Setting Up the HP Server tc4100
Audience Assumptions
This guide is for the person who installs, administers, and troubleshoots LAN servers. Hewlett-Packard Company assumes you are qualified in the servicing of computer equipment and trained in recognizing hazards in products with hazardous energy levels. The instructions in this document are provided in greater detail in the HP Server tc4100 Operations and Maintenance Guide. K Choose the automated NOS installation mode for first-time installations of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows NT, or Netware 4.2/5.1/6.0 on the factory-configured HP Server tc4100. You will be guided through the process by a series of HP display screens.
Configuring the HP Server tc4100
1. Power on the HP Server tc4100 and the monitor: K Insert the HP Server tc4100 Navigator CD-ROM in the CDROM drive. K The server should boot from the HP Server tc4100 Navigator CD on its own; if not, turn the power off, wait 10 seconds and turn the power back on again. K If the system fails to boot, follow the instruction on the screen. K Press F2 to enter setup, or K Press F4 to accept automatic configuration update (if prompted to do so). 2. Configure the HP Server and install the Network Operating System (NOS): K During the configuration process you will be asked to select the NOS installation Mode. K From the HP Server tc4100 Navigation Main Menu, view the system Readme from the HP Navigator main menu for the most current installation information. K Use the HP Server tc4100 Navigator to configure the Server. If you use Navigator's Guided, Custom, or Replication modes, you will be prompted through the process. NOTE If certain versions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows NT, or Netware 4.2/5.1/6.0 are used, a prompt will appear indicating selections of automated or manual NOS installation.
K Perform a manual install if you are installing a NOS other than Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows NT, or Netware 4.2/5.1/6.0, or if you have replaced HP components (for example, adding a SCSI controller board from a third-party). You will need to use the NOS vendor's installation process. Before you leave the Navigator and install your NOS, ensure that you view and print the HP-customized NOS installation instructions and create the driver diskette(s) for the NOS you are installing. 3. Install or Configure Tape Backup Software: K If your HP Server tc4100 uses a tape backup device, install and/or configure the tape backup software now. Refer to the Tape Backup Getting Started Guide for instructions on installing and configuring the tape backup software. 4. Refer to the HP Server tc4100 Online Documentation CD-ROM: K Use this CD-ROM for updated information about your HP Server and as a reference for any additional information not provided in this Installation Sheet. 5. Run DiagTools (Optional): K Create the HP DiagTools diskettes from the HP Server Utilities (or Diskette Library) on the HP Server tc4100 Navigator CD-ROM. K Run HP DiagTools and after completing all the configuration topics, save the support ticket to a diskette for future reference.

HP Server Processor Upgrade Installation Kit
The following includes steps to replace a processor or install an additional processor in the HP Server tc4100. The basic server ships with one processor in the primary processor socket. The HP Server tc4100 supports two processors that must operate at the same clock speed, cache size, and FSB speed. Both processor sockets are located on the system board.
Where to Obtain Installation Instructions
Complete processor installation and removal instructions can be found in both of the following sources: The HP Server Operations and Maintenance Guide, on the HP Server Documentation CD-ROM shipped with your HP Server, includes an installation chapter. The HP Server Operations and Maintenance Guide for your HP Server can be viewed and printed from the HP web site: http://www.hp.com
Tools Required
An antistatic service kit (3M 8501/8502/8503 or equivalent). This kit includes a static-dissipating work surface, a chassis clip lead, and a wrist strap.
Removing the Processor or Terminator
The installation procedure is the same for the rack-mounted models as for the pedestal models of the server once you gain access to the system board. CAUTION Do not open the new processor's protective bag or remove it from the bag until you are ready to install it. Before you remove a processor from the antistatic container, touch a grounded, unpainted metal surface on the HP Server tc4100 to discharge static electricity. Use an antistatic wrist strap and a grounding mat. Wear a wrist-strap and use a staticdissipating work surface connected to the chassis when handling components. Ensure that the metal of the wrist strap contacts your skin. 1. Unpack the processor shipping box and check the contents against its packing list. 2. Verify the processor speed and FSB setting, before installing the second processor module. 3. Gracefully shut down the network operating system according to directions in your NOS documentation. 4. Power off your HP Server according to directions in the HP Server Operations and Maintenance Guide. 5. Disconnect the power cords and any connected phone lines. WARNING Power supplies will continue to provide standby current to the server until the power cords are disconnected.

6. To gain access to the system board, follow the instructions for removing the cover and air scoop in the HP Server Operations and Maintenance Guide. NOTE The system board is shown removed from the HP Server tc4100 for simplicity in the following figures, but it is not necessary to remove the system board to install the new processor module.
7. If you are removing the terminator to install a second processor, remove the terminator from the secondary processor socket by lifting up the lever and pulling the terminator upwards (Figure 1). Save the terminator in an antistatic protective bag for future needs. Skip to Installing the Processor later in this document. 8. If you are replacing a processor: a. Release the heat sink from the installed processor. Press down on a heat sink clip and rotate the clip to free it from the tabs on the processor socket. Repeat this step for the second heat sink clip. b. Remove the heat sink from the processor. Save the heat sink for future needs. c. Remove the processor from the processor socket by lifting up the lever and pulling the processor upwards (Figure 1). Save the processor in an antistatic protective bag for future needs.
Figure 1. Removing the Terminator Board or Processor
Installing the Processor
NOTE Thermal grease has been applied to the heat sink at the factory. No additional thermal grease needs to be applied to the heat sink or the processor during initial installation. The tube of thermal grease in the kit should be saved and MUST be used in the following instances: If problems are experienced during installation that result in some of the grease getting scraped off. Every time after initial installation that the heat sinks are removed and reinstalled. The following steps must be followed when re-applying thermal grease to ensure proper thermal conductivity which will prevent damage to the processor that is caused by overheating: 1. Clean off all of the existing thermal grease from the processor and the heat sink using a cloth and isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. 2. Set the server unit in a position so that the processor top surface is parallel to the ground level. 3. Apply the entire tube of thermal grease to the center area of the processor. 1. Remove the processor module from the sealed bag.
Figure 2. Installing the Processor
2. Align the processor module over the processor socket by matching the corner of the processor that has fewer pins with the corner of the socket that has fewer pins. 3. Gently push down on the processor module until it seats. 4. Lower the lever to completely seat the processor module firmly in the socket.
5. To install the heat sink: NOTE HP recommends installing the heat sink supplied with the processor upgrade kit in the following steps.
a. Center the heat sink properly over the additional processor. b. Locate the bottom notched edge of the heat sink and, when placing the heat sink over the processor, be sure that the notched edge faces the front panel of the HP Server. CAUTION Ensure you have made good contact with the processor to avoid thermal overheating. If you have not made good contact with the processor, it will overheat within 20 seconds of power on and will shut down.
Figure 3. Installing the Heat Sink
3. Fasten the rear heat sink clip by matching the holes of the clips with the tabs of the socket. 4. Fasten the front heat sink clip in the same fashion. NOTE When installing a second processor, the processor speed is set automatically. No manual setting of switches is necessary.
5. Re-install the air scoop, cover, and bezel onto the HP Server according to directions in the HP Server Operations and Maintenance Guide. Return power to the server and restore normal operation.
