fusion storage solutions that offer ease of installation and management features that reduce overall total cost of ownership (TCO). The ProLiant DL380 G4 Storage Server is ideal for customers with limited IT resources who require quick, simple, rapidly deployable, flexible storage and who need remote manageability. The ProLiant DL380 G4 Storage Server uses Microsoft's Windows Storage Server 2003 Release 2 (WSS 2003 R2) operating system which adds increased storage management functionality, increased data protection, performance enhancements and print services allowing customers to take control of their growing storage needs. Plus, it comes with HP Global Services, providing cost-effective support to ensure continuous availability. HP ProLiant DL380 G4 Storage Server comes in four configurations: a Base, 1.2TB SCSI, 1TB SATA and SAN storage model.

What's New

Improved productivity, more robust storage management and simple branch office integration with new Windows Storage Server 2003 Release 2 version of the operating system Easier to use, HP enhanced Microsoft Management Console - based User Interface

What Is NAS?

HP uses the Storage Server product name to describe its Network Attached Storage (NAS) solutions NAS solutions are specialized file-serving devices that provide support for heterogeneous files in a highcapacity package. NAS solutions also provide specific features to simplify the tasks and reduce the resources associated with data storage and management. The objective of NAS technology is to simplify manageability and improve data access to clients and applications. A NAS solution will generally provide network accessible storage to a mix of clients and servers running different operating systems. Capacity Up to 56 TB max capacity with all SCSI HDDs Up to 80TB max capacity with all SATA HDDs Max capacity based on connection of up to 13 MSA30s (SCSI) enclosures fully populated with 300GB SCSI HDDs or 13 MSA20 (SATA) enclosures fully populated with 500GB SATA HDDs Virtually Limitless on the SAN storage model (actual capacity varies based on storage capacity available in the HP-based SAN) For ease of use making it possible to manage all NAS functions from a central location or anywhere with Internet access capabilities. For environments that have a desire to consolidate storage and servers and get the best return on storage investment. Incremental point in time copies that are flexibly scheduled throughout the day. An additional level of data availability that provides easy restoration of data without having the access tape, with limited utilization of time and space (Microsoft Shadow Copy).

Step 9- add cluster kit (SAN Storage model only)
Storage Server Cluster Kit ProLiant Storage Server Cluster Kit NOTE: Windows Storage Server 2003 clusters can include up to eight nodes. One ProLiant Storage Server Cluster Kit (PN 331474-B21) is required for each node in a cluster. 331474-B21

Step 10 - add host base data replication
HP OpenView Storage Mirroring (SM) is an ideal entry host-based software product for IP networks. SM does not require high bandwidth Fibre Channel networks, high capacity replication and zero down time service levels. Storage Mirroring provides near real-time full application or file recovery up to the last byte replication. SM is an excellent choice for low bandwidth; low storage volume changes and meets business recovery goals within tens of minutes or hours. The immediate return on investment is realized in the reduced management cost associated with branch or small offices networks. Product Highlights: High availability with Microsoft Windows 2000/NT/2003servers Application aware and supported with Exchange, SQL and Oracle Host-based remote storage copy with TCP/IP networks Data distribution one-to-many or 'fan-out' to multiple destinations Data migration utility for transferring large data projects Centralize backup, data protection and recovery operations Built in scheduler for off hours replication Built in network bandwidth utilization management Disaster recovery between source and destination failover sites Powered by NSI Software's Double-Take patented 'Sequential Transfer Asynchronous Replication' technology Sequential transfer maintains write sequential across multiple files for data integrity Asynchronous replication allows hosts to continue processing for maximum performance HP OpenView Storage Mirroring v4.4.2 Media Kit HP OpenView Storage Mirroring NAS Edition LTU 1 HP OpenView Storage Mirroring NAS Edition LTU 10 NOTE: For more information go to the HP OpenView Storage Mirroring website at: http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storage/software/sm/index.html

Installing the server into the rack
CAUTION: Always install the heaviest item first, and continue to populate the rack from the bottom to top. 1. Install the server and cable management arm. See the installation instructions that ship with the 2U Quick Deploy Rail System. If you chose not to install the cable management arm, install the power cord anchor to the server. IMPORTANT: When using cable management arm components, ensure that there is enough slack in each of the cables to prevent damage to the cables when the server is extended from the rack. If using the power cord anchor, ensure that there is enough slack in the power cord so that the redundant power supply can be removed without disconnecting the power cord from the primary power supply. 2. Install the MSA cables, as shown, and any peripheral devices.

Technical specifications

Full description

The HP ProLiant DL380 G4 Data Protection Storage Server is a network attached storage (NAS) appliance that utilizes Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 (DPM) to provide rapid & reliable recovery, near continuous data protection, and operational simplicity for disk-based backup of Windows file servers in an Active Directory domain. Disk based backup and simple end-user file recovery deliver a low total cost of ownership. As a member of the Windows Server System Manager family, DPM has been designed to optimize disk-based backup and recovery of Windows file servers and is the fastest and most cost effective method to recover file data lost to user error or equipment corruption. HP has worked closely with Microsoft on DPM and as such, ProLiant Data Protection Storage Servers have been optimized to deliver simplicity without compromise, resulting in a solution that is cost effective and easy to implement while providing immediate business value. Data Protection Storage Servers complement existing IT data protection infrastructures and are non-disruptive to IT environments. They can be extended further into the data protection value chain through optional SCSI interface and tape backup software to deliver a disk-to-disk-to-tape data protection framework.
