2709 Lovely Lace Making

with Alix Graham-Michel
Alix Graham Michel joined Sue with wonderful tips for sewing and embroidering lace. The viewers got to take a look at a fantastic, vintage lace cabinet that Sue has in her living room. She and Herb were in a shop that specialized in vintage clothing and the lady and gentlemen who owned the shop were in their 80s and retiring. As Sue was Ooohing and Ahhhing about the hand made bobbin lace in the cabinet, the lady asked if she would like to buy the whole cabinet, with the contents. She was determined to place it in a new home, where it would be loved! Sue couldnt resist! She eventually plans to donate it to Kent State Museum in Ohio.

Alixs Lace Sewing/Embroidery Tips:
You need to determine if the lace embroidery is designed to be sewn on water soluble stabilizer alone, or if it needs tulle or organza underneath. Free standing lace can be sewn on Fabric Solvy, which is a water soluble stabilizer. The lace ornaments are beautiful especially when stitched with a matching bobbin thread. Here, Alix stitched the ornaments in gold metallic thread!
Select needle stop down so the needle will stop down and the foot will lift so you can pivot. The table cloth is nice and neutral with the lace inserts. By placing different colored table cloth underneath, you can use it for different holidays. Red for Christmas, pink for Easter etc. Enchantment in Free standing Lace was used in the tablecloth. When embroidering these designs, trim the stabilizer to about 1/2 outside the embroidery when the embroidery is complete. Then place on the fabric. Snap on your open toe foot and select a satin stitch. Satin stitch the lace in place onto the fabric. When it is complete, place in a mesh laundry bag and wash. Then trim the excess fabric out from behind the lace, using a Havels bent blunt scissors.
The green lace insert is beautiful on a purchased t-shirt. You stitch them out on water soluble stabilizer and then wash to remove the stabilizer. Three designs were used around the neck and others on the sleeves. Around the neck, place the lace, and zig zag in place. Then trim the fabric from the back of the lace. Alix created a godet in the sleeve by dividing the sleeve bottom in half. She then cut a slit in the sleeve and separated it to create a space. Thread with 40 wt. rayon thread on top and in the bobbin. Select a small zig zag or lightening bolt zig zag and stitch the lace in place.
For a nightgown, she took one design and in her software, turned it in to an endless design to create yards of lace trim.
Next, Alix showed a purple jacket with Cactus Punch Sig 35 Battenberg lace. The design was stitched out in a ne weight coats and clark cotton thread top and bobbin with the purple color. She used an organza fabric behind the lace. Alix stitched the battenburg lace to the jacket lapels with a wing needle and an entredeux stitch.
Sues sweater was embroidered with designs from Herimoom Insertion Embroidery by Connie Palmer. These designs use organza or tulle to create the look of lace shaped insertions.
Alix had a great gift idea. Stitch two lace heart designs on netting. Trim up to the edge. Stitch the two hearts together and stuff with potpourri.
This blue linen has cutwork on the corners. It is from Husqvarna Viking Embroidery Collection 201, Floral Cutwork. Richeliu bars require a heavy tear away stabilizer. When your Husqvarna Viking Embroidery machine stops for you to cut, cut the fabric but not stabilizer. This is easzy to do with Havels Ultimate Embroider Scissors with blunt tips.
The peach top had lace stitched on organza. From Lovely lace on Tulle. then the lace was sewn to the hem edge of the top.

Embroidered Wall Plaques

with Julie Mallory
Julie Mallory joined Sue to show how to make cute Embroidered Wall Plaques. When Sue presented a program in Salem, Oregon, an excited Husqvarna Viking owner, Leslie Coleman Zeigen brought her these clever embroidered felt hangings. She makes them for gifts and momentos, for many of her friends. To create the embroidered wall plaque, in 4D Embroidery Software, change hoop size for the nished size you would like. Choose a font. Be sure it will allow you to generate the size font you would like. Leslie gives credit to the author of the phrase whenever possible. You could also create it free motion or with lettering built into your sewing machine. After you have your phrase complete, color sort it down to one color. Send to your Husqvarna Viking machine. Thread with 40 wt. rayon thread and bobbin thread. Stitch out on felt. Cut out with pinking shears and mount on another piece of felt. Add a hanger and/or tassel as desired.

2608 Sheer Window Inserts

Sue wanted to let the light in while keeping people from looking in. Patti Jo thought that the windows should tell a story when you walk up to the front door, about the people, who live in the house. Each panel has a thought, about Sue and Herb.
Patti Jo Larson, Sue Hausmann and Julie Mallory
Begin by selecting fabrics. Vintage pieces of fabric or new fabrics can be used. Sheers will give you more of a see through effect, while a voile will offer more privacy. Organdy is also a good choice, has nice body. You can see through cotton voile but it isnt as stable to embroider. Cut the fabric a little larger than your window panel. For the embroidered pieces, be sure to allow enough fabric to hoop. Patti likes to use Solvy soup to stiffen the fabric for embroidery. To make Solvy soup, collect your water soluble stabilizer scraps. Dissolve them in a jar of water. Paint the liquid onto the fabric, on a protected surface, and allow to dry.

Quilting design:

Patti Jo chose a Crazy patch embroidery design from Husqvarna Viking Embroidery Collection #130. Two repeats of the design t in the Mega Hoop. Instead of piecing in quilting fabrics like you usually do, Patti Jo stitched it all in one color, on her white fabric. If you dont have an embroidery machine yet, you could also use decorative stitches.

Lace to Lace Panel:

This lace panel uses the Martha Pullen lace to lace technique. Lace to Lace means sewing different pieces of lace together, to form one large panel. Insertion lace is best, because it is straight on both sides. Snap on Edge Joining Foot. Select Bridging stitch #A31 or zig zag. Place one edge of the lace on each side of the ange of the foot. Stitch the pieces together. Continue adding lace until you have enough to cover the window pane. To block the lace, press with starch to the exact size. Allow to dry.

Cross Stitch

Patti Jo chose a cross stitch design. Hoop your fabric with a water soluble stabilizer.

Seasons Window:

Julie Mallory created the different seasons window inserts in the Husqvarna Viking 4D Software. The rst one is for Easter. Using clip art, she quickly turned it into embroidery! Heres how!

Patti Jo stitch sparklers for Fourth of July from the Husqvarna Viking Sparklers #138 collection.
Cut Totally Stable the size of the window pane glass. Iron it onto the back of nished embroidery. That will be pattern to stitch satin stitch around to create the border. You can create a border in your 4D Software by creating a hoop, the size of your glass. Then create a satin stitch border that size. You can also satin stitch using your pre-programmed satin stitch in your machine. Snap on your Clear Open Toe Foot and stitch around the edge of the Totally Stable pattern. trim excess away. Patti Jo stitched a beautiful hemstitch fram/border on Sues Inserts. Thread with ne thread on top and bobbin. Insert a wing needle. Select stitch D4 and stitch around the panel. Trim up to the outside row of hemstitched holes. Some other suggestions that Patti Jo had for decorating window panes were starching on doilies or crocheted embroidery decorations. Use what you have or create your own.

Applying your Window Panels:
To apply your panels to the glass, spray with Sulky KK2000 Temporary Spray Adhesive to place it. Use sponge brush and wet the fabric completely with liquid starch. Use a regular brush and poke into corners. Allow to dry. To remove, just pull off, and wash the windows to remove the starch residue.
