| First of all, let me start by saying that this was the best Christmas gift that I could have gotten. When you purchase this phone. I was extremely excited when I first received this phone. It was really easy to use and there was lots of great apps for the phone, often times free. | |

| Smashing it, especially since it was free from my telecommunications company. iPhone competition, 5.0MP camera, video recorder. Upgradeable storage. The phone was fairly easy to root and install custom ROM. Do the research before you get yourself into something bigger than your comfortable. | |

hanks to everyone who made Bike to Work Week 10 such a resounding success. We had another stellar year, with a 37% increase in participation over 2003. It's been a busy and productive year for Bike to Work Victoria. In addition to organizing the BTWW 10 campaign, we've launched two new initiatives: Team Captain Workshop: Team captains are our regional sales force for BTWW. In February, we launched Bike to Workshop, a two-hour session to help team captains understand how BTWW works, and provide them with tips to encourage and motivate their colleagues. Bike to Workshop: A Community Toolkit: We have developed a one-day workshop to teach other communities how to organize a BTWW program, based on our successful model. We are offering the workshop at ProWalk/ProBike, a major North American conference being held in Victoria, September 8 -10th. Our hope is that the benefits that BTWW has brought to Victoria will be spread to other cities. We will be taking Bike to Workshop on the road this fall. We're looking forward to Bike to Work Week 11. Please join us! David Cubberley, President, Bike to Work Victoria
MESSAGES FROM THE PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Executive Director's Message Since coming on board Bike to Work Victoria last year, I have had the privilege of meeting many of the team captains who make BTWW so successful. I'd like to thank them for their energy, enthusiasm, and commitment. I have heard some great stories of team captains providing bikes, acting as bike buddies, arranging prizes, and planning fun events, just to get their colleagues to try it. We also wouldn't exist without our sponsors. To our long-term sponsors, thank you for your ongoing support and trust. To our new sponsors, welcome and we hope we met your expectations and that you'll be back next year. Thank you to our food and beverage sponsors for making this year's Celebration Stations the best ever. Coffee, smoothies, juice, fruit, burgers, water, and baked goods, combined with friendly, chatty cyclists, made the stations the ultimate BTWW experience. I worked at nine of the stations and I saw a lot of repeat customers! See you next year. Linda Saunders, Executive Director, Bike to Work Victoria

FACTS & FIGURES

Number of new cyclists
Bike to Work Week 10 exceeded the most optimistic projections with a record-breaking 5,135 cyclists participating in BTWW, a 37% increase from 2003. Of these, 828 were new commuter cyclists, also up 37% over last year. Participation by gender was tracked for the first time, and showed that 39% of cyclists were women. Nationally, women account for about one in four cycle commuters. Cyclists in teams with the highest participation rates were traveling an average distance of 8.3 kilometres one way, with an average commute time of about 30 minutes. This would easily meet Health Canadas fitness prescription: an hour a day of cumulative exercise, at least three days a week.

Congratulations on another wonderful BTWW. I find it takes years to convert people to make lifestyle changes. The fact that you're there, you're not going to get off your bike wagon, and you keep reminding everyone every year is paying off! Keep it coming. Denise Sefton, Willows

I would like to comment on the excellent organizational work of your team at BTWW. I found the Team Captains' meetings and the informational material supplied through those meetings to be invaluable to our efforts here at Langford! Keep up the good work for BTWW 11. I have participated in BTWW for three years, and would like to congratulate you and your team on an outstanding job. The Celebration Stations this year really made a difference, as there was something to look forward to each day. I managed to visit three during my regular commute one day! The volunteers at each station were very encouraging, and obviously enjoyed what they were doing. We all had fun, and two of us met our goal of cycling the 45 km round trip for five consecutive days. Thanks for the opportunity to challenge ourselves, and for the wonderful job. Sincerely, Susan Frost

SERVING THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA COMMUNITY
Discover pedal power June 713
by Joy Poliquin
The cyclists are coming!
Thirty seven teams across campus - ranging from childcare services ("the Training Wheels") to the chemistry department ("Chain Reaction") to communications services ("the Spokespeople") have signed up so far to participate in Bike to Work Week, June 713. The university encourages as many people as possible to try cycling to campus during Bike to Work Week. As an incentive, a cycling prize will be awarded to every registered UVic participant. The real incentive, however, is fitness and clean air.
Avid commuter cyclist Mary Sanseverino (computer science) poses with the Victoria Bike to Work Week 2004 official poster featuring a photo of herself. Bike to Work Week takes place June 7 - 13.
"Bike to Work Week is about introducing staff and faculty to the benefits of commuter cycing - not winning the Tour de France," says UVic interim sustainability co-ordinator Sarah Webb. "Start out slow, drink lots of water and go at your own pace." She also suggests considering cycling as an alternative to working out at an indoor gym. "By cycling to work on a regular basis, we not only improve local air quality and reduce congestion on our roadways, but we get great exercise in time already committed to travel." For the fourth year in a row, UVic is a major sponsor of the event. The university has traditionally enjoyed high participation and has been recognized as a major presence during previous Bike to Work Work Weeks. This year there are some great prizes, including a new bike, a six-day kayaking tour, This year there are some great prizes, including a new bike, a six-day kayaking tour, Webb has kits available for team captains. If you want to join an existing team or start a new one, contact Webb at 472-5011 or sarahwebb@fmgt.uvic.ca. For more information, or to register online, visit www.biketoworkvictoria.ca. The registration deadline is June 4.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF MEDICAL HEALTH OFFICER
he twenty-first century promises to be fraught with slow motion epidemics of heart disease, diabetes and even joint disease arising from a sedentary lifestyle coupled with obesity.
While not as dramatic as acute infectious diseases, these modern plagues, evolving over time, will be just as deadly. Programs such as the one documented in this yearbook show that the cure lies as much within the community as it does within our health care institutions.
