Using the HP Scanner 3570c Scanjet Software, Photo and Imaging Director
The HP Scanjet 3570c ships with software that allows you to scan images and text into digital form onto your computer. This guide is designed to act as a quickstart for that software. More in-depth information can be found in the online help within the software and in the manual that ships with the scanner.

Launching the Program

1. Click START, PROGRAMS, Hewlett-Packard, Scanjet 3500c series, HP Photo and Imaging Director.
2. This is the primary interface screen for the Scanjet software. From here you can scan pictures and text and save these items to your hard drive.
3. Click this icon to scan a document that is an image or a graphic.
4. Click this icon to scan a text document, or a document that is primarily text. documents scanned in this fashion will be editable in a text editor or word processor. 5. Click this icon to use the scanner as a copier. You must have a printer setup on your computer.
6. Click this icon to view previously scanned items and print them. 7. Click this icon to access the online help within the program.
Scanning Photos and Graphics
1. To scan a picture or a graphic, click the Scan Picture icon.
2. You will be asked if you wish to conduct a preview scan. Always select YES for this, as this allows you to make adjustments to your scan before you produce a final copy. Click OK.
3. You will probably receive this screen before scanning actually begins. Depending on how long the scanner has been sitting dormant, this screen may last from a brief moment up to a minute. You do not need to click on anything at this point. As soon as the scanner is ready, it will automatically initialize and scan your image.
4. You will receive this screen when your preview is complete. From here, you may resize the image. It is strongly suggested that images be resized here so that only the needed area is scanned for the final copy. This will greatly reduce file size.
5. To resize the scanning area, simply grab one of the solid black boxes ringing the preview area with your mouse drag until you have the image size you want. When you are satisfied, click the ACCEPT button to begin the final scan.
6. The final image will begin scanning. Depending on the resolution and size of the image and the speed of the computer, this process may take from a few seconds to a few minutes to complete.
7. The image will be automatically saved to the My Pictures subdirectory located in your My Documents folder.

Scanning Text Documents

1. To scan a text document, begin by clicking the Scan Document icon.
2. As before, make sure Yes is selected when you are asked if you would like a preview scan conducted.
3. You have four choices for scanning a text document. The first two, Text and Graphics as Image and Text as Image, do not produce documents that you can edit. It is recommended that you choose either Editable Text for all-text documents, and Editable Text with Graphics for documents containing text and either graphics or special characters like grids, tables, and charts.
4. The second portion of this screen allows you to determine how you would like the scan document to be created. Email scan the document and emails it to an address you specifcy. WordPad scans the document directly into WordPad for editing. Save to file saves the document directly to you My Documents folder as either an HTML, PDF, or RTF file. It is recommended that you choose either the WordPad or Save to File option, as you will generally need to edit a scanned text document into a final version. When you are ready, click the SCAN button.
5. As before, you may receive the Warming up the Lamp screen before the scan actually begins. Once the preview scan is complete, make sure the scanner has captured the text you need, and click ACCEPT.
6. When the scan is complete, you will be presented with a save screen if you chose to save your document directly to your Hard Drive. You have three format options for saving your document. If you choose PDF, you will not be able to edit your document. There will also rarely be a time when you would need to select HTML as the format. It is recommended that you select Rich Text File (RTF) as the format to save your document This filetype may be opened in both MS Word and WordPad for further editing. Select a file type, name your file, and click SAVE.

The Menus

1. There are five menus available to you when you scan a document. These menus are Scan, Basic, Advanced, Output Type, and Help. 2. The Scan menu allows you to create preview scans, Accept and preview and create a final scan, save your scan profile, or change you scan preferences, as well as exit the program.

3. The Basic menu allows you to rotate scanned images, Zoom in on images to check details, resize the scanned area, sharpen a scan if it is blurry, lighten or darken a scanned image or text, and reset all tools to their default levels.
4. The Advanced menu allows you to adjust how colors are displayed in an image, change the scanning resolution (which can dramatically effect file size), invert the colors in a scanned image (create a negative image), or scan the image or text as if it were being viewed in a mirror (i.e. text appears backwards).
5. The Help menu gives you access to the online help system in the software.
