If mine is an example this product is faulty in design. It eats hard drives. 1st drive lasted 2.5 months, next one 30 days. As a student, I love the mix of power and relative portability of the ThinkPad Edge 14. However.

Great, except for Hard Drive Currently a law school student and I am loving this laptop. Keyboard is really comfortable. AVOID this laptop Wow, what a disappointment.

The machine stands out on all counts in the price tag - pretty good performance, very good keyboard with trackpoint (which at times goes haywire). I have a Thinkpad T410 from work and I bought an Edge 14" for home.

Would buy again When I went researching my next notebook computer for work, the following features were a "must": Small screen, lightweight.
DJ_Coder 8:50pm on Tuesday, April 13th, 2010
Given the price, a great deal. Have had this laptop only for 2-3 days. lightweight for traveling. Need a full keyboard so texting on phone is out. Tis is very comfortable Comfortable Keyboard","Lightweight".

Its a new design. It has a cool look and a new notebook series. Can be carried easily. In my point of view Lenovo think pad 13 is good to work with.
LandShrk 3:05am on Saturday, March 20th, 2010
I AM REALLY SATISFIED WITH MY THINKPAD EDGE 14" LAPTOP, FULLY LOADED, WINDOWS 7 PRO 64 BIT, 4 GB & 500 GB HARD DRIVE, I CORE 3, IT IS FAST. This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A computing device in accordance with Part 15 of FCC rules. These rules are designed to provide reasonable protection against radio and television interference in a residential installation. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. You can determine whether your equipment is causing interference by turning it off. If the interference stops, it was probably caused by the computer or one of its peripheral devices. If your equipment does cause interference to radio or television reception, you can try to correct the interference as follows: Re-orient the receiving antenna until the interference stops. Move the equipment to the other side of the receiving antenna. Move your equipment farther away from the receiving antenna. Plug your equipment into a different wall outlet. Replace any non-FCC-certified components or non-shielded cables and connectors.

To replace your hard disk with your new CMS hard disk drive for your IBM ThinkPad 380 computer, follow these instructions. If youve used the EasyMove software to transfer your data from your original drive to your new drive, youre ready to exchange your original and new drives. If you dont have EasyMove, you should back-up your data using whatever method is best for you (floppies, tape, network, removable drive, etc.).

Introduction

Preserve your data
Remove the old disk drive
A. Make sure your computer is turned Off. Turn the computer over with the battery in the front right corner (towards you.) Remove the battery, then use a small Phillips screwdriver to remove the seven screws shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1

Medium Short
Follow these steps to remove and replace your old drive. A. Make sure your computer is turned Off. Turn the computer over with the battery in the front right corner (towards you.) Remove the battery, then use a small Phillips screwdriver to remove the seven screws shown in Figure 1.
B. Turn the computer back over with the back panel facing you. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2

C. Turn the front of the computer towards you and lift open the screen. Lift the front edge of the computer to raise the cover and keyboard. Use care to lift the keyboard as far as you can. Before you can disconnect the two keyboard cables, you need to disconnect the safety strap by sliding it to the right to disengage it from the chassis. Disconnect the two cables as shown in Figure 3 using the techniques shown in Figure 4.

D. Remove the three screws as shown in Figure 5 and save them for reuse.

Figure 5

E. Disconnect the CD-ROM cable from the board, remove the bracket covering the CD-ROM, then slide the CD-ROM to the left to remove it from the chassis.
F. Slide the disk drive to the right as shown in Figure 6 to unmate it from the chassis. Lift it out of the computer.

Figure 6

Install the new drive Install your new disk drive by following these steps: A. Slide the new disk drive into place in the chassis, reversing step 2F, above. B. Replace the CD-ROM buy reversing the process in Step 2E, above. Replace the bracket, making sure the small tabs on the right are under the edge of the case. Reattach the cable to its connector. It may be necessary to move the metal shield around the connector slightly to allow the connector to fully mate. C. Hold the keyboard in place and reattach the two cables to their connectors on the board using the techniques in Figure 4. Replace the safety strap. D. Lower the keyboard/cover and snap it into place along the front and side edges. Replace the screws previously removed in Step 2A & B. When replacing the screws on the bottom, follow the notes in Figure 1 for the locations of the short (2), medium (4), and long (1) length screws.
If you used EasyMove to transfer your data, your installation is complete. Turn on your computer and youre back at work. If you didnt use EasyMove, insert a bootable floppy disk (See Bootable Floppy Disks, following) and turn the power on. The computer will automatically determine the drive type for your new disk. From the A: prompt, type FDISK followed by the Return key. Choose option 1 (Create DOS partition or logical drive), then choose option 1, (Create the primary DOS partition), accept the maximum size and activate it. Due to the limitations of Windows 3.1 and early versions of Win 95, the maximum partition size is 2,048 MB. If your new disk is larger than this, youll then need to create extended partitions (D and/or E drives) to use the remaining capacity of the disk. Choose option 1 (Create DOS partition or logical drive). Choose option 2 (Create extended DOS partition), then accept the defaults for partition size and logical drive size. Repeat this step to utilize the full capacity of your new disk. When the primary DOS partition is created (and any extended partitions, if required), reboot your system. From the A: prompt, type FORMAT C:/S followed by the Enter key. This will format the primary DOS partition and copy the system files to it making it a bootable drive. If you have an extended partition, type FORMAT D: (or FORMAT E:) followed by the Return key to format the D/E drive. Remove the floppy disk, and when you restart your system, it will boot from your new C drive.

Setting up your new drive
Once your drive is partitioned and formatted, you should restore your operating system (Windows) and your data from the backup you did in Step 1. Note: If your original hard drive only had a single partition (you only had a C: drive) and your new drive has multiple partitions, your CD-ROM may have been moved to the next available drive letter after your new hard drive partitions. If you have CD-ROM based applications installed (those that require the CD-ROM to run), these applications may be expecting to find your CD-ROM drive at D:, which may have changed. If you have problems running these applications, verify the drive letter of your CD-ROM, and reinstall the CD-ROM applications if the CD-ROM drive is at a new drive letter. Remember, perform this step of making partitions and formatting them only if you didnt use EasyMove to move your data. Review Use EasyMove (if available) to transfer your data or If you dont use EasyMove, back up your data. Make sure the power is off, and remove the battery. Remove seven screws from the bottom of the computer. Remove two screws from the rear of the computer. Lift the cover/keyboard and disconnect the two cables. Remove the CD-ROM and support bracket. Remove the disk drive.
Install the new disk drive. Reinstall the CD-ROM and keyboard. Reinstall the screws. Replace the battery. If you didnt use EasyMove, partition and format the disk, then restore your operating system and data from your backup. Bootable Floppy Disks
To be able to boot (start) your computer without a hard disk, youll need a floppy disk with certain files and applications on it to boot from. A bootable floppy disk does not come with your computer, and you have to make your own before you remove your hard disk. From the Settings menu, open the control panel window, then open the Add/Remove Programs icon. Select the Start-Up Disk tab, then click the Create Disk button. Having problems? Review the steps for removal or installation, then call our Technical Support Department at 1(800) 555-1671. The keyboard is opened. The specified time has elapsed from the last operation with the keyboard, mouse, hard disk drive, parallel connector, or diskette drive; or the AC Adapter is plugged in. The time is specified by Suspend Timer in the ThinkPad Features program. The battery condition is low. The battery power indicator blinks orange. In the ThinkPad features program, the computer can be set to Hibernate when battery becomes low. The default setting is suspend. Either the PS2 OFF or PS2 SUSpend command is set in the ThinkPad Features program. Events that cause the computer to exit or resume suspend mode: (Resume) The LCD is opened. (Resume) The keyboard is closed. (Resume) The real time clock alarm is signaled. (Resume) The ring indicator (RI) is signaled by a serial or PCMCIA device. (Resume) The Fn key is pressed. (Resume) An external keyboard key is pressed while operating with ac power. (Exit) Timer conditions are satisfied for entering hibernation mode.
following occurs: The system status, RAM, VRAM, and setup data are stored on the hard disk. The system is powered off. Notes: 1. In the ThinkPad Features program, the computer can be set to suspend hibernate while docked. 2. The computer cannot enter hibernation mode when: It is powered with ac power and a communication PC card is used. The computer is attached to a DOCK I. Any of the following events can cause the computer to enter hibernation mode: Hibernation mode is requested by the Fn key (Fn+F12). Timer conditions are satisfied in suspend mode. A critical low battery condition occurs. The PS2 HIBernation command is set in the ThinkPad Features program.
The following event causes the computer to exit hibernation mode: The power-on switch is turned on. When power is turned on, the hibernation history in the boot record on the hard disk is recognized and system status is restored from the hard disk to resume operation.
Port Replicator Power Overload: If power shutdowns occur intermittently when using PCMCIA-2 devices via a port replicator, suspect a current overload. Some PCMCIA devices use much power; if the maximum usage of each device occurs simultaneously, the total current will exceed the limit, thereby causing a power shutdown. Isolate this problem by removing one of the devices, and use the computer under the same condition to see whether a power shutdown occurs. Do this procedure for all devices; then determine the cause.

Check the Model There are two models of 760E: Both come with an FDD built-in, but only one model is upgradable with an internal CD-ROM drive. The nonupgradable 760E model has the FDD built-in space that is thick enough to install only an FDD. The upgradable 760E model has the FDD built-in space that is thick enough to install a CD-ROM. Verify the 760E model you are servicing before ordering FRU parts. FRUs for the CD-ROM upgradable model are listed in the 760E (CD Upgradable Type) 760ED parts list. (See Model 760E (CD Upgradable Type) or 760ED on page 357.)

If either the pointing stick or the click button does not work, do the following actions one at a time to correct the problem. Do not replace a nondefective FRU. Reseat the keyboard card cables. Replace the keyboard card cables. Replace the keyboard card assembly. ThinkPad 765D (9546), 765L (9547)
Replace the video card. Replace the system board.
Do the following to isolate the problem to a controller, drive, or diskette. A scratch, write-enabled, nondefective 2HD diskette is required. Note: The data on the diskette is altered during this test. Back up the data on the diskette, or use a blank formatted diskette.
FDD-1 represents a diskette drive in the UltraBay. FDD-2 represents the port replicator, expansion unit, or diskette drive attached through the external diskette drive connector.
Warning: Make sure that the diskette does not have more than one label attached to it. Multiple labels can cause damage to the drive or cause the drive to fail. Do the following to select the test device: 1. Select the advanced diagnostics mode and select Tool; then select FDD-1 or FDD-2 and press the Spacebar. A mark appears next to the selected icon. 2. Press Enter. 3. Insert the blank diskette when instructed. 4. Type Y (Yes) to the question on the screen. 5. Select FDD-1 or FDD-2 and press Enter to run the diskette drive test. 6. If the controller test detects an error, FRU code 10 appears. Replace the system board. 7. If the controller test runs without errors, the drive read/write tests start automatically. 8. If the drive test detects an error, FRU code 50 for FDD-1; or 51 for FDD-2 appears. If the diskette itself is known to be good, replace the drive. 9. If FDD-2 test detects an error, move the drive to the computer's diskette drive connector directly, if possible, and test it again as FDD-1.
If no errors occur in the FDD-1 position, the drive is not defective. Go to Port Replicator Checkout on page 428 to isolate the replicator problem. 10. If the drive is attached through an Expansion Unit, go to the service manual of the Expansion Unit to isolate the problem. 11. If the drive is attached through a Diskette Drive Attachment Unit, replace the unit. 12. If no error occurred when testing the formatted diskette, suspect the diskette that was used when the customer reported the problem. If an error occurs when the external diskette drive is attached through the external diskette drive connector and there is not a diskette drive in the UltraBay, reseat the connector on the video card. If the error persists, reseat the external diskette drive connector. If the error persists, replace the following FRUs one at a time: 1. External diskette drive kit 2. Video card 3. External diskette drive connector

codes displayed on the screen to diagnose failures. If more than one error code is displayed, begin the diagnosis with the first error code. The cause of the first error code can cause subsequent error codes to be false. If no error code is displayed, see if the error symptom is listed in the Symptom-to-FRU Index on page 542.
Port Replicator Problems: If you suspect a problem with the Port Replicator, see Common Devices Checkout on page 681. How to Diagnose Multiple FRUs: If the adapter or device has more than one FRU, the error code could be caused by any one of them. Before replacing multiple FRUs, try removing or exchanging each FRU, one by one in the designated sequence, to see if the symptoms change.
What to Do First: Include the following in the parts
exchange form or parts return form that is attached to the returned FRU: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Name and phone number of servicer Date of service Date when part failed Date of purchase Failure symptoms, error codes appearing on display, and beep symptoms Procedure index and page number in which failing FRU was detected Failing FRU name and part number Machine type, model number, BIOS level, and serial number Customer's name and address
Before checking problems with the computer, determine whether the damage is covered under the warranty by referring to the following: Note for Warranty: 1. Check the ECAs (Engineering Change Announcements) of the device that pertain to the system failure before billing the customer. 2. During the warranty period, the customer may be responsible for repair costs if the computer damage was caused by misuse, accident, modification, unsuitable physical or operating environment, or improper maintenance by the customer. The following list provides some common items that are not covered under warranty and some symptoms that may indicate that the system was subjected to stresses beyond normal use:
The following is not covered under warranty: LCD panel cracked from the application of excessive forces, shock, or from being dropped Scratched (cosmetic) parts Cracked or broken plastic parts, broken latches, broken pins, or broken connectors caused by excessive force Damage caused by liquid spilled into the system Damage caused by improper insertion of a PCMCIA Card or the installation of an incompatible card Damage caused by foreign material in the diskette drive or UltraBay II Diskette drive damage caused by the diskette drive cover being pressed or by the insertion of diskettes with multiple labels Damaged or bent diskette eject button CD-ROM drive damage caused by excessive force, by shock, or by being dropped Fuses blown by the attachment of a nonsupported device Forgotten computer or hard disk password (making the computer or hard disk unusable) If the following symptoms are present, they may indicate damage caused by nonwarranted activity: Missing parts might be a symptom of unauthorized service or modification. HDD spindles can become noisy from being subjected to excessive force or from being dropped. I9990303 errors can be caused by exposure to strong magnetic fields.

computer cannot enter suspend mode. 5. The computer does not enter suspend mode when the eject lever of the UltraBay II pops out. Events that cause the computer to resume operation from suspend mode: The LCD is opened. The real time clock alarm is signaled. The ring indicator (RI) is signaled by a serial or PCMCIA device. The Fn key is pressed. An external keyboard key is pressed while the computer is connected to ac power. Computer also exits suspend mode when timer conditions are satisfied for entering hibernation mode.
For the Windows NT User Windows NT users cannot create a hibernation file in a system that uses the NTFS format system (the default format). If you want to use hibernation mode, you should reinstall Windows NT with a FAT format system. Note: Before using hibernation mode, you need a hibernation file. In hibernation mode, the following occurs: The system status, RAM, VRAM, and setup data are stored on the hard disk. The system is powered off. Notes: 1. In the ThinkPad Configuration program, the computer can be set to suspend/hibernate while docked. 2. The computer cannot enter hibernation mode when: It is powered with ac power and a communication PC Card is used. It is attached to a Dock I. When the eject lever of the UltraBay II pops out. Events that cause the computer to enter hibernation mode: Hibernation mode is requested by the Fn key (Fn+F12). Timer conditions are satisfied in suspend mode. A critically low battery condition occurs.
The PS2 HIBernation command is set in the ThinkPad Configuration program. The computer exits hibernation mode and resumes operation when the power-on switch is turned on. When power is turned on, the hibernation history in the boot record on the hard disk is recognized and system status is restored from the hard disk to resume operation.
The symptom-to-FRU Index lists the symptoms and errors and the possible causes. The most likely cause is listed first. Note: Perform the FRU replacement or actions in the sequence shown in the FRU/Action columns. If replacing a FRU did not solve the problem, put the original part back in the computer. Do not replace a nondefective FRU. This index can also be used to help you decide which FRUs to have available when servicing a computer. Numeric error codes show the errors detected in POST or system operation. In the following error codes, X can be any number. If no codes are available, use narrative symptoms. If the symptom is not listed, go to Undetermined Problems on page 561. Note: For IBM devices not supported by diagnostic codes in the ThinkPad notebook computers, see the manual for that device.

External Diskette Drive Test
Use the following procedure to isolate the diskette problem to a controller, drive or diskette. A scratch, write-enabled 2HD diskette is required. 1. Select the icon FDD on the TEST MENU. By doing this, the controller test and the drive read/write test run. If the controller test detects an error, FRU code 10 appears. In this case, replace the system board. 2. If the controller test run without errors, follow the instructions on the screen and insert a scratch diskette. 3. If the drive test detects an error, FRU code 50 appears. If the diskette media are known to be good, replace the drive or the drive cable.
External Display Self-Test
If the display problem occurs only when using an external display, use the following instructions to correct the problem. Note Before you replace a display, check the following list to see if it is connected correctly. 8506 and 8508 displays must be connected to an Image Adapter/A or an Image-I Adapter/A. 63XX and 85XX systems support either 63XX or 85XX displays. 85XX systems with an XGA-2 adapter support 95XX displays. 95XX systems support either 63XX, 85XX, or 95XX displays. ThinkPad models support either 85XX or 95XX displays. If the screen is rolling, replace the display assembly. If that does not correct the problem, replace FRUs in the following order until the problem goes away: 1. 2. 3. 4. Video card Display adapter (any type) System board Bus adapter (if used)
If the screen is not rolling, run the display self-test as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Power-off the computer and display. Disconnect the display signal cable. Power-on the display. Set the contrast to its maximum position. Set the brightness control to the center detent position. IBM Mobile Systems HMM
Check for the following conditions: You should be able to vary the screen intensity by adjusting the contrast and brightness controls. The screen should be white or light gray, with a black margin (test margin) on the screen. Note: The location of the test margin varies with the type of display. The test margin might be on the top, bottom, or one or both sides. If you do not see a test margin on the screen, replace the display. If there is a test margin on the screen, replace the system board. Note: On ThinkPad Models 700, 700C, 720C, 720C, do the following: 1. Video card 2. System board
