HP StorageWorks 50 Modular Smart Array Enclosure
The HP StorageWorks 50 Modular Smart Array (MSA50) Enclosure is a 1U Serial Attach SCSI(SAS) disk drive storage enclosure supporting Small Form Factor(SFF) SAS or Serial ATA(SATA) drives. This enclosure delivers industry-leading data performance, availability, storage density, and upgradeability to meet customers' demanding and growing storage needs. The all new SFF drive carrier is designed to support the new Universal form factor hard drive in either SAS or SATA. This new form factor provides optimized performance per U of space while delivering unparalleled power consumption. The MSA50 enclosure supports direct attach storage to HP ProLiant and Integrity Servers. The MSA50 supports the cascading of shelves in a 1+1 configuration to allow a maximum of 20 SFF drives in a 2U configuration attached to a single controller port. This single controller port incorporates four lanes for a total max throughput of 12Gb/s for SAS.

The MSA50 design allows for the mix of SAS and SATA drives in the same enclosure at the same time and is tailored to the needs of HP server customers who require optimized performance per U of rack space. Customer Benefits Higher Performance per U of Rack Space
The Serialized nature of SAS combined with the highest spindle count per U of rack space allows the MSA50 to achieve the greatest I/Os per second when compared to parallel SCSI. The MSA50 will be the first SAS/SATA SFF JBOD product that will offer a Price Sensitivity level of availability sufficient for the Enterprise and a price structure that is attractive to SMB. The MSA50 allows mix and match SAS or SATA drives within the same Investment Protection enclosure. Thus making technology transitions simple and cost effective. Reduced Spares Inventory Universal SFF drives and similar physical characteristics between SAS and SATA drives allow customers to mix/match SAS and SATA in the same enclosure and allow the same drives to be used in servers and external storage.

Features of the MSA50 include: SFF (SAS/SATA) support Delivering data transfer rates up 3Gb/s for SAS and 1.5Gb/s for SATA NOTE: SAS/SATA performance requires a compatible SAS controller. This is noted in the product documentation. 1U rack height. Supports up to 10 SFF SAS and/or SATA Universal hard disk drives. Provides storage capacity of up to 6 TB SAS per enclosure (using 600 GB 6G 10K 2.5-inch SAS dual Port disk drives) or 5 TB SAS Midline (using 500 GB SAS MDL) or 2.5 TB SATA (using 250 GB SATA disk drives) Cascadable 1+1 for up to 20 spindles in a 2U configuration or 12 TB SAS or 10 TB SAS MDL or 5 TB SATA. Modular design allows the MSA50 to be used in any storage configuration from JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) to Smart Array storage enclosures. A common storage platform allows the potential for future storage consolidation to the SAN. Universal SFF SAS drive carrier - provides better cooling and reliability for by providing increased air flow through the storage unit. Hot pluggable disk drives, fans and power supplies. Field replaceable fans, I/O Module and mid plane. Easy removal of parts provides better serviceability. No tools are required!

Upgradeability

Potential Upgrade path for a HP StorageWorks MSA50 is as easy as swapping out the I/O Module on the back of the unit. The unit must be powered down to replace the I/O Module.
Mix and Match of Hard Drive Types
A benefit of SAS and SATA is the use of a common physical connection which allows for both drive types to be mixed together on the same backplane. This common backplane allows customers the choice of using SAS and/or SATA and helps deliver HP's message of industry leading innovation, reliability, adaptability, and performance by allowing customers to choose the reliability of SAS or the lower cost of SATA for tiered storage.

Hot Pluggable
Hot pluggable technology is designed into drives, fans and redundant power supplies. Hot pluggable components can be replaced without powering down the storage system or stopping I/O operations. This feature significantly enhances data availability.

Auto SAS ID Selection

SAS ID is automatically set when a drive is inserted into a drive bay (See drawing on top of unit for bay numbering).

LED Indicators

Front panel LEDs indicate drive activity, required drive service, and power, giving a quick visual assessment of overall system storage status.

Rack Density

The MSA50 Enclosure has a 1U height.
Environment Monitoring Unit (EMU)
Each MSA50 model is equipped with an EMU that constantly monitors the enclosure, the power supplies, and fans to ensure suggested operating tolerances are maintained.

I/O Module

The single I/O module installed allows one SAS controller to access all drives in the MSA50.

Fault Tolerance

With redundant power supplies and fans, the MSA50 provides a high level of system availability. Using an internal host based controller, the MSA50 can be configured for RAID levels 0, 1, 1 + 0, 5, 6 (RAID ADG) when using a HP Smart Array RAID controller.

Manageability

The MSA50 is managed by HP Systems Insight Manager.
Compatibility and Integration Testing
Intensive compatibility and performance testing with HP ProLiant servers ensures the highest level of integration available in the industry. For a complete list of supported HP servers and workstations, please refer to the QuickSpecs and/or User Guide of the array controller or Host Bus adapter that you are planning to use. The list of supported array controllers and SAS adapters is provided under "Related Options, Controllers".

Warranty
Three-year limited parts only warranty, including hardware diagnostic support, pre-failure warranty (coverage of hard drives, memory and processors). The warranty is fully supported by HP Services and a worldwide network of resellers and service providers. In addition 90-day's getting started software telephone support may be covered under the warranty or available for an additional fee. Enhancements to warranty services are available through HP Care Pack services NOTE: The MSA50 has a limited 3 year parts only warranty. The SAS drives have a 3 year warranty; SAS MDL and SATA drives have a 1 year warranty NOTE: Certain restrictions and exclusions apply. Hard drive Pre-Failure Warranty: When used with any one of the StorageWorks Smart Array Family controllers and monitored under HP Systems Insight Manager (v4.20 or later), HP hard drives are supported by a Pre-Failure (replacement) Warranty.

HP StorageWorks 70 Modular Smart Array
The HP StorageWorks 70 Modular Smart Array enclosure is a 2U Serial Attach SCSI (SAS) disk drive storage enclosure supporting 2.5 inch SAS or Serial ATA (SATA) drives. This enclosure delivers industry-leading data performance, availability, storage density, and upgradeability to meet customers' demanding and growing storage needs. This enclosure is designed to support 2.5 inch Universal SAS and SATA hard drive form factors. The MSA70 enclosure supports direct attach storage (DAS) to HP ProLiant and Integrity Servers. The MSA70 supports the cascading of shelves in a 1+1 configuration to allow a maximum of 50 drives in a 4U configuration behind each of the two external ports on the HP Smart Array P800, the HP Smart Array E500, the HP Smart Array P411, the HP Smart Array P212 or the P812 Controller for a total of 100 drives in 4 enclosures (a single controller port incorporates four lanes for a total max throughput of 12Gb/s for SAS). (NOTE: Smart Array P411 and P812 Controllers are supported on NOTE: ProLiant servers only). On HP ProLiant servers Dual Domain support is available for the HP Smart Array P800 attached to a MSA70 with the addition of the HP StorageWorks Dual Domain I/O Module Option (AG779A). (Single initiator environment only.) The MSA70 also supports the HP Smart Array P600 and the HP Smart Array P212 Controllers. Behind the single external port on the HP Smart Array P600 controller 1+1 cascading allows a maximum of 50 drives in a 4U configuration. (NOTE: Smart Array P212 NOTE: Controller is supported on ProLiant servers only). For HP-UX and Open VMS environments on selected HP Integrity Servers the MSA70 supports the HP (AH303A) SC44Ge Host Bus Adapter with the addition of the HP StorageWorks Dual Domain I/O Module Option (AG779A). Behind the single external port on the HP (AH303A) SC44Ge Host Bus Adapter 1+1 cascading allows a maximum of 50 drives in a 4U configuration. The HP (AH303A) SC44Ge Host Bust Adapter will only support HP-UX and Open VMS environments and will be available on all rack mounted HP Integrity Servers with PCIe slots. The addition of the I/O Module with the HP SC44Ge Host Bus Adapter adds support for Multi Initiator JBOD Clusters. It will support HP-UX and Open VMS on selected HP Integrity servers only. The MSA70 with the I/O Module and the HP SC44Ge Host Bus Adaptor will not support ProLiant servers. Multi Initiator JBOD clusters are supported with dual port SAS drives only. Support for HP Serviceguard software on HP-UX with HP-UX 11iv2/11iv3 only. HP Serviceguard monitors the health of each node and rapidly responds to failures in a way that minimizes or eliminates application downtime. NOTE: HP Integrity servers that are supported: rx2660, rx3600, rx6600, rx7640, rx8640, Superdome sx2000 (only the version that support PCI-e cards) The MSA70 is also supported when attached to a HP StorageWorks MSA2000 G2 or P2000 G3 Small Form Factor (SFF) Arrays. The SFF MSA2000 G2 or the P2000 G3 can accommodate up to twenty four (24) SFF drives and is designed for small to medium size department and remote locations. The MSA2000 G2 supports attachment of up to three (3) dual I/O MSA70 SFF JBODs (99 SFF drives). P2000 G3 Arrays support attachment of up to five(5) dual I/O MSA70 SFF JBODs (149 SFF drives).

Modular Smart Array 70

The HP StorageWorks 70 Modular Smart Array is an end-to-end flexible storage array, offering data availability, enhanced reliability, enhanced performance and tiered storage capability with SAS and SATA drives and investment protection. Manage your small and midrange business growing storage needs by deploying this low cost, flexible tiered storage system with up to 90 TB SAS, 100 TB SAS MDL or SATA MDL (100 drives across four enclosures) capacity supporting both SAS and SATA. The modular, scalable design of the MSA70 provides a flexible platform allowing you to buy what is needed today and purchase additional capacity as data storage needs grow, instead of making a large up-front investment. Additional drives and enclosures can be easily added as customer needs dictate without extra management charges as needs grow. For Small businesses, it is a stepping stone to simplify capacity expansion of HP ProLiant and HP Integrity Server environments to external storage without having to make the full move to SAN or NAS. Several fault tolerant configurations keep data available and servers running while drives are being replaced - RAID levels that offer fault tolerance include: RAID 50 (RAID 5+0) protects against failure of one drive (and failure of particular multiple drives).
