Product works well so far. Received it before the email came that said it shipped!! I find this unit is compact for my laptop backup. Dell has these WD products at a lower price than WD even on sale.

Bought this drive to replace smaller drive in new Toshiba laptop. It is quick, quiet and no problems. I was so impressed. It seems to work pretty well. When I test it under Linux using the smartctl program.

Good choice to have for a laptop, upgraded an old Hitachi Deskstar for this drive, and great difference in speed. Somewhat Satisfied After two years, this drive finally went South on me. I wish hard drives were not so short lived. I guess two years is not so bad.

I got this drive to replace a slow 5400 rpm Seagate drive and is amazed at the screaming performance and its quietness. excellent item for the most part, ease of installation was my issue. inexperience with unformatted.

No Comment. It seems to be a good product to this point. Runs quiet and cool. No Comment. This series of disks from Seagate are reliable, quiet and suitable for personal and business use. Good balance for the price. Buffer size.

Overview

HP StorageWorks 1510i Modular Smart Array
The HP StorageWorks 1510i Modular Smart Array is an iSCSI based 2U controller shelf that connects to both enterprise-class SCSI and Serial ATA (SATA) disk enclosures. (HP recommends SCSI drives for intensive heavy I/O requirements while SATA drives should be used in archived, "near on-line" disk-to-disk backup configurations). This combination provides customers with a low cost, high capacity storage solution. This solution has been designed as a hardware foundation for which future solutions can be designed and implemented for investment protection. The MSA1510i with up-to-eight attached SATA enclosures can provide the customer with up to 64 TB (using 750 GB SATA disk drives) of capacity*. If the business requires SCSI reliability, then attach up-to-four SCSI enclosures for a raw capacity of 16.8 TB (using 300 GB SCSI disks). The MSA1510i provide two 1 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. To attain maximum performance the MSA1510i should be connected only to a 1000base-T network. By utilizing existing SCSI drive enclosures and MSA1000 controller technology and integrating the use of low cost SATA hard drives and enclosures, the MSA1510i lowers the total cost of ownership and extends the customers hardware investments into the future. With lower cost of ownership, customers can now take advantage of tiered storage capabilities matching up data with appropriate levels of performance, availability and cost of data storage. The result is lower overall cost without giving up the needs of business applications. The MSA1510i is a member of the HP StorageWorks Modular Smart Array family, delivering industry-leading technology to meet today's demanding and growing storage needs. These storage solutions offer the best price performance features for direct attach environments and entry-level and mid-range SAN environments. Each solution is designed to maximize transfer rates, reduce management costs, while driving rapid return on investment. The MSA1510i can be remotely managed by using management tools such as HP Insight Manager and the HP Storage Management Utility. The MSA1510i is positioned for users looking for flexible, scalable and easy to manage storage solution. *maximum available storage capacity depends on the RAID level being implemented, and is based on maximum number of LUNs (32) and maximum LUN size (2 TB)

Product Highlights

Product Technology

iSCSI technology - iSCSI technology is a rapidly emerging segment, and the MSA1510i with IP interface will allow users to take advantage of this technology to deploy low cost and easy to manage IP SAN. Modular Chassis - The modular design of the MSA1510i controller shelf supports up to eight SATA enclosures, 4 single channel SCSI enclosures or 2 dual channel SCSI enclosures. The enclosures are supported on up to 4 dual channel SCSI I/O module. Scalability - up to 64 TB storage capacity utilizing 750GB SATA hard drives and eight SATA enclosures or up to 16.8 TB storage capacity utilizing 300GB SCSI hard drives and four SCSI enclosures. RAID 6 with Advanced Data Guarding (ADG) Fault Tolerance - This is the highest level of RAID protection. It allocates two sets of parity data across drives and allows simultaneous write operations. This level of fault tolerance can withstand two simultaneous drive failures without downtime or data loss. DtS Architecture - DtS (Direct Attach to SAN) architecture is an exclusive MSA1000, MSA1500cs and MSA1510i feature that provides a quick and easy way to migrate stored data on SCSI disks protected by most Smart Array controllers to a MSA1000, MSA1500cs or MSA1510i storage system. Pre-Failure Warranty - Enclosures and hard drives attached to an MSA1510i and monitored under Insight Manager are supported by a Pre-Failure (replacement) Warranty. NOTE: Pre-Failure Warranty allows for the replacement of designated drives in an HP StorageWorks disk enclosure before they actually fail when using Insight Manger. NOTE: Some operating systems may not support all of these features. Configuration and Management Tools - The MSA1510i utilizes a web browser based management and utility software, the HP Storage Management Utility (SMU) is an embedded, web-based application for configuring and managing the MSA1510i. It provides a single interface to configure the storage and iSCSI settings, monitor status, and run diagnostic reports through a standard web-browser. The HP SMU provides both an initial setup wizard to simplify configuration and an advanced interface which provides access to all aspects of the system Hot Plug Expansion and Replacement Support - The MSA1510i supports hot plug expansion and replacement of redundant controllers, fans, power supplies, and I/O modules for simple, fast installation and maintenance.

Prerequisites

MSA1510i firmware 2.02 requires the following components on the server: Windows: Microsoft iSCSI Initiator 2.08, MPIO software, and Microsoft Device Specific Module (DSM) IMPORTANT: Before installing and using 2.02 active/active firmware, any previous version of the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator and MPIO software and HP DSM must be uninstalled from the server. While this can be done manually, HP recommends using the MSA1510i Support CD version 2.02 to manage this process. An ISO image of the CD is available on the MSA1510i Support page: http://www.hp.com/support. VMware: VMware initiator that is native with ESX 3.0.x or 3.5
Important notes and service considerations
To install the firmware, use the procedures and instructions provided in these instructions and on the MSA1510i Support CD version 2.02. An ISO image of the CD is available on the MSA1510i support page:http://www.hp.com/support. Please note the following: MSA1510i firmware 2.02 is backward compatible with all previous firmware versions. MSA1510i firmware version 2.02 requires that the MPIO Device Specific Module (DSM) supplied by HP for all previous releases be uninstalled on every Windows Server connecting to the MSA1510i. Version 2.02 firmware uses the generic Microsoft-supplied DSM during the installation of the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator 2.08. Failure to do this results in conflicting ownership of Storage and loss of connectivity to LUNs during path loss. Before installing new firmware, save existing configuration records and stop all I/O. Prior to updating firmware on the MSA1510i or MSA20, ensure that all controller shelves, storage enclosures, switches, and other devices in the SAN are powered up and functioning correctly. Updating the MSA1510i or MSA20 requires the controller batteries to be fully charged. This only concerns controllers that have been sitting on the shelf for an extended period of days and put into a system where it needs to be updated. In such case, leave the system powered on for a few hours before trying a firmware update. If currently-installed firmware is version 1.30 or earlier, use Internet Explorer 6.0 to do the update. IE7.0 is not supported for use with firmware versions 1.30 or earlier. After installing 2.02 firmware, in dual-controller configurations, you must configure a management port on the second controller. After installing 2.02 firmware, in dual-controller configurations, the system assigns LUN ownership off all LUNs to one of the two controllers. Over time, the system implicitly manages the optimal paths of the LUNs to the controllers, reassigning LUN ownership as needed. For more information, see the MSA1510i installation and user guide or the MSA1510i iSCSI concepts and deployment guide.

After updating MSA20 firmware, the controller shelf and ALL MSA20 and MSA30 attached storage enclosures must be power-cycled. Any attached MSA20 storage enclosures must be at firmware version 2.08 prior to installing MSA1510i firmware version 2.02.
Installation instructions
If your MSA1510i setup includes one or more attached MSA20 storage enclosures, you must update the firmware on all MSA20s before updating the MSA1510i. Use the following instructions to update MSA20 firmware: 1. 2. Extract the MSA20 firmware image file to a system folder. (The MSA20 firmware filename will be in a format similar to MSA20_v208_b7A31.bin.) Update the firmware using the HP Storage Management Utility (SMU): a. b. c. d. Point your browser to and open the SMU. Select the Configure tab. Select Controller (Active) > Flash Firmware. Click Browse, navigate to the location of the previously downloaded MSA20 firmware image file, and then select OK. Progress is indicated in the browser with "Flashing Firmware." e. Wait for the following popup message The operation completed successfully. The Storage system must be reset for the changes to take place." to display in the browser and for 313 FIRMWARE FLASH DONE ON BOX <n> to display on the MSA1510i LCD panel. NOTE: If one or more MSA20 units are connected to the MSA1510i, each one is sequentially updated during this process. 3. 4. Manually power cycle all attached MSA20s and wait for them to complete their startup processes. In the SMU, select Storage System > Reset System to restart the MSA1510i.
To update MSA1510i firmware, do the following: 1. In dual controller MSA1510i configurations, log off all of the redundant paths to the standby controller prior to beginning a firmware update. IMPORTANT: The update will NOT succeed if redundant paths are detected by the MPIO/DSM and may require multiple reboots to recover back to the original firmware version. There could also be potential loss of connection of the Internet Explorer to the management port if there are redundant paths during the flash update cycle. 2. Extract the MSA1510i firmware image file to a system folder. (The MSA1510i firmware filename will be in a format similar to V202B100_20081117.bin.)

Update the firmware using the HP Storage Management Utility (SMU) : a. b. c. d. Point your browser to and open the SMU. Select the Configure tab. Select Controller (Active) > Flash Firmware. Click Browse, navigate to the location of the previously downloaded MSA1510i firmware image file, and then select OK.
In the SMU, select Storage System > Reset System to restart the MSA1510i. IMPORTANT: In dual controller configurations, the second controller MUST be updated to the same image to complete the update cycle. When the system is restarted, the new firmware will automatically be cloned from the just-updated controller over to the other controller. For more information, see the "Redundant-controller firmware cloning" instructions in the HP StorageWorks 1510i Modular Smart Array maintenance and service guide.
Determining installed version
To determine the firmware installed on an MSA1510i controller, do one of the following: On the MSA controller LCD panel, press the ^ v keys to scroll through the messages until the ARRAY CONTROLLER FIRMWARE <version> message is displayed. In the MSA-CLI, use the SHOW VERSION command. In the Storage Management Utility (SMU) , select View MSA1510i Controller.
