HP StorageWorks SDLT Tape Drive Family
Tape backup is an important component in a complete data protection strategy. Tape offers long term reliability, the ability to remove media offsite and has a low cost per GB. The HP StorageWorks SDLT Tape Drives are high-capacity, high-performance streaming tape drives designed for use with HP ProLiant servers, HP AlphaServers, and Open SAN storage systems. These tape drives use Laser Guided Magnetic Recording (LGMR) technology to maximize the amount of data that can be stored on a tape. HP SDLT drives also use a clustered magnetic-resistive (MR) head technology to improve data density, use Partial Response Maximum Likelihood (PRML) technology to provide increased performance, and have a robust tape buckling system for reliability. The SDLT 600 is the newest tape drive in the SDLT drive family. This drive is for HP customers who use Corporate-to-Enterprise servers and require higher performance and greater capacity than the SDLT 320 offers. The HP StorageWorks SDLT 600 GB Tape Drive extends the advantages of an SDLT-based data protection solution by increasing capacity and performance by almost double. Total costs of ownership are lowered by reducing the number of data cartridges required and by shrinking the backup window for business-critical data. In addition, backward-read compatibility to existing DLT VS and SDLT-based solutions provides the highest level of investment protection while offering a smooth transition path to new SDLT based data protection solutions. The SDLT 600 offers backward-read compatibility to the DLT VS 160 and to the SDLT 320 and SDLT 220. The HP SDLT 600 offers write once read many (WORM) support and will use the new HP Super DLTtape II 600GB data cartridge. This media uses new eMP60 technology with a thinner magnetic layer and smaller magnetic particle in order to provide the increased capacity and improved strength and durability. Super DLT (SDLT) Technology
Super DLT Tape is an extension of the DLT platform. It is designed to meet the business critical demands of enterprise storage customers. The new SDLT platform extends the advantages of DLT technology by increasing capacity, performance, and reliability standards through technological advances in drive head and media design. With backward-read compatibility, the new SDLT tape drive provides customers with an easy migration path to advanced technology for their data protection strategies.
Backward-Read Compatibility
The SDLT 600 drive provides backward-read compatibility to the SDLT 320 and the DLT VS160. SDLT 600 tape drives write to the following media: Super DLTtape II SDLT 600 tape drives read the following media: Super DLTtape II, also reads DLTtape VS1 cartridges written on DLT VS160 and Super DLTtape I cartridges written on SDLT 320 and SDLT 220 drives
OBDR - One Button Disaster Recovery
With HP One-Button Disaster Recovery, you can quickly, reliably and simply restore your entire system just by inserting the most recent backup tape and pushing one button on the tape drive. Your HP StorageWorks SDLT 600 tape drive will restore your operating system, configuration, applications, drivers and data files. There's no longer a need to search for software disks and manuals, plus with downtime reduced, the costs of recovery are minimized. There's no need to make a new set of disaster recovery disks each time the network configuration is altered or a peripheral is added. Recovering from a disaster manually at a stressful time makes for an error-prone process. The sheer simplicity of HP OneButton Disaster Recovery means less human error. Backup and disaster recovery preparation - previously two separate tasks - become one process. OBDR is simply the best disaster recovery product for small to medium systems. The HP StorageWorks SDLT 600 Tape Drive includes support for WORM (Write-Once, Read-Many) functionality. The SDLT 600 WORM implementation is currently supported by Veritas NetBackup. As more software support is added, updated support information can be found at: http://www.hp.com/go/connect. WORM technology provides an enhanced level of security against accidental or malicious alteration of data on tape cartridges. WORM can be important when implementing data retention policies to be compliant with regulations regarding the storage of data on non-rewritable, non-erasable media. The SDLT 600 tape drive ships with support for WORM and can be set to WORM mode using the backup application. Once the cartridge has been set up for WORM, you will be unable to erase or overwrite the data on it, although you will be able to append data until the cartridge is full. WORM media can be read as often as required. When implementing WORM an unformatted or blank Super DLTtape II 600GB data cartridge is required. HP StorageWorks SDLT tape drives. include HP Data Protector Express Single Server Edition software. This easy to use backup application, based on Data Protector Express, robustly protects a single Windows, Linux or NetWare server. Also included is the Data Protector Express Bare Metal Disaster Recovery (BMDR) option which provides automated system recovery of the server following a major hardware or software failure. Rack-mount Tape Options

The SDLT 600 is supported in the HP StorageWorks 3U, allowing customer to install up to 2 internal DLT or SDLT drives in a 3U rack-mount space. Standard configuration for 3U Rack-mount Kit provides two internal SCSI buses (channels) supporting one DLT or SDLT drive per bus. SDLT tape drives are fully supported and compatible with HP ProLiant and AlphaServer systems, HP StorageWorks DLT Tape Enclosures and Array, and controllers. Overview

HP StorageWorks DLT VS Family Tape Drive
Backing up to tape is a key component of a complete storage strategy. Tape drives can be used for creating daily and weekly backups and tape allows customers to remove information off-site. Tape can be used for archival purposes to retain data for up to 30 years. The new HP StorageWorks DLT VS160 Tape Drive provides 160 GB capacity and 16 MB/s performance compressed. This is double the capacity and performance of the DLT VS80, reducing the overall cost of ownership, increasing the capacity in a single tape drive, reducing the number of cartridges needed to store the same amount of information and resulting in less downtime needed for back-ups. The DLT VS160 is a half-height drive based on DLT tape technology. Customers who have outgrown previousgeneration DLT drives can move to the DLT VS160 and get increased capacity and performance and backward-read compatibility with the DLT VS80 formatted media. The DLT VS160 media can be read by the SDLT 600 providing a longer-term upgrade solution when customers outgrow the DLT VS160.

The DLT VS Tape Drives provide HP customers with value-capacity solutions that share much of the technology used other DLT tape drives. From its compatibility with previous-generation drives to its use of DLZ data compression and RLL encoding, DLT VS technology offers HP customers many of the same technological features found in previous generation DLT drives, while improving such features as capacity and performance.
Media and Drive Compatibility
HP recommends that you use HP-branded cartridges in your HP tape drives to assure the highest level of protection for your valuable data. HP's test program for HP DLT VS media is the most thorough and comprehensive in the industry. All HP cartridges must satisfy an exhaustive battery of additional tests that relate directly to real-life situations, where real data and real businesses are at stake. Non-HP cartridges, whilst fully compatible, are less optimized for use in HP tape devices. Your best choice for ease of support and maximum dependability is to use HP-branded DLT cartridges at all times. The DLT VS160 Tape drive uses the DLTtape VS1 160GB data cartridge and DLTtape VS160 cleaning cartridge. The DLTtape VS1 media is a new type of media with improvements over the DLT Type IV media used in the DLT VS80 drive. It offers higher capacity and improved reliability. The DLT VS80 Tape Drive utilizes HP DLTIV data cartridges as well as industry standard DLT Type IV media and DLT VS cleaning cartridges.

This easy to use backup application, based on Data Protector Express, robustly protects a single Windows, Linux or NetWare server. The DLT VS160 is supported in the HP StorageWorks 1U and 3U Rack-mount Kits, allowing customer to install up to 2 internal DLT VS drives in a 1U rack-mount space or up to 4 internal DLT VS drives in a 3U rack-mount space, respectively. Standard configuration for 3U Rack-mount Kit provides two internal SCSI buses (channels) supporting one DLT VS drive per bus. Standard configuration for 1U Rack-mount Kit provides two internal SCSI buses (channels) supporting up to 2 DLT VS drives per bus.
