ORACLE DATABASE MIGRATION SERVICES FOR AIX AND LINUX
Users face a number of challenges when they seek to migrate standalone Oracle databases (or those used by a packaged application such as Oracle E-Business Suite, SAP or PeopleSoft) from non-IBM Microsoft Windows and UNIX to IBM AIX and Linux. The difculty is that traditional methods to migrate data do not work in the time users have available. The speed at which data can be accessed and the rate at which it grows are key factors in todays world. If either is limited, business growth can be severely impacted. Database migrations can give you the opportunity to: Maximize the value of Oracle software licenses by using dedicated database servers, Attain more processing power at a reduced cost. Leverage new database features like grid support, column level security or ultra large database support, and Save by consolidating existing servers and replacing them with fewer, more powerful ones. The IBM Migration Factory has developed a suite of comprehensive services for Oracle users that addresses the fundamental issues associated with reliably migrating databases to IBM AIX or Linux with nominal or no downtime. The option to simultaneously upgrade from one version of Oracle to another, or convert to DB2, is also available. These services leverage years of experience in planning and performing Oracle database migration. Copyright IBM Corporation 2006
CHALLENGE
Every Oracle database migration is unique. It is imperative to gather the detailed information required to effectively size and plan a successful migration. This is greatly assisted by tools used to interrogate your databases to extract the necessary information in an automated way, which saves time and helps maintain consistent and accurate data. Some considerations in Oracle migrations include: Oracle versions: like-to-like migration or potential upgrades Quantity and size of databases Associated applications or packages Your downtime restrictions and user requirements Available servers and storage during a conversion for temporary storage and testing Use of storage management software Network characteristics Your policies
PLANNING FOR SUCCESS
Help reduce disruption with proven services for businesses with nominal downtime. Robust methodologies help reduce risk and help maintain data integrity. IBM hardware-assisted data migration services
Helping simplify data migration to IBM TotalStorage systems with minimal complexity and disruption
IBM TotalStorage solutionswith their robust function and signicant priceperformance benetscan help businesses simplify their infrastructure and move to on demand computing. IBM TotalStorage solutions are designed to provide the exibility to respond to customer needs, simplify storage management and provide automation that can reduce staffing needs. Whether moving from another vendors storage to a highly scalable IBM TotalStorage solution or helping clients upgrade, move, consolidate or replace existing IBM storage, data migration can be a challenge. The need for safe, secure and nondisruptive data transfer is a growing concern for most IT departments today. Many IT groups postpone justiable upgrades because they are concerned that the upgrade process itself might disrupt ongoing business operations.
IBM TotalStorage hardware-assisted data migration services, part of the family of IBM migration offerings, can help simplify data migration in open systems and mainframe environments while addressing issues of complexity, disruption, system performance, host availability and data integrity. It combines a migration appliance tool, utilizing patent-pending IBM technology, with the experience of IBM services professionals. Together they can help speed data migration to IBM storage systems, including the new IBM TotalStorage DS8000 and DS6000 series. IBM services professionals can help manage your data migration by: Jointly building a plan for data migration activities
Performing a migration and moving data from source disks to new target disks Reviewing volume migration records, validating results and verifying connectivity from the new disks to host systems Removing the data migration hardware appliance tool
Why data migration services?
Data migration is becoming an increasingly important issue when switching from an alternate vendors storage platform, or upgrading, moving, consolidating and/or replacing existing storage. IT environments with a mixture of application servers and 24x7 service levels can make scheduling and executing data migration a complex, expensive and time-consuming task.
Installing and conguring a data migration hardware appliance tool and infrastructure-enabling components, when needed
Ive been in this business for twenty-ve years, and the support we get from IBM has been pivotal to the success were achieving in meeting our customers demands.
Steve White, Vice President of Information Systems Services, ISO
Many companies do not have an IT staff with the skills, experience and the bandwidth to make a smooth data migration transition. They want to be assured that the migration they need will be accomplished quickly and safely, without the risk of data corruption or lossand with minimal outage. Data is migrated by using a private SAN storage and hosts in FC and small computer system interface (SCSI) environments, providing transparent logical unit number (LUN) level copy of data and nondata using a private storage area network (SAN), switches and routers.
Generally no more intrusive than a bre channel switch, the data migration appliance is designed for easy installation and IBM services professionals can easily connect it to a host systems storage interfaces. Normally, no changes to customer host systems or SAN fabric are required. The datamoving elements of the data migration hardware appliance report the source storage systems vital product data. Because data does not ow through the management interface, no external access exists to the proprietary data being migrated, helping to maintain data integrity. The data migration hardware appliance is designed to be tuned for maximum host system performance to help reduce the performance impact of a data migration process on end users running their applications. The appliance is also designed to take advantage of multipath redundancy between itself, hosts and storage systems. If a problem occurs, an appliance can be removed from the environment and a system can be returned to its original conguration.
Data migration for open systems
The IBM data migration hardware appliance for open systems is a half-height, rack-mounted device with bre channel (FC) switches, patch panels, an Ethernet hub, a management console, eight data migration engines and dual power distributionall packaged in a rugged box on wheels. There is also a lite, smaller version of the appliance based on the same technology. These tools are designed to enable local and remote migration among multivendor
positioned between the customers SAN and storage, while mapping source LUNs to target LUNs. For online migrations, the migration appliance routes all online I/O from host to source LUNs and target LUNs and copies data from source LUN to target LUN. It masks target LUNs from the host during migration and offers support for fully redundant congurations. Host agents need not be installed and removed from production servers.
Recent IBM TotalStorage data migration engagements Industry
Travel
Challenge
The client outgrew its three-vendor storage environment and needed the capability to support corporate growth while reducing storage maintenance costs. The client needed to consolidate part of its storage infrastructure to improve efficiency, performance and return on its IT investment.
Solution
IBM upgraded the clients IT environment and consolidated storage on its IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server Model 800.
The simplied storage environment saves operating costs and system maintenance costs after three years, while doubling server capacity to accommodate signicant data growth. The client was able to leverage the advanced function technology and cost benets of IBM TotalStorage. IBM provided rapid data migration services to help avoid additional lease expenses while enabling data integrity. Estimated cost savings have been projected, as well as improved performance, reliability, data management and scalability for future growth.
Manufacturing
IBM congured several IBM TotalStorage storage systems and bre switches, and migrated data to them quickly.
Government
The client was looking for a solution to increase data sharing across locations and a storage infrastructure to support it.
Two IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Servers (ESS) became the sole disk solution, with backups being performed over the SAN for all attached servers. Data was quickly migrated from the existing EMC disk to an IBM disk. IBM, working with the IBM Business Partner, successfully implemented a new solution and moved 150 mod 3 volumes in less than two hours.
Healthcare
The client wanted to replace EMC disks with IBM TotalStorage ESS disks, leverage its advanced technology features and rapidly migrate the date within a four hour outage window with the help of a specic IBM Business Partner.
The client has beneted from increased system throughput and storage growth for data and information.
Data migration for mainframe systems
The IBM data migration hardware appliance for mainframe systems is based on an IBM S/390 Multiprise 3000 enterprise server with the IBM z/OS operating system, and is equipped with up to 22 ESCON adapters for data migration use. This appliance is
mounted in a standard 30-inch rack on wheels, uses standard 110V AC power and requires no communication connections. It uses a specialized preloaded software utility called FDRPAS from Innovation Data Processing that is designed to move data with little or no degradation to host processing cycles for IBM mainframe systems.
This IBM service is designed to allow the migration of MVS, OS/390 and z/OS volumes, including SYSRES volumes, other system volumes, open catalog volumes, application data volumes, IBM CICS volumes, data volumes, IBM DB2 volumes, time-sharing
option (TSO) volumes, systemmanaged storage (SMS) volumes and work volumes. The migration appliance also supports parallel access volumes (PAV) and consistency groups. Special considerations and planning are required to process volumes containing active local page data sets. The data migration appliance is designed for easy installation. IBM services professionals can simply connect it to a host systems storage interfaces. If only IBM FICON adapters or ports are available on the target storage, the IBM team can provide temporary ESCON adapters for use during the migration. Because the data migration appliance can be congured before it is placed in a data path, the time to physically attach and remove it can be as little as fteen minutes. Because data does not ow through the management interface, no external access exists to the proprietary data being migrated, helping to maintain data integrity.
volume activity when volumes are moved. The data migration appliance is also designed so that if a problem occurs, it can be removed from the environment and the system can be returned to its original conguration. It is also designed to help reduce or eliminate the impact of a power failure or initial program load (IPL) during migration from source volumes. The volumes being copied would need to be restartedbut all volumes previously swapped before the event would be on the new disk subsystem and no action is necessary.
Migrations normally occur with minimum dependency on IT staffs. Because the CPU cycles or MIPs used to perform migrations are on the data migration hardware appliance tool and not on customer systems, users can continue to run their applications as before. Another advantage of the IBM hardware-assisted migration approach is that once an online migration begins, its speed can be decreased or increased to meet specic processing needs. For example, if applications running during a migration require additional resources, IBM can slow down the migration process. IBM can also help when specic volumes of data need to be migrated by a certain deadline or within a specic time frame. In addition, data can be moved, application by application, unlike most competing solutions that usually migrate from one subsystem to another. Above all, IBM hardware-assisted data
Advantages of using IBM data migration services
Using this hardware-assisted approach and its prescribed tools, IBM can deliver migration services for both open systems and mainframe data by transferring data between source and target volumes with host servers online or offline. These services can help speed data
migration services can help businesses gain a competitive advantage and reap the benets of IBM storage technologies by enabling essential storage upgradeswithout the complexities and risks of traditional data migration approaches.
The speed of data migration depends on a number of factors: the number of channels provided for the source and target storage systems, whether data goes through a director and the level of
migration, avoid disruption of production servers and minimize the potential impact on application performance.
Note: Some systems such as VM/ESA and VSE/ESA can be migrated in offline mode only. For details about this mode and other migration issues, please contact your IBM sales representative or IBM Business Partner.

The tools and resources IBM is providing through this program will help the Champion sales force generate more storage systems revenue as a result.
Chris Pyle, President and CEO Champion Solutions Group
IBM storage migration program
An IBM storage migration program is in place to help customers move from EMC to IBM TotalStorage products. It involves a global team of consultants and technologists who are equipped with tools to help customers make the transition. The program uses a threepronged approach: Assessing an on demand infrastructure, evaluating a customers current storage infrastructure and developing a new solution that offers greater performance and helps lower total cost of ownership (TCO)
migration program. As a part of this initiative, IBM Business Partners can engage IBM and include hardwareassisted data migration services in their transactions. These services can also provide IBM Business Partners with potential revenue opportunities for both IBM TotalStorage products and migration services. A number of IBM Business Partners, such as Champion Solutions Group and InfoSystems, Inc., can provide data migration services for open systems and access IBMs tools, services and support (including nancing and incentives). Many IBM Business Partners have already achieved success in delivering these services to their customers. For more information, visit ibm.com/partnerworld/pwhome.nsf/ weblook/sel_sip_storage.html
