| This video camera is a great camcorder, it is easy to use and pretty inexpensive. This camera does have its draw backs but not the camera itself. Recording Media - This is both Hard Drive (which they market as HD) and MicroSD. | |

| The HD drop detection is a great feature, helps keep the 30 gig HD in good working condition. One caveat of note for the JVC Everio(s) (and this may very well apply to other JVC models) the video files the camera produces are .mod files. | |

Each title is assigned a reference number enabling you to locate it easily. Chapter (DVD only) A chapter is a segment of a title such as a scene in a film or one interview in a series. Each chapter is assigned a chapter number, enabling you to locate the chapter you want. Depending on the disc, chapters may not be recorded. Track A distinct element of audio/visual information, such as the picture or sound track for a specific language (DVD), or a musical piece on a video or audio CD. Each track is assigned a track number, enabling you to locate the track you want. DVD discs allow one track of video (with multiple angles) and several tracks of audio. Auto Clock Set
PROGRAM
The Timer Recording function allows you to record up to 8 programs within a period of one year. (See pages 23-24).
TUNING
This DVD+VCR is equipped with a frequency synthesized tuner capable of receiving up to 181 channels. These include VHF channels 2-13, UHF channels 14-69 and CATV channels 1-125.
Auto Channel Programming
FUNCTION OSD The on-screen display can be turned on or off. AUDIO MODE The DVD+VCR has two separate audio playback systems, the high quality VHS Hi-Fi system and standard NORMAL mono system. The same audio is generally recorded on both systems. The VHS Hi-Fi system plays on separate (left and right) channels, and the NORMAL system plays monaural sound. The normal track is always played so the cassette can be played on a DVD+VCR that does not have VHS Hi-Fi. BROADCAST TYPE (STEREO / SAP / MONO) Multichannel Television Sound (MTS) carries stereo and/or Second Audio Program (SAP) bilingual signals. Set this display to the desired position when both MTS stereo and SAP signals are received. When only one of the MTS signal is received, the DVD+VCR automatically selects the corresponding receiving mode (Stereo or SAP) regardless of the selected position. For normal operation, the display should be in the STEREO position. The DVD+VCR will then record a STEREO program when available, and record a mono program IF the program is NOT IN STEREO. For weak STEREO and/or SAP broadcasts, changing the display to mono may give clearer sound. AUDIO OUTPUT (STEREO / LEFT / RIGHT) Used during playback [when AUDIO MODE (HI-FI/ NORMAL) is in HI-FI position] for selecting the audio output signals from the AUDIO OUT terminals (L ch and R ch), and RF.OUT. This display setting should normally be left in the stereo position, so that when a stereo tape is played, the stereo sound will be heard through the left and right channels. If a mono tape is played and the audio output is set to stereo, the same mono sound will be heard from both left and right channels. In addition to the above settings, these other sources are also affected: 1. Playback of CD, DVD or VCD 2. Output of built in tuner, Line 1 or Line 2
Dolby Digital / DTS / MPEG DVD
Bitstream: Select Bitstream if you connect the DVD+VCRs DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jack to an amplifier or other equipment with a Dolby Digital, DTS or MPEG decoder. PCM (for Dolby Digital / MPEG): Select when connected to a two-channel digital stereo amplifier. DVDs encoded in Dolby Digital or MPEG will be automatically downmixed to two-channel PCM audio. Off (for DTS): If you select Off, the DTS signal is not output through the DIGITAL AUDIO OUT jack.
Sample Freq. (Frequency) DVD
If your receiver or amplifier is NOT capable of handling 96 kHz signals, select 48 kHz. When this choice is made, this unit automatically converts any 96 kHz signals to 48 kHz so your system can decode them. If your receiver or amplifier is capable of handling 96 kHz signals, select 96 kHz. When this choice is made, this unit passes each type of signal through without any further processing. Check the documentation for your amplifier to verify its capabilities.

The other options are (LEFT) POSITION, which results in the left channel sound (L) being heard from both speakers or (RIGHT) POSITION, which results in the right channel sound (R) being heard from both speakers. 3. Insert a cassette and press PLAY (N). Note:
MTS (Multi-Channel TV Sound)
VHS Hi-Fi Stereo / MTS Br oadcast
This DVD+VCR is equipped with the VHS Hi-Fi audio sound system for recording and playback. The information below gives a brief description of Hi-Fi audio and how to record and play a tape in the Hi-Fi audio mode.
This DVD+VCR can decode MTS stereo and bilingual (SAP) off-the-air broadcast sound signals. It also decodes stereo TV sound from local cable companies as long as they operate on assigned cable frequencies and use the EIA-recommended MTS stereo/bilingual TV sound system. Multichannel TV Sound Indicator (MTS) When you press ENTER / OK one or both of the indicators appears on the TV Screen. STEREO The DVD+VCR can record in stereo onto the VHS Hi-Fi audio tracks when the BROADCAST TYPE option is in the STEREO position. The DVD+VCR can also record mono audio onto the mono audio track. SAP Some stations transmit a Second Audio Program, which is used for a second language or additional information. STEREO/SAP Use the BROADCAST TYPE option to select the desired recording mode (STEREO or SAP).
Hi-Fi Stereo Audio Sound
A stereo TV with AUDIO/VIDEO input jacks or a stereo audio system is required for true stereo playback. To experience the full and rich stereo sound available with Hi-Fi recorded tapes, we recommend the connection of this unit to a home stereo audio system. 1. If you dont see an on-screen display after several minutes, some of the files may be too large reduce the resolution of the JPEG files to less than 5760 (Horizontal) x 3840 (Vertical) pixels and burn another disc. The total number of contents on the disc should be less than 1500 files and 300 folders. Some discs may be incompatible due to a different recording format or the condition of disc. Ensure that all the selected files have the.jpg extensions when copying into the CD layout. If the files have.jpe or.jpeg extensions, please rename them as.jpg file. File names without.jpg extension will not be able to be read by this DVD+VCR. Even though the files are shown as JPEG image files in Windows Explorer.

Cable Box Control Setting
Suggested location
Place the cable box on top of the VCR. Attach the VCRs Controller to the top of the VCR with the Controllers transmitter pointed towards the cable boxs remote sensor.
The following procedure is required if you receive your TV channels through a cable box (descrambler). The Controller allows the VCR to automatically switch the cable box channel during timer recording. The Controller is effective for recording broadcasts that have been programmed using VCR Plus+ (Z pg. 30) or Express timer programing (Z pg. 34).
ONLY FOR HR-S3800U: The Controller is not supplied with this unit. It can be requested by mailing in the completed JVC Cable Mouse Certificate that is included with the accessory package.
Installing Controller
The Controller can also control a DBS receiver. If both a cable box and a DBS receiver are used, position the Controller so its signal reaches the remote sensors on both the cable box and DBS receiver.
Cable box
Situate Controller
Place the Controller so that its transmitter is facing the cable boxs remote sensor. c Make sure the path between the Controller and the cable boxs remote sensor is not blocked.

c If you want to find the very beginning of the desired program, press REW ( 1 ) or FF ( ) after playback starts.
An index code is not placed on the tape when recording is resumed from recording pause.
Other Useful functions for playback
You can also use the following functions for recording. c Video Calibration (Z pg. 39) When this function is set to ON, this VCR checks the condition of the tape in use during playback and recording, and compensates to provide the highestpossible pictures. c Picture Control (Z pg. 39) This function helps you to adjust the playback picture quality according to your preference. c Video Stabilizer (Z pg. 40) You can automatically correct vertical vibrations in the picture when playing back unstable recordings made on another VCR. c Blue Back (Z pg. 40) When this function is set to ON, the TV screen becomes all blue in the following cases: When receiving a channel not in use. When stopping playback.
Locating beginning of timer recordings Instant Review
At the press of a button, you can turn on the VCR, rewind the tape and begin to view the most recent timerrecorded program. Press REVIEW after ensuring that the VCR is in the timer recording standby mode. c The VCR turns on, and rewinds to the index code indicating the beginning of the last timer-recorded program, then begins playback automatically. c You can access a program of 2 to 9 index codes away from the current position on the tape. If, for example, you have 5 programs recorded and you want to watch the third one, press REVIEW three times. c If you want to find the very beginning of the desired program, press REW ( 1 ) or FF ( ) after playback starts. c If the tape is already rewound when REVIEW is pressed, it will play the tape from the beginning. It will not fast-forward to an index code. c The Instant Review function will also operate if the VCR is turned on.
m AUTO SP = EP TIMER
OTHER USEFUL FUNCTIONS (cont.)
* The default setting is bold in the table below. When this function is set to ON, the VCR automatically switches to EP mode to allow complete recording if there is not enough tape to record the entire program while timer-recording in SP mode. For Example. Recording a program of 140 minutes in length onto a 120-minute tape
Approximately 110 minutes SP mode Approximately 30 minutes EP mode
Make sure you set this function to ON before the timer-recording starts.
c If you have programed the VCR to timer-record 2 or more programs, the second program and those thereafter may not fit on the tape with this function set to "ON". In this case, do not use this function, but change the tape speed manually during timer programing. c In order to ensure that the recording fits on the tape, this function may leave a slight non-recorded portion at the end of the tape. c There may be some noise and sound disturbance where the tape speed switches from SP to EP mode on the tape. c This function is not available during ITR (Instant Timer Recording), and will not work properly on the following tapes: T(ST)-30, T(ST)-60, T(ST)-90, and T(ST)120.
m VIDEO STABILIZER
When this function is set to ON, you can automatically correct vertical vibrations in the picture when playing back unstable recordings made on another VCR.
c When you finish viewing a tape, be sure to set this function to OFF. c Regardless of the setting, this function has no effect during recording and during special effects playback. c The on-screen display may jitter vertically when this function is set to ON. c To watch recordings with close-caption, set this function to OFF.
m BLUE BACK
When this function is set to ON, the TV screen becomes all blue in the following cases: c When receiving a channel not in use. c When stopping playback.
When you want to receive an unstable channel with poor signals, set this function to OFF.
m 2ND AUDIO RECORD
When this function is set to ON; c If a SAP program is received, the SAP audio is recorded on both the normal and Hi-Fi tracks. The main audio is not recorded. c If a non-SAP program is received, the main audio is recorded on both the Hi-Fi and normal tracks. When this function is set to OFF, the SAP audio cannot be recorded.
m AUDIO MONITOR
HI-FI: Normally select this. Hi-Fi sound is played back. HI-FI L: Sound on the left Hi-Fi channel is played back. HI-FI R: Sound on the right Hi-Fi channel is played back. NORM: Sound on the normal track is played back. MIX: Both sounds on the Hi-Fi track and normal track are mixed and played back.
This VCR can record two sound tracks simultaneously (normal and HiFi) on a Hi-Fi stereo tape. You can select the sound track(s) to listen to while playing back a Hi-Fi stereo tape. In addition, when playing back a prerecorded tape containing two separate audio programs on the Hi-Fi tracks, you can choose either one by selecting either HI-FI L or HI-FI R.
c While playing back a monaural tape, sounds on the normal track will be heard regardless of this setting. c If RF connection (Z pg. 7) is used for viewing pictures on the TV, sound will be monaural even though you select HI-FI. c You can also use the A. MONITOR button on the Remote to select the desired monitor sound. (Z pg. 23)
m S-VHS MODE
You can determine which recording mode either S-VHS mode or VHS mode is used for recording on S-VHS tapes. When this function is set to ON, you can record on S-VHS tapes with S-VHS picture quality. When this function is set to OFF, you can record on S-VHS tapes with VHS picture quality.
S-VHS mode allows you to make high quality video recordings with horizontal resolution of 400 lines, comparing with the 230 lines of resolution of conventional VHS recordings. To achieve the highest quality picture we recommended to record in S-VHS mode. (But remember that a conventional VHS VCR without SQPB cannot play back S-VHS tapes recorded in S-VHS mode.) S-VHS MODE setting does not affect recording on VHS tapes. Recording on VHS tapes is always performed in VHS mode except when using S-VHS ET mode (Z pg. 27).
m AV COMPU-LINK
The REMOTE PAUSE/AV COMPULINK terminal on the rear panel can be used as either the REMOTE PAUSE terminal or the AV COMPULINK terminal. When this function is set to ON, you can use the this terminal as the AV COMPULINK terminal. By connecting other JVCs AV COMPULINK components (see the diagram below), including amplifiers (or receivers) and televisions, one touch control of the audio and video components linked via their AV COMPULINK connectors becomes possible.
For example: simply load a cassette in the VCR and press PLAY ( 3 ) and the AV COMPULINK components automatically turn on, the TVs AV mode is selected and the VCR starts playback. (You do not have to press PLAY ( 3 ) if the cassettes record safety tab is removed.)
When this function is set to OFF, you can use this terminal as the REMOTE PAUSE terminal. (Z pg. 45)
Connection varies depending on the type of JVC TV you have. Refer to the TVs instruction manual when making this connection.

Various connection for editing tapes
The following three methods can be used for editing tapes. c VHS to S-VHS editing (VIDEO-VIDEO connection): Although the picture quality is inherently limited by the original VHS quality, the edited tape has better picture quality than those made by VHS-to-VHS editing. c S-VHS to VHS editing (VIDEO-VIDEO connection): Since the original source is recorded in S-VHS mode, the edited tape has better picture quality than those made by VHS-to-VHS editing. c S-VHS to S-VHS (S-VIDEO connection): Original picture quality of S-VHS made can be duplicated with minimal picture degradation. This is the best editing method you can use on S-VHS VCRs.
