CASE ASSEMBLY
INTRODUCTION / ATTACHING THE CONTROL HEAD
Introduction to CASE ASSEMBLY
The Piranha Portable is available in several different configurations. You may have purchased the portable case complete with a Piranha unit ready for operation. A Piranha control head you already own may also be used with the portable case. The Piranha Portable contains the portable case, a removable power cable, transducer with 15 feet of cable, the suction cup transducer mounting kit, and various connecting hardware. This manual serves for all applications, so there may be some minor differences between the manual and the actual hardware included, depending on the configuration you purchased. Piranha Portables are sold with the Piranha 1, 2, 2x, 4, 4x Control heads. The PTC Portable Piranha kit is adaptable to all Piranha fishfinders.

INTRODUCTION TO MOUNTING

Hull Once your Piranha Portable is fully assembled, (see the Piranha Portable Case Assembly section for more information) it takes just a few easy steps before you are ready to fish, namely:
Mounting the Transducer Mounting the Case.

Mounting the Transducer

1. 2. 3. Detach the transducer suction cup mount from the back of the case.
Unwind the desired amount of cable needed for the fishing platform and then clip cable on one of the two indentions located on either side. Attach the suction cup to the back of the hull next to the motor. Make sure to keep the transducer at least 20 inches away from the motor.

MOUNTING THE CASE

MOUNTING THE CASE / SURFACE MOUNT
4. When using the suction cup transducer on a moving boat, it is best to secure the transducer cable in case of accidental release. A loose transducer cable can cause damage to itself, your boat, or become entangled in the propeller. Attach the tie down strap to the transducer cable and loop the cable around an immovable object such as a rail or fitting as shown in the illustration.

Tie Down Strap

If desired, mount the case (see Mounting the Case section for more information). Rotate the control head up, power on, and fish (for information on how to use the control head see your Piranha Operations manual.)
Since it has a large rubber footprint, the Piranha Portable case grips to almost any surface. If a more secure attachment is desired, however, there are a couple of different options to choose from:
1. 2. Surface mount (not included) Nylon web strap (not included).
Surface Mount, (not included)

Surface Mount

The Piranha Portable surface mount is an easy to install mount that allows for quick and secure attachment to many different surfaces.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Place the surface mount on the desired surface and make sure there is enough room to rotate the case 180 degrees. Put a mark in each curved slot located on the surface mount. Remove the mount and drill two (3.2mm) pilot holes. Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, attach the two #8 screws and black washers provided in the hardware bags. Hand tighten only; do not use power tools. For best results have the Piranha text on the surface mount face you right side up and horizontal, reading from left to right, as shown in the illustration. This will line up the control head. Align the universal mount on the back of the Piranha Portable case with the surface mount by turning the portable case 90 degrees.
NYLON WEB STRAP / REMOVING THE CASE AFTER USE
7. 8. Press the center section and then twist the Piranha Portable case until it is facing you. Six clicks produces maximum clamping and aligns the control head. For fine-tuning, remove the Piranha Portable case and loosen the two screws. Rotate the surface mount and retighten the screws.
Cross strap for Kayaks and similar craft.
Nylon Web Strap (not included)
There are multiple ways in which to strap your Piranha Portable to your fishing platform:
Friction grooves, located on the left and the right of the Piranha Portable case, are specially designed to grip a standard Through strap to 2 inch nylon web strap. With the for boat seats Top of permanent mounting control head up you can make use of or tubes area,(press slightly to engage Permanent Mounting Clip. the friction grooves by wrapping the Surface mounting using straps nylon web strap around the case. Other ways of strapping that make use of a -inch nylon web strap that is positioned across the suction cup retainer bridge, (see illustration above). This is useful when strapping to a seat or tube.
REMOVING THE CASE AFTER USE
1. 2. 3. 4. With the boat engine off, loosen all cable retainers/clips holding the transducer. Remove the case from the surface mount. Remove the transducer from the surface where it has been mounted. Turn the case over, flip open the rubber cable Transducer Cable retainer by pulling on the tab located at the upper left corner, and wrap the cable back into the cable run, then push the cable under the outer cable clip. If you will not be using the unit again in the near future, remove the batteries to Thumbknob prevent corrosion, and store.

MAINTENANCE AND WARRANTY

MAINTENANCE / REPLACING THE BATTERY POWER CABLE

MAINTENANCE

Your Humminbird Portable fishfinder is designed to provide years of trouble-free operation with virtually no maintenance. Follow the simple procedures below to ensure that your Humminbird Portable continues to deliver top performance. If you are storing the Portable case for an extended period of time, it is best to remove the batteries from the case in case of leakage. If the Portable case comes into contact with salt spray, simply wipe the affected surfaces with a cloth dampened in fresh water. Never leave your Humminbird Portable unit in a closed car or trunk - the extremely high temperatures generated in hot weather can damage the electronics. Repairs should be performed only by authorized Humminbird technicians.
Replacing the Battery Power Cable
Note: You will not have to install the battery power cable before first use, but may need to replace it should it become corroded after prolonged usage in a marine environment.

What you see is what you get.
Understanding a few simple concepts will help you grasp the picture-like images of Humminbird Side Imaging and make you a master of the lake bottom. We've broken down one screen shot several ways; to show that what you see is what you get.

(A) (G)

(H) (F) (B) (C) (H) (D) (E) (C) (H) (B) (D)

(H) (G) (F) (C) (D) (E)

3-D REPRESENTATION OF THE ON-SCREEN VIEW

(H) (C)

CUSTOMIZE YOUR DISPLAY

(A) BOAT LOCATION

The position of your boat in relation to the on-screen image. The on-screen image is a history of what you have passed over.

(B) WATER COLUMN

The dark blue area shows structure and activity between the surface and bottom directly under the path of your boat.
(C) BOTTOM PROFILE (D) FLAT TERRAIN
Reveals depth and attitude of the bottom directly beneath the path of your boat. Neutral shades of blue represent flatter terrain.

(E) DESCENDING TERRAIN

Dark shades of blue represent descending terrain.

(F) RISING TERRAIN

Lighter shades of blue typically represent terrain rising from the bottom. Sometimes, very hard bottoms appear as a whiter shade.

(G) FALLEN LOG

The shortened horizontal shadows indicate structure very close to the bottom of the lake. The angle of the shadow gives away the orientation of the log.

(H) STANDING

Objects standing off the bottom directly below the boat will appear in the water column. Structure to the left or right of the boat will appear as a clearly defined bright shape with an adjacent, dark sonar shadow. This shadow is not caused by light; rather its the lack of sonar return because the object has already reflected the sonar energy. Generally, long shadows indicate the object is tall, and small shadows indicate something short. Its important to note the shadow will often tell you more about the object than the primary sonar reflection.
Take control of Humminbird Side Imaging with more options than ever.
Adjust Sensitivity: Fine-tune your sonar for the best returns in any water condition. Adjust Sharpness: Tweak display to enhance edges and detail in any light. Adjust Color: Choose from eight color palettes to give even more flexibility on the water.

MARK WAYPOINTS

Find some structure you want to investigate further? Simply mark it with a waypoint and your Humminbird will save its exact location so you can return any time.
UNDERSTAND THE WATER COLUMN
Reading the image produced by Humminbird Side Imaging is easy. Simply visualize the screen folded in half down the middle (behind the boat). Then, fold the image again at the lowest point of the water column. The dark blue area provides a visual representation of the water column and lake bottom directly below your boat.

Narrow, 20 beam for precise returns. Focuses on the bottom, and fish holding close to structure. Coverage of an area equal to 1/3 your depth.

Ready. Aim. SwitchFire.

With two unique modes you have complete control to adjust with the fishing conditions, making our downlooking sonar an even more valuable fishfinding tool. With SwitchFire Sonar youll never fish the same way again. Just another way Humminbird is simply, clearly, better.

MAX MODE

Watch as the sonar returns explode from the screen in amazing detail. Youll see the tiniest subsurface objecteven thermoclines and water currentsfor complete underwater coverage.

DualBeam PLUS Sonar

Two beams combine great detail and a wide coverage area.
Precision, 20 beam for high accuracy returns of fish, structure and bottom profile. Wide, 60 beam provides ample search area for fish and bait fish. View beams separately, side-by-side, or blended together for the complete picture. Coverage of an area equal to your depth.

CLEAR MODE

Time Variable Gain (TVG) software sifts through sonar returns to display only fish and structure. Great for fishing in shallow and rough water, or reducing undesired clutter in the water column.

QuadraBeam PLUS Sonar

A full 90 coverage area gives you a major advantage.
DualBeam PLUS 20 and 60 beams scan below the boat. Two fan-shaped 35 beams sweep to the left and right. Gives precise fish placement to the left, right, or below your boat. Unique display lets you see to the sides and directly below in two separate views. Search an area equal to TWICE your depth, revealing even more fish and structure.
THREE NEW COLOR PALETTES give even more flexibility on the water to deal with overcast or full-sun conditions.

System Network

Humminbirds 1100, 900, 800 and 700 Series fishfinders are completely upgradeable and expandable, giving you advanced capabilities from bow to stern. Fishin Buddy

Use it on your boat, your buddys boat, a dock, or even a oat tube. If youre near water, Fishin Buddy shnders are your best friend. The ultimate in portability, you can clamp your Fishin Buddy almost anywhere, with no rigging or wiring, or even a transducer to mount.

NO-RIG MOUNT

Fishin is always more fun with a buddy.
Dont forget the high-resolution monochrome and color displays, SideFinding Sonar, and easy One-Touch control. All there to get you hooking into sh faster. The 24-inch transducer tube housing reaches the water from most small or mid-size boats; certain models feature a telescoping 40-inch transducer. Finally, the whole thing is powered by just six AA batteries for hours of fun and enjoyment.
With the multi-directional clamp mount on each Fishin Buddy you can quickly and easily mount it nearly anywhere, in any orientation. Best of all, there are no wires or rigging, period.

POINT AND CAST

SideFinding : Exclusive SideFinding Sonar spots fish all around your boat, out to 120 feet. Simply turn it in the direction you want to search. And with its narrow cone, when you see a fish onscreen, your transducer is pointing directly at it, so you know exactly where to cast.

DUAL FREQUENCY SONAR

Cast a wide net or focus on the bottom, its up to you. The 240 kHz beam has a 19 coverage area to detect more fish. A narrower, kHz beam provides greater resolution and detail in deeper water.
Double your view of a specific depth range and rotate the dial to change the area youre zooming into while youre viewing it. Changing on the fly has never been easier.
The perfect hardware for hard water.
The powerful DualBeam Sonar gives you coverage options, and the customizable target line will keep you in the bite zone. Bundle up and get ready: the ICE Series is here.
TARGET LINE EXCLUSIVE TO ICE 55
Are the fish active at a particular spot in the water column? Use the Target Line to find out the exact depth of any point on the flasher dial. A purple line on the display shows you where the activity is.

Humminbird Exclusive

Radios/HDR
Reliable communication on the water isnt a luxury, its a necessity. Humminbird VHF Radios deliver that and more: theyre simple to operate, with clear voice transmission and rugged, durable construction.
Your lifeline on the water.
Theyre even totally submersible, compliant with JIS-7 water resistance standards for marine use. Access all U.S., International and Canadian marine channels, monitor multiple channels or an entire band. Choose between rechargeable handheld models, or the xed mount model with Digital Selective Calling (DSC Class D) for sending distress signals or exchanging position data with other boats. Powerful (up to 25 watts of transmission power), easy to use, durable and waterproof, theyre ready whenever you need them. Humminbird Digital Depth Gauges give you instant, reliable depth readings even at speeds of up to 70 mph, and can alert you to both deep and shallow water. Installation in any existing 2-18 opening is easy, and they wire to the ignition to automatically turn on. We didnt stop there: the display reads in feet, meters or fathoms, and you can pick a color to complement your boats gauges.

Stick-On Transducer

The stick-on transducer is installed on the bottom of the hull by using Very High Bond (VHB) tape to provide both a super-easy installation and improved high-speed readings versus transom mounting.

3 In 1 Transducer

Bronze 3 in 1 transducers combine sonar, temperature and speed sensor into one unit. Not recommended for trailered boats. Professional installation recommended. 30 ft cable and hardware included.

Ice Transducer

Replacement Ice Flasher Transducer can also be used to convert any portable unit into an ice-ready fishfinder.

Fishfinder Switch

Fishfinder switches connect two fishfinders to one transducer. Ideal for directing output from one transducer to a bow station or a second helm.

Transducer Switch

Transducer switches connect two transducers to one fishfinder. Ideal for switching between the standard transducer and accessory transducer such as WideSide.
Transducer Extension Cable
Extension cables add extra length to the standard transducer cable. Available in a variety of lengths, they simply plug-in to the existing transducer and your fishfinder.

Speed Sensor

Speed sensor is compatible with many Humminbird fishfinders, and provides digital readings of speed through water, and activates the triplog feature that shows time, distance and average speed. Readings are from 2 to 70 mph. 20 ft cable and hardware included.

Speed/Temperature Sensor

The speed and temperature sensor combines two of the most popular accessory inputs into one compact transom mount unit. Monitors temperature from 25F to 99F and speed from 2 to 70 mph. 20 ft cable and hardware included.

Temperature Sensor

Temperature sensors offer quick response for monitoring water surface temperature or live well temperature. 20 ft cable and hardware included.

Power Cable

Power cables offer a plug on one end and soldered bare leads on the other. The length can be extended with 18awg multi-strand wire. Power connection should be made to a fuse panel, or through inline fuse holder (not included) if made directly to the battery. 6 ft cable included. PC-10 PC-10 PC-10 PC-10 PC-10 PC-10 PC-11
