Overview
HP StorageWorks Ultrium Half-Height Tape Drives
The HP StorageWorks family of Ultrium tape drives is HP's premier line of tape backup devices. Based on LTO Ultrium format, an open standard with a well-defined six-generation roadmap, HP Ultrium tape drives offer customers the best choice for investment protection relative to their backup and archival requirements. HP pioneered the half-height Ultrium drive, as the only manufacturer offering full-height and half-height models of each generation of Ultrium drives. Delivering the perfect balance of capacity and performance, HP Ultrium half-height drives are designed for server customers in direct attached storage (DAS) environments where hard disk and system bottlenecks can impede data transfer rates. Four generations of half-height drives are available from HP, offering a wide portfolio to meet the backup requirements for entry and midrange servers. With ultimate reliability and ease of use in mind, even at a 100% duty cycle, HP's rugged design builds on superior LTO technology and adds advanced features to create a new level of data protection. HP Ultrium tape drives employ dynamic data rate matching to adjust to the speed of the host, reducing wear and tear on both drive and media and increasing performance, even on slower hosts. HP's ultra-durable soft-load feature automatically positions the data cartridge, and the highly reliable HP leader-capture mechanism virtually eliminates lost leaders, increasing the success of your backup and restore operations. The included HP Data Protector Express Single Server Edition Software supports the HP tape drive's One-Button Disaster Recovery feature to provide the easiest way to restore data in the event of a disaster. If data is critical to your business, protect it with an HP StorageWorks Ultrium tape drives.
What's New
The new HP StorageWorks LTO-4 Ultrium 1760 represents HP's forth generation half-height tape drive: Delivers a capacity of 1.6 TB of compressed data on a single cartridge. Fastest half-height LTO drive in HP's portfolio with a compressed data transfer rate of 160 MB/sec. AES 256-bit hardware data encryption prevents unauthorized access of tape cartridges. Support WORM (Write-Once, Read-Many) media for meeting regulatory compliance. SAS and SCSI interfaces available.
HP StorageWorks Ultrium 232 Tape Drive
The HP StorageWorks Ultrium 232 tape drive is entry into the LTO portfolio. This affordable superdrive delivers enterprise-class capacity, performance, and reliability. With a compressed capacity of 200 GB per data cartridge and a compressed data transfer rate of 115 GB per hour, this LTO-1 drive is read- and write-compatible with all first-generation Ultrium drives and media, and its media can be read by any LTO-1, LTO-2, or LTO-3 drive from any manufacturer.

HP StorageWorks Ultrium 448 Tape Drive
The HP StorageWorks Ultrium 448 tape drive is HP's second generation of half-height LTO tape drive technology. Offering a choice of both SCSI and SAS models, this midrange capacity, low cost tape drive delivers a compressed storage capacity of 400 GB per data cartridge and a compressed data transfer rate of 172 GB per hour, double the capacity and one and a half times the performance of the Ultrium 232 tape drive. The Ultrium 448 tape drive is fully read and write compatible with all first- and second-generation Ultrium drives and media. These features, combined with low pricing, make the Ultrium 448 the ideal direct-attach and network backup solution for entry-level and midrange servers where capacity and low cost of ownership are critical. New SAS-based models allow for direct connect to SAS-based HP ProLiant servers via embedded SAS controller or SAS HBA.
Ultrium 448 External Tape Drive
Ultrium 448 Internal Tape Drive
HP StorageWorks Ultrium 920 Tape Drive
The HP StorageWorks Ultrium 920 tape drive is HP's third generation of half-height LTO tape drive technology. The Ultrium 920 delivers a compressed storage capacity of 800 GB per data cartridge and a compressed data transfer rate of 432 GB per hour, two and a half times faster than the previous generation Ultrium 448 tape drive. Available in both SCSI and SAS models, the Ultrium 920 is ideal for midrange and departmental servers. The Ultrium 920 Tape Drive is fully read and write compatible with all secondgeneration Ultrium drives and media and offers further investment protection through its backward-read compatibility with firstgeneration Ultrium media. For IT organizations with stringent, long-term data retention requirements, the Ultrium 920's WORM (WriteOnce, Read-Many) data protection feature offers a simple and secure method for archiving records as part of a compliance solution to meet the toughest of industry regulations.
Page 7
WORM (Write-Once, Read-Many) Drive and Media Support
Critical to the success of data retention policies in highly regulated environments is the ability to store and manage data in an unalterable state. Following stringent guidelines set forth by regulatory agencies such as the SEC and HIPPA, IT organizations must now integrate new solutions and policies that can verify the integrity of stored data for periods that can extend well beyond seven years. Ultrium 920 and Ultrium 1760 tape drives feature the ability to archive and store data in a nonrewriteable format that meets the most stringent regulatory guidelines. Using a combination of integrated fail-safe features in the drive firmware, cartridge memory, and tape formatting, the Ultrium 920 and Ultrium 1760 can archive large amounts of data for periods of up to 30 years in a secure, untampered state. Since all Ultrium 920 and Ultrium 1760 tape drives include support for both rewritable and WORM media, IT organizations can now easily integrate a secure, long-term archiving solution into their current data protection strategy. As compared to other technologies that feature support for WORM storage, Ultrium 920 and Ultrium 1760 tape drives offer the advantages of: A single drive to support all backup and archiving needs Two distinctive tape cartridges to easily distinguish and manage both rewriteable and WORM data cartridges A specially designed WORM data cartridge with multiple integrated fail-safe features to prevent accidental or intentional overwriting of data High-capacity, low-cost HP WORM media that can store up to 1.6 TB of data on a single data cartridge Support from many backup and archiving software vendors, providing the most comprehensive and mainstream support in the industry The LTO open standard that offers greater choice and compatibility across all third-generation Ultrium products NOTE: While all HP Ultrium 920, Ultrium 960, Ultrium 1760 and Ultrium 1840 tape drives support LTO Ultrium WORM media, some third-generation LTO Ultrium tape drives from other manufacturers may not include read and write support for LTO Ultrium WORM media. For non-HP third-generation LTO Ultrium tape drives, please check the manufacturers' specifications to ensure this support is provided if you are using your WORM media. If WORM support is not provided, the drive will eject the WORM tape cartridge immediately upon insertion into to the tape drive.

HP StorageWorks Ultrium 1840/960/460 Removable tape drive
1 Introduction
NOTE: Correct alignment of SCSI tape drives in the tape array is essential to ensure a secured connection is made between the interface of the drive and the interface of the array.
This poster describes how to install your HP StorageWorks Ultrium full-height tape drive. Connect to a dedicated Ultra320 SCSI HBA for Ultrium 1840 and 960 and do not daisy chain with other drives. Connect to an Ultra160 SCSI HBA (or higher) for Ultrium 460 Use the supplied SCSI cable Connect directly to the storage server (not over a network) Use the correct driver Use HP Library & Tape Tools to check system and tape drive performance WARNING: To avoid personal injury or damage to the server or tape drive, disconnect your server from the mains power supply before installing the tape drive. See also Safety booklet on the CD-ROM. Push on the extractor lever to complete the insertion and to lock the tape drive in place.
Start Here
2 Preparing the host
IMPORTANT: Refer to www.hp.com/go/connect for detailed compatibility information about servers, operating systems, software applications and SCSI HBAs. SCSI HBA We recommend adedicated Ultra320 host bus adapter for Ultrium 1840 and 960. We recommend an Ultra160 or Ultra320 host bus adapter for Ultrium 460. If necessary, install a new HBA before you connect the tape drive. Ensure that you are connecting to a supported HBA running the recommended firmware version. Your tape drive will work with lower-rated LVDS SCSI but performance may be degraded. Single-ended SCSI will degrade performance and limit cable length. Do not attach to narrow or HVD SCSI. Drivers For Windows systems, we recommend that you use the installer on the CD-ROM. Subsequent updates are available from Windows Update or the HP web site. For other operating systems, patch to the latest version of the operating system, following the instructions in the patch documentation. See also the UNIX Configuration Guide on the CD-ROM. Backup software Always upgrade your software application to ensure it works correctly with the tape drive. The in-box software provides full support for all the features of your tape drive.

If there are empty bays, insert a blanking plate. This is essential to ensure adequate airflow is maintained. Failure to do so may affect tape drive performance. See the documentation with the tape array for details on installing blanking plates.
4 Connecting the tape drive
CAUTION: Turn off and remove the power cords from the server and all attached accessories.
SCSI ID
NOTE: The HP driver is suitable for use in most applications, but refer also to the documentation of your software application to ensure you are using the recommended driver. Free diagnostic tool HP StorageWorks Library & Tape Tools (L&TT) is the recommended diagnostic and support tool for your HP tape drive. It is available free on your HP StorageWorks CD-ROM or at www.hp.com/support/tapetools. Use it to verify installation, upgrade firmware and to aid in troubleshooting.
3 Installing the tape drive
CAUTION: When handling a tape drive, hold the drive by the side carrier framework. To avoid possible damage, do not hold the body of the drive and do not push or pull on the tape drives front panel. Before installing a tape drive, make sure that the extractor lever is in the fully open position (pulled out).
1 SCSI ID SCSI cable and termination The tape drive does not require any SCSI cables to plug into the tape array. (You need the correct size LVD SCSI cables and multimode terminators to connect the tape array to your server.) Daisy-chaining multiple devices is not recommended. If you do so, do not mix drive families (only daisy-chain with other Ultrium tape drives) and attach no more than two devices to the same SCSI bus. Make sure that a SCSI terminator is attached to the appropriate SCSI-OUT connector on the back of the tape array. SCSI ID Set the appropriate switch on the rear of the tape array.
5 Powering on the tape drive and verify
connection
1 Extractor lever, open Slide the tape drive into one of the open bays, ensuring that the guide rails on both sides of the drive locate into the slots on the partition wall. Carefully but firmly ensure the tape drive is pushed fully in so that the rear connectors are securely seated. The extractor level will close slightly. Plug in the host server or workstation and all attached devices. Power on the tape drive using the power button located at the front of the Tape Array. Check the Ready LED on the front panel to make sure the tape drive is ready for use. Turn on any other devices you turned off earlier. Turn on the server. Verify the connection using HP Library & Tape Tools.

6 Checking the performance of your product
(*All values assume 2:1 compression.) If performance is not meeting expectations and you are not meeting your backup window, check for bottlenecks in your system architecture.
The Ultrium 1840 tape drives can write compressed data at up to 864 GB/hour*. The Ultrium 960 tape drive can write compressed data at up to 576 GB/hour*. The Ultrium 460 tape drive can write compressed data at up to 216 GB/hour*.
Your backup application must support hardware encryption for it to work. The software supplied with the tape drive provides this support. See www.hp.com/go/connect for an up-to-date list of backup software. You should keep a record or backup of your encryption keys and store them in a secure place separate from the computer running the backup software. If you are unable to supply the key when requested to do so, neither you nor HP Support will be able to access the encrypted data. For more information about AES encryption, encryption keys, and using hardware encryption with your HP Ultrium 1840 tape drive, see the White Papers on h18006.www.hp.com/storage/tapewhitepapers.html.
Troubleshooting

The recommended cleaning cartridge is the HP Ultrium universal cleaning cartridge, C7978A. This cartridge is designed to work with any Ultrium drive and may be used for up to 50 cleans. It pays to look after your media Many tape drive and backup failures are caused by damaged or badly handled tape media. Keep media in the case provided. Follow the temperature, humidity and acclimitization guidelines on the media packaging. Avoid dropping it or rough handling, as this is likely to damage the cartridge. Inspect it regularly for damage. Do not exceed normal cartridge life (260 full volume backup or restore operations). For detailed information on media care and best practice and to order online, refer to www.hp.com/go/storagemedia/ultrium.

1. If you back up over a network, anything less than Gigabit Ethernet may limit performance. 2. A single disk may limit backup performance. Have disks in parallel (e.g. RAID5) if possible or, if your backup application supports interleaving of data, back up streams from multiple sources. 3. Use the latest version of your backup application. Native backup applications, such as Windows backup, may limit performance. 4. Connect the tape drive to a dedicated SCSI bus. SCSI card: Use a PCI-express or a 64-bit PCI expansion slot. Use an Ultra320 SCSI HBA in a 64-bit/66MHz or better expansion slot for Ultrium 1840 and 960. Use an Ultra160 or higher for Ultrium 460. 5. For optimum performance use HP Ultrium 1.6 TB and Ultrium 1.6 TB WORM cartridges with the Ultrium 1840, HP Ultrium 800 GB and Ultrium 800 GB WORM cartridges with Ultrium 960 and HP Ultrium 400 GB cartridges with Ultrium 460.

7 Hardware encryption and your Ultrium 1840
tape drive
Your HP Ultrium 1840 tape drive provides the ability to hardware encrypt your data, applying the strongest level of AES industry-standard encryption and protecting the data from unauthorized access and use. Encryption is supported only on Ultrium 1.6 TB media (C7974A and C7974W); media encrypted on an HP Ultrium 1840 drive can only be read on a compatible Ultrium tape drive that supports hardware encryption. Hardware encryption can be used with or without compression and without speed or capacity penalties. IMPORTANT: Hardware encryption is a powerful feature, but should be used with care. If you need to import your media onto another machine or to recover after disaster you will be required to enter an encryption key. Hardware encryption is turned off by default and is switched on by settings in your backup application, where you also generate and supply the encryption key. 1 Ready green On: the drive is ready for use Off: the drive power is off or there was a failure during self-test Flashing: the drive is busy Flashing repeated pattern: the drive is in OBDR (One-Button Disaster Recovery) mode 2 Drive amber Off: no fault has been detected Flashing: the drive mechanism has detected a hardware error 3 Tape amber Off: no fault has been detected Flashing: the cartridge currently in the drive is faulty (damaged or unsupported). Discard the cartridge. 4 Clean amber On: cleaning cartridge in use Off: the drive does not require cleaning Flashing: the drive needs cleaning
