Good but fan very noisy As the other reviewer says the fan on this is very noisy - disappointing as I bought it to use with a media PC in the lounge. Poor for MAC OSX Bought this item a little while ago as a Time Machine external drive for my Mac Mini with OSX. Although the drive is firewire. Iomega Ultra Max 4tb Looking forward to a new storage capability I was shocked to find it was nothing of the sort just 3.

This server runs quiet and energy efficient compared to older generations of HP servers. Case locks in two places and is very sturdy Clean build, case and hardware are designed to max air flow. Easily expandable This thing is heavy.

HP ProLiant DL380 G4 Storage Server

Introduction

The HP ProLiant DL380 G4 Storage Server is a network attached storage (NAS) solution with multi-protocol file support and storage management for enterprise and workgroup environments. The ProLiant DL380 G4 Storage Server offers both appliance and NAS/SAN fusion storage solutions that offer ease of installation and management features that reduce overall total cost of ownership (TCO). The ProLiant DL380 G4 Storage Server is ideal for customers with limited IT resources who require quick, simple, rapidly deployable, flexible storage and who need remote manageability. The ProLiant DL380 G4 Storage Server uses Microsoft's Windows Storage Server 2003 Release 2 (WSS 2003 R2) operating system which adds increased storage management functionality, increased data protection, performance enhancements and print services allowing customers to take control of their growing storage needs. Plus, it comes with HP Global Services, providing cost-effective support to ensure continuous availability. HP ProLiant DL380 G4 Storage Server comes in four configurations: a Base, 1.2TB SCSI, 1TB SATA and SAN storage model.

What's New

Improved productivity, more robust storage management and simple branch office integration with new Windows Storage Server 2003 Release 2 version of the operating system Easier to use, HP enhanced Microsoft Management Console - based User Interface

What Is NAS?

HP uses the Storage Server product name to describe its Network Attached Storage (NAS) solutions NAS solutions are specialized file-serving devices that provide support for heterogeneous files in a highcapacity package. NAS solutions also provide specific features to simplify the tasks and reduce the resources associated with data storage and management. The objective of NAS technology is to simplify manageability and improve data access to clients and applications. A NAS solution will generally provide network accessible storage to a mix of clients and servers running different operating systems. Capacity Up to 56 TB max capacity with all SCSI HDDs Up to 80TB max capacity with all SATA HDDs Max capacity based on connection of up to 13 MSA30s (SCSI) enclosures fully populated with 300GB SCSI HDDs or 13 MSA20 (SATA) enclosures fully populated with 500GB SATA HDDs Virtually Limitless on the SAN storage model (actual capacity varies based on storage capacity available in the HP-based SAN) For ease of use making it possible to manage all NAS functions from a central location or anywhere with Internet access capabilities. For environments that have a desire to consolidate storage and servers and get the best return on storage investment. Incremental point in time copies that are flexibly scheduled throughout the day. An additional level of data availability that provides easy restoration of data without having the access tape, with limited utilization of time and space (Microsoft Shadow Copy).

HP ProLiant Storage Servers and third-party storage arrays/SAN interoperability statement HP acknowledges that some third party storage arrays/SAN environments have been successfully tested for interoperability with the HP ProLiant Storage Server or HP StorageWorks NAS products. HP will provide support for the HP ProLiant Storage Servers or HP StorageWorks NAS products when connected to third-party storage arrays, but HP will not provide support on third party storage arrays/SAN unless specifically called out in an HP Support contract. HP may support the third party SAN environment attached to both the HP ProLiant Storage Servers or the HP StorageWorks NAS products when specifically under contract with HP, but that SAN coverage does not extend to supporting the SAN connectivity of the third-party array. If a customer calls HP Services and the problem is determined to be caused by a third-party storage array or the storage arrays' connectivity into a non-HP supported SAN, the customer will be directed to contact the third-party storage array supplier for support. Please refer to the third-party supplier for information relating to specific support of their storage arrays with Windows Storage Server 2003 platforms.

HP hardware support services
HP Instant Support Enterprise Edition (ISEE) provides proactive remote monitoring, diagnostics, and troubleshooting to help you enhance the availability of your servers, as well as storage and network devices. The ISEE software is located on the storage server in the c:\hpnas\components\ISEE folder. For more information, go to the HP web site: http://h20219.www2.hp.com/services/cache/ 10707-0-0-225-121.aspx HP Services provides service tools that notify you when a signicant system event has or will occur. These tools, WEBES System Event Analyzer (SEA) and OSEM, are used both as part of the ISEE remote service offering and as standalone tools to HP service customers. They are designed to send a notication only when an event or series of events has occurred that require service action. They are not intended to be real-time system state monitors
that trigger with every event. Most system components have the capability of sending hundreds of state events during normal operation. SEA and OSEM are designed to lter these component events and only notify customers and/or HP Services when action needs to be taken to resolve or prevent an outage. As designed they will not report all events. Other utilities are available to monitor real time system state. The software is located on the storage server in the c:\hpnas\components\ISEE\OSEM and c:\hpnas\components\ISEE\WEBES folders. NOTE: This feature is only available on the 300 and 500 series ProLiant storage servers.
Your HP ProLiant storage server comes pre-installed with the Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 operating system. Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 extends the Windows Storage Server 2003 operating system, providing a more efcient way to manage and control access to local and remote resources. In addition, Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 provides a scalable, security-enhanced Web platform for simplied branch server management, improved identity and access management, and more efcient storage management. Depending on the conguration you have chosen, your storage server may contain additional software providing solutions for specic business needs. For example, your server may be optimized to be a File Print Appliance (FPA).

Planning for installation
Before you install your HP ProLiant storage server, you need to make a few up-front decisions.
Determining a network access method
Before beginning setup and startup procedures, you should decide upon an access method to connect to the storage server. The type of network access you select is determined by whether or not the network has a Dynamic Host Conguration Protocol (DHCP) server, as shown in Network Access methods. The following gure shows the types of network access methods that are available and provides more information about each one.
