HP DAT 72 tape storage for NonStop S-series servers
Data sheet
DAT 72 tape drives utilize Digital Data Storage (DDS) technology, which provides capacity, reliability, and low cost, resulting in excellent media investment protection and remarkably low cost of ownership.
HP announces the availability of HP StorageWorks DAT 72 tape drives for use with HP NonStop S-series servers. HP StorageWorks DAT 72 tape drives are based on the Digital Data Storage (DDS) format, the most successful tape backup format of all time, with an installed based of more than 9 million drives. DDS technology has led the tape market for so many years because of its capacity, reliability, and low cost. DAT 72 tape drives for NonStop servers have backward compatibility with two previous DDS generations, providing excellent media investment protection. The low cost of DDS media contributes to DATs extraordinarily low cost of ownership.
Key features and benefits
Utilizes the successful and popular DDS technology Provides extraordinarily low cost of ownership Provides backward compatibility with previous DDS generations Offers a uniquely enhanced and expanded user interface that makes operations easier
Whats new
The HP StorageWorks DAT 72 tape drive is now available in three configurations for use with NonStop S-series servers. These include a single cartridge manual-load tape drive and a model equipped with a six-media cartridge automatic cartridge loader (ACL), both designed for table-top use. Additionally, a NEBS-compliant version suitable for use in telco central office applications is also available. The telco package is a two-tape drive unit. Each unit is a single cartridge manual-load tape drive, housed in a 19-inch rack-mount package that also includes a 48-volt power supply. Complete ordering information for all three models is provided below. The DAT 72 tape drives have added value in the form of an enhanced and expanded user interface. The interface provides valuable information essential to effective use and maintenance of the DAT 72 tape drive. Information available at the push of a front-panel button includes drive identification, firmware revision level, transfer rate, current operational mode, compression on/off, compression ratio, remaining cartridge capacity, and other information. Making this information easily available ensures NonStop server tape operations run more efficiently and with reduced operator error. The DAT 72 tape drive products provide a replacement path for the 5142ACL DDS-3 DAT tape drive, which was discontinued from sales at the end of 2003, as well as other DDS-3 tape drives for NonStop systems. Customers that choose to replace their 5142ACL tape drive or add to their capacity by purchasing the new DAT 72 drives should know that the DAT 72 product is capable of reading and writing in a format useable by the DDS-3 tape drives; however, a specific process must be followed in order to achieve that compatibility. Tapes written by the DAT 72 product in the default configuration are not readable by earlier generations of DAT tape drives. A tape migration strategy and plan is required for customers in a mixed-DDS tape media environment.
Benefits of StorageWorks DAT 72 tape drive products
The StorageWorks DAT 72 products provide Native cartridge capacity of 36 gigabytes at up to a 3-megabyte-per-second transfer rate Up to 2:1 compression, with a potential for up to 72 gigabytes per cartridge and a 6-megabyte-per-second transfer rate Unique user interface on the DAT 72 tape drives that make operations easier
